- Go to nordvpn.com/od... or use code oddtinkering to get a 2-year plan with a huge discount! This GoPro was sent to me to be restored and repaired by a subscriber who didn't have any use for it. The camera was released by GoPro on 2012.
The camera has some visual damage, the USB port is damaged and the lens has some scratches. When I tested it it wouldn't stay on but it would just keep turning on and off after few seconds. There is also some dust on the sensor which causes dark spots on the video and pictures.
The GoPro was disassembled. And I noticed one of the connectors had gone loose. Probably after falling or lot of vibration. After putting the connector back the camera worked normally. Now I could see what the image was like. There were some dots caused by dust particles on the sensor. I took the sensor off and cleaned it gently with a dry q-tip.
Next I repainted the front cover. I started with sanding and filling all dents with filler. Next it was coated with plastic primer to ensure teh paints stays on. I also remade the logo with a water transfer image that I printed out. Finally everything was clear coated to protect it further.
I polished the lens and LCD screen to remove scratches. Acrylic polishing compound was used for the screen and glass polish compound was used for the lens. I also used a special glass polishing pad because glass is very hard and polishing it by hand would take a long time.

it doesn't open to me
Also props to Nordvpn for letting him do silent add. Respect.
I respect it but wouldn't mind him talking for the ad either. Glad they gave him the option either way.
Yeah it’s really cool that they respected his video style! Much better sponsor imo!
Ok we've already got an ad from them in the video, don't need more in the comments.
That was the best nord VPN ad, I've ever seen. I kinda like it now hahahah

Dear everyone on youtube: This is how you do sponsorships. This is how you get people to watch the sponsorship section and not just immediately skip forward.
I skipped forward anyway. NordVPN was hacked and personal data revealed in the recent past. Sometimes no VPN is better for your privacy.
Doesn't matter what is being sponsored I still skipped over it. Still annoying to have ads purposely placed in the video itself instead of them popping up on random spots in the video which you can skip after 5 seconds. Another sell out but great video anyway.
Yes i watched that sponsorship but the others here are just being rude
Note to most people: DO NOT clean an image sensor with a q-tip and alcohol unless you REALLY know what you're doing. For most image sensors you should use a lint-free microfiber flexible swab designed for cleaning image sensors and methanol instead of isopropyl alcohol. Otherwise you run a major risk of permanently damaging the sensor.
well, technically you cleaning an IR-filter, not the actual sensor, but yes, you are right, swab is must-have for this type of work!
and he didn't blow out the inside of the lens before reinstall
Yeah, I love these videos but I cringed at that...
@@k0dabeat117 How do you know he didn't? If he videoed every single thing he did to a restore, it would take hours to watch it.
not relevant for this video though. he was not cleaning the sensor directly.
We as the fans are patiently waiting for the day of when the Ps3 restoration video is released
Only if it's the 4USB fat version. So many incredible backwards-compatible systems going to waste that could be restored. :)

@@hsbravati1 I dunno, it sounds like it runs pretty dang good to me, and the little bit we see it looks like it's in good shape.

Just need a Ducktor mount for that bike (with accompanying tiny helmet, of course).

Polishing of the lens removes the anti-reflective coating, so it reduces image contrast and resolution. Scratched lens better to be replaced.
i thought the same when i saw the lens reflex with no colors after polishment...
And can create little distortions on the curvature creating problem with focus and blurring.
Came here to find this comment. Never ever polish a camera lens. They all have some kind of coating.
Image quality during the motorcycle ride is very bad. It confused me because I have a 1st gen Gopro and the image is better than that one. That's probably because he removed the coating, for sure. But great restoring nonetheless
obviously correct, but we are all here for the spirit of the game. An old GoPro isn't worth all that patience and expert effort anyway. There are plenty good used ones, but this is a restoration channel. And there is no human way to re-apply a correct factory-grade coating on a lens without proper industrial equipment. So degraded as it is, it works and it looks the part, which in a world of disposable equipment and planned obsolescence is worth commending.
thanks for not spending 10 whole minutes sponsoring nordvpn and continuing to restore the camera while talking about the sponsor instead!
Call me crazy, but I would prefer the complete ad break. That way I can just skip ahead in the video without having to hear or see it (the creator gets paid whether people watch it or not, so skipping it is a-okay). On this one I had to keep watching as a garbage service by a garbage company that can't secure servers properly was advertised to me. Not a great way to do it.
@@mjc0961 but he keeps restoring the object while advertising the product, you could just watch him do it and ignore the text that advertises nordvpn
@@luigivoncheeseburgerjenkinsiv it distracts the attention. Better to have a separate3 add that my AdBlock can skip. They know it so they now force feed us with this garbage text over video. Also fick NordVPN, they were hacked and tried to keep it quiet. Secure my ass.
with this argument it's impossible not to call you crazy

