I Bought 6 "Unfixable" GoPro's - Are They Really Unfixable? GoPro is known for their unfixability but I paid $641 for these 6 cameras because I decided to try to fix them anyway. A number of the GoPro's actually ended up working fine despite the back LCD screen being cracked. I fixed the front lens on a couple of the cameras to get them back in good condition. I also replaced the rear LCD and digitizer on a GoPro 7 Black... which wasn't a pretty fix but everything did work when I got it back together.

About This Video: I bought 4 GoPro 7 blacks and 2 GoPro 8 blacks to see if I could fix them. 2 of the cameras actually were just fine already and 2 of them worked fine despite having broken rear screens so I decided to leave them like they were. I replaced the rear LCD and digitizer on a GoPro 7 Black... which wasn't a pretty fix but everything did work when I got it back together. I also opened one of the GoPro 8 Blacks up to try to replace the rear LCD and digitizer but unfortunately wasn't able to buy a replacement part to get that fixed. Guess I'll have to save that one for later.

Do you have a broken GoPro laying around? I'm still surprised that GoPro makes their devices so difficult to repair.
I'm thinking that once you have everything compressed back into the casing, etc, like usual and once the internal glue is set, then go over any open edges and seams where water would go through with some super glue, loctite, or similar that has the same heat and cold and PSI tolerances as the GoPro, using a toothpick if needed so it'll stay waterproof to the same specs. And before that application of sealer sets in, use like acetone or something that making sure beforehand that it won't dissolve the plastic, with a qtip to remove the excess. Depending on the sealer, you could use like warm water or something, especially if it's freshly just applied. Maybe this can work in your case. Good luck!

Hi, if you dont end up repairing the gopro back to stock you can sell it as Naked gopro for drones. Many are looking for it and you can sell at the same price as a repaired gopro

@@Tronicsfix I bet the big reason why the 6 sold for $600 - while it's not mentioned, naked drone application, that's the where the value is. The seller probably didn't want to bother with it. Also while googled it, I see there are kits to cover the guts. I think buying a new GP to strip down, might make most people hesitant, the cracked screens/lens cover units are perfect. The trashed body unit, you tested the repair on, would have been perfect.
Yep, I did a GoPro teardown of a Hero6 and I've actually been looking around for a broken Hero8 to do the same to. It just needs to record. The back screen can be cracked, but it still needs to function to pair it to a phone. Once it's paired the phone can take over the function of the back screen. The whole goal is to make a GoPro that weighs 30g or less.
Yes! Now the Hero 6 price went up a lot due to this. I bought one with a broken screen for 110 euros, now they are selling for like 200!

I'm a huge right to repair advocate who literally is a sales manager for an electronics repair company. But I just don't see how a design not conducive to repairing is the same thing as barring repair through legislation and disrupting replacement parts supply chains and aftermarkets.
There's a difference between right to repair and making something easily repairable.
@@SmallLab129 Especially for devices expected to have significant water resistance. The adhesive was what was messing him up in this video. To me it seems obvious why they'd use aggressive adhesive in their designs.

This is one of the problems of herd mentality. If ppl would stop buying a product when pointless changes are made like an irreplaceable lense covers or other nuisances they would have to start listening to us and do a better job.
Yes, agreed. Part of the problem is when a company makes a really good product.
@starshipeleven Gopro might be a specific brand however when someone thinks extreme sports camera or a small portable mountable camera a lot of people call them Gopro. I'd get a Gopro over any other similar brand. The thing is in the video he says they aren't repairable so I must have been watching a different video as it sure looked repairable to me, a bit difficult sure but definitely repairable.
Apple would go bust very quickly
I had/have the GoPro Hero 5, 6, 7. Broke at least 2 lens covers while mountain biking. On older GoPros I also had to replace them because of small scratches from constant "cleaning" in dusty or muddy conditions. So I did not buy the 8. Also not the Hero 9. The Hero 9 is quite heavy. Not ideal on the helmet. And the heavier the harder to keep it in place with the chest mount. Some years ago I tested some other brands but they could not compete with GoPro.

Before you start prying on a shattered screen like that stick a piece of packing tape over it. It will keep the shards from flying all over the place, most importantly in your eyes.

