    Thanks for this video, very helpful.
    Can you please confirm if the video file breaks in the footage you're talking about is specifically to do with the Nikon system?
    @6:25 You mention that every 12.5 minutes there is a break/cut in the footage and creates separate files. Is that to do with the Nikon camera recording to internal SD, or is this break happening when recording in H.265 on the SSD on the Ninja??
    Seems odd if the later and a real pain if doing multi cam long form interview / corporate work. This is in my opinion one of the main reasons why you'd want H.265, long form recording without needing expensive large media (CFexpress etc).
    Any clarification would be amazing! Thanks again for creating this video :)

    Great info! I was also waiting for this to launch and I've got to say that I'm happy with the footage quality and file sizes, but I will stress that you need a powerful CPU to edit these files without using proxies. I pulled the footage into resolve and found that this codec is very CPU heavy, even if you have great GPU to support, it wont matter so buyer beware. I have an i7 10700K on my desktop and could play quarter resolution in resolve with a few dropped frames but the CPU was running close to 100% most of the time. I think an i9 10900K and up will give you a good experience for real time editing.

      I had no idea that there was a fee to use. In fact h265 has a 3 patent pool. Which means you have to pay more to use different tares of it. Atomos is using all three I believe, but don’t quote me on that. I just did some research on this patent…
      But there is something called AV1, which is completely free and at par with h265. That would have been a better option as it plays in any player.

    I was tracking along until the end when you were summarizing who this would be for and you said that if you did not have an ALL-I, this would be a good fit. Can you explain why you are saying this? Are you suggesting that if you have ALL-I you would be better off using that and doing some transcoding to another format to reduce your file sizes? I was thinking that the big benefit for H.265 was the file size reduction and ALL-I on my camera is really large. I appreciate the effort involved in putting this together. It provides some helpful insights. Thanks

    • @Aperture35
      @Aperture35  3 года назад +2

      Hello Chris, at time of making this video I was in the honeymoon phase with this codec. That should tell you enough.
      Full disclosure now, a viewer brought to my attention that the file All-i file sizes are at par with ProRes Lt when capturing 10bit 422 log… therefore, I would say that, ProRes Lt is a way better option than All-I.
      If you are doing it for the compresión, than All-i is pointless, as the files are large as you said.
      medium quality would be the reason why to purchase this, but then U have to deal with proxies.
      That leaves LQ and that is at par with a proxy in size and honestly it isn’t bad (check out my tethertools video from a few days ago, it was shot in LQ).
      So, based on all these, I would say $99 is way too much if you already have the ability within camera to capture, and coder within camera usually plays very well within premiere.
      So either stick with your cameras codec or use ProRes LT to capture your footage.
      One last thing, if you are purchasing this to capture 4k60p in MQ or LQ, thus far it doesn’t work or doesn’t work properly. Needs a firmware upgrade. Read Atomos ninja v firmware 10.67.1 notes

    One question tough.. Do you have any idea how the h265 compression handles the legalized / full range tag in the metadata?
    Because an old problem with the Ninjia V has always been the fact that the Nles don't recognize automatically the full range output of the Prores or DNx formats, creating confusion and under optimal results during editing (that's why Atomos in the end created that patch that is the legalized option, this is anyway only a walk around that don't really solve entirely the problem).
    I would be interested in this recent upgrade, but this point would be an important selling factor for me.
    Thanks again for your reply and keep on with good works!

      Where would I find the legalized info in premiere metadata?… I don’t see anything. But file does have less contrast when playing in legal mode… lumetri is pushing the levels to be within 0-100, but legalized black is 16 I believe, which this isn’t doing.

    Do you still think the same in 2023? I’m wondering if the ProRes LT might accomplish the same result as h265 HQ perhaps? While allowing a better workflow.

