    Hi Chris, I'm working with a new version of SPSS and i'm trying to do what you just showed. Merge my demographics file with my datafile whilst having duplicate records in my datafile, but not in my demographics file. Do you have any idea how to get the same results? (I cant seem to click an option like 'non-active dataset is keyed table'. Thanks in advance!

      Hi Eva did you seem to find a solution to this problem? I have EXACTLY the same. Hoping you can help, thank you!

    what If I have duplicates in two dataset? and the valuse are numbers. I donto want the numbers to be repeated so the analysis becomes accurate. How can I do that? Thank you

    Say you just have the first file and you wanted to merge the duplicate cases so that you would have one entry per student but with the amount of aid added to get a total aid for that case. Can you do that in SPSS?

    I want to merge files with duplicate records and two keys variables, is that possible in spss??
    I have a file-A & B, I want to merge variables from file B to A by using the IDs (also has duplicates in both files) and by date. File A has an id and also a complete date , File B has ID as well as Effective date( The time frame of a particular id), I want to use the id as well the date such as the date from file A also matches i-e is with in the effective date. The idea is that ids are only unique if the variables are merge with id and date.

    I have two files one with duplicate records the other with one record per id. the file with one record per id contains additional records that is not in the duplicate record file. when I merge the two files it matches the file with the duplicate records with the file with one record per id but because the file with duplicate records contains multiple records per id it only add the record matched from the file with one record per id to the first record in the file with duplicate records. I need for the record matched in the file with one record per id to be repeated for every record match in the file with duplicate record matched for the same id

      I am using spss version 24

    • @ChristianHigherEd

      TheStoneman6666 Start from the file with the duplicate records and merge the non-dupe file into it. When going through the dialog boxes for set up look for the three radio buttons and select the one at the top. I think it reads, non-active data set has keyed variable. Finish the set-up and this should match all of the duplicate records with the matching records from the non-dupe file. I hope this helps.

    Thanks for this, but I hve another problem: How do you merge data from a repeated measures design where you have two
    key variables (person and time)? I can't put both in ascending order,
    so I keep getting error messages. so greatful for any hints

    • @ChristianHigherEd

      Lisa Groeticke You might try concatenating the person and time variables into one new variable and then merging with the new variable as the key.

    What if a few cases are missing from one of the datasets?

      The missing records will not match, but the rest will merge.

    Is it possible to merge the duplicate file into the non-duplicate file? I'm assuming this would require some sort of transposing of the duplicate file.

    • @ChristianHigherEd
      @ChristianHigherEd  9 лет назад

      What did you want to end up with? Do you want the final final file to have no duplicates? Or do you want to have the file with the duplicates to have all of the data from the file without duplicates? If the former, just remove the duplicates from the one file and then merge. If the latter, this video should make that happen. I hope this helps.

    Hi, I was wondering how you would merge two files with duplicates in both.

    • @ChristianHigherEd

      I don't know if SPSS has that capability. I have never done that. Sorry.

    • @Holmesymom

      SAS can do many-to-many, if SPSS can't. v8doc.sas.com/sashtml/lrcon/z1107839.htm

    What happens if there are fewer cases in 1 file than the other?

    • @ChristianHigherEd
      @ChristianHigherEd  9 лет назад

      cases or records that don't find a match in the merge will still be included in the new data set, but they will not be connected to a record. I find all of these unmatched records and delete them. The way I do this is in the data view I pick a column of data in the new data set and do a descending sort. This will put all of the unmatched records at the bottom of the data. Then I just delete them. When you do the descending sort, be sure to use a variable that was part of the duplicate records database set.

      @@ChristianHigherEd Do you happen to know if this is true with v26? I did a one to many merge and it seems like the unmatched records were dropped from the final dataset.

      @@808islandlife_HI Sorry, I only have v24, but it works in that version. Good luck.
