The audience laughed when he talked about the skin telling the truth even though the person wants to hide it. But it is not so funny when you consider a medical exam where your body tells the truth about you smoking or eating too much suger, even when you want to hide it from your physician.

Great lecture Gary. There are a few parts that need further clarifications such as the misogyny, but overall you did a great job in trying the educate these people with the facts that:
1) There are bad people in every belief.
2) Not everyone who claims to be a Muslim truly understand the teaching of the Quran
3) If you want the learn about the true teaching of Islam, read the Quran.
4) Do not think that the acts of a person who claims to be a Muslim is the true teaching of Islam (refer point 1)
5) Trying to learn about Islam by just observing how a person who claims to be a Muslim behaves is a bad idea (again, refer point 1)
5) The laws of Saudi Arabia are the laws of Saudi Arabia, and not necessarily the laws of Islam.

*TWO CORRECTIONS:*
1) Unlike the Bible, there is only one version of the Quran... again, many translations, but only one version.
2) Saddam Hussein was NOT a Sunni Muslim, he was a secular leader/dictator... again, he (Saddam) was not governing by the Quran or Sunnism.

Well, recent research says it's closer to 31 versions with around 55 000 differences between them. And the current version that is mostly used is canonised in 1924.

Correction of order of the Qur'an.
The companions did know the order of how it was supposed to be compiled because the prophet had already taught them which chapter/verse comes after which.
It wasn't compiled haphazardly.

It was under the Angel Gabriel instructions that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) put together the Qur'an and arranged it on how it is today. With our technology now a days a special mathematical codes were discovered in the Qur'an that every letter in it's right place....one of our today's Qur'an's Miracles
Many mistakes but at least he did a far better job than most secular non-Muslims and kinda got a lot of the main ideas so not bad. Good for him to have looked and read with more of an open mind

It is relieving that a great writer is unveiling the truth about the Holly Quran. However, Mr. Gary Wills must search further to find out the real wisdom beyond some of those "flaws" that he said exists in the Quran. For example, the reason that God said two women are equivalent to one man as witness in court of law is because women, as mothers, are compassionate in nature and may refrain from testifying against someone, therefore, two women should testify for the purpose of justice.
This guy with his little effort in trying to read and understand Islam, is doing big huge favor to those old stubborn people around him... May Allah be in his guidance and their guidance. I know it's hard job because I dealed with old people who bounce between thinking they were living perfect according to what they were taught to believe.and how they feel something was wrong in what they spent their life believing...
I believe more you walk to the truth, you will find a help to get it...more you satisfy yourself with cursing Islam, more you block your guidance!

I think the idea of Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic as the three of God revelations is not correct it should be Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic because Jesus Christ spoke Aramaic and not Greek!
Correct about Jesus speaking Aramaic, but he knew Greek, as most people did. The Christian scriptures were written in Greek, the real language of the Roman Empire.
Of course - Jesus was a black man from the tribe of Judah not an european - duh!

Require more study in depth . At end you will find its same message given to all starting from Ibrahim to Mohamnad (peace be upon all) at different times . God cannot change his words . It's the followers who keep changing to run religious shops .

Khalid J.Yusuf Exactly. There is no question of plagarism (since some accused Muhammad pbuh copied the bible) because quran and bible (or to be accurate injil, torah & zabur) were from the same "author" i.e., Allah swt.

Mrs Wills made a good try in reading the Quran, infortunately many many things that he said were not precise and he mixed many stories with each others unintentionally + sometimes used the wrong word giving a total different meaning. But at least he tried!

Notwithstanding some of the misunderstandings of Mr. Gary Wills the lecture was quite good and apt. May Allah dispel those misunderstandings of the professor. The first step towards understanding Islam and developing good relations with the Muslim community anywhere in the world is to study the Quran and converse with them about it and ask questions in case of misconception or misunderstanding.
On the whole you are very open minded and unbiased person and we need people like you in every religion .
I'm a Muslim, and sometimes I tend to think that, unlike many common beliefs specially by the non-Muslims, Islam has given woman somewhat more favor over men. Because, in a nutshell, men bear almost all the responsibilities for their families and even relatives. But, in the end, I have complete faith that Allah is true and honest and perfect. He has to be, logically. We the creatures have different views only because we're not perfect.