Yep this makes dealing with shattered screens a million times easier.
Also, wear eye protection and cut proof gloves.

I would recommend using B7000 for repairs that require waterproofing. Its a liquid adhesive that cures relatively quickly. Perfect for repairs like these.

@@Tronicsfix That's actually why I clicked this video, I thought repairing a gopro made b7000 a no brainer since I've heard about it being used to help maintain some level of water resistance with phone repair. Do you think its possible to get at least slash or dunk resistance using b7000?

Just sad to see this company making a landfill contributor. Its a pathetic trend that doesn't make sense.
In fairness to GoPro, they do have the excuse of the fact these devices are intended to be highly rugged and resistant to all kind of conditions, which for a small device means repairability goes out of the window - unlike, say, a MacBook, which there is no excuse for.
@@Lukeno52 Things glued together are cheaper to produce , you would not mind these are expensive premium products .Mobile phones gone the same. Like the video says they could be all screwed together with O rings , and still be water proof

Apple continues that past $5000. Rossman was refused, and then repaired his in a video here at the YTUniversity.
He even brought in a 9 yr. old to repair a device on camera, after Apple refused to do it.

@@MrSupermugen Nice job on the condescending attutude but you don't know what you're talking about. I has little to do with form factor and everything to do with cost. It's cheaper to seal it with adhesive than use a serviceable watertight gasket.

There should be some fixable rating standards on devices. They put ratings on videos, ratings on food in the supermarkets, environmental markings on packaging etc.

For the unfixable hero 7s: if the boards inside are fine and only screen, battery, lens or something is broken you can sell the boards. There is a small community that makes "naked gopros" for cinematic first person view drones. They take out all the unnecessary stuff (all the plastic, screen, lens cover, battery, etc) off to save weight. These could still be worth something and be useful to someone.
They need to start making unrepairable stuff like this illegal. It's just incredibly wasteful, instead of replacing a part you need to replace the whole unit.

Nature of the beast re capitalism, they don't want you to ever repair anything if it meant each time it broke down you were forced to buy a new one. American carmakers were pretty nasty in that regard when planned replacement of a US car went from 20 years to 15, to 10 and down to 5 and they put in design flaws purposefully to make sure your big car almost self destructed to the set interval.
Form factor is the issue here, if its made repairable the camera wouldnt be this small, gopro users want smaller and better cameras, sorry but your point is mute because of this.

Why did they use glass? Even Nintendo was smart enough to put plastic screens on the Switch, because kids will drop it. GoPros will go through far more abuse. Sure it'll scratch easier, but the screen won't crack and you'd be able to buy protective covers anyway.
yeah plastic screen + glass screen protector is best combo, you get best of both worlds, plastic wont crack, and the glass feels better to touch/swipe on and wont scratch up as easily as plastic, and you can easily replace the glass screen protector if it ever cracks or something. Another annoying thing companies do too often is having glass back covers, they are just slippery and breaks too easily ugh

There's no reason for those screens not to be plastic, with simple protector on. They would never break, and its not a touchscreen you use 6 hours a day so you would mind it not being a glass

they are for active lifestlyes. However dropping them or hitting them about will still break them. Would be the same if you threw your bike around and hit it off things. With care go pros are perfect! Mount it and youre good
That Go Pro Hero 8 LCD didn’t have a dead spot on the LCD. Your finger started scrolling at the top black menu section instead of on the dark gray language scroll area.
15:50, next time plug it in first and see if the screen powers on before putting in the adhesive. You never know if the part is defective and you need to return it.

Funny thing is GoPro designed it to be removable on the hero 5-7. You have to remove the front lens to put it in a dive housing for scuba diving. Cracks me up that someone thought it to be not fixable or unusable. They made it so if it gets scratched or broken you can change it yourself.
Imagine having so little understanding of GoPro's to arrogantly inspect its exterior to assume that's where the "unfixable" part lies. Could be compromised water proofing, issues on a print plate causing the camera to stall mid recording, could be sound malfunctions, whatever.... could be 1000 things that deemed it unrepairable and this guy looks at a broken glass lens (replaceable without tools) and assume that's the issue. Pops in a battery and doesn't even try recording. Destroys the front of a camera, pops it back on twisted to look like a curly fry, puts a couple of double sided sticky tapes underneath and calls it pretty much fixed lol 😆 who wants a gopro that dies in rain? Can't believe how many likes vs dislikes this video has .... no critical assessment of this guys ignorance whatsoever 😳
Steve, thank you for taking all the pain for us. I'm sure after watching this, about half of us just tossed our broken gopros over our shoulder and into the trash!

