    New to the wonderful world of crickets. I bought 60 large crickets. They started laying instantly. Friday the first batch started hatching. 3 days later I must have well over 1,000pinhead, probably a lot more. Keeping them in 3gal bucket on heating mat with cover mostly on. Feeding carrot and fish flakes. Once they all hatch I will move them to a bigger enclosure. For water I'm using a damp paper towel. Thanks for the advice.

    Excellent video. Best one I have seen on keeping pinheads alive by far. Most RUclips videos on breeding crickets focus on getting pinheads (which is very easy if you ask me) and stop there. No one goes into detail as to what is needed to keep them alive. Like you said, pinheads have different requirements than adults and no one else ever seems to mention that. Honestly, like you guys, I had figured this out by myself over a period of time and the loss of a lot of crickets. So many in fact that I actually stopped breeding them for a while. I wish I had had something like this a long time ago.
    Just a few observations to corroborate your suggestions. More space... I am sure I was keeping mine too crowded (I'm having this problem with my roaches and mealworms too I think but one species at a time) By adding more egg carton I was able to create more space and my losses were less. Obviously you can use bigger bins as well but for some space is limited. More food... I also used to keep my food in small dishes but now I sprinkle it throughout the cage and it seems to help a lot. Heat... I knew pinheads needed more heat but just how important it was never dawned on me until I went through a couple of summer and winter cycles. I found that during the hot summer periods I had better results. I aim to keep my room at 78-80 at all times but certain area get lower in the winter and higher in the summer I have enclosed my pinhead shelf and added a heat pad to keep things constant at about 85 and it has really helped. Humidity...I found this to be the hardest to control by far. I started by using lids but like you I found that I would get condensation build up at times which wreaks havoc among pinheads. Another problem I had was mold. If I removed the lid I had a hard time keeping the humidity up. What I started doing, much like you misting the egg cartons, was I would get one carton soaking wet and then place it on top of all the others. Now with my enclosed pinhead shelf keep a pile of egg cartons in a dish and just keep them soaking wet and the humidity stays in the 70% range as long as I don't let them dry out. I also will throw a leaf of head lettuce in the tub not only for drinking but for humidity as well.
    Hope you don't mind my suggestions. Like I said, they pretty much verify everything you have said in the video. I've watched a couple of you videos and found them to be very informative but now I am going to go back and watch them all. Thank you for your continued efforts to help everyone in the hobby (or business) and I wish you continued success.

      Thanks for the feedback ! Yeah if you go back and watch some of my older videos you will find some information that isn't relevant any more or is out dated. I really appreciate all the information you provide! We are still learning and don't know everything yet, but hopefully we will some day! Hahah

    Hi Zachery, thanks for the advice about maintaining humidity, I didn't think that humidity is needed so much. My incubator has 25-30% humidity at 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Now I will increase the humidity. By the way, I grow Gryllus locorojo, it grows at 90 degrees to an adult of 40 days and lives in an adult state for 1 month, and Gryllus bimaculatus grows to an adult of 28 days, but lives for two weeks in an adult state. Thank You for the video, you helped me a lot! If my English translation turned out to be funny, sorry Google translate =)))

      Hey there! Thanks for the support!
      The humidity isn't a must but it will affect how many pin head crickets will make it to adult hood. The humidity will also have a slight affect on how fast the crickets can grow.
      All crickets grow at different speeds! Interesting stuff about the gryllus locorojo!
      Zach!

    THANK YOU!!! I recently purchased Mantellas that require pinheads, and I could not keep them alive! I have no problems with keeping the larger crickets alive, but these little ones had me stumped.

    Nice work mate. Even with daily hatches my sizes are always varied. Are you using black or brown crickets. Chirp on, Matt

      Hey mate! So we have Acheta domesticus, which is a brown cricket. The size is so important and hard to get right!

    When the aspens start to grow how many containers do you separate one container into?

    • @Schubugs
      @Schubugs  3 года назад

      We don't count them and separate them. Our containers are so big we haven't need to do it yet. we have heaps of space
