Hi Scotty, my car swerve to the left when accelerating and swerves to the right when I take my foot off the gas. It doesn't swerve when braking, and tire pressure in balanced in all of them. What should I do?
Scotty Kilmer my car slightly pull towards left when i unhold the steering, i rotated the tires from left to right and right to left. It was more towards left pulling so i placed it back to their original places. What to do now??? Moreover when i hold the steering the car moves on straight. Is this toe(alignement) or what? It is slight pulling
Scotty Kilmer how do i fix whacky wheel ? I have to hold steering wheel at an angle to go straight? Can you give me some tips to sort that one out too?
Nice Video clip! Forgive me for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Patlarny Vehicle History Principle (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome one off product for discovering how to repair your car the simple way without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my close friend Aubrey got astronomical results with it.
Scotty your the man. Car was pulling to the left. Was changing the left tire to the back and found a bubble on the inside of the tire. Had it replaced for free for the Defect. Thanks.
I told your advice by switching my tires the front to see if it was a bad tire and it end up being the tire, it no longer pulls to the right anymore,,Thanks very much for your video's you saved me a lot of money.
13 years later. This is the best video that solved all my problems and saved me a bunch of money. Thank you, Scotty. Diagnosing tire situation got a little complicated for me since my car had directional tires. I can only change front to back and back to front on the same side.
@Matthew55904 Yes, one is broken and the new one on the steering wheel works. The broken dash tach costs 600 bucks, the steering wheel one was 29 bucks at auto zone. Scotty
hello scotty! recently i had a customer request an alignment because of a pull. after only adjusting the right side toe i knew it wasnt the cause of the pull but being that it was very late in the day, this person paid and went on there way. a week later he came back. i have to thank you for this video as it served me as a simple reminder and saved me a lot of time, knowing that the alignment and tire pressure was good i simply rotated the tires free of charge. Keep up the good work scotty!
Thanks Scotty, it was one of my front tires. Now the car drives straight & handles a lot better too. Guys like you make RUclips a great place to find answers, save time & money.
MDX pulled to the right for months, have new tires, checked everything possible as mentioned. Did Scotty's recommendation, LF to RF and RF to LF (even though those tires now rotate opposite from directional arrows) MDX drives down the road straight as an arrow, thanks Scotty, you da man!!
remove the tires, clean the inside of the rims, and put then on gently at first, then retighten all the lug nuts, you could have them on slightly crooked
Wrong. If alignment solves the problem, then the Honda Odyssey that my mom drives wouldn't be pulling to the right anymore. But guess what, it still is. The only reason is that one tire doesn't spin freely. My dad replaced and aligned the tires of this van. Now that he died, I have to deal with the stress he went through. So the tire pressure, which the valves and pressure have been fixed, despite the tpms light remaining on due the receiver malfunction, which is not worth replacing, the tires itself isn't the problem, but rather the spin should be
@ryechidom have the front end checked for wear by jacking it up and pulling on the tires and looking for play. If there is none, then the tires are shot, out of ballance, or wheels bent. Scotty
if you mean the wheels drag when you try to spin them, the brakes are dragging. Bad callipers, old clogged brake rubber hoses, or bad brake master cylinders cause that.
I wasted money on alignment at dealer and they didnt tell me its tyres cus it still pulled....thanks to this video i did wht scotty said n pull is gone.thanks again.

I suspect my Silverado Z71's G80 locker in the rear has something to do with my intermittent pull to the right. It only seems to do it on rainy days. Scotty, thanks for this video! I'm having this pulling issue with my 2000 Ford Ranger, even though my shop says it's in perfect alignment. I'm going to do the checks on the tires you suggested. Can't wait to see what I find out!
Well when I put on my brake my car keeps going and all the wheel falls off then I have to walk home to get a jack to put the wheels back on then I bring the jack back home walking then I come back and get the car that's like 45 miles from home
@Matthew55904 Often the engine light will not come on, it only comes on when the computer senses a problem, and noise isn't a problem the computer can sense at all. Scotty
Hey Scotty, first of all, thanks for sharing your experience which is almost thrice as much as my age and for being such a honest and informative person. BTW my dad runs a alignment(both rod and camber), tyre repairing, wheel balancing, and general parts repair/replacement here in Oman and you won't believe the alignment we do here costs 10.39 US Dollar as the computer alignment usually costs 15.58 US Dollar and the customers from there usually come to us cuz the car still pulls to one side, he does it with a measuring rod of some sorts and checks the in/out by seeing the rear tires from the front and we also do camber alignment with cheap equipment. The shop has been running for 35 years and customers are very happy and loyal, and there are 2 people in Oman who still do it the old way, and he hasn't had uneven wear on his cars 5 years old tires. Just wanted to let you know that alignments can be cheap and work very well.
