Oh wow, I thank you so much Sir for a lot of good tips. I just got Endive seeds from Italy but I will grow them in Thailand where I original from. I might need more of your advice later on. Thank you so much. Please post more okay. Keep the good works going. I am your big fan. Already "Subscribed"
Us Greeks eat endive as a dish called 'horta' you can look up a recipe. But essentially all you do is boil them in water until soft, strain and add salt olive oil and lemon (add salt to the water prior to boiling)! Yum
I appreciate your couple of recipes. It's hard to get into greens a lot of the time if you don't know what to do with them. "Eat raw, eat cooked!" isn't a recipe one can practically follow, so knowing to add some dressing or an egg really helps.
I grew up in Italy and our favorite salad was a type of leaf chicory finely shredded and with just olive oil and vinegar and salt. (cut and come again vs. heading). I found the seeds at a company called seeds of Italy online. They have many varieties. and so far in testing them my favorite is a roman variety of curled cutting chicory by Franchi seeds called " Indivia Riccia romanesca da taglio" and the packets have tons of seed to keep you going for quite some time.
I grew a broadleaf endive (what we call escarole) last fall and I am going to try to collect seeds this summer so I can grow them again. My girlfriend likes dandelion greens and escarole has a similar use. She loved it. Can't wait to grow more.
ai mate growing it this year. Zone 5 and 6 in this town. Cannot wait to grow it, love bitter greens, mixed with lettuce and home made dressings. Still jealous of your awesome "containers"
Mark I will tell you once again that you are fantastic! I managed to get three raised beds this year and started to grow vegetables. It's amazing! Comfortable, easy, pleasant! I owe it all to you, thank you very much! Now the waist will not hurt. Hahaha! Goodbye and have always success!
Started doing some work on my garden today - trying to clear a section of weeds and such - although what I really need is a working lawnmower, to cut the weeds down and keep them short. Plan to plant tomorrow morning.
Thanks, Mark! I am looking forward to the endive flowers. I only have a balcony so have crowd planted kale which has worked so far. I live in BC and had wild lettuce blown in as a weed. It grows vertical and is bitter but tasty.
Thank you so much! I love Endive too, even when both my grandmother and mother cooked it for a long time, so it got very bitter. We sometimes even threw some applesauce on to make it a little sweeter ;) I am definitely going to plant some in our garden!
Hi Mark, big fan of your channel, always fun to watch your videos mate, keep them going. You've inspired me to make my own fruit and veggie garden, and even to sell the produce as home grown produce at our local weekend markets. Was just wondering if you could do a video on homemade tomato sauce? The ones in the shop seem to be way too vinegar-y.
I enjoyed this thoroughly....I love your tips they are so informative and practical...I love that you inculcated ways that you cook/prepare your endive. Eating your harvest. Great information about Vit. K and manganese too!. I plan on moving to Las Vegas...wonder if the summers will be too hot and the winters too cold to have endive.
Hi mark, when you were talking about crowd planting and mentioned that most vegetables respond well to this method - can you tell us some of the vegetables/plants that don't respond well, from your experience? Cheers!
thank you for all your tips~ im am just getting started doing raised bed gardening~ we are going to try growing corn with green beans ~ i am trying to pair up some veggies because i only have a little space. im wanting to do tomatoes too but wonder what would grow with them~ i was thinking green onion, chives ~ is this a bad match?
hey there mark. my wife and i just bought a home and i have been thrilled that we can finally start a garden thats fit to last. ive watched tons of your videos and im going to start a compost using the hugelkulture method, then building a 6x3x12 raised bed. We live in western central florida, only about 300 ft above sea level ( if that matters). When the compost is ready, hopefully by this winter, what would you suggest that we grow first? we have limited sunlight, only coming from the west from around 1 pm-6pm. mostly canopied by large oak in the morning. i would appreciate any feed back. Also , your videos are great and i admire you doing what makes you truly happy, i myself am on the same path . it feels great, better each day. love what you do. peace
Nice tips mate I just cut the tops off all my salad. It grow back for next time. I have been saving salad seed from every new variety I get I have six or seven with some mustard's mixed in I plant a tray than do a few plugs close together. or do a mass planting in the raised beds. I find it a great way to do it you get a good mix at a snip ;-) I was watching your quail processing vids the other day I am in hatching season now though my last hatch was a bugger. I started too early collecting the eggs. The boys were not ready... Fingers crossed they are now lol. Andy at MC Dowel manor manner recommended the processing vids you did a great job. All the best Dave in Switzerland ;-)
G'day Dave, mixed salads from harvesting the leaves of several plants is a top power tip mate! Yes, quail can be fickle buggers at times but persist as you're doing and they will become very productive! All the best :)
Hey Mark ! Thanks for that sorry i dont have the money to support you on patreon but i will continue watching ! you are funny show us more of your sense of humour please ! :)
I did a crowd growing video about 4 years ago Sarah, but yes I will do a remake since the old vid could have been a lot more engaging... Here is the old one anyway if you want a peek it only goes for 4 mins ruclips.net/video/jzPmIQDNuUQ/видео.html
This plant may be a good candidate for Hydro, even, outdoor !!!!! But I will let it take hold inside a potter full of good soil, first. HOW deep do the roots go? / IS it like "American Chicory" where you can cut, and roast, the root and consume such as a Tea / Coffee ????
So harvest early so it won't be quite as bitter, correct? I've always wanted to try it, but I'm just not a fan of bitter vegetables at all. Thanks for all the information in this video as well. Appreciate all your hard work ^-^
It does help yes as the bitterness will get more intense as it matures but the plant has a natural bitterness similar to the oleuropein in olives. Blanching, cooking, soaking in water also helps reduce the bitterness :)
Self Sufficient Me Thank you Mark. I'll keep all this in mind :) it looks delicious, so I want to try it. Hoping it's not bitter like radicchio though.. Not at all fond of those.
Hi, what is the name of this advice? I don't like curl endive that stays low and doesn't grow up. I mean that those that grow low to the ground I like them like yours
I collect alot of seeds but it's my first time with endive seeds. Are they behind the flower or....? 🤔 I have some flowers dies off but not yet has anything dried out. I'm guessing it's in the pod behind the flower....?. 🤷🏻♂️

Hi Mark, thanks for your tips. We live in subtropics. Do you grow radicchio where you live or does it need a cooler area? Heard it is great gut food.
Mm very interested I will grow it. Amazing. 👍🏼

Maybe go heavy on the watering? I know insufficient water can make other leafy vegetables turn bitter. I haven't tried endive yet.

I can't wait to enDIVE right in to this video. HA!
I see everyone saying to grow together. Yet seed package says grow 6-8 inch apart. I’m confused?
I'm so confused. My grocery store endive doesn't look anything like that (spiky leafy greens) - it looks more like the Belgium Witloof.
We do not eat it as a salad.
