As long as you're shooting and you're happy, love it! Thanks so much for this and again showing how it is indeed possible to maintain a calm space while filming, even if the battery is running out
I just viewed a 45 minute review and it felt as a quick 15 minute one. This is something extraordinary. I'm mesmerized how Philip Bloom wraps every review into a nice documentary. Even I, who makes short movies for myself, considering the Blackmagic camera just to get the dynamic range. I think what The Blackmagic camera achieves is the shift of perseption where the DSLR and (home) movie making will go in 5-8 years time.
One of the best reviewers I have seen in a long while, all the reviews are pact with useful information, but the best is that your visuals are always top notch.. I love your work and glad I found your channel!
Philip, I love your reviews. As a budding filmmaker I'm always looking to learn more about digital cameras and how to use them so I've learned a lot from your reviews. Thanks.
Fantastic comprehensive review! I would much rather spend 45mins watching this and learn everything I need to know than spend hours trudging the internet for incomplete information. Thank you!
Lovely review as always. I shoot aerial stuff with it. Even though it's heavy, the RAW is very useful. I like that as a newer photographer it's taught me a lot. Mainly that each camera is different, and i've pleasantly enjoyed learning to work with the camera and getting good results.
Fantastic review! A pleasure to watch as always. One thing I wish you'd cover in the future is how well the camera's 2.5K video survives cropping to 1080 under ideal (and maybe not so ideal) conditions. I've never been comfortable cropping 1080p video for SD presentations and I wonder if RAW output can solve this problem.
Simply the most amazing review I have ever seen --of anything!! I completely understood everything you were talking about and your samples were spot on. Thank you so much for this contribution!!
This was a really great review; I like how you address both the pros and cons. There are certainly a lot of quirks with this camera, but once you workaround them, it really is a game changer.
This introductory video is amazing! Just the necessary information about the camera. I haven't used the camera myself, but i think this video covered everything i wanted and needed to know!
Thank you Philip for your excellent videos. because of your review I buy my first camera from blackmagic design, a cinema camera 2.5. now i order the Ursa mini 4.6. thanks for your good work again!
@26:23 "If you're out shooting just for fun, just getting some shots of images of anything that you want, don't listen to anybody saying 'oh, that's no good, you've got no story" or anything like that. As long as you are shooting and you are happy, who cares?" - Love this. Great exhaustive review Philip.
Definitely! Probably, we are also two of the very few people who can watch a 45 minutes long video and feel like it was 3 minutes long, just because of our excitement in seeing such equipment.
Excellent review Phillip, very fair and unbiased. I unfortunately find the crop factor very unappealing, it seems the crop factor really puts the lenses to the test. Even though there's supposed to be 2.5K resolution it still looks soft. You'll need at least some Leicas, or CP.2's to make this look good, DSLR lenses don't cut it. Not many of your shots were moving but it seemed there was a lot of aliasing, did they bypass the OLPF?
Thank you for this very interesting review!!! I want to take the step to more professional camerawork now! And maybe this camera is the one. Great inspiration!
Thanks Philip Great video, I really enjoyed watching it and it answered for most of my questions about this camera. Also greetings from Finland! I really didn't expect a guy from my school to be on this video!
i have no idea. Specs mean nothing. Both this and the pocket cam on paper are great...in practice...not so. Always a wait and see. When you read about a movie and get excited are you ever let down by the end film?
You know of course you are one of the best - I watch all of your Sony reviews...cat videos etc :D - but THIS was the first video I saw you in and I knew that this reviewer is something special - these boat shots ...wow they impressed me not only back then. BTW I bought the camera for because of your review and your great shots. ...And in the end these camera - for the better and for the worde teached me how to film.
I'm very impressed with the output of the Black Magic, I've had one for a few weeks, my rig is up now. Learning DaVinci Resolve now. Battery issue is simple to fix, add a big external battery. Doh! Getting lenses, filters for the matte box, it looks great.
Hey Phillip... Any chance of a Blackmagic Production Camera Review/comparison in your experience. I'm eagerly awaiting the new Ursa mini 4.6k but have a 4k BMPC and I'm really interested in your thoughts
Brilliant review Phillip. Not only is the BMD CC a great camera for my needs, but that C300 you shot this on looks excellent! Thanks again for the in depth review! Cheers~ !!! Kev
@Curtis Bull I would say no Curtis. This would be the absolute worst camera for your type of work. The data you would accumulate would be mind blowing.
Loads and loads of good info Philip! But the best peace of info for me was Dungeness, I come to Ashford very frequently and always end up on the side of Dover whilst there's a really wonderful sea world down south to explore. Can't wait to be there in a few weeks time. Load up the car with my Canons, tripods and slider (alas no Philip Bloom ;) ) and enjoy the Indian summer views. Thanks for sharing this wonderful gem!
