As someone who has listen to just about every live Queen show available, Freddie''s performance on the song is one of my favourite if all time. Sometimes Freddie could be extremely powerful when his singing style was just a little bit more restrained, as in this song

Brian May (guitarist) wrote the song, and started out playing keyboard.. but then makes a very smooth switch to guitar... everyone is great - all singing, drumming & bass! Brian May, the guitarist, wrote the song for a friend who had a hard breakup. Freddie of course makes it magic, with his God given voice. Freddie died exactly ten years later, on that same day. There is NO ONE like Freddie.

Brian May (guitar/piano) wrote this song about Freddie. Initially Brian said he wrote it for a friend who was going through a difficult divorce but eventually admitted that he wrote it for Freddie. He never gave details, just said "I wrote it about Freddie, and I think that is all I am going to say on that."

Queen is not a person. Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of:
Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and pianist
Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals
Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals
John Deacon - Bass guitar
Queen is an unusual rock band. All four members had amazing musical talent and each of the four members was a successful composer. Queen is the only group in which all members of the band have songs, that they composed, inducted into the Music Hall of Fame.
Each member of Queen was a strong and unique individual. They each had different musical tastes which is probably why Queen's catalog of music contains such a variety of genres. They wrote and recorded songs that are soft rock, hard rock, progressive rock, arena rock, thrash rock, glam rock, rockabilly, r&b, blues, pop, soul, funk, disco, dance music, jazz, gospel, folk, opera, show tunes, ragtime, etc. They would sometimes combine multiple genres in a single song.

The early 80s was Freddie Mercury at his best. Who could compare to Freddie Mercury the master vocalist at this point? He was on top of his game! And this concert, Montreal 81 proves it.
If you liked their balads you can go into the "Kind of Magic" album, maybe start with "Who wants to live forever", many other good songs there too. "Princes of the Universe" or "Don't lose your head"
Brian the guitarist wrote the song about a friend's troubles, but it's said that this friend was Freddie whose relationship ended around that time. Freddie had that wonderful skill, that he was able to make you believe, that he needed somebody to save him, independently of the writer's person.