He's showing all the things you can check at home for FREE. Sure your caster can be off. (Toe out and camber really don't cause real bad pulling in general) Why pay $89.99 to have a mechanic tell you to get a new tire. Many service shops use the front end alignment as a FISHING tool to get work. Through an alignment repair shops can find need to replace Tires, ball joints, struts, strut bearings, control arm bushings, wheel bearings, rack, steering box, springs etc. If you can eliminate any bad parts before you get the alignment you will save $$$$. Most shops will not do an alignment for free once your car leaves the shop. In other words, if the alignment shows you need a ball joint and you choose to replace it yourself, you will then have to pay again for an alignment. Usually if the shop does the repair, the 2nd alignment is included.
@Michael99959 that can only be a tire problem, weights would make is shake, not pull. Or then tightened them up too tight and damaged the wheel bearings. Scotty
Yup 😊. There's so many people on the comments who keep saying to do an alignment and I just feel so annoyed when proving them wrong. All the dealer and mechanic wants is your money, that's why they say alignment. My dad replaced and aligned the tires of the odyssey to solve the issue of it pulling to right. And after he died, it still pulls to the right. So the most likely reason is that one of the wheels don't spin freely.
I love you man! You have saved me well over $3,000 in expensive auto shop labor costs. Albeit, there have been a few things that I couldn't/shouldn't do on my 2006 Kia Spectra or the 1996 Ford Escort wagon. Keep the videos coming! I always look forward to them.
Turns out it was the TIRES pulling the car. The alignment shop swapped the tires on the front and it pulled in the opposite direction. No more Nexen tires!
@Olddog231 the video explains this. That means one of the tires you rotated is worn unevenly or has a broken belt inside. If you follow the procedure in this video, it will show you which tire is bad. Scotty
Scotty: God bless you. You are a bg help today as I will be driving to Michigan from Philadelphia. We will keep thinking of you and my first cup of coffee when we get to the road stop will be one to "Cheers for Scotty!" Thanks Man... you rock.
Hello Scotty, I recently bought a 2003 "Acura Rsx Base Model" and everything works fine on the car it has 147xxx Miles in it . Except one day I got on the freeway with my brother and it was raining and I was going the speed limit which was 60 mph and when I switched lanes I made a 360 spin on the freeway and that was a really scary experience for me luckily nothing happened to me and my brother we got out and made it home safe. The next day I told my parents about it and my mom bought new 2 new tires for the front, gave the car and alignment on the front and the back and changed the front left control arm bushing. But it still does the same thing even on the street whenever I hit a little bump or switch lanes, I feel the car pull to the left or right and I would really appreciate it if you could help me out on what else it could be because I'm running out of options. Please. Thank you for your time.
If that RSX is rwd for whatever reason, its cause you hydroplaned without letting go of throttle 😆, that and sway bars, and or bald tires, camber due to messes up struts, etc, if its not the tires, its suspension, could even lead to motor mounts, when you accelerate and it pulls to that side, I advise you pop that hood and look at your motor mounts, if it steers right, check the one on that side cause that will cause you to veer off
You know there's so many people who are not in the same financial situation as you. Just cuz you're filthy rich and can get new car after new car all the time any time doesn't mean everybody can. Please be practical. Why would u wanna switch to different cars. If you think about it, cars are treated the same as houses, but 10 times cheaper. Would you wanna move to a new house if your microwave stopped working? HELL NO! Would you want to move to a new house just because your garage isn't opening? HELL NO!!! Same goes for cars. Would you want to buy a new car just because your battery is dead? HELL NO! Would you want to buy a new car just because your old one pulls to the right? HELL NO!!!
it certainly can effect side pull. And if the bar won't fit, something is wrong. Either the wrong bar, you're putting it on wrong, or the frame is bent.
@Matthew55904 Moving side to side is almost always a bad tire or tires. As for the noise, sounds like a hole in the exhaust system, check that first. Cats will rattle when they go bad generally. Scotty
The good thing about talking to a professional is the fact that they know to think of common problems first. I would have thought of alignment first, and evidently I was wrong since this video is all about tires. Thanks for the insight.
@BrownMan59 go to a front end shop, they can adjust it to a certain extent. If they can't, then it would need front end parts that were broken and they could tell you which ones.
@pancracius09 Not necessarily, first you must have the alignment checked and check for worn suspension parts, which most people can't do themselves. But if you put the rear tires on the front as a test, and it stops pulling, it is the tires.
