"Humans have a way of showing up where you least expect them"
says Denise Crosby as she shows up where we least expect her
She was even teased in the previous episode, but she never stepped out of the shadows in that.
@@vrenak Yes! I'm sure that line was put in by the writers solely as an ironic meta comment on Denise's reappearance
But she engineered herself. It was her idea.
You learn about tasha year in a different episode.
I love that the TNG production team gave Denise Crosby the chance to rectify her decision to leave the show halfway thru the 1st season with her role as an alternate universe version of Tasha (in Yesterday's Enterprise) and this half Romulan child of the same character thereby giving her the meaty and in depth roles that she felt she had lacked originally.

*Stares in Klingon*
32:17 When I used to go to Trek cons in the 90's and Robert O'Reilly (the actor who plays Gowron) was there, he always had the lights turned down and have someone in the audience shout
"The Durass Family will rule the Empire!"
Then O'Reilly would glare down, take a flashlight and shine it in his face, make sure his eyes lit up, and say:
"Perhaps, but not _today!"_
Oh,man,that's a-COOL-story. I LOVE it. LOL.
It's one of my all time favorite moments in the entire series. I LOVE this. :)
I like the irony in Worf's story. He grew up believing in an idealized version of his people, where they were *exactly* the honorbound warriors as the stereotypes suggest. In reality, the klingons are no different to any other faction, with underhanded deals, treachery, twisting of the law to suit their own ends etc. just veiled in the trappings of honor, ritual and rite. In forming his identity around the idealization, Worf grew up to be the honorable klingon that his whole race *should* be; he was the best of them, the exemplar, by accident
I've heard someone called it 'inward honour' vs 'outward honour'. For most Klingons it is enough to establish the outward appearance of honour, victory one of greatest honours, so winning while appearing honourable is the ultimate goal.
Worf needs to feel honourable, and any victory obtained by means he himself perceives to be dishonourable would be considered a horrible defeat on his part.
Underhanded deals, treachery, twisting the law to suit their own ends, just veiled in the trappings of honor. This describes the inner workings of our military and police forces.
They're not perfect, but even Gowron was shocked to learn the council backed punishing Worf to hide their own garbage
I noticed that, and I also noticed that over the years, in both TNG and DS9, how very many times he had to sacrifice a great deal, again and again and again, all "for the good of the Empire." Trial by fire, indeed, and it made him into what may be the greatest Klingon of all. And for me, the payoff was in the final episode of DS9, when General Martok asks Worf to be his ambassador. Worf accepts, and Martok exclaims, "Excellent! Now I'll have someone to go targ hunting with!"
this just means we're one step closer to Cassie potentially watching Darmok
And Inner Light. So many episodes she's going to love.

I loved seeing the penny drop when Cassie finally remembered "Yesterday's Enterprise."
"with the skill of a Romulan."
Huge insult to a Klingon.
"You manipulated the circumstances with the skill of a Romulan."
Manipulation and intrigue are the instruments of people who have no honor and don't care about that, therefore not worthy of a true Klingon warrior.
@@robderich8533 A romantic comedy set on Romulus would be a Romcom
@@jamescheddar4896 .......damn it
jamescheddar4896 Any comedy set on Romulus would be a romcom. For that matter, a Romanian communist would also be a romcom. But a romantic communist comedy set on Romulus would be a romromcomcom.
I always found it odd that Klingons found it insulting to be compared to Romulans, will they both use cloaking technology on their ships for sneaky "stab them in the back" style combat.
"Also, Duras didn't complete the rite of succession!" Hearing such a geeky sentence coming from you Cassie absolutely sent me.
An extremely important sign she's listening and understanding and it's awesome.
@@thepaladinauthoryoutube She's hinted multiple times her dad is geeky/nerdy. She clearly took from him.
Former President Ronald Reagan visited the set when Part 1 was being filmed. He was observing the filming of a scene on the Klingon homeworld, to which he commented "I like Klingons. They remind me of Congress."
[extremely Worf voice] The Senate... Has! No! Honor!
Too bad they don't handle things like Klingons. We'd get a lot more done if they had to fight to the death for every disagreement.
Funny, Klingons remind me of Marines.
Cool story and funny quip by Reagan.
Reagan always had a line, slogan, joke... even about himself.
This is one of the most well-balanced episodes in the series. We get great character development from Data, Worf and Picard. Political intrigue. A war. A new villain. And it moves at a great pace.
They don't make this kind of episodes anymore, not too much action, mostly about drama, yet it is full of tension.

