    This is a very good take on the swish pattern. One of the biggest challenges I found with the swish pattern and other strategies is working with predominantly verbal modality. The majority of NLP techniques seem to cater to visually oriented individuals.

    There are many styles of this technique. I used two or three of them about 20 times, repeatedly. That was October, 2 years ago. I also couldn't drink coffee for a while and I didn't even ask for that. Hey Damon. I really liked this and started using this version of the Swish. Clients are enjoying it and seeing benefit from it. I did some additional research and I thought I would share this here. Let the client know that as you repeat the Swish multiple times, it may be harder and harder to form the "before" image until it's possible that you can't form it at all. When that happens, just let me know.
    This way you know you've done it enough.

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  Год назад +1

      Hi Dan. The objective of the Swish is not to make the trigger image harder and harder to make. It's to make the trigger move you toward becoming your ideal self and away from the destructive habit. Your clients may find it harder and harder to make the trigger image, but that's not the goal of the Swish. The goal is to interrupt the compulsive pattern and direct the compulsion to a behavior that aligns with your values.

    Damon, please: how many times do I have to repeat the swish pattern for the same problem?
    And how many in general, like a daily practice?
    Many thanks😊

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  Год назад +2

      It usually takes 7 to 10 reps, but it may take more, which is why you want to test it. After you do it 7 to 10 times, think of the trigger image and if your ideal image immediately replaces it, you're done.
      You do not want to continue practicing it anymore for the same problem. The true power of the Swish Pattern is when the change becomes unconscious. If you keep practicing it, you will be overly conscious of it (self-conscious) and then you're more likely to negotiate with yourself and end up doing the unwanted behavior. For example, you don't practice thinking about brushing your teeth. You just do it, but if you thought too much about it every morning and every night, you would be less consistent about doing it.

      It's the ideal you, whoever the ideal you is to you, who has solved your problems. It's the you who doesn't smoke and instead spends your money and your time on something else that is healthier. You don't need to see all of these details. Just make an image of you that somehow let's you know this is the ideal you who is living a fulfilled life.

    Great content! Consistent explanations! Question:
    What if the desired state is very "setting/situation dependent" and it seems that a more contextualized image would be useful? For example, say a person is consistently grumpy in a specific setting, a setting which they can't avoid, say a workplace. Would you discourage a more specific swish image of them simply being happy in that setting? Are there times when more specific target images are good to use?

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  Месяц назад +1

      If you do it that way, you're chaining, not swishing. The Swish Pattern uses identity, which is what makes it so powerful. If you take that element out of it, it's not the same. What you're describing is more like future pacing, which is necessary as part of a NLP process, but it won't generalize outside of that specific context. It also needs to be the last step of a process that overcomes whatever was stopping you from being happy in that context.

    Some people do Swish Pattern uncounsciously when they buy a new smartphone, a new prescription glasses, a new car, a new notebook. They shift their perspective, it get broader, higher, 120hz, bigger, 20/15, etc.
    Or, about technology, when they hard reset their smartphones/notebook.
    We tend to use technology to help us build our mental images.
    It's also an analogy, we can use this story to induce a conversational hypnosis changing or use this analogy as an exercise.

    Hi again...preventing the yo yo is confusing to me....please, in your words, could you say it?...after the state has been broken?.....do you ask the client to let you know when you have swished the better over the negative?....ideamotor or nod or? can you ask them to open eyes and then close to break state? Again, what do you say so as not to creat a yo yo effect...thank you for helping me understand.

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  5 лет назад +2

      You should be able to see it in their posture and other physical signs when the swish happens. Make sure you're looking for it. You can ask them to nod when it happens if you're not sure. The yo-yo effect is when they reset the pictures by moving them back from where they swished them. In other words just after swishing the images, you don't want them swishing the images back in place when they reset them. You want them to make them suddenly appear in front of them as they did right before they swished.

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  Год назад

      Humans are blessed with the capability of creativity, but unfortunately we tend not to leverage it's full potential. Your ideal self is the ideal you who has solved all of your problems and who is living your highest values. Imagine what that you would look like. Just because he doesn't exist doesn't mean you can't imagine him. It's the image of you that when you look at him, you just know he's your ideal you. It might take you some time to create but it's absolutely worth it.

