What drives me crazy is how people allow Putin to pretend he does not speak English fluently which he does… You can see him reacting to what someone is saying in English in real time and pretends he needs a translator. Also, there’s a video of him speaking in fluent English. He pretends to be dumber than he is which is smart on his end and dumb on our end for not calling it out.

Condelezza rice used to visit him years ago and she speaks fluent Russian. She always said that he was teaching himself English and at the point where she last saw him it was just about on the conversational level.

Yes he can speak English, but it's his second language, and being the Russian president, he spends most of his time conversing in Russian. Could he have conducted the interview in English? Yeah, but it would have been more difficult and more time consuming. He's probably reacting to English because he can understand English, but he's waiting on the translation to make sure he fully understands what was said.

Barbara Walters interviewed Fidel Castro, the shah of Iran Jiang Zemin and Bashar al-Assad to name a few and she founded the show. American journalists have interviewed heads of hostile foreign states numerous times without issue

Actually agree with Whoopie and Putin. Where were the hard questions, like why are you all over Africa doing all sorts of mischief? Why are you so agressive to those Japanese islands? Will you invade there too? Why send tens of thousands of prisoners into slaughter? Why back a dictator who is using chemical weapons in Syria. Tucker came across as a fluff piece too much IMHO.
And he shouldn't have let Putin just smile about the outcome of the Munich Security Conference, when Kamala Harris told Ukraine they'd be fast-tracked into NATO and EU.. and 3 days later Putin invades. That was the bite, and he let Putin squirm out of it with a wave of his hand...

The question of which president Putin would prefer is an interesting one, because I think it offers a bit of insight into The Kremlin's inner workings. The View's hosts said "Obviously it's Trump", and they were right ... but it isn't quite as straightforward as I think they were presenting it.
Russia watchers will tell you that there was actually quite a bit of consternation in the Kremlin during Trump's presidency, precisely because of this "unpredictability" factor. It seems that Kremlin folks weren't too unhappy when he lost to Biden in 2020 - they knew that, in Biden, they were getting an 'adversary', but also, not someone who might suddenly blow up bilateral relations for childish reasons. So there's a kernel of truth to what Putin is saying there.
That said, obviously this calculus has changed now, because of the war. So I'm not saying that the View's hosts are in any way wrong here. Just that, when you dig into Putin's lies a bit more, you see how he tries to drizzle in a twist of truth (like all the best liars do). In this case, it suggests that although a Trump presidency will be preferable for The Kremlin, it won't entirely thrill them because they know the potential downsides.
Where I definitely *will* say one of the hosts has got it wrong is when Alyssa says that Putin wants to restore the Soviet Union. For a long time a lot of people in the West saw things this way, but it's become very clear in the last 5-10 years that this isn't Putin's dream at all.
It's true that he has said he liked the Cold War, because it allowed two superpowers to 'check and balance' one another. (Yes, that's insane. But that's what he said, in 2007 I think.) But he also regularly rags on Lenin - blaming him in part for the 'Ukraine question' among other things - and he's massively pared down celebrations on holidays that commemorate the Russian revolution to the point where they're non-events. Plus, it always helps to remember that the Communist Party are now Putin's main opposition in parliament. He's not on board with them in any way.
Nearly all of Putin's touchstones and references are imperial ones. THAT's where his heart lies - not in the Soviet Union.
This may seem like a silly bit of pedantry, but it isn't if you think about the people who live in some of the territories that were part of the Russian empire. Because Putin can and does apply 'imperial logic' to them, using his extremely bizarre and extremely fictitious view of history to convince himself that they should be back in the bosom of Mother Russia. Hence the war in Ukraine, the virtual absorption of Belarus and so on.
Since it affects tens of millions of people, I feel like it's worth making this distinction.