Gowron is so much better here than in the next series he’s in. The sisters were a great power couple but rarely given enough to do. Unification parts 1 and 2 are the only next season episodes you should not miss. After that I think season 5 became a little bit of a lull. Except Games which is an important episode for the overall arc of the show.
We're not scared of you, Baby Tasha!!! 😂😂😂😂 I love it!!!
Deep Space Nine is basically a series about the most important officer in starfleet history - Miles o’Brien
That's essentially right. However it must be clarified that Miles O'Brien was not an officer, instead he was an NCO. Hence he been addressed as "Chief".
O'Brien isn't an officer. He's a Chief.
"I am Chief Miles Edward O'Brien. I'm very much alive and I intend to stay that way."
He's not an officer; he works for a living.
@@globalcitizen8321 He was Senior Chief Petty Officer since 6×02! That's why he is called Chief since then
Remember back in Season 1 when Cassie didn't really like Picard? I knew she'd grow to like him the way we do 😇
I think she even mentioned the word ‘crush.’
If she watches The Inner Light, she may leave her husband for Picard (figuratively speaking, of course)
I don't think i'm exaggerating at all when i say that i've _never_ been as happy watching a reaction channel as i have been watching your whole journey into Star Trek.
It's just such a fundamental part of my thoughts and ideas and fantasies when i was little, it's pure joy getting to watch you get into it!
As great as PiB is, there are some others that get more hyped and watch every episode .... Just saying..... But I'm still watching each of PiB's with enjoyment and looking forward to each.
Amen

Honestly, the "watching only the best episodes" annoys me. For example she would've recognized Denis Crosby no doubt.
I'm enjoying the reactions by Jen Murray and Target Audience more.
I cant wait to see her reactions to Star Trek Generations and Season 3 of Picard.
"The council knew?!?" Love hearing the rage in Gowron's line.
"Your blood will paint the way to the future!"
It wasn't just the delivery of the line, but the look on Gowron's face afterward. The look of sheer disbelief and wondering what the High Council really stood for was what got me when I first saw the episode.
I love that line from Gowron, “Your blood will paint the way to the future.”

