Instead of smearing Vaseline on the lens, why not smear it on a cheap UV filter? Or better yet, just buy a Pro Mist filter so you don't have to ruin your lens.
It’s an old technique that was used back long ago before the use of computerized stuff. I mean, when it was shot outside, it was used mostly for those “dream-sequence” effects like you would see in old films.
@@samuelsungstabtu7527 Yes, I know I was answering the previous coment. What I meant is that nowadays the not so awful thing to do is putting it on the filter and back then they did it like that too 🤣. Just fucking leave the lenses alone, guys.
Vaseline on the lens was a popular technique in “the golden age of Hollywood” for making actresses have a dreamy glow. I remember my dad telling me about that as a kid, way before RUclips even existed lol. He is a huge fan of classic film.
Old trick from the '70s, roll colored gel sheet into cylinder and tape to front of lens. Gives you a gradient colored circle around subject (and can squeeze tube for elongated effects. Also used different colored gel strips taped together into tube more multicolored look. An opposite approach to the petroleum jelly trick is to take a pencil erased and "erase" center of lens slightly (works on coated lenses without damage but always rub lightly). This I learnt from a top fashion photog back in the day. The model's face will be slightly defused at the center point and the rest of the shot is sharp (for example a model next to a perfume bottle. Bottle stays sharp but face is soft).
I’m here from veritasium giving you a shoutout. This video is ultra fast paced. I can’t imagine shooting so much footage and using so few shots. Thanks!
The mirror ones on the beach, this would work really well with a really large aperture like 1.2, so that you don't actually see the outline of the mirror.
I hope you guys do a part 2. An interesting one you should try is a old haze filter with the front misted with black spray paint to created a pro mist type filter.
This is my favorite video yet! It’s cool because you’ve more than proved your technical mastery, so your audience can watch this without the skepticism we would normally apply to the “check out these cool tricks” genre of videos. It was really fun.
Cool demo. I think a thicker piece of plexiglass hard mounted to solid surface rather than handheld may work better. Using less petroleum jelly on a clear UV filter may work better too.
Awesome to see you guys funding so many projects. I’m visually impaired too, but instead I’m blind in my left eye, and working to get into camera department jobs in the industry. How’s that for opposites? I ain’t giving up though, power to you all 🎉🥳👊
*Would you recommend the Sony A7c?* I’m looking at making RUclips videos (me at my desk), and possibly vlogs and photos. Does A7c work well with MacBook Pro? I’ll be downloading and using Davinci Resolve and FCP trial since they’re both free. Is there a Sony app that I can download on MacBook/iPhone so that the photos/videos automatically show up when I’m shooting, and I can than post them straight to social media? Sony A7c seems like the best overall camera? Best lenses for talking at a desk and general vlogs? I’ll also be buying: microphone, and a desk mic, lighting with a hotbox, a background light, possibly an ND filter.
You should see if there are “old-skool” in-camera effects that has been used by Hollywood and Indie filmmakers both in the past and present. Keep it up guys, this was good. Also, Vaseline on the lens has been an effect from the old days of Hollywood. They would use it as an in-camera effect for a dream sequence in a movie, or a sequence like what you guys did at the arcade & bowling alley.
I've always wanted to try the hack the director for the Zedd and Hailey Williams music video did for the stay the night song. He basically takes a none frosted light bulb and just swipes it left and right and uses it as a practical transition to slide between various takes of the same shot. It's executed perfectly in that music video and I've always wanted to find a reason to do it on a project 😅
Try the plastic wrap hack behind the lens and in front of the sensor. Putting “effects” behind the rear lens element had been used for years with film and early video cameras before digital editing was a thing.
Diffraction grating sheet gives you a colorfull spectrum from every light source. Its relly good when the sun is behind clouds and indoor lights. Try it.
Here's an oldie but goody: stretch pantyhose over your lens to get soft focus. White, black, and nude give you different looks. Use a red marker and a blue marker to color a clear lunch bag one side blue the other side red. punch a hole in the bottom slide the top of the bag over the lens. Get a cheap UV filter for smearing Vaseline onto it, not directly onto a lens. They are great to use when experimenting like gluing tiny jewelry crystals or glass beads with light that can enter the lens. sheer curtains in front of your lens is another trick.
@Potato Jet So what I’ve seen, the hack where you attach a camera to the car wheel, the car has to be moving faster, with more speed the frames become in sync with each other. (Though might have to flip/rotate the footage)
Yes part 2!! do also 10-15 secs seconds with the hack you did. It would be interesting if you could also make B-Roll product video just using only iPhone. I saw lots of cool video at tiktok by creators doing this kind of hack / content.
One of my favs is a half glass of beer. close to the lens it adds warm tones to an area you choose. Works great to get rid of anything yuk in the scene which you can’t control (eg filming bar gigs etc) and you get to drink the beer for work purposes of course!
Get a uv filter and spray it very lightly with a little bit of black spray paint or hairspray. It basically turns the uv filter into a promist filter. It actually works pretty well.
That Vaseline Lens Video Montage made it look like one of those cheesy sections of a film where the guy and girl that are in love spend the day together at the fair/arcade... except it was Gene and Sam. Haha.
Peter McKinnon made his breakthrough in RUclips through a 2 minute (100 sec) hack video if i remember correctly & I have been waiting for so long to see a video from Gene 😂😍.
Ok real question… when you put a full frame lens on an APSC camera you have to consider the crop factor, but if you buy an APSC lens for an APSC camera, do you still calculate the crop? Or is it already calculated?
They give you the actual, physical focal length, so if you want to know what field of view that will give you, compared to a full-frame camera, you have to do the math.
The water drop trick has been around for years. You can do it with the camera straight down too. A small water drop will stay on the phone as long as you don't hold it at an angle.
vaseline on the lens is actually an old Hollywood trick, and they didn't put it on the lens, they actually put it on a glass in front of the lens in a matte box. But I am sure someone had already mentioned that. Love the videos keep them coming :)
i want a part 2 of this but with real professional hacks that you can show us when actually trying to film a proper video ... how to handle the camera, equipment etc...
About the Vaseline trick :) - you can do it with an UV filter and use it on more lenses without having to clean it later. It is very very hard to clean, almost impossible and the chance of ruining the lens is pretty high.
Sam and Dylan always make my day. Potato is lucky to have such good friends!
This channel will not be full without them. You know what i mean. Also, that vaseline b roll shot was so awesome.
They all are hilarious they seem like they would be a hilarious group of friends
use a 5 uv filteer, don't put the vasoline directly on the lens (even a cheap one)
exactly
To him it’s like pocket change…
What would happen if u put it directly?. Can it not be washed?. Just curious
@@emmanuelhebron4436 Vaseline can damage some types of plastic and/or anti-glare coating
@@emmanuelhebron4436 from what i heard its really hard to clean

