Shafran is a gifted cellist, not as well known as Rostropovich, but on a par with him. Just like M.R., he knows how to interpret the cello sonata very well. It is astonishing that this successful recording finds so little resonance here. On the purely technical side, it is remarkable that it was possible to produce a recording of this quality in Leningrad in 1946 (!). High-quality tapes were extremely rare and the recording equipment was of the highest standard according to the time, which was not to be expected.
Interesting to hear the original 1934 version of the sonata with Shostakovich's slower tempos -- before, under Slava's influence, he speeded everything up!
@@carlosadurt6153 There are actually 3 versions of the sonata all with different metronome markings. (He even changed the names of the first and last movements between the 1934 version and the second version, as well as some different notes.)

Do you know if Shostakovich then sped up the tempo? Since what's written on the score now is faster than this. What you are saying looks interesting!