@@porflepopnecker4376 No, it never goes that far.
Part of Gowron's charm is his googly eyes. Apparently when the actor Robert O'Reilly auditioned, he did a take showing off his stare and they liked it so much they made it a part of the character. When TNG ends Worf moves over to Star Trek Deep Space Nine, and of course Gowron goes with him.
I'm really glad you chose these two episodes. Back in the day when these came out, the emotional levels among nerddom when Gowron restored the Worf family honor were off the charts. (I was there) These were truly iconic Next Gen Trek episodes and it was great to see you reacting to them. :)
Fun fact from a Star Trek convention nerd...
When Bob O'Rielley (Gowron) makes a convention appearance, his top fan club promoter comes on stage and yells "The Durass Family will one day rule the Empire!" and then Bob comes on and says "Perhaps, but not today." and the audience typically gives them a standing ovation. Then the Q and A starts. Bob's a great guy, 🙂
I was teaching and holding a class on model construction for kids, mostly early to late teens, for seven years every Saturday afternoon. It was held in a back room of a hobby store. During this time Next Generation was their Star Trek, and we built plenty of models and had many in-depth discussions pertaining to the stories. I showed them all sorts of ways to make their models look as good as the ones on TV. One afternoon I started building MY Enterprise, from 1966. They thought it looked weird but were fascinated with it. It changed the storylines for them as they saw how my Star Trek influenced theirs, yet just as good and cool. Conversations they couldn't have with schoolmates who just didn't 'get it' the same as my schoolmates. Great bonding time.
Cassie!!! I got chills when you realized the connection to Yesterday's Enterprise! How fun to watch you experience it!
Denise Crosby did come back to play Commander Sela. Even if she isn't part of the main cast of the series at this point, her appearances are always my favorite cameos by her. ❤
She also continues to play the character by voice performance in Star Trek Online.
It’s even more involved than that. It was Maurice Hurley that got her fired in the first place. Denise had a great chemistry with the rest of the cast, and the thought of bringing her back in the fold was a momentous opportunity for the writing staff. Ron Moore, and Michael pillar wanted to find away to bring her back in a semi regular role. But it was Rick Berman, that ultimately vetoed it. Her being fired and some exchanges between her, and Gene put him in a position to lash out with a personal vendetta.
According to Moore, it was Berman’s idea to have Tasha imprisoned, raped, and ultimately executed out of spite. I wish I could tell you. That’s the extent of Rick Berman sleaziness, but it continues for the rest of the franchise run under CBS and UPN.
She kind of regretted leaving in season 1, she didn't know TnG was going to be a huge success.
@@sungleong it’s too bad she didn’t get the same considerations that gates McFadden did when she was let go. True it was voluntary, but she was pressured to leave in the show.
I'm happy that TNG stayed on the air long enough for long story arcs. The series was a mix of story arcs and also self-contained episodes. The story arcs were so successful that subsequent series followed the same pattern. It has made Star Trek even more interesting as time has gone on.
with all due respect, TNG didn't have any story arc. it was episodic adventure of the week with a 2 parter sprinkled in per season.
DS9 had a story arc, the Dominion War.
TNG had call backs to certain episodes, it had recurring characters but it didnt have any story arcs.
@@JOJO-dq6yh I disagree, but that may be in the personal definition of "story arc". I'm not saying that TNG was a soap opera, but there were extended storylines. The Klingon Empire's power struggles were ongoing, and continued into the movies. The Borg storyline, which started with Q introducing the Federation to the Borg also continued into the movies, and all subsequent TV series. When Yar was killed off in the first season, that could have been it, but in "Yesterday's Enterprise", she comes back in an alternate timeline, then sometime later, we are introduced to her half-Romulan daughter, Sela, which sparks another extended storyline. There are more, but I've droned on enough.
@@seantlewis376 good points, i stand corrected, ty sir 🤠
Worf and Spock are similar in very important ways. Both are seen as being part of a culture different to humans. But both, within those cultures, are viewed as not being part of them. Worf, because of his being raised by humans and part of Starlfeet. Spock, because of his human mother. It's only when they are among those outside of the cultures they cherish, that they are seen as being part of them. Additionally, that very outsider status allows them to see the flaws, or blind points, in their respective cultures. And to avoid them. Ironically becoming greater representatives of what their people *should* be!
"It's so dark and fighty." A new favorite quote.
Watching only pivotal episodes will make you feel like so much fighting is happening. You've heard many times, I'm sure, the other episodes are what make the show great. The day in the life, social episodes with so much more character development.
I think Cassie was being polite regarding Redemption pt1. I had a feeling it wouldn't be her jam. We're leaving a lot of classic TNG behind so these "pivotal" episodes are seen to satisfy the canon-minded. As you say, it wasn't episodes like this two-parter that made TNG a classic. As far as her watching the movies, the only season finale / opener that's really needed is BOBW. This, Times Arrow and Descent are all inconsequential (yes, we know what Data is in possession of at the end of Descent, but you don't need to know for Generations).
@Wicked_Sushi it's funny because the movies were fun as a way to continue the story, but the show was where the true depth and excitement came from.
What I loved about this pair of episodes is the sheer amount of character development they gave to non-starring characters. Worf. Data. Kurn. Gowron. They all get their place in the spotlight and all get to DEVELOP.
Candyman makes THE Best Klingon!!!
Candyman? All this time I thought it was Captain Darrow. Though I was never a fan of him because he doesn't like soft-ass shit, such as Rocket Man, for example

In all honesty, I do think the Klingon way of life, at least in its purest form as it was under Kahless, is probably the most straightforward and simple shown in Trek.

This is another episode (well 2) where Data comes through. I liked the role he played as captain of the Sutherland, and having a less than subordinate first mate. He handled things well, and he proved he is very capable of being what he is.
And Picard was right. Too many tragedies have occurred as a function of men "just following orders". There is a time and a place to disobey orders. Meanwhile, Data's Number 1 tried undermining Data up until he realized, Data was right.

When they remastered the series in HD, they made a HUGE mistake in Redemption part 1--they over-brightened the shots with Denise Crosby, making it clear who she is before the audience is meant to know. As I recall, when I was a kid, you couldn't see that it was her until she stepped out of the shadows at the very end of the episode, and then it was like, "Whaaaaaaaat?!" Much more powerful that way. I know Cassie didn't recognize her right away, but I really feel that the HD remaster does a disservice to new fans watching the series for the first time by spoiling the end of that episode.
Great two parter that shows the great depth & complexity of Worf!
Also, I LOVE Kern's actor! I mean he legitimately SOUNDS Klingon!
Favorite part was seeing you put it together and remebering 'yesterday's enterprise".

When this episode first aired (pre-streaming, people) we fans talked about Denise Crosby's return for four months straight, speculating about how it happened until Part 2 would finally air. During these four months she was lovingly referred to as RomuTash, and I continue to call her that to this day!
"We need more Data." - Always true.
I had the honour of meeting all three of the Duras characters (RIP Barbara March - Lursa) from these episodes at a Star Trek Convention. The guy playing Toral is nowhere NEAR being a young boy...he was born in 1966, making him 25 years old when this aired.