...I believe, even though this man read some of the chapters of the Qur'an, he misunderstood many of them.
The story of Soloman and birds he narates incorrectly as well as calling women as witnesses and the inheritance.
He needs make more research on the exigeses of the Qur'an, please.
Quran is not matter of reading it's matter of understanding and it is a word of God (Allah) so requires wisdom and capability of understanding it.

33mins Mr Wills admits finding the Qur'an "hard to read".
The Qur'an says seek knowledge from those who have understanding.
Mr Wills failed to do that basic due diligence, so his review is full of elemental errors and pretty weak.

Not only erroneous, but alot of things he just didn't explain correctly.
When you do seek the knowledge, you find there isn't agreement in Islam either as to the meaning of Islam. You have Shia and Sunnis, Ahmadiyas, etc. Among the Sunnis you have different schools of thought(madhab) which are different interpretations or understanding of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. This leads me to believe that Allah is the author of confusion.(I actually don't think he exists except in the minds of people).

The quran is quite advanced in its views on life and how societies function and the overall theme is peace and harmony. But it is not naive about it and says you should be always prepared to repell the agressor by building up enough force to make the agressor think twice about it and if nececcary hit him hard enough to stop him. Thats how all civilised nations handle the use of force

the best way to answer all our question is to read the book first , or see a knowledgeable person . its our duty to read the quran and understand what is write and wrong today in our world that we love so much .

Life after death according to the Quran is physical and not spiritual as Gary had said. But, he contradicted himself by saying drinking wine is allowed.

The part of the talk needs more explanation on the need of two woman witness against 1 man or for that matter why man gets double what woman gets of wealth upon the death of the parents. The provision stipulates the duties of the man who gets double that needs further explanation which was not done.

@20:30 if the Qur'an had expressly banned slavery, it would have been disastrous for slaves of that time. It was kinder and wiser to encourage the freeing of existing slaves so that they can be absorbed as free men and women into wider society.
i like to compare it to the time of probation of alcohol in the USA. the authoritys just stopped it suddenly and it didnt work out for the peopole and it went underground, so the law didnt work. And they got rid of the law.

He might have owned slaves, but they were far better off than the slaves you imagine. It wasn't just "stop slavery peeps," it was more like "give em more rights gradually so society can adapt."
He is looking at it on a surface level, no depth nor dimension to his analysis .Anybody who wants to understand it in depth should listen to Hamza Yusuf who is the best scholar of Islamic teaching in the western world.
But it was memorized as a book in the lifetime of the Prophet-in the prophet’s time until today, all memorized it in exactly the same way ...word for word!!

I think that the reason woman inheritance is less may be due to the fact that the woman will eventually be married therefore receiving more from her husband and his dowry. This is just something I pondered upon this is not a fact.

The woman receives less because she is not required to work to provide for herself/family. Provision for the family is the man’s responsibility. In a truly practicing Muslim family, the mother/sister/wife/daughter is not required to work/provide for herself or family unless she wants to. Also, a muslim woman does inherit from her family and after her husband. Realistically, we do receive more than the man.
If you want to read the Qur'an without flaws then it's better to learn Arabic and read the Qur'an in its original language and not with someone's interpretation and with their limited understanding because even in arabic one will need to study the Qur'an carefully and consider the context because you can read the Qur'an without its context and God knows best

(يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلَابِيبِهِنَّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ ۗ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا)
[Surat Al-Ahzab 59]

The heaven description is not to be taken literally but rather as the highest plesure You can picture and above. Every human has his Imagination of what that would be according to his Reality