It hurt me inside a little seeing you replacing the lens cover, which is easily replaceable with just your hand. You just have to pull it away from the camera body and twist. GoPro even sell these...

In the drone community, we take apart brand new gopros to make them as lite as possible. As long as the insides work, you could still possibly make a profit on them if you sell to one of us drone guys.

Seeing as you have the ifixit kit, there is a tool designed to be heated and laid on the spots where the adhesive are vs using hot air that can damage the plastics. I think the tool is called the i-opener, you throw it in the mic for a bit and it holds its heat but spreads out that heat so its not concentrated in one spot like the hot air gun
Thanks to your videos I have encouraged myself to buy equipment on ebay and repair them I have already done it with 2 gopro 5, an nvidia shield and some androd tv, a GPS garming,and 2 battery chargers
it is totally reparable, you can find front case on AliExpress for 20 dollars and new glue is in fact a problem for it but you can totally take your time and carefully heat it up and save the glue
I thought one might try using t-7000 or something like that. If it works with phones, why not here?
@@KnightMirkoYo I don't know glues im not a professional I fix stuff for hobby, I was surprised just that he haven't bought front cases for it, but im sure there is a glue that can be used instead of the original one
its totally worth to do second video on it @TronicsFix 1. front case on Ali 20$ piece if you get more I think it will be cheaper 2. t7000 glue 50ml 3$ on Ali 3. content for us, revenue from RUclips and at the end camera is worth around 200$

The hero 7 lens is user replaceable you just need to push it out and twist at the same time
Yes indeed, he was struggling because he was just trying to twist, instead of pulling on it and then twisting. Easily comes off.
Weird how it was so difficult for you to get the lens of, taking the lens of was actually a thing that I did pretty often when i had the 7 black. Because you need to take it of to put it into a protective and even more water proof casing.

After changing out these parts, it seems you would have to verify they are still waterproof before reselling them eh? Troublesome...
These would not be waterproof unless you're just replacing the camera lens.
I'd sell them 'repaired/not waterproof' - use a housing for all wildlife photography.
A housing ads a layer of protection anyway.
Think about this. If these several devices we see in this video had been housed at the time of damage, would that shock have been visited on the lenses and screens, or just on the housing??
* When I bought my first GoPro in 2013, I bought an underwater housing. I'm in Vegas. The only water I will encounter is in the fountains on the strip, or at a car wash. I bought a layer of protection from dust and shock.

@@BLiNKx86 Not unless you tell them about the waterproofing. Refurbished means meets all specs with minor cosmetic irregularities.
I’m impressed how sturdy these things are inside... Mine has survived plenty of abuse and still ticks along. There is surprisingly little inside them really for what they do... nice video, thanks!
Front lens cover is easily replaced on H7B, made me gringe a lot, when you used pliers. Just have to pull and twist. Also GoPro sells this part for 19 dollars.

Thx for sharing. Some devices just aren't made to be repaired. I like that you don't take it all apart but focus on what is broken. I am always impressed when you can reconnect those ribbon cables and know how to remove and solder the chips back onto the boards. I been paid for doing repairs to a computer once but that was a strange situation where the computer ran a test device and no one wanted to recode the software. I got a paycheck but it was a one shot deal. I do repairs now on what I own and can't afford to buy new so watching your videos helps me to see how to open things up. Those gopro cams are beyond me. Admire your guts for even trying.
I had to replace my Hero 4 Silver's rear LCD. I have never spent so much time on any repair but did eventually fix it.