@mds2465 well, depends how badly worn the other side is and if it's a drive tire or not. For example, if it's front wheel drive and it's a front tire, yes. But if it's a back tire on that car, no, you can use the old one over.
even i can't align a front end, too much special expensive equipment is needed. You can guess by trying to get both front tires to point relatively straight, but of course that's not fully accurate due to toe in on most car designs.
@baudilus Generally that's a bad tie rod, if the bearing is bad it will have play in all directions you pull. And wheels always grab some with brakes, that's normal. Scotty
@13FravelJ If they are really worn, they will have play when you jack up the car and pull on the wheel at 6 and 12 oclock positions. But if not, you have to load it up on the ground, put it in gear with the brake on hard, give it some gas and have someone look at the balljoints to see if they move any as you gas it. Scotty
@sandydogy Ball joints will have play when you pull on the tire, as I show when I pull on the tire in the video. If you have play pulling at the 12 and 6 oclock position, the ball joint is bad. Scotty
@sbab83 You can if you're cheap, but it's always best to replace a bad tire BEFORE it goes really bad and blows. Bad tires run hotter and will eventually blow. Scotty
@baudilus Spinning like that is normal. But if you have a bad wheel bearing, you will wobble pulling the wheel in Any direction. If it only does it in one direction, then it's a bad tie rod in most cases. Scotty
This video... Rocks. My 02 CRV has been pulling to the right even after I replaced camber bolts on that side, and got a professional alignment. The problem started after I installed a new right wheel hub last month. Ever since, I haven't been able to drive straight, even with the alignment. Could a new stiff wheel hub cause my car to pull to the right?
@sreejicrawl well, no they aren't, one of those is bad. I would bank on a suspension problem, like a worn tie rod or a frame bushing, or a bad front end alignment. Scotty
My Civic did this, it was annoying as hell for weeks I took it to several different places and finally heard from one that it was not in need of an expensive alignment but it was radial tire pull and all I needed was a new one. Lucky for me it was still within it's 90 day warranty.
@sotocapo yes, of course, but you can't do an alignment, only a mechanic with REALLY expensive tools and years of experience can do that. but, you can do this test. Scotty
you jack it up and pull on the wheel for play. Then if you feel none, remove the tire and pull on the ball joint using a giant pray bar to see if loaded it has any play, they are harder to check as they often need force to check em, unlike things like tie rod ends that are easy
get a carb overhaul kit and try rebuilding it. Or, if it's really bad, find a weber carburetor kit to replace it with. They are much better carbs anyway.
Man i love your videos...after getting tired of fixing so many cars thru the years i just go on youtube and watch you fix them instead...that´s awesome.
Thank you for this video, I’m going to test this method out and see which tire it may be or even if it’s just the tire pressure to resolve the pull issue. Thank you so much for this video. My car is my baby and I want to be sure it’s taken care of. ❤
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You So Much! I tried the front tire switch test & it turned out to be the solution for my 1967 RS Camaro Convertible. It's a daily driver. It was so irritating drive that thing with it always wanting to turn left.
I DIY alignment on classic cars because I had too many bad experiences at the shop. Some cars require shims and some alignment shops have none. Sometimes they only do toe or do +1 when I gave them -1 on paper. First time is a little time consuming but second time goes pretty quick. Digital angle finder is my friend. DIY allows you to tune out any mild pull by tweeking caster and fine tune steering effort vs tracking on manual steering.
@ihavenousername1805 yes, it can, but of course you can't adjust that stuff yourself, a front end shop has very expensive tools and experience in that.
Good advise about checking tires. Had hard pull. Checked alignment, tuned PS and inspected all steering components. Tires looked perfect. Disabled PS; still pulled. Only suspect left was tire. Switched tires around and sure enough I had a perfect looking tire that caused a hard pull. Guess the belt let loose internally after sitting over winter and driving flat spot out?
thanks alot man.. I was scratching my head and re doing alignment over and over and I already checked the joints, visual tire, etc.etc. switched them and it was a tire. must have a busted internal belt or something. tires weren't old either so you never know.. great tip.. all good now
Here's a good one for you, 2007 PT Cruiser GT while driving at normal speed and the car shifts through all the gears when into over drive the car torque to the right just a little, what is it that's causing it to torque to the right? I've replaced everything that has to do with the front end suspension, EVERYTHING!
Scotty, you're the Man! Per your advise I moved front tire to opposite side, so it pulled that way. Now with those front tires now in the back it's all good, Many thanks? BUT, can I now not worry about that problem tire since it's on the back and out of mind???

@paulicapopcorn no, wheel weights cause vibration, not pulling.

I had same problems with Nexen tyres aswel. Apparently they have some real quality issues. Mine are Nblue 4 seasons
@Olddog231 the video explains this. That means one of the tires you rotated is worn unevenly or has a broken belt inside. If you follow the procedure in this video, it will show you which tire is bad. Scotty
FYI you missed the fact you rotate front to back only if the tire is directional and that a miss-mount or backwards directional tire can cause a pull
+Thebad300 YEP!
