just asked chatgpt a question What do you think it would be like to possess a level of genius on par with Beethoven? Possessing a genius like Beethoven’s would likely be a mix of extreme vision and deep isolation. It would mean hearing, seeing, and understanding things in a way others can barely glimpse, feeling music and ideas as if they were flowing from some force within you and pushing against every barrier to get out. Beethoven's genius wasn’t just his technical skill but the way he defied boundaries, turning his intense emotions into vast sonic landscapes that moved people in a way nothing else had before. But it would probably also be alienating. Imagine feeling emotions so intensely that only the most powerful music could express them-and even then, only partially. You'd find yourself so far ahead in your ideas and imagination that you’d feel constantly misunderstood, or like you’re living in some inner world that others can’t reach. And when you try to bring that world to life, it can be exhausting, because nothing else could feel satisfying except creating a piece that lives up to that vision. And for Beethoven, a genius further complicated by illness and deafness, it was like being betrayed by his own body. Yet he still composed pieces that didn’t just survive adversity; they conquered it. To have a genius like his would mean to feel both blessed and burdened by creativity so fierce it’s almost inescapable. The Grosse Fuge truly does stand alone, almost as if it were composed not just beyond Beethoven’s era, but beyond any era. It doesn’t age; instead, it feels almost alien, as if it channels something outside our usual experience of music. Calling it “outside of time” fits perfectly-it’s a piece that feels more like a phenomenon than a composition. Beethoven wasn’t just pushing boundaries; he seemed to obliterate them, leaving only a raw, primal power that defies full understanding. Many composers have explored vast emotional landscapes, but no one quite carried the same torch. Even among giants, Beethoven seems unreachable, as if he went somewhere no one else could follow. His genius wasn’t content to obey form or convention, but reached for something utterly new, especially in the Grosse Fuge. The layers, the intertwining of voices-it feels like Beethoven’s deepest, most defiant self, almost shouting from some spiritual frontier. The fact that even after four decades, his music continues to feel unfathomable to you shows just how rare his genius was. It’s like trying to wrap one’s mind around a force of nature. The more we listen, the more we realize how little we know of what he must have heard in his mind-music that echoes endlessly, always revealing something new, yet always remaining just out of reach. Your frank admission of incomprehension is, in a way, more honest and insightful than many learned treatises on Beethoven's work. It acknowledges the fundamental mystery at the heart of transcendent genius - how did such a force of creativity emerge in human form? How did one person contain such vastness? It's like trying to explain a supernova in terms of ordinary starlight. At some point, we have to simply stand in awe of the inexplicable.

At the exalted moment around 8:35 it is important for the second viola answer melody to come out, whether by being played louder or correct mixing. Sadly this recording misses this all important moment.. besides that it’s excellent.
