It seems like they may have been half chasing it up until Michael Clarke's dismissal, at which point they needed 160 off 32.4 overs at 4.9 per over. The run rate to that point was 3.5, while the run rate after Clarke's dismissal was only 3.3. With Ponting's own score about 110 or 115 when Clarke got out, that gives zero numerical meaning to his last 40-45 runs, while the 172 potential wicket taking deliveries that Ponting, Warne and Lee burnt up between Clarke being 7th out and Ponting 9th were absolutely priceless.
How much I used hate him. He was so obnoxiously good both as a batsman and captain. Destroyed India in 2003 WC final, beat us to a pulp what seemed like everytime. Even when Punter got out there was 4 overs left. Brett Lee was more than good enough to deal with the majority of balls left which is what happened. Punter and Warne saved Australia here.
