My son talks to me to an extent about that part of his life, because we've always had open communication. I taught him about consent coming from both parties, ENTHUSIASTIC CONSENT being key, (talking about what that meant was.. a bit uncomfy, but SUPER IMPORTANT, for him AND his love interests.), and how to go about that safely. I talked to him about what makes an unhealthy relationship and how to clock red flags, I talked to him about being a good partner physically and mentally and beyond.
I'm the person he calls when he has questions, or is struggling. I'm the person he calls to talk about relationships. I mean.. he talks to his friends as well about this stuff. I fostered the idea of healthy friendships early in life, I wanted him to feel like he had people outside of the home that he could trust and talk to, and he has a really good friend group. The fact that he trusts me so much.. I feel honored, not entitled to it.
I hope more parents realize that that's the kind of relationship you can have with your kid if you are open, honest, and respect their bodily autonomy. If you make them feel like they have to hide everything from you, then that's what they'll do.
He's almost 20, and I would never in my wildest dreams expect him to do something with his own body because I wanted that. Other than respecting the body he's in by having healthy boundaries with people, and respecting what his body needs to be healthy. But that's what you should want for anyone you care about.. and has nothing to do with controlling them. You should be teaching your kids how to respect themselves and make the best choices for their own body and life.

He would do anything to keep us safe, he saved us all from a guy who was going to "delete" us, our whole family (RUclips doesn't allow me to use that normal word) . I'm a self proclaimed daddy's girl. You know how we bond? Drive for hours in silence, commiserate about the piss poor construction on my house(recent thing), baking or cooking together and sharing stories about Nana(his mum), watching horror movies or anime together. Because in HS he worked nights and so we'd watch something together every morning before I went to school. He'd stay up 'late' and I'd wake up early. The fact that people call virginity “purity/being pure” has always irked me. Even if someone is a person of faith, seeing s^x as something that demotes you, demoralizes, dirties, unpurifies, or destroys you in any way is such a sad way to view life. I agree with not having s^x with a bunch of people and trying not to hookup and waiting for someone you love, but don’t withhold s^x from YOURSELF. If you feel like you want to have s^x or generally, be intimate with another person (what I mean by that is non-penetrative intercourse, 4play, or just physical contact), then go ahead and do it! Connecting “purity” to being perfect or good feels not only racist in some contexts, it also feels really discriminatory against people who want to live their lives the way they want. And my parents don’t deserve to know about my sex life! If I have sex, I don’t want to tell them cuz that is WEIRD. If they do, they don’t tell me cuz that is WEIRD. There is nothing wrong with my family for having boundaries! My mom knows I don’t want to talk about everything to her, she hates certain movies and songs because she associates them with her ABUSIVE ex-husband, I don’t really talk to my dad about his dad or mom because they LOWKEY HIGHKEY abused him. I remember at some point my parents gave me a purity ring but didn't explain what it was to me, so I wore it thinking it was simply a special gift. That same year, I went to a Bible camp and was horribly abused by most of the adults there, but one girl around my age was so kind to me that I felt the need to thank her somehow because she was the only person who treated me like a human being. I didn't have much to give her, but I decided to write her a little note and give her my ring as a sign of how much I appreciated her empathy and kindness. She lived out of the country and was visiting to attend the camp, so I wanted her to remember me when she left to go back home... Once my parents found out what I'd done, they were LIVID. They didn't care that I'd been abused, isolated, left in the woods to die by christian camp counselors, all they cared about was me giving away that ring. I couldn't understand why they were so upset until they explained to me what the ring symbolized and, even then, I immediately felt guilty because I'd survived CSA but had never told them so I was never "pure" to begin with. It was a miserable situation all around.

I hate the idea of "purity." That's not purity, that's unnecessary and extremely inappropriate control. A woman's worth is more than her "purity." Even so, you should not be controlling your adult daughters sex life. You should not even be thinking about your adult children's sex life. It's none of your business. I had a sister in law who I lived with for about two years. She bought me a purity ring for my 17th birthday and forced the idea of religion and "purity" onto me. She shamed me for having a boyfriend and punished me for it regularly. I felt so disgusting and ashamed, and I hated my body and my sexuality for years. She hurt me so much because of all of that. I wish she would have taught me boundaries and responsibility with potential partners because figuring out dating and relationships and physical intimacy in my early 20s was really difficult, and I had to figure it all out the hard way. Repressing sexuality does more harm than good. Thank you for reading through my little anecdote/rant.
I had the absolute best Dad any girl would've loved to have. We were extremely close, and I could always talk/confide in him and always reliable with the best advice for ME, not HIM. When I was a teen I took part in a purity ceremony at church. My dad and uncle were pastors and they encouraged it and I didn’t want to let them down. At the time my dad was my hero (My dad and I are still close) however the whole thing shaped me in to a person that has a lot of guilt and fear around anything sexual. I can still vividly see the flower they used as a symbol of my sexuality as they plucked petals off and offered it to people asking who would want a flower with no petals?
After years of therapy and a partner who is extremely patient and supportive I’ve been able to grow through it and see that I’m more than what I can give another person. Purity culture is so much more than a ring and a promise to stay celibate. It’s a way to make people feel less than. It is the constant reminder that you are nothing but a wife and mother (yes men also participate in purity culture but in my church it was more put on the women than men). My heart still hurts sometimes because I feel as though I let everyone down and that I am what they said a flower without petals. It sounds pathetic and dramatic but when you are brought up in that and it’s all you know you feel a little lost once it’s gone. Idk those are just my yappy thoughts for yappers vill 😂

I think the whole concept of virginity (outside of medical terms ofc) is bullcrap. It's just a way of shaming people (mostly women) for doing something that's completely natural and normal to do. And parents jumping onto that train and caring way too much about their kids love lives, especially when the kid is grown, are just plain creepy and invasive. I know if my dad did that, that would end in a huge argument, because nobody ain't telling me what to do with my own body, especially not him. And the whole purity ring concept is bizzare to me. So purity rings were actually encouraged in my childhood church and it was considered normal and holy etc It wasn't like a super official thing or anything but I am now FULLY AWARE THAT WE WERE IN A CULT. Because other churches didn't have shaming/shunning rooms where they stuck teen moms and single mothers so the congregation wouldn't have to "sit among their sin". They also taught us that if you're being harmed in any way you can only take it to the church and going to the cops or pressing charges was seen as an act of faithlessmess because you were meant to rely on God for justice. They taught a lot of like.... brutal tactics and we had strict dress codes and stuff. Like. I grew up thinking all churches were like that and then I got in trouble for telling everyone that only a select number of people got into heaven and then graphically describing how people of faith who were halfhearted in their worship would rot trapped on earth because they couldn't get into the Kingdom of God because they simply weren't zealous enough. I feel like I was a really scary kid. I'm doing a LOT better now but everyone is EXTREMELY CORRECT in being uncomfortable with this.
