This is from the Arsenio Hall show and I'm pretty sure they were told not to stand up during the performance. They are just a bunch of tourists who wanted to see a TV show being taped. Half the audience probably doesn't know who these guys are. I see a lot of grey hair in that group..
Thought so! I worked in TV at the time (Toronto) and we aired Arsenio. I must've been on a different shift. I did see it on Muchmusic (our MTV) frequently. Yeah, deadass touristas for sure.
Great great group lyrics with meaning great vocals drum work awesome bass is smooth and that guitar that guitar exceptional fantastic one of the best guitarists i have ever heard
These guys are all amazingly underrated. Each member should be listed somewhere in the best guitarist, singer, bassist and drummer categories. And I will add that they sound so great Live! Thank you for reacting to this! 🤘🏻
for decades TV audiences are suppose to stay sitting as to not overshadow any acts. Believe me, I saw this band live twice and it was definitely the opposite of this TV studio audience. This song got a LOT of play on rock radio and especially MTV, it was their debut hit.
I feel lucky that you guys appreciate such a wide variety of music. It was hard in the 70s and 80s to absorb it all, relying on top 40 DJs was so limiting. I'm hitting all the music you react to, streaming, because of your reminding me. I couldn't afford to buy all the albums I loved, back then Great affection for you both.
*Chod and Dee* Afternoon U2.... This was a HUGE banger when it came out.! I heard it first on KLOS in L.A. then saw the video on MTV, when MTV actually was a "Music Video Channel" , lol.... When I saw it was an all black band Rockin like all hell, I just smiled.! Not unheard of but very rare.! NICE CHOICE.! *David* .....
Big late 80's sound and appearance!! I was ecstatic when radio started playing this after suffering through so much British synth-pop for the prior six or seven years!!
Dee gotta ck Funkadelic (Eddie Hazel), Bad Brians, 24/7 Spyz (Jimi Hazel), Fishbone, Urban Dance Squad. and of course the Hackney Brothers band DEATH!! NUFF
I heard this song a lot on the radio and also the video on MTV. I beleive they also won music awards. So, I don't think they had very little air play. What happened to a lot of rock bands in the 90s was music from Seattle. Grunge music. It took the radio airwaves and MTV by storm. You can Google and find articles about how Grunge music killed rock music/hair metal/rock-n-roll. Here is a quote that I think a lot of rockers felt: "As I once said on MTV, Nirvana killed our career, Loverboy front man Mike Reno tells Rolling Stone. "You just looked at the charts, and it was all negative lyrics and people dressed up like they're lumberjacks. The Seattle grunge thing just took over everything. "
Ahh yes. The one song everyone reacts to from these guys. It's not even their best song, by a long shot, but it's their most well-known. "Type" is a different vibe, and "Open Letter to a Landlord" really lets you know what kind of pipes Corey Glover has. For Dee's sake you should react to either "Sunless Saturday", "Everyday Sunshine," or "Fight The Youth" by Fishbone.
Grammy winning, multi platinum selling band. They opened for the Rolling Stones on their first tour. All over the radio and MTV. What happened is music became corporatized and slowly bands like this were relegated to the margins. 25 years ago the music landscape was way different than it is today. No bands had their music in commercials selling products. They would have died before succumbing to the powers that be. That was "selling out". Nowadays artists kill to get the blessing of the corporate world because there's almost no other way to get "big". For their time, LC were big. Gansta Rap was just around the corner and grunge, and that was the 1, 2 punch that caused the big shift.
Great band. I always like these guys. And man, the clothing rocks. Not gonna lie, I still wear a lot of neon vintage clothing from that time period. Wear what's comfortable, right.🤷♂️😂
Wow, what a performance. I believe I read somewhere that Mick and/or Keith loved these guys and want them to tour with the Stones, which I believe they did in 1989/90 They also won 2 Grammys. Not my era really, but even I heard of them!
Your music mirrors your mind Another great Black band of the time is The Bus Boys namely the song Boys are Back in Town (Original) You're gonna love it!
It's not that these guys where underrated at the time - they were loved and respected in equal measure - it is that they they have largely been forgotten...
This was from an appearance on Arsenio. That's why they were sitting down. When at a TV taping back then you don't just get out your seat and go down front unless told to do so.
Heyo my friend(s): Moody Blues - The Beginning/Lovely To See You. You’ll wanna hear this, you and Dee. Take care, I always enjoy your reactions! - Evan in the Cdn Rockies
I've loved this song since it was first released due to the cool hard rocking guitar/bass riff, the touch of R&B he adds to the vocals and the lyrics, but I can't say I've ever loved the guitar solo because it sounds like random frenzied madness, IMO. He definitely has some chops and playing fast has it's place, but not throughout the whole solo just because you can.
Vernon Reid? He definitely is accomplished! This was on Arsenio 30-40 years ago.... I mentioned The Clash the other day to some kid and he told me he doesn't listen to the Oldies channel.............
