I love the studio version, Art was about 27 years old. But this live in 1981, I love because Art was 2 months from turning 40 & his voice had nicely matured.
Art suffered from vocal cord paralysis for a period of time. He had to stop singing, stopped smoking, etc and eventually his voice came back. I saw Simon and Garfunkel in DC AFTER the return of his voice. They got to this song......and the entire audience held their breath to see it he was going to or even could THAT NOTE. You nailed it. I'm so lucky I was young in the sixties, we had the best music. Simon and Garfunkel, The Doors, The Band (2 of my favorites) Creedence Clear Water, Jefferson Airplane, and many more.
This was years after they broke up. Nobody thought they'd ever get back together, and they did a free concert out of nowhere. Paul Simon's songwriting is legendary. In terms of pure album sales and top-10 hits, he probably had a bigger solo career than he did with Art Garfunkel. And Art's voice - well... Something I really love about this song is that it transcends genre. It's not rock or country or folk or pop, it's not blues or jazz or gospel, it's not metal or techno or hiphop. It's just a song.
Paul Simon is an American treasure. One of the greatest songwriters this country has ever produced. Lucky for you, there is a HUGE catalog, and I have a feeling you’re going to like it.
One of the greatest tenors the planet has ever known. Saw him here in Rancho Cucamonga California across the street from where I then lived at the Lewis Playhouse with 400 other people and when he sang this song the entire theatre was in tears. Simply incredible.
Art can belt out a very powerful, soaring and expressive vocal, as well as, sing in a most heavenly sounding soft, airy, angelic voice. Art's voice IS his instrument. Paul sings with a very soft, yet grounding, rhythmic type of vocal. When they sing together, their voices create an absolutely magical quality.
This song had just been released when my sister & I were waiting in a long line at a store in St. Louis. A little boy & his mom were in front of us and he started to sing this song to make the waiting go by faster. He was probably about six years old, but he knew every word. It was beautiful! A little bit of heaven for all of us.
This song is like 50 years old brings a tear to my eyes every time I hear it and I’m 63 ..So many Great bands back then dive in Like c.c.r moody blues Jannis Chaplin wow just so many
Artie has the voice of an angel. When I first heard Art perform this song, I fell in love with his voice and his music. He's a professional. No auto tune. I don't need to hear anyone else's version. Art has many albums he did solo. Some of his solo hits are "All I Know", "Scissors Cut"; anything on his Breakaway album is gold. "El Condor Pasa" & "Scarborough Fair" are gr8 S&G hits. You are now going down the S&G rabbit hole, brutha.
I saw them live and it was a big arena. Art's voice sailed over the audience and I swear he could have done it without a microphone. He has such a clear, high voice and Paul does a great understated harmony. Their voices were so perfect together and Paul is one of the great song writers of his generation. I think you are watching the Central Park concert which is wide open with no acoustic backing at all. And I believe it rained during the concert at some point (I could be wrong there).
Art is in his 80's and still sings and tours. He has 4 dates on his website for April and May. Also, his pianist of many decades passed away in August and I think he was the person on this video Warren Bernhardt.
This performance is probably one of the greatest I've ever seen, and you are spot on, this pisses all over the studio version. Paul Simon who wrote the song leaves the stage to Art Garfunkel and Art totally knocks it out of the park. It's a brilliant song, from a brilliant songwriter and any good singer would make it sound brilliant, but Art elevates it to a totally different level. You've got to remember, these were a couple of boyhood friends. What are the chances that one kid is one of the greatest songwriters of all time and his buddy has the voice of an angel?
Art Garfunkel is golden. It's rare for a pure, strong, haunting talent to come along. I can name only five in the second half of the 20th century...Art is one.
MMBxMOB, their Central Park Concert was in 1981/82, a good 12 years after the studio recording and long after the duo broke up. Such stupendous music from 2 amazing artists--well, their music never dies. I am so pleased that you are deeply fond of music from *my* era. Keep the newer generations in touch with what we call 'real music'! Always loving your reactions, Yvonne 🙂
As for your reaction, BRAVO! AMEN! You took all the words directly out of my mouth. I have told myself everything you said in this reaction. You can read my mind. Thank you, Paul, for writing one of the Top 5 songs I have EVER HEARD. Artie, thank you for, IMO, one of the Top 3 live performances I have EVER HEARD. Yes, this was a free 1981 Concert in NYC Central Park attended by S&G's hometown fans. But, I also BELIEVE it was the kickoff to their Reunion Concert that year. They took this concert on tour around America in 1981. It is one of the best concert I have had the honor of attending. Dressed in his iconic white collared shirt & black vest, I proudly admit, I witnessed Art Garfunkel sing Bridge Over Troubled Waters, EXACTLY like this video performance. You could hear a pin drop in the stadium while Garfunkel was singing Bridge. Artie got a 5 minute standing ovation for his pitch-perfect performance that night. My eyes watering & wondering if what I just witnessed was just a dream or if it was real. 👏👏👏
Watch his mouth closely. I don’t know why it’s easier to see with him because all great singers do it, must be the angle, but you can see exactly how he manipulates the shape of his mouth to change the tone and create all that impeccable beauty.
You really need to hear The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody and You've Lost that Lovin Feeling. You seem to enjoy great vocals and they had it in spades.
Art has a very unique vocal range: Tenor altino. Only a few, other than some opera singers, have it: Steve Perry, Neil Sedaka and Smokey Robinson. Truly amazing!

It’s such a beautiful song in the gospel style. Aretha loved it so much she had a hit with it too. Artie Garfunkel had the voice of an Angel. Still does.
Back in 1969, when this song was recorded in the studio, they didn't have nearly the ability to alter a vocalist's sound that they do now. No auto tune, no protools, gating and compression didn't exist yet. You have to remember, they were recording on analog tape, not digitally. Sure, they could optimize some things in the studio, the acoustics of the room, for instance, but the singers had to bring the goods. Roy Halee, who engineered and co-produced much of Simon & Garfunkel's catalogue has talked about one studio trick he used with them. He would first record them singing a track together. Then he would record each of them individually, to add richness to the tone. But think about the demands that placed on the singers. When they re-recorded their vocal part, they had to sing it exactly like the original duet recording, so it could be added seamlessly to the final mix.
You're reaction is exactly what I feel when I hear this song......Art Garfunkle is one of the best vocalists of the era......they had very few albums but each one was a gem.......love them.....