Hi Philip, I was waiting for the 4k but it looks like it ain't coming anytime soon. Do you think I should get the 2.5k ef? I have about 5 ef / ef-s lenses. I'm concerned about what you said about the camera using only the centre of the lens (in MFT video). Advice really appreciated.
Finaly somebody who can trully make a good review where you got something on. I was looking for a BM, but now i seen this report i will reconsider what to do. I need something good with broadcast quality, but find the colors from the BM so flats, and the battery life is also a big miner for me because you cant hang something from Bauer on the back of the camera. I must conves that my last camera i holded was a sony betacam sp...25 years ago. So now i must find out what now got a decent enough quality.
Great review Phillip. Thank you! I shoot music videos and commercials but without the option of high framerate filming abilities, this camera us useless to me. Has blackmagic announced the release of such options in the future? The market demands that and they should do it IMHO.
Hay Philip, thanks for your effort and this great extensive review of the Blackmagic. Anyway I'm not sure which camera i should buy... the Blackmagic cinema camera or the Canon 5d mark iii. Currently i use the 600d with the 50mm 1.4 and the 18-55kit for some little low budget selfmade films... For both cameras there are some important pros and cons. Unfortunately I'm not able to decide between them. Which one would you recommend for little low budget production? Greetings from Germany
Great. Thank you for this. You gave me a way to weigh my options on a big shoot I am planning. And yes, you are right a full 35mm sensor would be the deal MAKER, in the context of other cameras out there right now. Higher frame rates for SloMo would be amazing also, of course, even if it would up the price tag a bit. Maybe it's time for an Über-Version of the BMCC! Again, thank you for this thorough review!
This is gonna be my first video camera. I'd been saving up a lot for a mark III, but I think I'll go for this one instead. I have no lenses of any brand or mount, so I'm gonna start with the MFT version and build up from there. Do you think this is the right choise?
Saw you mention using a 24mm Samyang, glad to know that it can keep up with a camera like the BMCC. I hear such great things about those lenses for their price, I really need to grab one to try for myself.
I guess that was directed to cuddles. Anyway thanks to Philip for another indepth review. As a Finland based cgi and post-production freelancer now moving away from rental videography equipment these have been the most helpful.
I just bought for $500 BMCC +Speedbooster + 1Tb SSD. Nice combo to my BMPCC 4k, end even better than BMPCC4k, colors on BMCC more pleasure for my eyes.
Benefit of having MFT mount is that it's easier to get appropriately wide lenses built especially for this sensor size, whereas Canon mount has an innapropriate range of lenses intended for larger sensors. 50mm lens on a full frame 5d mII provides what is considered a normal field of view for that sized sensor, but would appear really 'zoomed in' if you chucked that lens on the BMC, which has a smaller sensor.
whats your thoughts on the recently announced Blackmagic pocket camera..and how is to going to affect the 'DSLR filmmaking'...i know we cant be right without using the camera but still id like to hear your opinion
Thanks for the evaluation of the BMCC. I was on the verge of buying one, but knowing I needed to upgrade my computer then made this a $7500 purchase in effect. With the accessories mentioned you could say $10,000. What was a concern was the shortfalls pointed out and the user issues in actual filming. So I think I will wait maybe 12 months and in the meantime look at a second 7D with perhaps something out there like a Go Pro 3 to give me an edgy look. I love watching your stuff, well done Phil
Could anyone point out what exactly the Product is he shows at 13:05? I looked through the Zacuto shop, but I wasn't able to find it, as their shop is pretty unwieldy. I'd like to have something Similar, So knowing what these kinds of rigs are called would be awesome.
How come the company did not hire you as an advisor before they brought it to market. The battery situation, not able to see F-stops or available media storage left on the card is crazy. I hope the battery issue will be changed soon. Nice review.
The ultimate goal for photographers is being able to shoot with video and pull RAW images off that video. With photography much of your shots come from hitting that button at the right time which in a large percentage is luck ... with spatterings of good planning. Video captures every moment.
Love your stuff Mr Bloom. Just sat and watched the whole 45:55, which is pretty rare in the world of on-line video, and its a Saturday night! Thanks for spending the time to do these types of in-depth reviews. Got to ask, what's with the 70-200 F4L doing hanging in the top right of the frame on the mid shots?
Fantastic review! Really comprehensive! Quick question- if the mount on the MFT version is passive you would need an adaptor for most lenses to adjust the iris, most of these seem to increase the crop factor to a similar amount as the EF version. So is there a way around the small sensor size? Thanks for the review- it's really helpful! :-)
Thanks for the review. I love your work! Been looking for a good cinema quality camera for independent films and was curious how well it performed. Great price for the camera body but sounds like post could be very expensive without a new Mac and hard drives. Keep up the great work. You are very inspiring!
Phillip, Im new into the market and am aiming to spend around 400-800 pound on a camera. Originally I was going to go for something like a 60d, but the pocket blackmagic cinema camera caught my eye. Im going to be shooting a mixture of scripted acting and documentarys, what do you think?

