@@andrewkarl5174 Andrew, that is so cool. Dang, you should start a RUclips channel and put some advice up for the rest of us oldies. I’ve been doing judo for a year and BJJ ten years. If I wasn’t at such a great judo cub with such a great coach: I wouldn’t survive. How do you do it?
Oh that's me for sure. I started Judo at 53, I'm 60 years old now and a brown belt. The biggest tip I have for old guy Judo (but it really applies to everyone) is to stay relaxed. The younger guys come out all intense during randori, I look like I'm about to take a nap, lol. Conserve your energy then explode into your throws. If I'm going to get thrown I might as well be relaxed when it happens 😀.
100%. Too risky to resist the throws. If I feel that I missed the moment to defend the throw I almost throw myself to make sure I don't land in the dodgy position (say on my shoulder after partner throws me with some makikomi throw).
also, ashi-waza. seoi-nage is way too much effort. I can hit those whippersnappers with a dozen foot sweeps for the energy cost of a single failed shoulder throw. ;)
Good stuff, really. I am a brown belt and re-started my judo at 37 years. Man, randori is tough, I am flexible like a brick and I cannot do my favorite technique because my shoulder hurts. BUT, it does get better in time. The imporant thing is to keep coming and keep fighting. Accepting that you will loose, a lot, and you kind of want easy losses, because you dont want to get hurt. Still, old reflexes do come back and I can dominate the fight if I am fresh and relaxed. Suggestion: make a video for 40+ old, where you for example suggest the exercises to keep the flexibility and techniques that dont require too much explosive power. I think we should still be able to make pressure, even when 40+, but not many uchi matas.
You need to wait another 10 years before you can truly understand old guy judo Shintaro, and that’ll just be the beginning. First thing to master is the old guy sound when you get up off the mat
Got back to judo at 38 from brown belt background. Got black belt last year, and ... well I am that "old guy". I do it almost like described in the video, whithout the dirty belt trick. At first, I was rusty and just couldn't attack, so I kept defending and throwing with Sasae or Ura nage. I got some success but I was shameful. Now, thanks to mister Higashi and the crew, I've got this brand new idea : finding MY judo. From now on, I have a whole new world in front of me : getting creative and ... attack attack attack. Just last week I had some clues about what I actually love to do judo-wise, and I experienced burst of happiness, because ... not being able to attack, feeling like I cannot do anything against black belts ... all those old frustrations ( 20 / 30 years old frustrations ) that were haunting me are fading out. I have got my confidence back, and it feels AWESOME. I actually CAN do judo ! I cannot thank this channel enough for that. I mean it. --- To stay on this video's topic : I practice with the old judo mentality in mind ( Mifune Kyuzo is a model ), not using unneccessary strength, no fear of being thrown, no pointless muscular resistance. The effect is, I can end randoris whithout gettint out of breath. Plus, I found that I used muscular strength to compensate for my lack of technique. Mind opening. Happy judo everyone !
Hello Smyr Could you please tell me about your experience? I ve been doing bjj for 9 years, I am 47 now and would like to go into judo. Have you had any big injury? Any advice you could give me ? Thanks in advance
Shintaro. I’m 38 coming up 39. I cannot do judo the way I used to at all. Too many knee injuries, and other bits that come along with not being 18. Make an ‘advanced judo tips’ for older guys video. I guarantee it will get a shit ton of hits. I’d watch every one, as I’m trying to adapt, and struggling with it. Sometimes we need a complete overhaul, and I reckon you’re the bloke to do it.
Well you nailed my style of judo right there. I love doing that head hug when people give it to me. 37 here but I really believe in that maximum efficiency (lazy judo).
This Chanel is simply outstanding. Anyone who know anything about judo should be here in first place. This is educating and funny and educating again. Thank you coach!
I'm a 43 year old green belt (yes i started real late). Everything you did here (getting up slowly, taking too long to fix belt, etc) felt like a personal attack lol. Definitely interested in more old man judo tips.
this might be some of the best grappling instruction I've ever received. If only I had known about this back when I was still an old man (age 35, ten years of judo/jiujitsu and boxing, purple belt in BJJ) as opposed to now, as a 40-year-old retired senior grappler on his deathbed with only a couple years left. Jokes aside this is literally my style in a nutshell, the other guys in the gym call me "lazy man" ....they used to chant it at tournaments, "LAY-ZEE-MAN! LAY-ZEE-MAN!" also in Portuguese, "Homem preguiçoso!" highly embarrassing as I sit there hanging on for dear life to a much more talented and younger man who is getting increasingly frustrated that I won't get off him, THIS IS HOW I WIN DON'T JUDGE ME
LOL at tonight's practice I was the only 60 year old LOL, sensei 40 YO, others 30's and mid and early twenties LOL, I started at 17, went for several years during uni and after, then a 25 year absence back to judo, 2 years off during the Pan D and now back again LOL. Love these videos, a must watch! keep them coming!
I'm on my mid 30s, used to train judo when I was a teen. Tried a de-ashi and had a massive calf cramp, even my toes curled up lol. Now I know I should go for the old man version of it. I need this to become a series fr.
I'm 48 and recently returned to shuaijiao, which I only started training in my early 40's. I have to play an older man's game, rather than trying to win based on athleticism and speed. For me, that means working my countergripping, timing, and angles. Thanks for this great vid! OSU!

