I always felt that dichotomy of RPer/MinMaxer was kind of a trap people fall into. Even if your not calculating DPR and maximizing, you are making tactical decisions based around wanting to defeat enemies and survive.
So even if your character isnt thinking in terms of dice, canonically they are thinking about the things those mechanics are meant to represent. The terms in which you and your character use differ, but the motivation is the same... thats why i think mechanically maximized characters shoild be RPd as ambitious, hard working...
Anyway, thought this build was a great example of how a really detailed analysis of mechanics can actually create MORE role playing opportunities.
Also big fan of your channel excited to watch it growing so fast! Keep it up man!

I love the idea or role play unique concepts, but I don’t really want the rest of the party to feel like my adventurer probably should have just stayed home. I think it’s optimizing that makes it possible to play a character like this for the whole campaign.

@@100sparky001 Right - I think it important to find a happy-medium. That is... I don't think I'm *super* interested in doing a whole video on a character concept that, despite my best efforts, just doesn't really bring much to combat, whether from a control/support perspective, tank perspective, or damage - I'm sure some people enjoy playing characters like that, and there are plenty of people who are fine playing with others at their table who create characters like that - it's just not very interesting to *me.* :)

I love the idea of an optimized build within a narrative constraint. This will open up HUGE amounts of content possibilities for you. i.e. Best underwater combatant, best horde killer, best mage hunter, best BBEG hunter - vampire, krakken, demon prince, devil, Drow matron, lich, etc. The counterplay vs. different baddies give specific direction with a balance between damage types and defense/resistances.

Totall agree! I designed a "mage hunter" aka caster bounty hunter that utilizes 4 martial classes to shore up weaknesses along the way. I love playing this character and have it mapped out to lvl 20. I also built a cleric around a love of bar brawling... surprisingly effective in melee combat.

I think this is the most natural way to make a character when you care about roleplaying. Not that the opposite is wrong, but this makes more sense when you have a concept to explore.

I usually come up with a single crazy idea, moment or plan for a character. Then I try to find a way for that to make that work within the rules by picking a class (and the abilities/spells etc.)
Then I try to make a background/story for that character to make said plan likely to happen while still making a fullfledged person with needs and wants. Usually the plan changes at this moment xD
and finally I'll go in to min/max mode and pick the remaining abilities and/or spells

Sounds like a failed experimented that blue dragon and evil wizard to fuse together into a new being who lost their memories. They now pray to the god of storms, a god they are comfortable with that aligns with their element, to help them find out who they are.
I see this guy like keeping his right destructive hand in his pocket during social encounters and then switching his pocket hands as combat starts.
Oh and if you couldn’t tell I definitely liked it. Probably going to take chain lightning, lightning bolt, and fly as Sparky evolves. Would be cool to hear your character backstories for each character too.

This. THIS video aligns with my perception of optimization in D&D. Building around the pure math can be fun, but building around a concept is just better for fun, because it's the character YOU want to play. I actually did this with your bladesinger build; took the math you presented but changed things based on the concept of a tortle who had been enslaved by the drow. Sure he's not "optimized" but who wants to play an elf when dwarves and tortles and kobolds exist? No one thats who. NO ONE!

While picking up Hex at level 1 and maxing Cha at level 4 is REALLY nice, you could consider Protector Aasimar for a race for this build.
Adds a lot of damage to a combat once per long rest when you take the time to set it up, and I like the idea that this "Touch" power could come from your divine origin.

I know I'm late to the party, but just found your channel! I don't know how this would affect the overall build, but thematically, I feel like it's a gem! A single level dip in Warlock would give you access to a 1st level spell slot that comes back on a short rest, great for farming some Sorcery points, but most importantly, you'll be able to grab Hellish Rebuke! Couple this with Transmute Spell for 1 Sorcery point to lightning, upcast when you can, it'll benefit from your extra damages, and gives you a great use of your Channel Divinity to maximize the damage! It still falls within the constraints you've put in place, even further that by only using it when someone hits you with a melee attack. Keep up the awesome videos!

To be fair, I'm an optimizer also. But I love gnomes and I wanted to use one as a tank, so I built a gnome barbarian which does suprisingly well on the mental saves due to the advantages from the gnome feature.

I love building characters that way. I usually build a story and imagine what he does and how and then try to figure out what classes and race work best to make that story work. This was a fun build. I would probably let myself use spells like thunderwave and thunderstep since they all radiate from me so it's like transferring the energy to the ground and letting it spread

Love the premise! This is how I like to build my characters: come up with an interesting premise and them min/max it. Sure my folk hero wrestling champ isn't as strong as a fighter/barbarian, but he's interesting and fun to play and he's full of folksy wisdom! Great videos, keep up the good work :)

I suggest you continue illustrating optimized builds with contrived circumstances. You'd be surprised how many people will latch onto this concept because it keeps us from overshadowing our casual table. More unique builds and concepts are always appreciated.. just keep it optimized! My personal favorite contrived concept: I implore you look into the gnome/kobold/small battlesmith artificer dual wielding lances. We all know how underwhelming TWF is. But is 1d12+5x3 with the piercer feat really so bad? And if your table allows, dip mutant blood hunter (TWF, 1d4 lightning per attack), have 19 base INT (feytouched for hex or hunter's mark), enjoy 24 INT by level 20.

