Pious the Liche talking with the 3 Ancients about the weather, celebrities, and the plot to plunge the world into eternal darkness. Same old, same old really.

Xel'lotath: States there is much Pious doesn't know and never will Ulyaoth: Is the most condescending, talking about there being things Pious doesn't understand and saying he's an insignificant speck in the vast universe.
probably my absolute favorite video game of all time... *sigh* 13-year-old me absolutely loved the voices of ulyaoth and pious. i would stay up late and play this for hours. good times. ♡
I think it's kind of hilarious that whenever one of Xel'otath's personalities is friendly and respectful to him (how many of the other Ancients actually refer to meeting Pious as a pleasure?) the other one always makes up for it by being the most psychotic, paranoid, aggressive bitch to him. You never know where you stand with her.
Brilliant idea to compare all three of the same scenes between the 3 ancients in one video. The dialogue in eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is nothing short of sheer genius, but my favourite ancient has to be Xel'lotath. The things she says are just nuggets of pure gold. For example, when she refers about Mantorok to Pious, "How can you, a mere mortal, comprehend what that entity represents, or what power it can wield? We know not, and we know more than thou."
Nintendo still has the trademark. Surely, even without Silicon Knights, they can make a proper sequel to this amazing and underrated title. It's one of the best stories ever presented in a Nintendo game.
She's pretty paranoid. Even her two personalities don't agree on everything most of the time. They can't even make their minds up on whether they like Pius or not. I mean having one Xel'otath constantly switching between "Hi Pius, nice to see you mah boi" and "I DONT TRUST YOU FILTHY TRAITOR YOU SUCK", but when there's two, it must be one hell of a migraine. It's probably why Xel'otath creates most of her minions without heads to spare them the trouble of buying paracetamol.
+Emiscary1 I guess so. I don't like him particularly, either. Yet I love his voice particularly; it exudes raw fury and power, which is exactly what he represents.
'Nothing short of a miracle will keep him alive, and there hasn't been one of those for a long time.' One of my favourite lines in any game. Ever. No use calling for God to come and save you here.
And the best part is that it kindles some hope in your mind as the player. Some thought of "Maybe WE will be that miracle to save Charlemagne?" only for the game to slap you with reality and remind you that you still can't even remotely grasp the reach and power of what you are dealing with.
When I first saw the gods speaking, I was so excited, they are so cool! lol. Xel'lotath is my favourite, she has such a soothingly evil voice. Shes fab XD 5 stars! thanks for posting this!
You know, being the geek that I am, I've come up with a theory for the yellow Ancient. I believe the may really be all 4 Ancients in a sense. Like, its own form is so powerful the universe itself is unable to comprehend it. So it requires the 3 Ancients to give their own being to sustain it. Like, Chattur'ga allows it gain a physical form, Xel'lotath allows it to comprehend its own existance, and Ulyaoth allows it to use its Magick. And Mantarok would be the "rubber band" holding it together.
@GhostDoggSamurai I always loved that line myself. It was delivered with the perfect mix of arrogance and apparent boredom that you would expect from an ancient entity reluctantly depending on a human to carry out their plans. That's probably why he is my favorite Ancient.
The fun part is in the legacy of Kain series ( which was also started by silicon knights) he voices Moebius the time-streamer: an important & prominent villain that also served an unearthly entity in its machinations. But unlike Pious, Moebius had never actually seen his “benevolent god”, nor had the ability to do so.... until a certain spirit & a certain sword “clears things up” for him
i laughed when i read the description :D Xel's my favorite, although the first time i saw this cutscene with her i was like 'wtf?...' "make sure he is dead...or insane...or perhaps one, then the other..." X3 thanks for uploading :D i love this game!
It's funny, because Xel'otath is the only one who seems somewhat appreciative to him. When she's not arguing with herself over whether or not he's a traitor that is. Poor Pious, he never knows where he stands with her.
