  • This video demonstrates how to merge Level 1 and Level 2 files in SPSS for the purposes of carrying out multilevel regression modeling. The example and files are based off Heck et al.'s (2014) presentation: www.routledge....
The current interface for SPSS does not match what is in the authors' text - hence the need for a new demonstration.
Copies of the data can be downloaded here:

    Level 2 data file: drive.google.c...

Hi! Thank you for your video. I wanted to ask- I have a data set with all my participants’ data points that are longitudinal. This is an intervention based study and we have different groups that go through the intervention at various times through out the year.. Say for example I wanted to update a rows with new data points for variables that already exist in my parent file from a new dataset- I have 3-month time points collected for participants-and I want to update my file with their data, what would you propose? Adding cases only duplicates data and adding variables does not work since they are already existing in the data set.

Hi Mike, thanks a lot for your very helpful video. I have to merge data, particularly I have a dyad dataset and need to match each leg of the dyad regarding their answers in questionnaires (both legs filled out the same questionnaire for example 5a is from leg one, 5b is from leg 2. I want to merge? these two. I created a new variable where both got 5, 5a and 5b, as I want to compare my dyad data. eg dyad 1 - 10. I don't know how I can do that without losing information?
