A Day of Plastering with a TWIST - Portugal Property Renovation

- It’s time for yet more hemp lime plastering. My sister is visiting and wanted to lend a hand so we thought we’d show her how we do our base coat plaster - from mixing to applying to the rough stone walls by hand.
For the base coat we use:
2 buckets of hydrated lime
2 buckets of hemp
1.5 buckets of water
Mix to a consistency of tuna mayo
Leave for 15mins
Mix and adjust consistently with water until you have a mix that sticks together when worked in your hands
Apply by hand onto rough walls
Optionally apply with a trowel but you’ll need a significantly wetter mix.

So a few more trainee base plastering lessons. Then you have a potential team of traind volunteers for upstairs and future projects. Great teamwork you three. Personally, I know it's more time consuming, but I like the tuck pointing. Alot more stone character and definition shows through. Plastered walls have more layers (3), insulation (thicker), handle more moisture, easier to maintain.

That wall is a joy . I do wonder why your hesitancy when the stone wall comes up .I love stone walls as long as they don’t hinder things like installing insulation or cables and so on I suppose ,but visually the stones are quite beautiful .Also they certainly show the ingenuity of the builder when only having them available for building.That being said ,we all have our likes and dislikes,different opinions and so on ,and your choices certainly are bringing about a beautiful and sound dwelling.

Yes, you both have the same sense of humour... blend in Kylie and it's a perfect mix. I remember when the channel first started and some of the looks exchanged when certain phrases or words were mentioned. Obviously Guy is the influencing factor!! If you want a bit of bling put a nice thin ornate or plain plaster edging you can make yourslves, you buy the moulds. I think it would look pretty good choosing maybe cherry blossom or birds on a branch.

Wow, so many comments and the video has only been released a short time! Video with chatter was preferred here but I do enjoy some silent speedy footage too. The transformation of the room is remarkable especially the lighting in the room with smooth white walls verses a dark lumpy rock wall. Loved the funny ending even the chicken round up good thing you don't have a dozen! Little sisters are the best! I know cuz I am one 😊
Regarding your spraying water on the wall? It's about the effect of ambient temperature/thermal mass, your materials, evaporation/absorption, reduction in the fluid content of the mortar/batter/hempcrete etc. Here in Australia, when doing plaster/render, laying some forms of paving/bricklaying etc. during summer, we'll often use a huge utility sponge & bucket of water to pre-wet warm surfaces & materials. We also sometimes dunk bricks or pavers briefly in a bucket of water before pressing them into the mortar bed. Water cools them down, stopping the previously overheated surfaces from 'fast-cooking' the mortar etc with its retained heat from the sun. It's more structurally sound & safe for render, mortar, hempcrete etc to set & cures slowly, so we take precautions to slow down the drying of concrete pours too, during summer.

I've recommended to the PIPs channel that they check out your channel. They are renovating their tiny house in Central Portugal, Coimbra district. It has damp problems and I feel they can learn a lot about how to correct the water seeping into their walls rather than just repairing it with same materials and methods than caused the problem to begin with. You are making progress in leaps and bounds now that the ground works are done.