All solid suggestions. _Highly_ recommend Inner Light. Cassie will love it. Some folks flat out hate Darmok, but it's among my favorites and it's practically iconic. Picard has a really great scene in First Duty, that I can hear in my head right now. Cause and Effect is great for one reason. I just went back to verify and [redacted] is on screen for LITERALLY 24 seconds, and it's still some of the finest acting in all 58 years of Star Trek. I have, more than once, seen that character listed among the "Best [x] in Star Trek". Yes, I know they are in that movie and also on that other ST show. Also those novels.

This was a great two parter, the only little annoyance about this story is the fact about deploying a 'net' with a bunch of ships in 3D space. Those Romulans could just have gone AROUND the Federation fleet. Ah well, never mind it. 🙂

S5: Darmok, *, Cause and Effect, I Borg, The Inner Light. *Bonus video: Unification 1+2 (Not completely necessary to me, but I think Cassie will like it IF she watched Redemption)
S6: Relics, *, Ship in a Bottle, Tapestry & Frame of Mind. *Bonus video: Chain of Command 1+2 (Otherwise, skip the first 2 for this 2-parter)
It's time. She's seen the Episodes she needed to see. It's time for Generations.
I found the Klingon politcal stories kind of like getting into a hot tub, once you ease into it, it's all good. Plus I like Lurse and B'etor
If you keep an eye out, you will occasionally see episodes directed by Jonathan Frakes (Mr. Number One himself Commander Riker) and he is a good director, who will also go on to helm some of the up coming films you'll be watching in this series.
I am a bit disappointed that you didn't get he WTF moment, when Sela appears at the end of season 4 (she is the daughter of Tasha!!!).
Yep this is the problem with only watching a handful of cherry-picked episodes and only getting a cursory taste of TNG.
But the slow roll recognition and putting the pieces together worked for me. It gave us a will she/won't she to keep watch for.

Picard tries to keep the Federation neutral when the Klingon Empire faces civil war and Worf struggles with divided loyalties.
🔔 It is AMAZING that Cassie didn't recognize Denise Crosby. Thankfully she remembered Patrick Stewart and Michael Dorn and the rest. 😏
She only saw her in three episodes, to be fair, and only one in which she had more than a small role.
I had a meltdown when I saw Romu-Tasha step out the shadows as a teenager
33:11 "I mean, sure the Klingons are great. Just that, it's just so dark, and 'fighty' and angry in there."
I think that's the actual official definition of Klingon culture.... 🤣
If you thought picards actions resulting in sela being born were crazy, star trek online carries on her storyline past the series where she inadvertently provokes the iconians into tricking the romulans into destroying their homeworld. worst part? her act of revenge for it was the very act that provoked them into doing it in the first place. time travel is complicated
The Episodes I'd HIGHLY recommend watching are the following.
- "Darmok"
- "Ensign Ro"
- "Disaster"
- "Unification I" and "Unification II"
- "Cause and Effect"
- "I Borg"
- "The Inner Light"
Most of these episodes either pay-off from previous episodes or set up future story opportunities. There are quite a few good episodes in the fifth season.
The more episodes I see in the comments, the more I remember what a GREAT season 5 was! Among those, I most highly recommend Inner Light, Unification (Cassie would be crushed if she skipped that one), and Cause and Effect for one awesome reason.
i agree with this list, though im not sure ensign ro is that substantial, but it does introduce a new character and without it, it could get confusing later.
Ensign Ro is pivotal for the next 2 series. And don’t forget Coed of Honor.
The Inner Light!
"Ro" is one of the best in the entire series.
I've been watching your channel for like two years and this is the most heart-warming occurrence watching you fall in love with Star Trek... which I have loved my entire life.
When they walk through the corridors with all the crewmembers standing at attention, that is called a Queen Anne's Salute, an old naval tradition.
The 2 best episodes in S5 are in my opinion, THE PERFECT MATE, E-21 & THE INNER LIGHT E-25. Both involve love stories with Picard.🥰
eh the perfect mate seems to be a bit of a throw away episode to me, i think she would get a kick out of cause and effect though
TBH, the only thing I think Cassie would really appreciate about The Perfect Mate is it's the first time Famke Janssen and Patrick Stewart shared the screen together. The episode otherwise doesn't really offer much.
@@Ambaryerno oh youre probably right about that