Hey @TronixFix, 2 thinks I’ve learned from fighting with these. A box razor blade is great for getting rid of the old silicone from the frame, and B-7000 epoxy is great for re-waterproofing and for a more secure seal. TESA adhesive can break, especially with the abuse a GoPro gets. Hope this helps! Glad to see you working on new stuff!
Naked GoPro actually has a huge market potential. Those who fly with FPV Drones are constantly looking for Naked GoPro. So if you take apart GoPro, they are still salable

I suppose they think it indicates quality. It's like cell phones with glass backs that seem to shatter at the slightest tap!

“Unrepairable” literally needs a replacement lens, that’s supposed to be a user replaceable item.
Those front lenses are really easy to replace; you need to pull and twist at the same time. On my gopro 7 black i regularly remove it to replace with a polarisation filter. People who deemed it unrepairable obviously didn't know what they were looking at
Ther are even tools specifically for this that you can buy for a few quid to twist the lens off, without needing vice grips..
@TronicsFix I have 2 tips for these repairs. First heat gun not a bad heat gun but I think this repair would benefit from a full size heat gun from like Lowe’s or Home Depot.2nd the lcd pry or chip removal use a scraper type razor blade you can get in without scratching or damage and it pry good too. Also for sealing you could use jb stick for wet conditions around lcd. And silicon in a syringe to control spread for attaching front and rear. I holds things together better than you think.
Gopro has replaced all my broken ones without any issues whatsoever. Even when it was my mistake. For example when I inserted the memory card behind that stupid metal cover and broke the display. Without questions it was replaced within weeks (international shipping to the Netherlands takes time)

why? modular productions 99% of the time mean an increase to size, something that we dont want, gopros are big enough already.
@@MrSupermugen no, modular can be the same size. It normally means higher costs to manuf and in terms of R&D but less cost for diagnostics, repair, pollution etc.
Things are already fairly modular... The problem is the glue everywhere.
6 "Unfixable" GoPro's , they all work...., I see no problem with any of them, little cracks are not a problem
I love when you first attemp a repair.
I suggest adding a little layer of silicon, at work we do the same if we open a starter soleniod (on cars mainly) to replace bolt and contactors and then we add black silicon so its waterproofed and it doesnt rust from the weather or car washes
Betafpv does make a necked GoPro case which requires you to open the GoPro and remove the guts. This case also removes the screen. This might be a good way to resell broken gopros as converted for FPV drones.
Don't stress, your learning a new skill. You will get better with each GoPro repair. Considering you repaired a non repairable device. Keep practising and you will find a way to repair them without damaging them.
What about using something to sandwich the go pro to help the front adhere? Like a small piece of wood and a clamp with light/moderate pressure?
In stead of using the channel locks, get a friend with a mill or woodworking routers and make a "wrench" with a shaped opening the same shape as the front lens. The tool could be made of metal, plastic or wood. All could work.
This must be sealed with liquid adhesive, not just duable sided tape. Still a hard repair since everything is so compact.

They seem hard to repair, but I don’t see anything designed specifically to make it harder to repair. Not like Apple locking parts to certain phones. These gopros just seemed to be designed this way for functionality.
The GoPro 7 is waterproof without the front lens cover. To remove the cover correctly all you need to do is pull it away from the camera slightly and give it a twist, this is easily done by hand. That procedure is covered in the instructions that come with the camera and if you need to use the GoPro dive housing you have to remove that lens cover for it to fit the housing.
As far as adhesive goes you should look into Automobile glass removal and replacement adhesive you could probably dissolve the old one with some solvent, As for the destroyed front cover when taking it apart, it seems like it could be a small business opportunity for you, find a friend with a good resin printer and make a replacement plastic injection mould for it and get yourself a used manual plastic injection moulding unit and start offring the replacement front cover or simply buy as many damaged Go pro's as you can and use the mentioned tools to fix and resell them.
For cracked screens I would have used a cell phone screen protector! Clean it really good, lay a protector on it, press it down good, trim it with a Xzacto knife. The main problems with cracks is they let in moisture and dirt, the protector will seal them. I have repaired cell phones like that and they worked for years.
The bonded design is what makes it so rugged and sealed. The glass is much harder than plastics. They are not intended to be repaired but with nothing to lose its always worth a shot. I did the same peeling the glue and ended up chipping all the glass off. The trickiest bit was getting the plastic back to its shape, so it would be nice for that to be available as a spare, although some Chinese company would probably skin their clone with it. I bonded it back together with many pounds of force and it looks stock. But I accept I'll never ever be able to repair again. The density and the design to me shows what you are paying for and I'm reassured it's the design first then cost second.
Crazy what people consider as "Broken". I wouldn't have gotten rid of any of them.
That was a really great video. You inspire others to fix their tech too. I completely agree with your point that more companies should build products that can be more easily repaired.
The lens cover is not hard to get off due to the gasket! You have to lift it up a little so that the teeth on the lens to no grip into grooves on the case anymore. I found the best way to do it, is to use two guitar picks and push them between cover and case on the lower as well as the upper side.

