After much trial and error, here's what I have learnt about how to optimize the settings for the the Samson CO1U.
Problems solved include how to fix the low sound problem and also how to choose the best settings in the MiDi Setup menu. I also to a sound comparison between the Samson and the internal mic from the iMac.
The link I mentioned in the video is: www.samsontech....

Thank you! I bought a C01U used at a second hand store for $5. Couldn't figure out why it was sounding so bad, started thinking that being that I got it second hand it just didn't work correctly. I tried your setting in the MIDI Setup and now it sounds great!

Oh my gosh! This was so helpful. My Samson C03U was making a "buzzing" noise constantly and I've tried every noise cancellation software I would to fix it. It didnt occur to me the problem was the mic's driver itself! Thank you so much!

OMG I have been trying to figure out why my Samson was sounding so crappy! I didn't know to look in the Midi setting for microphones. It was set to 8000HZ for some reason! THANK YOU!

    Control Panel\Hardware and Sound
go into the "recording" tab and double click the microphone shown and you can adjust it from there.

Thanks for the video, Brian. I just bought this mic, which came with an installation disk for Windows. My difficulty is that I can;t seem to adjust the volume on the mic at all. It's just set LOUD. I am a vocalist, and am finding that no matter how far away from the mic I stand (10ft) or how low I adjust the level in the audio midi window, it just stays the same.
Thanks for any help or suggestions you might offer.

It seems to me that one side is more sensitive than the opposite side. But first it was only with the addition of a pop filter that the mic became usable for close-in work. However, the pop filter really reduced the gain (and leveled the wave pattern), requiring that I increase the mic/input volume from 50% to 80% (no doubt, this increase will add to the ambient noise picked up by the mic.) So it's the devil's kind of bargain. Do you want to hear the sound break up with each of your plosives and sibilants? Or do you prefer a more controlled, normal speaking voice in exchange for extra noise?
Back to the 2 sides. I assume they should be equally sensitive in the cardioid pattern. But the side with the light and the headphones input seemed more sensitive than the other side. Can I assume the former is the "front" side and the latter the "back" side? If so the mic should be placed on the included tripod stand so that the front of the mic can be tilted backwards and up toward the speaker's mouth.l
(Incidentally, I'm not hearing any pops in your speaking, but the hisses ("s" sound) are quite prominent, indicating you may NOT be using a pop filter.)

    I am a singer and having a non-treated room.
Currently i use a Samson C01 u USB condensor mic but it captures a lot of room noise(hissing sound) along with my vocals.
Is this an issue with mic or because of mic?
If, I plan to upgrade my mic to get rid of noise, is it a good thought?
Which mic do you suggest from the list below:
    1. Lewitt 240 Pro
    2. AKG P120 or P220
    3. Se Selectronics xA1

i had set this mic up SOME HOW to where i had 0 background noise, i wish i could have rememberd what i had done. i do beleive you actually uninstall the driver and it will be an unknown driver in the usb and it comes out way cleaner plus if you route it properly to your internal soundcard you will be able to record at 96 - 192 which they say it only records up to 44 which is bull lol it all depends how awesome your soundcard is and it will be awesome

You might find you get a better sound quality if you don't speak directly into the mike (I detected a slight popping noise) Try pointing the front of the mike at your throat - not your mouth,

First off a small explanation of the difference of background sounds and background noise:
Background sounds = actual sounds like cars driving by, mouse clicks, typing etc. Background noise = hissing, static and windy noises that are not produced by an outside source.
      *Tip #1:*
Yeah, the Samson C01U it's a studio condenser microphone which means that you're really supposed to use it in a sound proofed environment like a recording studio or sound booth.
If you don't have access to a studio, a small windowless computer room that you've sound proofed yourself with tall bookshelves, rugs on the walls or whatever will do fine. A room with empty naked walls will never be optimal for this microphone no matter how small it is. Unless it's a tiny closet where you can only stand up and who wants that?
      *Tip #2:*
If you don't have a boom arm with a shock mount then get one of those. It will negate the vibrations from your keyboard and mouse (vibrations travel through your desk and into the mic and that's why you pick up movement sounds from the mouse and typing sounds) and that'll probably help as well. Vibrations are actually a bigger reason for why a microphone picks up mouse/keyboard sounds than the actual sounds themselves. I can't promise that the sounds will disappear, but I can promise you that they'll be significantly lower in volume.
Another thing that you can get are panels that has sound proofing on them (or a sound box) in order to concentrate the sound of your voice and stop sounds coming from behind the microphone, if you for example have a window behind your desk. Here are some photos:
      Panels:
      i.imgur.com/kVTaWYA.jpg
      Box:
      i.imgur.com/3uOTTZN.jpg
      *Tip #3:*
Another thing you can try is to buy a better cord for your mic. The one that comes with the microphone isn't very good since it's essentially just a standard USB cord. If you can get a proper and thicker studio USB cord, that would increase the quality quite a lot.
      *Tip #4:*
Using a software called Virtual Audio Cable. This software creates a virtual sound device on your computer. You can then reroute your microphone input through this virtual device (then set that device as your standard mic source in Skype and/or recording software) and reduce background noise that way.
It's a tricky software the first time you start it but if you check any guide on RUclips you'll figure it out in 2 minutes.
This gives you the same effect as noise cancelling headphones. Noise cancelling headphones have a small microphone that hears every sound coming from outside your headphones. It then matches the frequency of that sound and sends the opposite frequency into your headphones, thus cancelling out the sound.
      *Tip #5:*
Get a sound card with an active noise cancellation feature. This is probably the best option for removing background hissing, static and other "wind" sounds created by your microphone.
If you've ever used Team Speak you've probably noticed a significant difference in background noise compared to when using for example Skype. That's because Team Speak has an active noise cancellation feature.