Neat, I like the idea of creating a character that is within a framework that is limited in a concept but still functionally optimized within the restrictions. I have a character I've been wanting to create with-in D&D. It is based on a City of Heroes character and is kind of a Shadow empath using shadowy tenticles for control while doing psychic damage. Wanting maybe a deep one or great old one warlock with aberrant mind Sorcerer. Anyway I like this kind of twisty build.

Illusionist’s Bracers from Ravnica allow you to cast the same cantrip twice using both your Action and Bonus action. Though it is rare item, it will let our character keep all our sorcery points and spell slots. I think it’s the best magic item for this build
We also could use distant spell metamagic instead of quickened (May be we could say that this is the only way how our character can deliver magic not through touching someone) and become this monk of the radiant soul style guy who is throwing shocking grasps at his enemies who are unlucky to come too close to us
Anyway, this build is amazing and seems really fun to play. Thank you!

Like many before, enjoyed this one. Liked the concept and the fact that a couple of your builds have focused on cantrips for the damage output; leaves plenty of spell slots to be more magically active in non/pre/post battle situations.

Just an interesting thought, but transmuted could possibly work for spirit shroud since you can choose cold when casting it then change it to lightning for the sorcery point if you wanted to do so, also have to agree with @shuriksokol on the bracers

If you went for fire damage, you could take celestial warlock 6 and Draconic 6. Both add charisma to fire damage. If you take Shillelagh at warlock 3, tome, and attack with green flame blade, you are adding a total of 3x charisma

I had a very similar idea before and it's on my list to play one day. One main thing I plan on doing thoigh is Divine Soul because Inflict wounds is great and access to all cleric stuff.
For metamagic I would take distant spell because then the spells with touch can have a range. Kind of a cop out slightly, but still limits me to touch spells

Really liked this one. I actually just finished a similar build but dipped into warlock instead of cleric. Only built it out to level 10, but kept the lightning theme with draconic sorcerer.
I started sorcerer and picked up crusher feat at lvl 1. Lvl 2 I went Genie warlock to add bludgeoning damage to one attack. Neat interaction with booming blade as it pushes enemy away. After that raced to sorcerer 6 for modifier damage then took 2 more levels in warlock to get pseudodragon familiar to deliver my shocking grasp and be a target for dragon breath spell. Finished off with 7th level sorcerer to get 4 level spells.
Can’t say enough how much I like optimizing these gimmicks builds. Hope to see more like this

I love this! I enjoy the usual pure mechanics builds because they are fun to think about. But having a theme and implementing it in a cool effective way is awesome and can be implemented easier at the table with a few tweaks for personal preference. Would love to see more themed builds! Given you've done quite a number of pure damage builds there's a good set of options to compare new ideas to, and even tanks etc have some comparisons (though I'd love to see more defensive builds!).
Side note: This build is obviously best if your campaign starts at higher levels imo. However while the damage of those first cleric levels is sadly pretty static, your AC and utility options go way up so they are not a waste by any means! If the campaign is going to be 1-11 or so it would definitely be worth a discussion with the DM to try and work in some magic items during those levels to make the damage feel more substantial.

I really like the self-limiting idea. I am working on a character using this idea. The backstory is a little complex but involves magical lightning hitting my character's hands. He was a tailor, so crafts gloves to keep his magic from affecting others and takes off his gloves during battle. He is part of the underground that helps protect dragons from being hunted to extinction. Thanks for the ideas!

This sounds like a great Captain America wielding Mjlonir build!
I love this character and wanted to throw a custom concepts in as well for any who wants to use it. It sounds like some sort of entity has taken up residence in the sorcerer's body and has created a sort of Symbiotic relationship with them. Keeping the host alive with spells and taking... something in return. I can see the character moving and leaving a trail of lightning behind them, an echo of their movements.
At level 7 when you get your shield, a cool V shaped metal shield would allow you to flavor a nice Jacob's Ladder between the top points, which would be cool. The cleric could be explained as a deeper connection with the entity inside of the character and using that connection to help unlock their full potential.

It would be interesting to optimize around a race, e.g. a bugbear to see what you can do with the longer reach. There are some cool options out there and it would break up the run of custom lineage.

The build would have to change quite a bit, it might also be possible to pull off a similar build using Primal Savagery as your primary cantrip. It would definitely have a different feel to it, but I think it would be really interesting to try to make it work!

I'll agree with what seems to be most in the comments and say I really do enjoy an optimized build around a specific concept like this. As to whether you do more builds like this, I'd only say I would hope you only do a build if you're truly interested in it. I've seen other concept builds that perhaps were requested by viewers and you could tell the person doing the build really wasn't that into it. What that led to was the build not receiving the same level of thought and care which meant it had pretty significant holes. Thanks for what you do!

Agreed, unfortunately optimizing builds can push some people away, but for those of us that like the numbers and the spreadsheets, it’s way better when you’re into it.
Just because it doesn’t deal intimate damage doesn’t mean it’s not interesting.

I like the idea of constrained optimization.
It could be interesting to simulate some non-optimized characters as a comparison baseline. If people are interested, I could start running some lvl 1-20 simulations for the official example characters and post it in the reddit. What say you?

The touch condition is a really tough one, seeing how incredibly few damaging touch spells there are in DnD. I think I would work with my DM to let me reflavour ranged spells as touch spells. Since this is a straightup nerv mechanically, I think most DMs will allow it and might even work with you to give you some advantage to compensate.

The only other cantrip I know of that is elemental damage and touch is primal savagery, from the druid list. It is a d10 acid instead of a d8 lightning, but idk if it's worth a sorc point to get 1 more damage on average.