There's several video samples out there with absolutely amazing image quality from the RX1. The RUclips user darwinfish105 has several samples that are worth checking out even for a guy like you. It lacks the prores and raw file formats as you might know but I have yet to see better video image quality
I did a review of bmpcc, bmcc, amd bmpc cameras and their are truly fantastic cameras! Good work Philip!
Faymusmedia Which one is best for shooting so it looks like an actual film?
As long as you're shooting and you're happy, love it! Thanks so much for this and again showing how it is indeed possible to maintain a calm space while filming, even if the battery is running out
if there is no battery left in your camera due to how stupid is made how you an enjoy filming anything? 🤔
This is golden information, even today
I know this review is over a year old, but it's the most thorough of them all. I'm hoping to get my first BMCC in a few months for VFX/documentaries.
this is probably one of the most accurate reviews i have seen in the last two years. Well done!
I just viewed a 45 minute review and it felt as a quick 15 minute one. This is something extraordinary. I'm mesmerized how Philip Bloom wraps every review into a nice documentary. Digging through all your old videos… super cool to see how your shooting and editing has changed over the years. A lovely review as well, of course :)
Fantastic comprehensive review! I would much rather spend 45mins watching this and learn everything I need to know than spend hours trudging the internet for incomplete information. Thank you!

four years...damn time runs. I can remember watching your review being blown away by the camera
This introductory video is amazing! Just the necessary information about the camera. I haven't used the camera myself, but i think this video covered everything i wanted and needed to know!
If you just used 1:11 as the thumbnail, countless millions will come!
Kittens.
Thank you Philip for your excellent videos. because of your review I buy my first camera from blackmagic design, a cinema camera 2.5. now i order the Ursa mini 4.6. thanks for your good work again!
there always is this nice and cozy atmosphere in your videos.
as always, the music fits PERFECTLY!
very informative, good round-up!
@26:23 "If you're out shooting just for fun, just getting some shots of images of anything that you want, don't listen to anybody saying 'oh, that's no good, you've got no story" or anything like that. thanks!
all music is always detailed in the end credits!
yep the 8-16mm...check out my mini doc called ponte tower here and the blog post on it on my site where i talk about the lens
so... it's 2016 What do you think of it now? :)
simon gentry its 2018 now! What do you think
Still amazing within the price range and compared to cameras in the 5K+ range.
Definitely! Probably, we are also two of the very few people who can watch a 45 minutes long video and feel like it was 3 minutes long, just because of our excitement in seeing such equipment.

Yet another great review. It's more camera than I need but it's good to know what's happening in the industry.
Thank you for a great review. You answered one of the main questions which was for VFX work with the RAW files.
really kind comment adrian thanks!
Thank you for this very interesting review!!! I want to take the step to more professional camerawork now! And maybe this camera is the one. Great inspiration!
Mr. Bloom, thank you for the knowledge as usual. What a fun little piece of technology
I seriously appretiate the AMAZING visuals of the review. Really sets you apart!
Thanks Philip Great video, I really enjoyed watching it and it answered for most of my questions about this camera. Also greetings from Finland! I really didn't expect a guy from my school to be on this video!
it is annoying for camera mounting and the data is huge, but I love the color and the control you get in post
Man Philip, I understand why you say it's a crap camera, but you sure got some beautiful shots with it. You have a hell of an eye for great shots.
i have no idea. Specs mean nothing. Both this and the pocket cam on paper are great...in practice...not so. Always a wait and see.
When you read about a movie and get excited are you ever let down by the end film?
I can't wait for the review of the two new blackmagic cameras. I am strongly considering getting the pocket blackmagic camera.
What is that light fixture behind you? Is that a lens converted into a light fixture? Where can I get one? Great video review!
The camera is one thing but the operator is another and that's something priceless...crazy visuals as usual..
Brilliantly done, Sir. Gives a good idea of what I may be able to expect should I obtain one of these cameras.
Thank you so much for making this. Incredibly well done.
You know of course you are one of the best - I watch all of your Sony reviews...cat videos etc :D - but THIS was the first video I saw you in and I knew that this reviewer is something special - these boat shots ...wow they impressed me not only back then. The best review video I've seen on this camera!
The details of the shot are very impressing! thanks for reviewing
i wish i could keep liking this video over and over again,Great review Philip thanks a lot keep it coming!!!
great work sir, thank you. I have the s35 sensor 4k version and am just
learning the camera and workflow.
have you shot the ursa mini 4.6k yet??
Loads and loads of good info Philip! Now, this is what I call a review. Thank you Philip, this was very helpful and very well done.

