Telling your sons falsely that their father had died took a particular form of callousness.
not if you're a compulsive liar
I grew up when parents didnt tell their children anything.
@@sr2291 I’m glad that’s starting to change.
@@sr2291 While I was a child, some of our relatives were killed by dinosaurs
@@anonymousstrangeness7348 Yeah. Me too. Lol
John unfortunately lived in the only town in the UK where neighbors actually cared what the hell anyone else was doing. Poor bloke.
Too accurate.

There's a difference between caring and being nosy neighbours!

As with the Papini case, I just don’t understand how you do this to your kids! There’s no healing from this kind of betrayal.
Well, their father is already dead to them. No loss.
@@TheDramacist True, but why did they forgive the mother? After all, she was the one who told them the lie and kept it up for all that time.
@@davel7014 Great observation Dave! 👍 I find it's often hard for people to write off a parent completely, for most people anyway- if you are present and there for your kids on a regular basis I guess maybe there's a LOT some can forgive? I'm sure it was hard for them. I saw Chad Daybell's kids on Dateline, not sure if you're familiar with that case but I'm SURE you've heard of it- all FIVE are CONVINCED their Father is innocent, and this is after PROOF he killed his wife (their Mother) AND after they found the bodies of his new wife's (Lori Vallow Daybell) children buried in HIS yard/property. They say he was framed, they KNOW their Dad, etc. Denial and that parent/child bond can be VERY strong at times I guess- but I'm with you, I don't understand it, in either case!!
@@shayb413
It is bewildering as you say, that child/parent bond where there's an actual blindness to how the person in the wrong operates.
I think of Prince Andrew's daughter telling him to go TV and be interviewed about Epstein.
In her mind how could anyone not believe her dad ?
It's a very hard thing to grow up and see what others see about the father you worship.
I remember when it came out that my own father was having an affair and had set up finances in motion to leave and take everything with him.
My mother and brother were completely pole axed while I couldn't understand how they didn't see he was capable of such things.
@@flowerjpotter1629 That is so terrible and tragic about your own Father, I'm so sorry!! I think it's interesting as we become adults and see our parents more as people with flaws instead of just the parents we put on a pedestal. I will say that my parents were both very loving and there for me, so had I found out one of them did something terrible, I think I could see logic and reason and believe it, and it may take time, but I believe personally I could disagree with or be appalled by their actions, and still come to forgive them and love them unconditionally, as I would want my children to do for me. But if we all just know right from wrong and try all we can to choose right as much as possible, huge giant betrayals like in these cases or even much more common like what your Father put your family through could be MUCH less common, if people could just be a little less selfish and think how their actions will affect their families and others! Thanks for sharing, hope you have a fantastic Friday friend!! ❤️
This is one of the worst attempts to hide one’s identity I’ve ever heard. It’s ridiculous. I can’t believe John or his first wife thought taking photos and staying in the same house was a great idea after faking his death.
Great work Doc, as always.
Right? The fake limp does my head in. "Oh, that guy kind of looks like John Darwin with a beard. But John didn't have a limp and this guy does, so it couldn't be John. "
"This makes me wonder what kind of math he was teaching." OMG Dr Grande you crack me up. I nearly spat out my drink. 😅 And John looked "non-dead". I don't know how you keep a straight face with some of these ridiculous stories. This one is a corker!
Afternoon Dr. G., Yes, “I suppose being dead could be pretty stressful.” Thank you for the ability to inform and entertain with wit. Appreciate it!
I laughed at that too 🤣
Funny how more often than not child sex offenders get lighter sentences than minor financial fraudsters.. 🤷♂️

i've been dead for the last six minutes, and i don't have a care in the world...
@@asshoIe94 That is a very entertaining screen name....
That gave me a chuckle as well!! 😂
This happened not far from me in the North East of England. Funniest prank: they lived in 'Seaton Carew', so someone crossed out 'Carew' on a road sign & wrote 'Canoe' instead! The town was known as 'Seaton Canoe' for ages.
That is gold.
Hilarious 😂
That's hilarious.
Hearing Dr Grande say “side hustle” made my day.
You deliver some of the sharpest sarcasm with the straightest face. I love that!
So much weird behavior in the world...you will NEVER run out of show ideas!

He just did a video on Meagan Markle. Seems like he ran out of ideas.

Dr grande is a low key troll with the dry humor comments about the Russians being safe from John. Lmao
He faked his own death and was still living in his house! I'm sure it happens but it seems so counterintuitive
Next door. He lived next door...technically
I thought that also. What a clown. At least go to a foreign country and stay there!
They are putting a drama on the tv here in England this month about this. I can't wait to see it. I remember this case well.
Ooh interesting, I hadn't heard that re the TV drama, thanks
I thought this is why he's covering it. DrG is up on the latest entertainment
That will make John even more narcissistic and grandiose.

