** TRANSCRIPT **
On a recent three-week vacation to Thailand and Bali, I explored various cities, enjoyed local cuisine, and immersed myself in the culture, all while pondering the quintessential photographer's dilemma: should I bring my professional camera or rely solely on my smartphone? In this discussion, I share insights from my journey, comparing the performance of my Canon R6 with various lenses to my iPhone 14 Pro Max, particularly focusing on image quality in challenging lighting conditions and the convenience of immediate sharing and weather resistance offered by the smartphone.
Despite the high quality of most photos taken with my iPhone, I found it lacking in certain situations, such as during sunsets or in low-light conditions, where my professional camera clearly outperformed. However, the iPhone excelled in its weatherproof capabilities and ease of use, allowing for spontaneous and hassle-free photography, especially under unpredictable weather conditions and in moments requiring quick capture and sharing.
Balancing between the high-quality captures of a professional camera and the convenience and immediacy of a smartphone, I pondered various factors, including weather conditions, the need for instant sharing and backups, and the practicality of carrying additional gear. These considerations are crucial for travelers deciding whether to pack extra camera equipment alongside their smartphones, depending on their specific needs and the nature of their trip.
Ultimately, while I valued the superior quality of photos taken with my professional camera for certain memorable scenes, the smartphone proved to be a versatile and reliable companion for everyday captures, highlighting a trade-off between quality and convenience. This experience offers valuable insights for photographers and travelers alike, aiding in the decision-making process regarding camera gear for future vacations.

I don't have the latest iPhone pro, but even so, it is great for casual photos, but I don't think I'd travel around the globe without a "real" camera as well. 🙂
I appreciated your comment on only taking 6 images with your R6. I thought about how many times I've taken my R6 places and then not used it due to a concern with security or (for me) the added weight to carry!
A few more than six pictures, it was actually more than that - but I only used the camera on four separate days!
Great video! Just took a trip and couldn't leave my camera home also!
useful tips and great point, Kevin! esp at 6:31 ... and also the need to be aware at those tourist traps. 📷🤙🏼
appreciate it!
Another alternative could be a compact camera like a Lumix LX10 or ZS100, which would be kind of a compromise in between a phone and a big mirrorless or DSLR. They've kind of gotten less popular as phone cameras have gotten better, but their sensors avoid a lot of the quality issues you pointed out with low light or high-contrast scenes. I've got one that I take on long camping trips, and it's nice to have a decent zoom lens and 20MP sensor that fits in my pocket.

Hi Kevin, obrigado for nice video !
obrigado for your comment
Another great video. I also was in SE Asia in February and brought my camera and one lens each day of 20+ days. With the camera in tow it became a choice as to what I used to take a photo. Camera or phone. Indeed there were days where it stayed in my backpack. But for the most part the ability to choose was useful.
What a coincidence. Whereabouts did you travel to?
@@kevinraposo we travelled Vietnam and Cambodia and had a great time!

Worrying about gear would ruin the vacation, so it stays home for me, unless the trip is about photography.