No Isaac. Not out. Just announced. Should have been released by now. Not a sign of it.
Thanks for this review! Was looking into purchasing this camera but I wanted to know what to expect.

@SuperGeekTime raw footage by its very nature can't not be graded.
Hay Philip, thanks for your effort and this great extensive review of the Blackmagic.

Greetings from Germany
Phillip Bloom, Thank You for this review.
I just bought this thing! Thanks for overview) Prores looks awesome!
I would definitely buy (or not buy) a camera on the basis of a single Philip Bloom review, no matter his admonishment not to do that : ) Well done!
Phil, you have got to get your hands on the new 4k version- would love to hear your opinion on it!
Philip, I like your style of shooting, even how you hold the camera. So what is your doc camera in 2020?
Always check a video's description before asking a question! :)
@SquirrelFromGradLife I have one and tested it against other cameras and its not great. Just my opinion. Amazing stills though
So excited that premiere is running in the back ground.
This is gonna be my first video camera. I'd been saving up a lot for a mark III, but I think I'll go for this one instead. I have no lenses of any brand or mount, so I'm gonna start with the MFT version and build up from there. Do you think this is the right choise?

How do you think the 5d3 will fair now with the rumor of Uncompressed out firmware update? Is this going to be a game changer for it? Thanks.
I guess that was directed to cuddles. Anyway thanks to Philip for another indepth review.
As a Finland based cgi and post-production freelancer now moving away from rental videography equipment these have been the most helpful.
a young film maker dream keep up the good work.
I cant believe this thing is already down to $700 or so(as of Dec of 2019)
I was just wondering about that, thanks for sharing!
just bought one in brazil for 400usd
@@viniciusgalavernamus Lucky you! Hope you make great content with it and it lasts for as long as possible.
I just bought for $500 BMCC +Speedbooster + 1Tb SSD. Nice combo to my BMPCC 4k, end even better than BMPCC4k, colors on BMCC more pleasure for my eyes.
I was wondering if this camera would good for house of worship? Any suggestion.

then why would they sell it if it seems like a prototype?
that was an amazing review though
well its no longer a Canon mount so trying to put them on without an adaptor would be rather challenging!! :)
whats your thoughts on the recently announced Blackmagic pocket camera..and how is to going to affect the 'DSLR filmmaking'...i know we cant be right without using the camera but still id like to hear your opinion
Now that you asked this question 7 years ago, what's your thoughts on the Pocket 6k pro? lol
i am from Recife in Brazil south america and i loved this review kudos to you phil.
Great Video Phillip! Thanks for doing all the work, now I just need to get one and try it out!
Thanks Philip.... A LOT for this. A marvellous review. Very long but very interesting indeed.... i watched it all :-) Thanks again.
Yossy
which compatison?
where?
How come the company did not hire you as an advisor before they brought it to market. The battery situation, not able to see F-stops or available media storage left on the card is crazy. I hope the battery issue will be changed soon. Nice review.
Oh btw, i intend on purchasing the bmcc 2.5k MFT... so does this jump include this version?
The ultimate goal for photographers is being able to shoot with video and pull RAW images off that video. With photography much of your shots come from hitting that button at the right time which in a large percentage is luck ... with spatterings of good planning. Video captures every moment.
Love your stuff Mr Bloom. Just sat and watched the whole 45:55, which is pretty rare in the world of on-line video, and its a Saturday night! Thanks for spending the time to do these types of in-depth reviews. Got to ask, what's with the 70-200 F4L doing hanging in the top right of the frame on the mid shots?
What was use to shoot this tutorial? Good images to.
You are very inspiring!
do the same video with red scarlet dragon please
I watched both this and the GH4 video review... Which is the way to go in your opinion? Thank you
You're awesome.
Great touch of humour in your videos, and you brilliantly guide a person through.
Thankyou :D
Phillip, Im new into the market and am aiming to spend around 400-800 pound on a camera. Originally I was going to go for something like a 60d, but the pocket blackmagic cinema camera caught my eye. Im going to be shooting a mixture of scripted acting and documentarys, what do you think?
What a thorough review!!! Thanks Philip!!
Are you talking about the Sony RX1 or RX100? The RX1 is full frame and the video samples I have seen are absolutely amazing with a dynamic range I have never ever seen from a prosumer camera. There's several video samples out there with absolutely amazing image quality from the RX1. The RUclips user darwinfish105 has several samples that are worth checking out even for a guy like you. It lacks the prores and raw file formats as you might know but I have yet to see better video image quality
Very good review the making of is great also ¡¡¡ Canon C300?