@ryechidom of course it could be, but that's simple to check, jack it up and see if it's sticking. Scotty
great energy!!!! I love your presentation!!! way to go!
Scotty: God bless you. You are a bg help today as I will be driving to Michigan from Philadelphia. We will keep thinking of you and my first cup of coffee when we get to the road stop will be one to "Cheers for Scotty!" Thanks Man... you rock.
@fordbroncodave Can't cover everything in a three minute video I'm not a magician. Scotty
@desperado4846 If it didn't do it before, the tires or rims are not correct, either worn tires or bent rims. Scotty
+Ivan Lopez find a better alignment shop that understands tire tracking and suspension systems better. something is wrong in the front end somewhere
+Scotty Kilmer Thanks! Will be looking into that I really appreciate it.
+Ivan Lopez are you sure you werent hydroplaning and then caught grip at the wrong time which caused you to spin out?
sounds like you need shocks or other suspension parts. a new car and or some driving lessons. hehee
If that RSX is rwd for whatever reason, its cause you hydroplaned without letting go of throttle 😆, that and sway bars, and or bald tires, camber due to messes up struts, etc, if its not the tires, its suspension, could even lead to motor mounts, when you accelerate and it pulls to that side, I advise you pop that hood and look at your motor mounts, if it steers right, check the one on that side cause that will cause you to veer off
Love these videos!!!!!! Thank you so much. You have made my wife think I am the smartest man alive!!!!! I can’t thank you enough.
All this information is WRONG! What you do when your car pulls to one side is you buy a new one off the lot each time this happens, dummy.
Jerry Springer fu jerry
Jerry Springer is dis de real jerry jerry jerry no
Docta Penis yawn.....

What is frame
@Matthew55904 Moving side to side is almost always a bad tire or tires. As for the noise, sounds like a hole in the exhaust system, check that first. Cats will rattle when they go bad generally. Scotty
My car's steering shakes and car pulls to right on jumps. I'm confused about the problem diagnosis??
I love watching Scotty so much bro, if I’m feeling down watching him explain how to diagnose and fix a car makes me smile
The good thing about talking to a professional is the fact that they know to think of common problems first. I would have thought of alignment first, and evidently I was wrong since this video is all about tires. Thanks for the insight.
@wardubo That's because there are lots of possibilities. Can't change the way things work. Scotty
get a tach, I got that at auto zone, and the wiring directions are inside the box.
@BrownMan59 go to a front end shop, they can adjust it to a certain extent. If they can't, then it would need front end parts that were broken and they could tell you which ones.
from a mechanics view thank you so much for posting that i hope everyone pays very close attention!! cross your own tires first
@pancracius09 Not necessarily, first you must have the alignment checked and check for worn suspension parts, which most people can't do themselves. But if you put the rear tires on the front as a test, and it stops pulling, it is the tires.
@cichmugs if moving tires did nothing, get to a front end shop for an alignment first.
@Matthew55904 Yes, sort of, It no longer sees the same problem, so it turns the light off. Scotty
Scotty
Hello ,,,,wud one front shock absorber being stronger than the other cause pulling ,thanks
it often will on front wheel drive cars with a really worn out shock on one side
Scotty
@Dosalt Sure, if you're a mechanic, but that costs money. People can try this test themselves.
Scotty
You gave me more answers than a car shop I checked out. Thank you
This video...
Scotty Kilmer will never die
find better alignment guys, I use cotton brothers in houston and they have always fixed such problems when I got em.
I like this guy. To the point and still is energetic at an older age keep on rollin dude!
get a carb overhaul kit and try rebuilding it. Or, if it's really bad, find a weber carburetor kit to replace it with. They are much better carbs anyway.
Best video I've watched all day. Love it. I'm going to try this on my car
Man i love your videos...after getting tired of fixing so many cars thru the years i just go on youtube and watch you fix them instead...that´s awesome.
great video... Do you have any videos on how to check what makes your car pull to one side after a car accident? what to check for... to fix it
Thank you for this video, I’m going to test this method out and see which tire it may be or even if it’s just the tire pressure to resolve the pull issue.
@Roy77Even Bad wheel bearing on the left. Scotty
Hi mate, I have a ford kuga when I go on certain cambered roads I have to hold my steering wheel slightly to the right to keep it straight.
thanks alot man..
@KiranTaker270 depends on how picky the inspector is. Of course, check the tire pressure first, cause if one's really low it will do that.
Hello Scotty, would it be possible that it's the wheel instead of the tire causing this?