    I am a Forex trader and always sell too early ( fear of giving up profits) and this limits my success.
    I think the swish pattern could help me.
    Should the swishing picture be something general ie a successful me: wealthy, healthy, sharply dressed etc? Ie contextual free.
    And how many times and sessions should I do?
    Many thanks

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you for your question. Yes, this should be the ideal you that has solved not only the problem of selling too early but also the wealthy and healthy you. You can be sharply dressed in the image as a way to represent the ideal you but don't get too detailed or specific with this content. The less detailed the more likely it will generalize to all areas of your life.
      I would do it 7 to 10 times and then test it. Associate into the situation that used to trigger you or compel you to engage in the behavior you don't want to engage in and see if the image of the ideal you automatically comes up and blocks out the other image without trying to make it happen. If you get that response, you're done. Don't practice it anymore. Let it go unconscious. It will be more powerful that way.
      If you don't get that response, practice it until you do.

    Hey Damon, why shouldn't you be associated when making the wanted behavior image? wouldn't it be less immursive being disassociated?

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  7 лет назад +2

      Good question.
      If you want to associate to get a feel for how it will be like when you become the ideal you go ahead. However, make sure you disassociate before complete the work. The reason for this is if you stay associated you will be less compelled to move toward your ideal self because you will feel like you're already there. It's like wanting to shed 20 pounds and giving yourself the feeling that you've already done it so there's no need to implement new behaviors like exercise and a better diet.
      Many NLPers make this mistake. They create the feeling of already having solved a problem when they actually haven't in order to make themselves feel better, but feeling better (though not a bad thing) in this case will prevent you from taking action.
      When you future pace, which is what the last part of the swish pattern is (seeing an image of your ideal self) you wan to disassociate and make the image compelling so you move toward it even unconsciously.

    I'm a bit confused on how you said not yo- yo but at around 8:10 min you say., put your negative picture on top and your negative on the bottom and then do it again. So do I put the negative on top and re-do or no? And if not when I put the positive picture on top when I re-do it do I just imagine that or do i need to break the negative one again like the first time I do it.

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, when you reset the pictures with the negative one at the top don't move them back into place. Instead just make them appear again so that you don't get the yo-yo effect. If you swish them and then bring them back that's how it will actually happen when the habit is triggered; first you'll see the ideal you and then it will automatically swish back to the compulsion image making you carry out the bad habit.

    • @DamonCart

      Because the Swish Pattern is a piece of identity work, it will often affect limiting beliefs. However, if you want to go directly at changing a limiting belief, the Swish Pattern lacks precision. The Self-Concept Model is a more expanded and more precise way of transforming beliefs.

      Good question. The truth is you don't have to visualize vividly to get powerful results. I don't. I only see what's important. You probably visualize better than you think. It's just that it's unconscious. Instead of trying to work your brain to construct images. First start by finding what you already do. For example, how would you recognize your best friend? You must have an image in your mind of him or her that you refer to. Find it. Imagine you're in a crowd of people and your looking for your friend. How do you know which person is him or her?

      You can't go at confidence directly. You feel true confidence when you're certain about something. You don't want to be certain about flying a plane after only one lesson. What if you don't want your ideal image, in the corner of the image of the unwanted behavior? Or to the left of it, or right, above or below? Let me explain. I was doing the swish pattern on road rage. LOL! However, I tend to like to sling shot the unwanted behavior image out into the far distance into space, shrinking and disappearing it as it leaves the foreground and descends into background into nothingness. And I like the ideal image to come sling shot forward, having come from that far distance (space) and emerging into my foreground very large and in color. Now, I was told by Steve Andreas (who obviously knows his stuff) that this is not a proper swish since the images are 'sequential' and the images are not connected to one another and the ideal image isn't overtaking the other. I'm hoping this is making sense! So, my question is, there are very different schools of thought in NLP about proper procedure. What is your take? Is it OK to bend procedure if you are getting the same results? Maybe I'll just call this is a sequential swish! HA! Others I have worked with prefer to turn the knob on the TV to change from unwanted behavior to ideal image. Again, their images are also sequential. Sometimes I get tripped up on doing things the proper way, when innately I get more creative than procedural, though I know the proper way to do things fundamentally. Sorry- long-winded!

