A classic captain's knock. With backs against the wall, Ponting stood tall and carried his side, if not over the line, very close to it. Accompanied by last minute heroics from Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath, Australia drew the match and kept the topsy-turvy series at 1-1 with two matches left.

Yes you are right. This clip looks like they are chasing the victory target, but in fact off those last 12 and a half overs when David Lloyd mentions 89 to get, they only made another 37, losing two wickets, and between Warne's dismissal, and Pontings, they only scored 20 off 8 and a half overs.
It seems like they may have been half chasing it up until Michael Clarke's dismissal, at which point they needed 160 off 32.4 overs at 4.9 per over. The run rate to that point was 3.5, while the run rate after Clarke's dismissal was only 3.3.
With Ponting's own score about 110 or 115 when Clarke got out, that gives zero numerical meaning to his last 40-45 runs, while the 172 potential wicket taking deliveries that Ponting, Warne and Lee burnt up between Clarke being 7th out and Ponting 9th were absolutely priceless.
How much I used hate him. He was so obnoxiously good both as a batsman and captain. Destroyed India in 2003 WC final, beat us to a pulp what seemed like everytime. Arrogant to a fault and defended his players to the last, no matter if they were right or wrong. Strutting down the pitch like he owned the place......and had the talent to back it all up. A true legend of the game.

Ponting was an absolute phenomenon between 2002 and 2007. Still a damn fine player for two or three years either side of that period, but this was primetime Punter here.

The worth of this innings is more than a triple hundred because it's a 156 on day 5 pitch in England with clouds all around. You can't trust the bounce of pitch, you can't trust the swing but yet Ricky managed to pull out a stunner

I think this was his finest innings. Batted for a long time against an excellent attack with the ball reverse-swinging on a wearing pitch. The highlights won't show you all the yorkers he dug out.

Jonty was the best ground fieldsman at a time where ground fielding wasn’t that good. But ponting was an overall fielder. Started from point and than slip and short mid on mid off he was the best interms of direct hit and also exceptionally good in taking sharp catches in slip and point region

The first two shots are simply stunning to watch. The pull shot at 44secs is what you would show any teenager to teach. The slow motion replay of it is beautiful.

This actually goes into the books as one of the best knocks of the 21st century. Brilliant captains innings securing a draw from a probable loss. Those first 2 shots are simply majestic. Luv the understatement from Botham for that pull shot off Flintoff "he's hit this well". Yepp.
0:45 Look at the back foot slightly back and across. Probably the most perfect pull shot i've ever seen....and at a vital moment and a guy bowling 140kph whilst trying to save a game.
Put it in the textbook. It is perfection. It was so good it deserved the 7 with the no ball.
He also kept them on pace to chase down 420 for the win until very late. When 300+ it was starting to get everyone very very nervous. Sublime innings.

One of the most impressive parts of Ponting's game is the ability to hit a 6 with no pre-meditation of any form. It really is such a rare ability, doesn't seem to matter what point in his innings it is, if it's in a certain slot it just goes for 6 and looks like he could hit 400 of them in a row.
