Did you see Gerald Moore in the audience? At the beginning when the performers came on stage and audience was applauding. Great performance. A tribute to the great composer. They all complimented him.
Best composition on the genre ever. A masterpiece beyond any human definition that lead to us to a unexplained world of dreams and colour, a point without dimensions and time, all this through a work leaded with perfect musical continuity and lyrism. Beethoven is the greatest artist ever.
merci pour ces images de ces merveilleux collegues comme le dit MENUHIN! Du fond de l'ame merci NATALIA!!!!! avec tout mon amour pour cette musique!!!!
This is soo different interpretatively to the Feurmann, or Casals era recordings. Here they make more tempo changes, romantic gestures and make some passages sound almost atonal. Very modern.
Thank you so much for sharing this precious, timeless jewel. What a priviledge (especially in this crazy superficial time we live in) to be able to enjoy a monument of the classic repertoire performed by these three greats. Doesn't get much better than this!!
I'm fortunate to have attended, on separate occasions, Menuhin and Mstilav, once cello, later conducting. Hope humanity will find much needed inspiration.
The andante cantabile is the portal to Late Beethoven. When it came it came from another world - and music would never be the same again. In it Beethoven deploys extended passages that resound as confessions of the soul and then disappear back into the music as happens in one's life, often without forethought or reason but as epiphanies. Here the andante is reverently rendered by all three masters. As for music history, this is one of You Tube's gifts to the world in my view.
beautiful rendition by three giants of classical music (those who dislike them are not aware of history, taking place just before your eyes and ears.) What a way to enter for a cellist, throwing over your chair and not even bother to tune, bravo
Thank you very much to Natalia for posting this exceptional gem, a real 24 karat gold trio, both the work: greatest composer of all time BEETHOVEN and his superb Archduke trio, and in the other hand these three gigantic players: WILHELMINA KEMPF at the piano, YEHUDI MENUHIN at the violin and MTSLAV ROSTROPOVICH at the cello. This is simply ...... SOMETHING ELSE!
My father was financial officer of a university and there met and became friends with Maestro Rostropovich. He said he was very friendly and liked to talk. It is strange because in this trio the piano part is the only part that (to my ears) sounds "Beethoven", almost like a sonata for piano accompanied by violin and cello.
Do you think cello and violin sounded like Brahms? Since I once had a concert for this followed by Brahms piano trio No. 3 matching the same mood seamlessly.
What a treasure this is. Three great inspirational musicians playing live and one of my favourite works by Beethoven to boot. A big thank you to Natalia for rescuing this gem for posterity

Sublime! Like an intimate conversation being had between three close friends. The heartbreaking pathos and beauty of the 3rd movement are almost too much to bear. Thank you for sharing this priceless video!
I've been studying classical music over 50 years. During that time I've heard three great musicologists, including Carl Haas, say that the Archduke is one of the beautiful works ever composed.
Apparently, the first performance (with a nearly deaf Beethoven at the piano) was a disaster. He simply ploughed through it, not being able to hear what the others were doing. Thank God we have performances like this!
Evidently, Beethoven heard the reviews. The two inaugural performances of the "Archduke" were the last occasions on which he performed as a pianist in front of an audience.
Good morning. Would you, please, be kind enough to let us know what kind oƒ piano music works (at least a ƒew) you usually play yourselƒ, to help us understand your judgement in ƒull depth ?
It is hard listening to/ watching this and not getting tear in eyes. Knowing this was written by a friend for a friend, both of them extra-ordinary. The music is full of energy, yet dramatic, filled with yearning and depth of a solemn solitude . It is not Blue Danube or 4-Seasons. It reflects Vienna's cold winters when a great character would sit in a shabby house to write the greatest music of his time, "painting" with his notes, not knowing 220 years latter, far after he is gone, it is still great. What was he thinking, how was he feeling when he was scribbling his notes one after another, "his way"? That is always my greatest question. I think Rostropovich and the trio are just asking that same question as they perform those notes.

What a trio, the work and the artists, that lives in the playing ... a remarkable video. thank you for sharing
