      Can confirm Airalo works very well. (you must follow and understand the setting up instructions first mind!)
      Used it on the last world cruise and worked in every country we tried. This time round rather than specific countries I will get the 'whole world' option which is extremely good value.

      When I went through Denmark I couldn't get any data on my phone so I used Maya Mobile (same thing) for the rest of my journey, installing it into my second Sim slot as an e-SIM. It's a good backup to have when you rely on your phone as a SatNav and you are going through multiple countries.

    Those 'abandoned' houses are generally 'famine' cottages, over 180 years old. The owners would have either died of starvation or immigrated to escape starvation. Those areas of Ireland are now massively depopulated, so no one to live in those cottages. Some do get restored, but cheaper to build new, with modern heat retention, larger, on less exposed plots.

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  24 дня назад +13

      Thank you for confirming this. I noticed Donegal’s population went from 250,000, to about half that during the famine😳 And it’s still nowhere near its peak number

    • @tbillington

      What caused the famine?

    • @bluefoam
      @bluefoam 24 дня назад +20

      @@tbillington it wasn't actually a famine'. The Irish were forced to eat potatoes, the rest of the crops and livestock were exported to Britain... The potato crop failed due to blight and the Irish were forced to starve to death while still producing some of the best quality food...

    We have a group of biker buddies stared on FB by four of us ISLAND CLASSICS that now has attracted many people throughout the world!
    There are many special bikes and collections of bikes I feel you could enjoy. Very happy to see you guys for a hook up if you ever make it back in the Larne area!.

      Definitely! I bought it to be everything from an everyday car, to road tripper and off roader. I’m very curious to see how things go with it!

    People were only too happy to move into modern homes in the 1960s and 70s. Old houses were cold, draughty and cramped. Nowadays people have started renovating some of the old ruins but it’s actually very expensive to do. Less expensive to build a new house in most cases. Lime mortar, natural slates, stonemasons, timber sash windows etc. Gets expensive quickly.
    Some though, are abandoned since the famine. Just sitting there for the best part of two centuries.

  • @jamesonpace726
    @jamesonpace726 24 дня назад +2

    'Murcans don't get Europe. 1 pub screams till 3:30 while another closes at 8. Here, 1 is a bar, the other we'd call a restaurant, unless there's some other Irish secret to such things....

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno 22 дня назад

      Probably started life as a normal pub and found there was more money in serving food. In a low population area, the few late night drinkers probably go somewhere else that isn’t full of families and kids having dinner so they end up closing early. Personally I think you shouldn’t even be allowed to call yourself a pub unless you’re open normal bar hours.

    You do love your wet deserts, Freddie! I'm afraid they don't appeal to me, they are too bleak, especially knowing what has been lost. (People, communities, flora and fauna). But a great playground for the jeep.

      Wow! That’s a bleak outlook! Living in the south of England I look around me and feel claustrophobic with all the people, I see the green spaces shrinking, the rubbish piling up, the bans being imposed on this, that and the other, the McD’s and Costa’s being built because there’s a spare mile of road in between the others, I see our crime infested cities, I see and feel the anger building and burning in everyone and I look at Freddie’s video of Donegal and it looks like a little slice of heaven.