@@TimeTravelinc they used the vaseline on filters too, though. Filters have been around for waaaaay a long time.

New hack: don’t ever clean your lens and call it a filter.
dusty lens effect
Thanks, you remind me to clean my lens. I would forget it
😂😂
Dylan needs to do all the sponsorship spots from now on!! I can see commercials in his future. #FUcousinLarry
Dylan dropping existential crisis while on the beach is a big mood.
you really don't need expensive gear, as long as you have gaff tape and vaseline 😂
Fact

Real gaffers tape is really expensive lol OTOH maybe they should try throwing the camera at the tomato - just saying.

2:52 Sam's life hack to color the tape. That's funny dude, love you guys.
Part 2 for sure! This was fun to watch, that arcade scene was awesome
You guys crack me up. And now this old film photographer is looking into going digital too.
Throwing a like here for dsimplyd, best of luck on the project!
Long time no see! Glad you guys are back!
Haha this is so good. I need a sam and Dylan on my channel 😂
Loved the seventies scene so fun! Color your fishing string blue with a sharpie to get that anamorphic look and it works well
6:45 Please explain this balloon-throwing face!
Main content+bloopers in a single video. Doesn't get cooler than that.
Keep it up Deon! A mate of mine is visually impaired, started doing the same thing and recently just filmed a TV add for Ford Mustang!

I appreciate you always sharing your expertise in a fun way without making amateurs (like me) feel less-than. And the bowling alley montage was great
Man, we used to do the petroleum jelly on a FILTER!
Yup, much better to use a cheap UV filter, unless, of course, the lens costs less than the filter 🤣🤣