I LITERALLY JUST LOOKED UP REACTIONS OF THIS YESTERDAY YOURE QUICK MAN BUT YES LIVING COLOUR IS SO AHEAD OF THEIR TIME!!!!! Please Listen to Bi! Such a heavy song and so ahead of it’s time as well.
As I thought, the Arsenio Hall Show (thanks, Melo D), so a houseful of deadass touristas rather than fans. Great song, kickin' band. Try 'Open Letter to a Landlord', 'Glamour Boys' and 'Middle Man' next.
I became familiar with Vernon Reid's talent through Ronald Shannon Jackson's Smash and Scatteration album released in 1984. Saw this tour after the release of this album...GREAT show. Reid started the Black Rock Coalition in the 80's. The singer Corey Glover released a solo album after the break-up...you can here his talent. You both should check out David Ryan Harris' band Follow for Now, expose her to some early Funkadelic, Mother's Finest and Sly and the Family Stone. R&B radio would not touch the band. That performance was on the Arsenio Hall show...his audience did not know how to take their music. Rock radio stations wore that song out. Around the same time the band Mother's Finest released an album titled "Black Radio Won't Play This Record." That is all because the music does not fit their format. Who knows, the radio stations have the chance to play anything, who knows what type of music their audience would like?
its the Arsenio Hall tv show. they do not allow them to stand. even if they did most of them probably wouldnt. tv show crowds have no idea usually of what they are even there to see. its not like it was a room full of fans.
The Vivid album was incredible!! So many great songs on it. The problem was the follow-up album was not as good and honestly you never did hear them again on the radio. At least not here in the NY area. Great musicians in this band! I disagree with you Chod. They got plenty of exposure...especially on MTV and the show Headbangers Ball in particular. They were NOT overlooked. In my opinion, they were a one album hit wonder (I could be wrong, but I doubt it).
Don't knock the crowd too much. This was a talk show appearance, not a concert. So, it's a mix of largely tourists, not necessarily fans. This is just who was appearing that day. I saw these guys open for The Stones in 89. HELL of an opening act.
they weren't dead if you want to see dead show dee the grand funk railroad inside looking out video only thing I can figure out is they had to be to stoned to move 😂😂😆 😆.
I wish there was not so much volume disparity between His volume, Her volume, and the volume of the Video... gotta be Johnny on the spot with the volume control.
Saw these guys live a few weeks ago! They're still killing it!
What, Really??? COOL!!! I'm a 60 yo SWM and have Loved them for Years!
I did see them too, few years ago .
These guys were life-changing for me when this album came out.
Awesome song, I remember blasting this when it came on the radio!
You should also try "open letter to a landlord". The studio version so you get those weird harmonics at the start of the solo.
Yes! So many channels do this song, but not Open Letter, and it's a real shame.
The Album Vivid still rocks 34 years later. Can't wait for a new Living Colour album!!!
Both the rock station and the top 40 station in Tampa played this song a lot.
I saw them in concert last fall. ROCKED THE HOUSE . Same energy-now his hair is orange not his clothes.
One of the best rock songs ever.I loved it back in the day I love it to this day!The lead 🎸 is 🔥!!!
Great great group lyrics with meaning great vocals drum work awesome bass is smooth and that guitar that guitar exceptional fantastic one of the best guitarists i have ever heard
They did have radio airplay. It's just that the attention was all about this song exclusively, and they did so much more.
Oh yes indeed 1988 I was all about this!!! I was Dancing all the time when this music video on MTV back in the day y’all 🔥🔥🔥🔥
They're like water, they won't fit In a box. Rock, R&B, metal.... Even "Hair Metal" they did it all🤘🤘
I remember hearing this song on the radio and MTV back in the 90's but they just disappeared...shame too, they're flipping awesome...
These guys were first hard rock band!!! Great song, and socially still true!!!
Saw these guys live many, many years ago at a festival in Den Haag. Great live band. Attended a drum clinic that Will Calhoun gave, once, too.
They were popular in their day. Their music was played and loved. Wish they were still making music.
They're still performing... My brother saw them a couple of weeks ago and said they were great.
I remember buying the album Vivid by Living Colour , late 80s. Its never been far from my turntable ever since.
This and another song were all over the radio I listened to back in the day...
These guys are all amazingly underrated. Each member should be listed somewhere in the best guitarist, singer, bassist and drummer categories. And I will add that they sound so great Live! Thank you for reacting to this! 🤘🏻
One of my favorite songs. It stays on our playlist.
Vernon Reid 🙇. Incredible live performance by the band.
Shreddin' that geetar...
I was just thinking Vernon is so underrated
Saw them live 3 times in the Uk in the 90s, great band, kinda funky heavy rock, pretty cool.
In its MUSIC heyday in the 80's/early 90's, MTV used this in their promos all the time.
I was lucky enough to see them in 1986:}}What a great band!!!!!!