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  7 лет назад +1

      Steve is very procedural and it's one of the reasons he's so damn good at NLP. However, he's acknowledged to me that sometimes processes will work just as well if you don't follow every step precisely. As a teacher he would suggest (and so would I) to learn it properly and precisely first and then if you want to color outside the lines go ahead. Know the rules before you break them. In this case the Swish is the Swish because the two images are touching and they slide one from the other. For most people the two images touching each other is necessary for the process to work. If you're getting the same or better result a different way, then do it your way. NLP is outcome and results oriented. there is a lot of sloppiness in how NLP is taught today. Steve has pointed out to me a lot of my gaps in understanding and it was always due to the way NLP was taught to me. To many NLPers these small details seem trivial but that's because they lack understanding. The deeper you go the more you realize how important these details are.

    • @lanibuess4118
      @lanibuess4118 7 лет назад +1

      I agree with learning the fundamentals or building blocks first, for sure, before you attempt any form of creativity. And I think it's very important to find proper trainers and do exhaustive research to find them. I also think there's a total lack of conversation among NLPers regarding the small details and why they are so important, or not to others. I'd like to hear that discussion myself.

    Personally I find it ideal to define what a better version of me is. Create as many references as I can think of, for the values, beliefs, decisions, behaviors, etc, that the person I invision is.
    Then when it comes to swish I do what you say, as simply:
    Have a better version of you swish into frame, rather than 1 particular circumstance.
    I don't know about anyone else but since I can't imagine stuff in 2 seconds perfectly. I just imagine a green square, the thing I want behind a red square and break through to obliterate the red square and see the green sqare, then feel the better emotions and feelings, that the person I invision has.

      I agree. It's good to elicit your values and criteria for what you want. When you know what you want, it will give you a sense of the ideal version of yourself.

      I would first get clear about why you're seeing this person negatively. What is the positive intent of seeing them negatively? There may be a part of you that is trying to protect you and sees something in this person that could harm you. Regardless if it's correct or not, you will need to sort it out in order to change the way you feel about them. You can use the Swish pattern for anything. Test it and see if it works, but again I would get clear about why you're seeing this person negatively and I would get clear about why you want to see this person in an ideal way. Be careful with idealizing others.

  • @TomKerasiascom

    I have a question. The picture of the idea you is small and in the background. It is the ideal you who has conquered the unwanted behavior and is in NO particular context, doing NO particular behavior. It is also DISASSOCIATED (as mentioned in the video).
    When you swish and this picture breaks through and destroys the unwanted behavior picture, at that moment, do we attach positive feelings to the "ideal you disassociated picture"?
    Do we feel nothing about this "ideal you disassociated picture" as it breaks through and leave it DISASSOCIATED?
    How should we feel to have the swish pattern work effectively?

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you for your question. Yes, absolutely, the ideal image of you should invoke a strong feeling. The ideal you should be a compelling image so much so that you feel drawn into the image like you want to immediately be that ideal you. This is what will make you drawn toward becoming that you. The point of practicing the Swish several times is so that it becomes unconscious. Any time you find yourself tempted by the compulsory behavior your mind will immediately swish automatically and refocus on the ideal you image that will compel you to move away from the compulsory behavior you don't want to do and move toward becoming the ideal you.

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  4 года назад +1

      I address this in the video. The reason you want to see an ideal image of yourself not doing any particular behavior and not in any particular context is because you want this image to generalize throughout your life as widely as possible. If you attach a specific behavior (which is called chaining by the way) you run the risk that the person won't be able to perform the activity that you're chaining which would then cause the person to smoke instead. For example, what if your client wakes up in the middle of the night and wants a cigarette and you chained exercising to it. He's not going to exercise in the middle of the nigh. He's going to grab a cigarette. Rewatch the video and see if it clears it up for you. I've also done another, more recent video on Swish. Check that one out too.

    What if your client is not visual and struggles to bring up images?

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  7 лет назад

      That's a great question. You can swish sounds and you can swish feelings. It will take getting creative though. For voices or sounds you want to elicit where she puts sounds or voices in her personal space that are meaningless or have no effect on her to swish down to. And you will need to know where the sounds are that are the equivalent of the big bright picture right in front that you would swish up to for the visual person.
      For feelings you need to make the distinction between the evaluative, emotional feelings and the tactile, proprioceptive feelings. Evaluative and emotional feelings are always the result of seeing or hearing something externally or internally. Those are not the feelings you want to use for swishing if the person is truly kinesthetic.

      Paraphrasing: "When switching out the cue image for the new self image JUST PRETEND you are doing it. Many people don't see these images consciously, they just do it "as if" its real. As long as you pretend well that you can see the images, it works fine.