I am an 80 year old judoka teaching situational, no gi, self defense to young students. Unless it is winter there is no jacket to grab. I also teach very seniors, no gi, self defense. I use sweeps to off balance and then knee groin, head butt, heel of hand punch, hand cup to ear, Osoto and more. In watching your video your partner had on a jacket and knew judo. You won’t find that combo on the street. Thanks for sharing your video. A good step for seniors but the seniors I know are much older.

hahaha, love it, so damn true for a fellow 40 year old. This is the type of content we need in judo man, keep these going. I actually do the belt thing and take a minute to tie it on purpose.
An amusing way to look at the topic. However, I did an "Old Man's" Judo video three years ago, so this is certainly not the first time this topic has been put out there nor is it the ONLY video geared to older practitioners. Sensei Ashida (8 dan) used to teach serious old man's judo back in the 1980s, and that is where I first was exposed to the concepts.
Love it. I am a bit scared to hurt my fingers trying to catch and pin sleeves. I prefer grips around the chest that are more easily accessible as his chest can move and shake a lot less than his wrists.
So funny and true! Really made me laugh - thank you I got my dan grade at 46 and put myself through some pretty tough randori beforehand. The end bit was literally me. You should include the "cramp stretch" and "trouser cord re-tie" in the next video. Thanks again for your videos, you are an incredible coach
I just had my second judo training after 20 years of pause. Everything I knew back then has either been forgotten or my body isn't able to do it any more. And I lterally did something similar, trying to get a dominant position, waited until the opponent did a mistake. Today I'm paying dearly for even show up at the dojo.
I'm a chronically ill (improving) guy getting into judo and this is hilarious. Fingers crossed I can make a name for myself at the local dojo by doing old man judo.
i sincerely wish you all the best, living with illness/disability is a trial most wont know until they are elderly. I started judo at 7, competed at a high level - but had to give it up eventually due to being disabled from the forces. BUT - it stood me in good stead, learning to manage pain, learning the importance of mussel strength and that muscle/tendon strength can help mitigate other health issues. just be sure to ease into it, don't partner with overly enthusiastic youngsters and warm up and cool down well. I also recommend daily tai chi +cardio for balance, strength endurance and flexibility. Its more important to work on these things if we have a detriment compared to normal in my opinion. In my early 30s, I went to a tournament as a yellow belt. The only person in my age division to compete against was an older black belt! I was so high in the air I had enough time to adjust for a perfect break-fall 😆.
@@TheDAP8576 I got bronze (out of 3 people who were in that weight division haha). I'm 47. I started TKD when I was 15, after 12 years picked jiu-jitsu which I did for about 4yrs. Have a 2nd dan and almost to brown belt. Now I am taking my youngest of 3 daughters to judo and I am starting to feel that drive again. No idea how my 30kg overweight body will cope, but there is only one way to find out
I feel great at 37 but that old man de ashi barai is one of my best techniques since I was young :( . The rest of the video it´s pretty much what I do adding lots of half guard to get the "toketá". Thanks for sharing while I didn´t get the joke with the image of the dishwasher.

I love the unhook belt part 😂. The opponent will so impatient. I will try it. I am 37 years old blue belt and yes, easily out of breath then can not do throw properly.
60. Started with 10. I can still feel it in my neck, when I turn from youth to adult training. They were premiere league. First year I thought there is something wrong with their characters.
I'm going to be 40 in 2 weeks, I started at 38. You def have to turn this into a series.

I started at 34. I'm 36 now. Thanks you for this useful video.😊
I'm 26 and im taking that thumbnail personally
I'm definitely trying all this out, as an old man in his early 20s
Too real

Instructional please! I’ll defiantly buy it - 50 year old bjj blue belt, judo yellow belt.
Senior citizens tournaments start at 35 years in my area 😢
Shintaro .. thank you. I'll take it!
Hilarious video and the captions made it even better
Excellent editing on this one
I love the unhook belt part 😂. The opponent will so impatient. I will try it. I am 37 years old blue belt and yes, easily out of breath then can not do throw properly.
One of my favorites yet!!!
i've watched this maybe 10 times already. I am totally going to be "Get outta my face" and "Counter" during live sparring.
60. Started with 10. I can still feel it in my neck, when I turn from youth to adult training.
They were premiere league. First year I thought there is something wrong with their characters.