@@sunnyday7843 The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe
I’m from the UK and everyone was talking about this case. I was at school at the time and everyone’s parents were saying what an idiot he didn’t even get that much money for it.
I remember this aswell
I remember it well
Im in UK 🇬🇧 xxx
Yeah me too. We nick named him Reginald Perrin 😄
Reginald Perrin 🤣😂. This is one of them stories that you don’t forget, one of them stories when you just think WTF?? I was young when this happened even back then I thought what an idiot. But now that I’m older and have kids myself it beggars belief. If he was going to get a million or something and told his family what’s happening then I could understand that. But letting your own kids believe that you are dead is just sickening and all this for a 100 grand. It’s not even worth it, with 100 grand what can you do? Pay off your mortgage and buy a nice car and maybe a nice holiday of your lucky and that’s it.
I live around the corner from them.. I see him in the town centre
It was probably a good idea that John didn’t try another disappearing act in The Philippines. Their court system would be way harsher on him.
Yes I’m Filipino and it’s rough out there! Drugs can give you a death sentence
@@1rage17 - Yes, thanks to Duterte. He’s a scary man.
I remember this case so well. It boggles the mind how people like this think they will get away with it.
they did for years fooled thier own 2 sons too
He did more 'dead' then some people do when they're alive lol 🤦🏽♀️
They were both responsible for this scheme. I find it difficult to believe that their sons could ever have a relationship with either of their parents.
I’m confused as to why Ann was given 3xtra months more than John in sentencing. He was the actual perpetrator; she just went along. 🤨
She kept him hidden in the attic
@@mandychadwick6823 and..she was a beneficiary collecting the proceeds.
She was an active co conspirator; her role in perpetrating the deception and obtaining the fraudulent benefits was essential to the success of the criminal venture. He couldn't have done this alone. The dead can't apply for their life insurance payout.
She filed a false insurance claim, not John. It would be a bit awkward for John to file a claim when he is supposed to be dead.
The money went to her. She actively participated.
I recall reading research once on why people choose to voluntarily join cults and disengage from generalized society. Some cult members studied reported feeling disillusioned in regards to burdens and responsibilities life placed on them. They wanted to return to a simpler time where they could be in a more protected child like state. Unfortunately if one chooses to take the passenger seat in life the driver may not always take you to the promise land. John Darwin reminds me of this type of discontentment. Nice one Dr G 🌵thought provoking as always. Have a good one.🌻
Sometimes you just want to kick back with like minded people 🤷
@@TheDramacist Humans are weird. We're the only animals that make life way harder while trying to make it easier lol
I'd like to hear a story of a fun, nice cult for once.
There used to bea show in the UK called Reginald Perrin where he failed his own death by running into the sea, lots of people drew comparisons when this came out. 😄
I didn't get where I am today

Dear Dr. Grande, can you make a video about the question and analyze what makes soldiers commit war crimes, such as rape and killing non armed civilians? The whole world is asking this question.
Of course, the only correct response to "I thought you were dead!" is "Yeah, I got better."
"I thought I was dead, but got a second opinion"

This needs to be a Netflix tv series for sure. So many aspects that could be amped up to make it even more interesting.
Netflix is garbage unfortunately.

Totally agree! The great comments often include great wording!📜
Dr. Grande *almost* cracked a smile at the part where the current wife clarified that the life insurance would be good for her. Wonder what happened to the Kansas farm?

As if John not starting a canoe business was what was so offensive about all this that he felt the need to correct the reporters 🙄
Maybe they broke their silence in the hopes saving their reputation:
It was a actually a Kayak business and not a Canoeing business that they intended to start.

@@TDubya811 I think it's wrong morally to lie to your children that their father died and watch them grieve and go through life that way. Was wondering when you would cover this one. Thank you, from England.
As if his story isn't weird enough. . To think that the guy moves to the Philippines only to marry a much younger woman. Usually the Filipinas will marry a Western guy to get out of their country. Those poor women are so desperate, that one of them would marry a broken down ex-con with whatever meager assets he had. Truth is stranger than fiction.
Thanks, Dr Grande, I've never heard of this case before. John really got around for a dead guy.

I believe Mr. Ballen did a episode on him and I believe it was still thought he had amnesia at that time. I'm shocked it was all a hoax.

Thank you for covering this case, I remember it coming to light in the UK. It was stunning how much the couple lied, and they way they adapted the house to hide him. Plus lying to their sons for all that time.
random request: can you analyze Johnny Carson? to me, it's so interesting that a person can have one personality on the air and another completely different personality off. like, he was welcoming and effusive and charismatic on air, perhaps better at performing than anyone else who's ever tried, but apparently he was cold and quiet and almost cruelly shy off.
That is why it is called “performing”. Lots of outgoing people in real life are deathly afraid of getting up on stage. It is the same thing in reverse and not that unusual.
@@rabefamily9146 doesn't mean it's not worth analyzing. i mean, he just did Jimmy Savile.