    • @Aperture35
      @Aperture35  Год назад +4

      Thanks you,
      There are many people that just don’t understand or don’t know how to use ProRes… it’s the best thing there is and compatible with all NLE’s… so, unlike l h265, where the NLE has to work hard to decompress, ProRes just works.
      I know u are speaking about ProRes LT, therefore I asume u are using Log. Which I would capture either in cam or ninja. Do not buy the h265 pack for ninja, it’s a waste of money and pointless. Plus both ProRes LT and H265M are about the same size, where as h265H is extremely heavy on NLE and very hard to edit and there isn’t any benefit in gain of color, tonality, exposure or sound. Your call as to what you would like to use. I choose ProResLt.

    Thanks for the review. I'm not sure if you can answer this question, but would the Ninja V allow you record on the Z6II in H.265 ProRes (NOT RAW) without having had the Nikon "RAW unlock" service performed on the camera? In other words an "out of the box" Z6II and a Ninja V for H.265 recording. Much appreciated, thank you!

    • @Aperture35
      @Aperture35  3 года назад +2

      Raw coder is not required for anything else other than ProRes Raw and BRAW. Out of the box all Nikon Z cams can export out of the hdmi 8bit video. How you want to capture that is up to you. The ninja at that level allows to capture that in ProRes 422 and DNxHR… if you want to capture that in h265, you just have to buy the codec.
      Now only the z6(II) and Z7(II) cams can export video in 10bit LOG 422. And that can be capture as well in all codecs mentioned.
      My honest opinion here. Although the codec is decent, it is very much a headache if you want to capture anything other than LQ. You will require proxies to edit. time consuming while ProRes is a much easier codec to work with as soon you plug it into your system.
      H265 just makes small files to later on archive…

      If you are only recording 8bit, in camera is good enough, you won’t see a difference in quality. Use ninja to record 10bit Log. Or to monitor what you are doing or for redundancy (Record in 8bit in camera and on ninja) as backup.

    • @Aperture35
      @Aperture35  3 года назад +1

      The h265 codec can only record what it’s fed. Just cuz you have an 8oz drink and you pour it into a 10oz cup doesn’t make it 10oz. So if you think about it from that aspect of view. It will make sense.
      You would want to buy this codec if:
      - your camera can’t record beyond 20 to 30 min continuously.
      - If you want to record 10bit 422 log in a compress format rather than ProRes
      - if you want to save space on tour drives when archiving and when shooting to last longer.
      There are various reasons why you would want to use it, and for many people it is necessary, because their camera internal recording isn’t enough.

    • @Aperture35
      @Aperture35  3 года назад +1

      if your videos are noisy, you are underexposing... in premiere, you need to convert the footage to log in the master tab of the footage fx. I would recommend you use the Vlog conversion rather than Nlog to give you a bit more pump in the midtones. but for better colors use Nlog. Just push your ISO and you will get better quality video. set your camera to the proper F stop you want to use then, use the 180 rule, say you want to shoot at 24P, then have your shutter at 48 or 50... I use 60 so I dont see flickering in my lights. anyways, then set your ISO to auto, and see what it tells you. based on that set it back to manual and set it the ISO it was telling you. dont use auto iso, your image will be shifting left and right when it sees highlights and shadows.

    • @Aperture35
      @Aperture35  3 года назад +1

      ProRes RAW - Monitor is PQ to see how your lumetri scope is looking with highlights and shadows. do not bottom out the shadows, they will produce noise. then set your monitor to rec709 to view the scene better, it might look over exposed, but it wont be based on how you set your camera to be within the limits of your cope. adjust your settings in the display tab of the ninja V to help you see better as well.

      On the Ninja V, DNxHD I would say is the worse codec there is, due to the way it handles colors and dynamic range. ProRes is very nice. On the other hand , the BlackMagic Video Assist 12G, handles DNxHD files like a champ. They have one additional setting that the ninja V doesn’t and it’s awesome.
      The low quality version (proxie) of h265 works the best and I don’t see any issues with it. Small files that can be archived and work perfect in any NLE. The one that I thought would have worked better, High quality all-i, performs the worse in your NLE.