  • @awriterchick

    I'm confused as to what the "ideal you" picture is supposed to be. For instance, if I'm eating too much candy, I think I'm supposed to see my hand coming up to my face with the candy but I'm not certain what my "ideal picture with no behavior" is supposed to be. Me with my ideal body?

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  5 лет назад +2

      You could do that, but take a moment to create an image of your ideal self not doing any particular behavior and not in any particular context. See this ideal you, the you who has already solved this problem. Allow this to happen. You don't have to know exactly what it is about the image of you, but something about the image lets you know that this is the ideal you who has solved all of your problems. You'll know it when you feel extremely compelled to move toward that image and jump into being her. But don't jump into the image. You want the feeling of being compelled to be your ideal self rather than being compelled to eat candy.

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  8 лет назад +2

      The main part of the Swish Pattern is that you're replacing the unwanted behavior with an image of the ideal you who you want to move into becoming. If the big black X works well for you, I would see the unwanted behavior and then draw a big black X over it and throw it away just as soon as you replace it with the image of the ideal you who has already solved this issue. If you just throw away the visual of the unwanted behavior and you don't replace it, another unwanted behavior or unwanted image could take it's place.

      Interesting that your channel name is the visionary and you say you can't visualize. Tap into how you chose that name. It's a visual term. Everyone can visualize. Even though your visualizations are unconscious doesn't mean you're not responding to them.
      Pulling out your hair sounds to me to be very kinesthetic. You can use the Swish Pattern in the kinesthetic channel if you're having trouble visualizing. However, visuals are the best to work with because you can take in many details and simultaneous information at once. With auditory and kinesthetic channels it's hard to do that.
      To Swish kinesthetically, use the same instructions I give in this video with tactile and proprioceptive feelings. What do you feel right before you feel compelled to pull your hair? What is the body sensation feeling of the ideal you? Swish the feelings in your body.

    Hello Damon, how many times do we need to practice this model until we get results daily? Is there some pattern to follow?

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  3 года назад

      The Swish is a pattern. You only need to practice 7 to 10 times only once per change you're wanting to make. Always test it after you've done it 7 to 10 times. When you think about the thing you used to feel compelled to do that you don't want to do, what happens? If an ideal image of yourself swishes up and takes the place of the previous image, you're done. Let it go. Let it slip into unconsciousness. It actually works against you if you try to practice it more because it keeps it too conscious. We don't want to be self-conscious.

    Hi Damon. A great story but actually it's missing 2 elements that make it very ineffective for many people. Want to know how? I've not had a headache develop EVER in 33 years after really learning to do the swish with additional elements to what you suggest. PM me and I'll share it with you. and you'll get it straight away.

      This sounds like a sales pitch.
      What I explain in this video is the Swish Pattern with no missing "elements". Whatever you're doing, it's probably a different pattern or process than the Swish Pattern, which is fine. The Swish Pattern isn't the only game in town.

      @@DamonCart I have nothing to sell but when you hang around with Ernest Rossi, Will Macdonald, Eric Robbie, Richard and John, you pick up other stuff. I enjoyed your video discussing the visual swish. I was going to share with you, the auditory and kinesthetic additions that make it killer. I don't teach the NLP programmes any more, as many of my friends do great jobs, but when I did, I taught this, as I found many people who'd tried the visual swish didn't get the results I did. C'est la vie.

    • @steveconsalvez4320
      @steveconsalvez4320 2 года назад

      @@DamonCart Cool, so part of my proposition was that (because you say you can swish in other modalities and why would you need to?) an effective swish pattern is one that utilizes the client's most available sensory perceptors, so if they are not very visual, it won't work properly at all. It's a nice video. I thought I'd be today's gift horse and cup overfloweth, and if yours does too, we're all good. :)

    • @DamonCart
      @DamonCart  2 года назад

      @@steveconsalvez4320 Even though the visual modality might not be someone's preferred modality, it's still often very effective to do it in the visual modality because you can access more simultaneous information in visual than you can the other modalities. It's a myth that you have to use a preferred modality to make these techniques work. The only reason I would not do it in the visual modality is if the person struggled so much to visualize the Swish that it interfered with the process.

      @DamonCart  5 лет назад

      Sure it's just thinking about something completely different. If you were really focused on a movie you were watching and I suddenly asked you what you had for breakfast, in that moment your focus of attention on the movie would vanish as you recall what you had for breakfast. Your state of focus has now been broken. After you answer the question you can return to your state of focus on the movie.
