- With less than four weeks to go until the crucial Hartlepool by-election, G&T got out of the London bubble to the town that will prove to be the first major electoral testing ground for Labour’s leader, Sir Keir Starmer. It’s a very traditional safe Labour seat, but the party’s contest there with Tories is absolutely neck and neck, and Boris Johnson could well take the seat as his latest Red Wall scalp. Times Radio put together a small focus group to take the political temperature in Hartlepool.

I enjoyed a weekend in Hartlepool a few years ago and visited the harbour. I won't be going again. Too many inward looking negatively nostalgic jingoistic and xenophobic Brexit voting elderly and poorly educated voters who believe that national sovereignty is diluted because people speak Polish in the park or a spotty French lad is working in a bar for a few months. A complete unwelcomng anachronism. Just imagine the horror of having Nigel Farage and Richard Tice and their stormtrooper henchmen turning up on the doorstep to kid you that they have your best interests at heart. Brexit is a divisive isolationist project that has erected a mental Iron Curtain at Dover and imprisons young people on this island. Such a shame that ending freedom of movement denies educated young people from Hartlepool, albeit few in number, of the chance to enjoy life for a while in Hanover, Huelva or Helsinki.
Pretty accurate . The people of Hartlepool can look forward to everything that Farage and Johnson promised them. At least it’s only a short drive to Barnard Castle for an eyesight test.

@@timcomley3241 Well I hope they are. No benefits come from trying to turn the clock back and live in a Palmerstonian time warp.
I do hope they read this, every time they do it will remind them why they stopped voting Labour.
@@TheAmericanPrometheus Well now they have elected a Tory mp , Hartlepool will be transformed won’t it !! If only half of the promises made to them come true, Hartlepool will become a paradise.