That's what happens when you only watch 4 episodes per season... You miss the biggest surprise reveal in the series
Exactly.
Half posterior'd reaction.
Still think it wasn't that big of a cliffhanger, once you realized who Sela was? 😂
Really enjoying these. It's like a mini recap of the series for me after watching so many years ago
When Sela showed up at the end of that episode, we were astonished! Lots of conversation was had about the possibiliities.
Darmok is fun, but it's not necessary. The important episodes of season 5 are Unification 1, Unification 2, Hero Worship (never skip a Data episode), I Borg, Inner Light, & Time's Arrow 1.
I think she's made a policy of watching the finales and premiers, so Time's Arrow (maybe my favorite episode of all) should be safe. Agreed on Inner Light. Definitely Unification! Cassie, in particular, will _not_ want to miss that one.
Cause and Effect! Need some episode with Crusher in the spotlight. And it’s pretty amazing.
@TeflonDave I picked episodes that further the storyline in later seasons... and never skip a Data episode. Inner Light doesn't fit that logic but it's one of TNG's best episodes ever. It can't be skipped.
The Inner Light!
We think alike. Outside of Time's Arrow 1 and 2 to head into the next season, I have Darmok, Unification I and II and I, Borg. Not a big fan of inner light. I prefer I, Borg over Hero Worship but yeah she has an obvious liking for Data.
I can’t believe Worf accepted discommendation to prevent Klingon civil war only for the war to happen anyway.
Good point.But,that civil war was-GLORIOUS-wasn't it ????
That’s what happens when you make deals with dishonorable people. Worf thought they were Klingons, but they were just politicians
Season 5, Episode 25. "The Inner Light" will be your favorite episode. It will, no doubt, be voted at the top in Patreon. It still makes me cry in the end. So great.
I was so excited when Cassie figured out the connection to Yesterday’s Enterprise
If you ever get to DS9, you can not skip episodes, it turns into a long story arc with season 3..
She's said multiple times that she's a movie reaction channel. This is all so she can watch the movies. There's no chance she's watching DS9.
@@jkhoover too bad, because it crosses over in season 6 with DS9..
@@tdrewman I don't understand what you're arguing. I'm quoting her. There's no reason to argue with me. I don't believe Birthright or Bloodlines will get the votes to be watched. Even if they do, that's the only DS9 she'll be watching.
It will start a chat war about witch one is better or, witch one to watch first. deep space 9 or Voyager 😂😂
@@tdrewman I don't understand what you're arguing. I don't believe Birthright or Bloodlines will be voted in the top 4, but even if they are that's the only DS9 she's watching. Literally her words.
you need to watch Star Trek: DS9 to really see miles and his wife shine.
i agree and id love to see what she thinks of sisko, but its very hard to only watch a handful of episodes per season of ds9, i do hope she moves on to DS9 after TNG though
And Keiko wine.
According to some members of her community she's only watching TNG episodes in preparation for the star trek movies.
It's unfortunate but there is a channel currently reacting to all of DS9, he's currently halfway through season4.
There's.also another channel reacting to all of TNG and she seems to enjoy the show. I can see her deciding to react to some/all of the star trek show 🙂
I'm sure Unification will be among the top suggestions for Season 5 and I wholeheartedly agree. Since you choose 4 episodes, yet there are a number of excellent/classic episodes in this season, I hope you'll consider counting both parts 1 and 2 of Unification as a single selection.
it's suboptimal to watch unification after watching star trek vi rather than before since it drops hints as to the events of star trek vi at about the same time the trailers for star trek vi were showing kirk getting vaporised.
@@0biwan7 Spoken like a true fan who cares about the details. Yes, I remember watching the episode when it first aired and how it made reference to events in ST VI just before the movie was about to come out. Despite continuity technicalities, Unification is a worthy pair of episodes (esp. Part 2) for the interaction between certain principal characters. In my humble opinion, the ending in particular, when no words are spoken and we get to see an old pro convey long submerged emotions with just his facial expression, is a poignant moment in the mythology that should not be missed.
"Dark and fighty and angry" is the most apt description of Klingons ever.
Luisa and Be'tor basically said to Picard that if Gowron dies after the Duras family takes over, yes the alliance will end. But the point if that meeting was to imply that if Picard backed the Duras family, they would consider Picard a friend, even if the alliance with the Federation ends.
Of course, Picard decided not to take their bait.
why would Picard care about being considered a friend if the Klingons become enemies of the Federation? how would he benefit?
The Duras sisters are two of the sexiest characters in television history.
just the younger one