What I've learned from your channel is despite the fact consumer goods do everything in their power to convince you to throw them away and try to stop you from repairing them, a little bit of patience can fix a lot more than I'd think.
I'm sure there's not much call for it but with your skill, I'd love to see a restoration of a vintage antique sewing machine, a White, Domestic, Kenmore or any of the White rotary clones. Love the Ducktor! Thank you for your videos, they are awesome!
Errsddadf nn,h
It's so satisfying to watch you take something that many would throw away and bring it back to life. Not only that, but make it look new again. Thank you for your video's. They are both therapeutic and educational.
For real, is there anything this guy CAN'T do?? These videos are amazing.
Fix a vacuum with a shot motor?
@@FrenchFryCheese04 I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he could somehow fix even that
I’ve watched many of his videos. I’d say I’ve learned the most from this one. Love learning new things and you do it all while never saying a word. Brilliant.
hahaha that was an LTT level of sponsor transition
That's Private Internet Access or PIA
It really was an LTT level Segway ngl
Out of so many videos I've seen on RUclips with sponsors, this is by far the smartest way to highlight sponsors on the video
I love the idea of odd tinkering's motorcycle gloves being identical to the gloves he uses during a restoration.
The "talk free" ads are a nice touch. I immediately started fast-forwarding when I saw the "NORD VPN", realized that I had missed an important part of the disassembly, did a little rewind, and now I know about NORD VPN. Very clever ad read, Mr. Tinkering Man. 🤓
Now THIS is how you do sponsorship advertisements on a video!
Idk, Internet Historians Nord VPN ads are pretty hilarious.
Hi. What about the ar coating on the lens?
When polishing it, it went away. And it's there for a reason. At night the reflections on the lens surface make the image blurry. I dont mean to critizise, its just a thought. Regards
Do you know if you can replace that coating?
@@ricardocea4957 Isn't Odd Tinkering in Finland?
I like how you included the sponsor in the actual video and it was not some boring unrelated segment no one wants to see. Kudos!
Nice automated comment that's obviously fake. Nobody wants or cares about Nord VPN.
I'm a simple man, I see The Ducktor, I upvote.
Will just get a new one than repairing a broken action cam, cost almost the same. DJI action 2 for the win.
Ive been watching an American bloke’s channel who seems to be an imitator of yours. He lacks your finesse, and he doesn’t have captions. You’re the king!
Congratulations on making a midroll ad that doesn't need skipping. Genius.
I love these vids, restoration is so satisfying :)
Ad integration is great. Brief and appropriate. I like it.

@@ijnmutsuki7031 kills camera lens and sensor, so it stars to produce bad image and to protect yourself says "it's a small camera from old time, don't expect it to work good", but we all know a reality, the gopro gives very same result even on new products.
I miss the Ducktor’s beak
Always good to see Herr Ducktor
Helpful hint with waterslide decals. A few drops of Microsol under the decal to make it look like it was painted on (it's a mild solvent that melts the decal slightly onto the surface so ridges and seams don't cause bubbles or silvering), and then clear coat over it after it is completely dry
I just don’t understand why there are people disliking the video. Did amazing job of restoration.
It's amazing to see how the inside looks way simpler than I thought.
I was expecting some witch craft or something. 😂
Crazy to think that they have gone all the way up to 9 with Gopros.
I remember when the hero 3 was new
Funny how education and learning dispel the mystery....
In my case it always leaves the 'wonder' and the 'wow' factor in place though. :)
LOVE watching these types of videos even though I have little experience w/hardware myself. (I program as a hobby :D )
The development of microelectronics is an amazing story, but I'm more in awe of the "gadgets" before microchips, like those old timey cash registers and such that get restored. Just can't keep from wondering, how did they design such intricate stuff?
I’m not sure but I’ve heard the Ducktor is a quack.
That silent ad is brilliant for not ruining the vibe. Ngl nordvpn is nice, i use it myself mainly for netflix and the speed and connection is more stable than using free vpn. Also the speed loss its just a little
I binge watch your vidoes. Always enjoy seeing the work that you put into a restoration. You are really good at incorporating sponsorships into the videos. It is much better than cutting away to watch someone go on about something you can tell they never use.
i liked how you didn't break from the normal ASMR video format for the sponsor spot
i love how much you care for *details*
I am just patiently waiting on the DS restoration and finally be able to fix the touch screen (if possible). Great Vid as always!

If I sent to you my 2DS which has one of the screen oversaturated (probably a problem of the inside board) could you repair it and send it back to me? I'm a big fan I'd love to get it repaired from you 💕
I know of an NTSC GameCube that needs a little work done, too. Apparently it cuts on and off repeatedly, and the disc reader isn't working in some manner. Former may just be because of dirt.

Fun Fact: About 9 years ago, GoPro gave away a GoPro daily, plus all the accessories. People won from all over the world, and the winners posted pictures of the box full of 'goodies'. Sadly, the daily give-away ended.
Since you restored a GoPro, someone should send you an MP3 Player. i.e. Sony

I believe there is a coating on the lens that went away with polishing. You would be better off with a new lens if the cost is normal.
correct, there's an anti-glare coating on the lens which is removed with polishing.