They definitely got a ton of air play on my Stereo from our rock station, they rock!!!!
for decades TV audiences are suppose to stay sitting as to not overshadow any acts. Believe me, I saw this band live twice and it was definitely the opposite of this TV studio audience.
This song got a LOT of play on rock radio and especially MTV, it was their debut hit.
Excelente banda !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! y excelente tema !!!!
I saw this band performing at a Rolling Stones concert and they wowed the crowd.
Yea I saw the open for the Stones twice on the Steel Wheels Tour in 89 and they were solid

Band called Death
3 Black Brothers from Detroit
Politician in my eyes…one of there songs… on eBay sold for $800
Such a kick a$$ song.

listen to "Solace of You", by Living Colour... such a beautiful song!
Great song choice. They opened for the Stones in the 90’s.
He's telling the truth in this awesome song
Living colour rocks live.
This was a big album back in 89 Corey the lead singer has a roll in the movie "Platoon"
Awesome Rock band fire 🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸🎸👌😎
She is so Cute.
first saw them supporting Anthrax back in the day(in the UK,Newcastle city hall)...been a fan ever since.

"Love Rears Its Ugly Head" Live on Arsenio has some crazy vocals.
I call these riffs the inside-out guitar. A term I have only previously used for Robert Fripp.
i know in older tv music act performances the audiences were asked not to move or stand up so i am not sure if this still the case in the 80s.
This was from an appearance on Arsenio. That's why they were sitting down. When at a TV taping back then you don't just get out your seat and go down front unless told to do so.
It was played just as much as any other band here. Everybody knew who they were, we all had their CD, they were played here.
This was from TV. That's why everyone is holding back.
Great song, haven’t heard this in a long time
Heyo my friend(s): Moody Blues - The Beginning/Lovely To See You. You’ll wanna hear this, you and Dee. Take care, I always enjoy your reactions! - Evan in the Cdn Rockies
💗Dee "I didn't know we were performing in a cemetery" 💀 😂🤣
Corey Glover (the lead singer) also co-starred in the movie Platoon.
I've loved this song since it was first released due to the cool hard rocking guitar/bass riff, the touch of R&B he adds to the vocals and the lyrics, but I can't say I've ever loved the guitar solo because it sounds like random frenzied madness, IMO. Lead singer Corey Glover has acted as well.He had a good role in Oliver Stone's "PLATOON".
I’ve never seen that version. Amazing.
This performance was on the Arsenio Hall Show.
Looks to be a TV performance ( maybe the Tonight Show? ). That's why the audience is just sitting.
This song has more reference for today than then.
I'VE NEVER HEARD THEM LIVE. SOUNDS GREAT!
Vernon Reid? He definitely is accomplished! This was on Arsenio 30-40 years ago....
I mentioned The Clash the other day to some kid and he told me he doesn't listen to the Oldies channel.............
For an energetic performance check out a band called Vintage Trouble when they went on Letterman! Epic!
ENTERTAINERS!!!
I LITERALLY JUST LOOKED UP REACTIONS OF THIS YESTERDAY YOURE QUICK MAN BUT YES LIVING COLOUR IS SO AHEAD OF THEIR TIME!!!!! Please Listen to Bi! Such a heavy song and so ahead of it’s time as well.
I love starting my days with y'all. I'm jammin. I'm smilin. Dee, you're looking beautiful as always. Such a hype reaction. 💙 from Texas.
Saw them open for The Rolling Stones !!!!
The singer Corey was in Platoon.
It was on Saturday Night Live on tv.
I recommend Body Count “Manslaughter” and “I Will Always Love You”. Music with a cool meaning.
It does seem like a cemetery, doesn't it? LOL!
Fyi...the crowd wasn't standing because this was a late night talk show...(The Arseneo zhall Show)
oooh, you were **thisclose** to that shift key 🤣
@@baronvonsatan ..I call it fat finger syndrome 😂...plus my screen is shattered and didn't see it to correct 😭😬
For energy try Vintage Trouble "Blues Hand Me Down" live on Letterman...blew Dave away!!!
As I thought, the Arsenio Hall Show (thanks, Melo D), so a houseful of deadass touristas rather than fans. Great song, kickin' band. Try 'Open Letter to a Landlord', 'Glamour Boys' and 'Middle Man' next.

They can't stand up because it's in a TV studio. It's pretty standard studio protocol.
This song was on MTV constantly, not sure about the radio..
That's on the Arsenio Hall Show.
I think the audience was sitting because it was on the Arsenio Hall show. TV audiences don't mosh unfortunately
Time's Up by Living Colour is overshadowed but a good listen.
The outfits!! Gorgeous men in spandex?? YES, PLEASE! ❤😍
They have video, too
If there was a rule that you couldn't stand up, I would've been escorted out.
They would keep the audience quiet so it wouldn't mess with the audio mix.
This. A. Big. Break the. Wall. Downs. Song
This song got a ridiculous amount of airplay.
The Vivid album was incredible!! So many great songs on it. The problem was the follow-up album was not as good and honestly you never did hear them again on the radio.