I kinda like how they talk about Charlemagne: he was fighting against pagan beliefs and trying to unify Europe under a stable christian empire. He gets killed and his empire splinters which will lead to more wars.
Very interesting dialouge. Even though Chattur'gha supposed to be the least intelligent, his speech is still very formal. He seems more intelligent than people who comment give him credit for, since when Pious said there was a flaw in the plan he already knew what Pious was thinking off. Still, Ulyaoth and Xel'lotoath are more formal. Ulyaoth especially.
Chattur'gha jus gets to the point, unlike the other two who will wax lyrically of how insignificant pious is compared to them. They are all memorable in their own way and represent a different type of evil.
it just occurred to me...Chattur'gha's the only one who is aware of the protagonists in the game, or the only one who mentions it, when he says "Mantorok has employed others to defend it."
Ulyaoth probably knows but doesn't care because of how arrogant he is. Likely to the point of thinking that the protagonists can't really do anything to make a difference, so he thinks, "why bother being concerned by something so meaningless?" Xel'otath is either too consumed by paranoia to truly notice, or she DOES notice but said paranoia prevents her from trusting Pious with that knowledge.
@HowlsInTheDistance He's the most imposing, sure, but I think Xel is supposed to be the most terrifying, in keeping with Lovecraftian themes. Ulyaoth, I don't know. I never found him imposing or terrifying.
They're all busy doing Too Human right now. Unless they bring in the 5th Ancient, I don't see how they could really pull of a sequel. Denis has expressed the desire to do another game in the ED universe, but I doubt it will ever happen.
One of the best details in this game is how Pious is so devout to his ancient yet they all treat him like an absolute piece of shit at worst and a minor annoyance at best. Even pious with his super human powers is still just a human, small compared to the ancients
Technically, Pious' Ancient was only defeated by the power of it's overpowered Ancient, the other just kept the Ancient Alex summoned from destroying the world.
Yeah, it is scary, but the good kind of scary where you revel in the experience itself and ponder the depths of fear. As Edward(?) says: soon, you will come to understand fear, as I have.
@jakluv9 I don't think Mantorok was saying those things. The only thing we can be sure of Mantorok "saying" is what that guy told Ellia in the ruins in the end of the level. Those other things could be the 5th Ancient or one of the others.
I'm glad I'm not the one one who thought that. Yeah Mantorok played just about every character in the story like a fiddle, from undead roman soldiers to cambodian dancing wenches to slutty persian princesses to Lovecraftian interdimensional horrors.
That would defeat the purpose. They are supposed to be things from in between the dimensions that we see. Read Lovecraft and you might start to understand. They probably don't even speak English, since Pious' speech is translated.
Well, formality is not concomitant with intelligence, so the way he speaks is irrelevant except to convey a sense of majesty and awe. That said, I think the point is that the Ancients are just totally beyond human intelligence and knowledge anyway. It is just that Chatty emphasis raw physical power, Xelly focuses on the mind, and Uly, on the planes of existence. If anyone is intelligent, it is Xel'lotath.
@moseslmpg I love Lovecraftian stuff too, but I always associated the ancients with the Chaos Gods from WH40k. Chattur'gha = Khorne, Ulyaoth = Tzeentch, etc.

It's even funnier when it's her whispery self that is friendly, when she's so accusing most of the time.

Awesome game. I literally spent weeks playing it lol!

I'll get right on it. Perhaps some sanity effects if I can catch them. Is this quality fine?
They already were doing that, they were the source of his power and could probably cut it off at any point they saw fit. The stuff in the scene just happened because they all have a big superiority complex.
Yeah! Like maybe by overcoming the 5th Ancient, Mantorok can break free of its shackles and finally go back to a higher plain of existence.
He pimps the whole universe. Not bad for a guy who can't move!
Xel'lotath can read minds, so yeah.
Yeah Mantorok played just about every character in the story like a fiddle, from undead roman soldiers to cambodian dancing wenches to slutty persian princesses to Lovecraftian interdimensional horrors.