To replace the front lens cover (like at 5:12), you could put a credit card or something thin in between two opposing corners of the lens cover and face of the camera, pry it apart so there is a gap in between the face of the camera and the cover, then twist it off.
everytime I did an gopro repair I purchased a new casing first (china ones...). If the screen is broken it is so much easier to swap the electronics to the new casing than repair it with the old one.

It shouldn´t be so hard to change the lens. There is a gopro case that you need to remove the lens. Another thing, have you tested the connections of the camera? Like is it charging? Is the HDMI connection working? I have a 4 black that works but I have to use a battery charger because trying to charge the battery using the camera USB directly does not work. Just an example.
We must support the Electronics Right To Repair so manufacturers will be forced to provide spare parts, repair manuals and easy designs on their products.
To remove the outer lens cover on the hero 7 you pull it out and rotate it anti clockwise. If you use a pipe wrench all you will do is break off the location tabs.
Rather than using tape, have a look for "T7000" on fleabay. It is a waterproof, black sealant used for touch screens & digitizer, when repairing mobile phones.
Applying silicone spray with a cotton swab to the rubber seal might make installation of the lens cover easier. My 2 cents.

I sometimes wonder, there are a lot acrylic products to fix car windshield. You just simple apply the product to the crack and let it cure under uv light. Then the crack will be barely noticeable. So I wonder if those products can be used to fix crack touchscreens. If so, you don’t need to replace them.
In the hobby of FPV racing drones, we consider these as brand new GoPros hahahah.

You need a clamping fixture to hold the base. That way you can pry the face or other pieces slowly. What I have come to know is the stronger the adhesive the slower you have to apply the prying force.
Good vid. The GoPro lens has to be pulled a little to unlock, then twist. Channel locks are overkill.

What’s your eBay or whatever you sell on? I watched your “fixing 44 broken consoles” video and would love to go look at consoles you’re selling. Been wanting a new 3ds xl, but since they’re discontinued I can’t buy it for new, and I can’t really trust anyone selling them used.
Replacing the lens cap may have introduced moist air into the device which may cause condensation on the inside. (But if the battery compartment is not isolated from the rest of the insides that may not be an actual problem.)
Looks like the next GoPro camera must make this easily repairable durable and reliable. Think over this matter when you start the first GoPro.
The further you got into the GoPro 8 the more I respected the GoPros build quality! Could cracks which Are only in the boarder of the rear lcd glass be filled with resin (a bit like a car windscreen repair)? The advantage would be keeping the waterproofing of the camera and non invasive IMHO.
The build quality is good. The reparability is atrocious!

In the future you might consider buying and using a waterproof adhesive for these sort of projects instead of double sided tapes.
That repaired GoPro 7 Black would work perfectly for all streamers, youtubers and other folks that need extremely cheap and good quality video recorder. Pity that there is no easy way to connect external microphone to that devices. Original converter from USB C to mic 3.5 jack input is very expensive for piece of cable.
GoPro on 4:20 is not broken. You started scrolling on the "language" black bar, of course it will not scroll, but on the right side you scrolled from the "english".
On the left side, you started scrolling a bit to high and that's why it didn't scroll, that's not a dead spot.
Im not sure if its been asked before. but there is this windshield repair epoxy that seems to work pretty well. Have you ever tried to repair a cracked screen with that? Would be interesting to see if it worked.
