      Capacitors often fail short-circuited, so even if it's just a filter, if it's bulged replace it. Also having live voltage on the heat sink is very suspicious, usually on the power mosfets used in these power supply the heat sink tab in the TO 220 package is connected to ground, not power...

      @@HMan2828 Live heat sinks are completely normal and very common in switching power supplies. Here it is likely connected to the Drain of the mosfet. Even if it was connected to circuit ground, you can still get a zap off it because circuit ground is not the same as earth.

      I've got a question for you and I'll ask AVE the same one.
      Is it possible to store static electric build up in a batery pack? I ask because I finaly got the media blasting cabnit to stop shocking the piss out of us at work and I thought what if instead of grounding it out to the maching you dump the charge into a rechargeable batery pack.
      Immagen, you're blasting and at the same time you are charging you phone or drill packs or some AA batteries for the ol' lady

  • @Basement-Science
    @Basement-Science 4 года назад +2

    I would say there is a decent chance the power supply can be fixed by replacing that bulged cap. The control IC in a switching power supply can detect many types of faults. With the dead output cap, you likely get a very spikey output voltage which will be measured on the feedback pin of the IC.

    That little potassium chlorate cell caught my eye....

  • @MrDmbright65
    @MrDmbright65 3 года назад +2

    Ok, you were LITTERALLY looking at the problem! That bulging cap on the switching power supply indicates that it FAILED. I've fixed about a dozen of these things over the years and, except in one instance (bad peltier module), the cheap quality output cap on the switching power supply is the problem. If you hear the switching power supply "ticking", that's the first place you look. Instead of going through this whole mess of wiring up a new supply, you could have fixed it with $3 worth of quality caps installed in the supply.

    • @ElementalMaker
      @ElementalMaker  3 года назад

      I didn't think it could have been that easy lol. I think I still have the board so I may have to give it a shot and see if a new output cap fixes it.

    • @MrDmbright65
      @MrDmbright65 3 года назад

      @@ElementalMaker Yep, it's THAT easy...lol....if you hear a ticking sound coming from the switching power supply and you see the caps are bulging remove, replace and done. The cap is essentially shorting out as it tries to charge up. Everything else on the supply seems to hold up just fine....a few more cents spent on better caps would prevent the problem in the first place.

      I’ve been having the same problem, turn it on and the relay continuously clicks, and I can hear a sizzling sound coming from the Switching power supply, the top of the cap on the output is a little bulged, I’d appreciate a reply about what I should try replacing and what the sizzling noise might be from (I don’t see any corrosion or anything got hot or loose)

    Get yourself some of the acrylic based glue sticks. They require a "high" temp glue gun, and I've never seen them in the mini form factor... but they provide much better adhesion and tolerate a wider temperature range without failing.
    You can also get the tan colored industrial grade sticks, they are even better. Unfortunately, I was gifted my supply of them as a large handful of loose sticks, so I have no idea what term(s) are typically used to refer to this type, but perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can chime in.

    Dead caps cause the tick and high esr on the output, or in the feedback circuit, cause the power supply not to regulate. Could be just that output cap, but if one is gone chances are the others aren't far away either. A decent proportion, if not most, don't show any outward sign of failure when their esr goes high.
    That one cap may just be filtering but it also forms part of the feedback loop, it's failure will cause the smps to fail.
