Icom 7300: How to Properly Set Mic Gain
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2024
- The Icom 7300 can easily become distorted and the power reduced if the microphone gain and compression are not set properly. In this video, I show you the proper way to set mic gain on your Icom 7300 so you have beautiful sounding audio and the full 100-watt output power.

This was a super helpful video to me about a year ago when I got my 7300. I've had several hams comment lately out of the blue that my audio settings sound perfect and it got me wondering where I got the info. Found this in my liked videos and recalled it was you, so thanks!!! I use a heil headset and don't have to change anything between the hand mic and the headset, which makes it nice and seamless when I take it portable.
Awesome to hear it worked well with your voice!
Hello Matt! Miss seeing you on RUclips brother. I really appreciate this video bud. I just got my 7300 yesterday. Hope to see you again soon! 73 brother
I thank you for a quick review of my new radio as my microphone levels are all over the place. Also worth noting, it was funny to see my APRS node up on your screen too here. 73's QNA
Good tip for all IC-7300 users.
Fantastic Very Powerful Video ; I have sent it to many hams, and i am using a 7610
Kudos my friend. I got lost with my new 7300 and all its features but you just hit it right on. Thank you much for sharing. Keep the good word. 73
Thanks for the video. I think I have my compression and mic gain on a bit too high causing the ALC to over shoot and putting my Acom amp to trigger the attenuation and I get hot switching. Going to lower it a bit and see if it helps
It is a nice rig with almost never ending variables and adjustments.
Thanks WORKS GREAT ON MY 7610
Thank you for this video!
Great video.
I've done mostly FT8 with my IC-705 for a few years, and today was the big jump to actually *talking* to people.
Santa had brought me a nice Heil Pro 7, and the gods of the airwaves provided a lovely group of contesters, in Italy and Spain, on 20 metres...
I managed, just about, to hear and be heard by an Italian station, but I noticed that my SWR meter (cheap Nissei RS-70) was barely showing 2 watts... when it should have been 5w!!!...
I'm guessing I really need to implement your settings carefully to be able to use the maximum (!) power of the IC-705 on battery.
Thanks again!

Great video 73
I used this information to tune my mic gain and compression on my IC-705. Thanks.
You’re welcome, Tim! Glad you found it helpful.
I did the same, sounds nice now and the meters look healthy, thanks to OP
Hello, can you tell me please,What are Your parameters of mic gain and comp on 705?
Thank RUclips

I've found that the Heil Headset, which is what I use most of the time, requires about 55% gain and 1 on the compression. They seem to run a lot hotter than my Icom hand mic which requires 80% gain and a compression of about 3. Anymore compression than that and I start hearing distortion.
I use the Heil HMM for iCOM only. The Stuck Mic sounds nice but doesn't have power except you have the NF PWR MOD done on it. I makes the HM219 way louder and gives it more bass. My audio settings on the IC-7300 with the Heil HMM Mic. is 18% mic-Gain and 3dB COMP. 120W RF out. Thx gentlemen. 73's de Uncle Günter
Good job Matt !! Many thanks indeed !!
Kindly, could you give us an idea about your bass/treble settings in this video and other videos that don't have so please ?
Many thanks again
The EQ settings (bass/treble) will vary some given your voice. But I have both of mine set fairly high. +4 on the bass and +5 on the treble.
TBW band pass width set to what you intend to use. By ear TX Bass & Treble, set. Frequency "numbers" Cutoff range, Set. Compression, set. Mic gain "adjustments are performed during" while finding these settings to control ALC within range. TX into dummy load having headphones and compare back and forth the onboard monitor to a second receiver in shack if had using the same headphones and when doing this attenuate that receiver if overloading it. Backing down RF power output of IC 7300 can help when testing then listen to your normal spoken voice. If when satisfied still expect voice dynamics changes to be heard when changing into a different TBW widths from your main TBW choice. The Frequency cutoff numbers for each width choice of the three are useful considerations sometimes to readjust as well as Compression level. Your Bass&Treble settings are the same for all three however the finished product is effected again by width differences switched TX to a RX with RF. I choose 2.4Kc for transmit. It has been a long standard for SSB communication. However today you have more vanity going on using 3Kc wide and glide operations. Waste of power and band space like AM.
Excellent demo….might I add an important point….The TX BW, EQ bass, and treble level settings have a direct effect on your ALC and thus power output. Setup your mic gain and processor as demo’d, adjust the TX bass and treble to your liking with a secondary receiver (on board radio monitors are not that accurate) then revisit your ALC and processor settings as they will have moved. Cheers
at last, someone that helped.
This KB9UDK Mark I have a graspy voice I am curious what my tone settings should be
I have 7300 I use
Would this video pretty much apply to the 705? I’m working on getting mine set up, and it’s my first HF rig so I don’t have a 7300 for reference. I’m curious about how using Bluetooth on the 705 might effect ALC and compression too. I’m studying for my General ticket and really looking forward to some of the 705’s cool features.
Betting it would. I set my 705 the same way - following these suggestions - and it sounded great. Checked with monitor & with online SDRs. So now to save up for a 7300 ;-) 73 de W8IJN
why did they make the alc that aggressive on the 7300 ?? i heard from people, that the 7300 doesnt make a good audio with a studio mic for that matter. thats one reason i didnt buy the 7300, beside the QRM problem from side signals.
I have a head set with mic, Heil Pro7. I am not sure but I think start really low.
Anyone finding the ICOM desk mic (SM-30) is really hot? I've got the mic gain turned down to 10% and I'm still hitting the ALC kind of hard.
How do you hear your voice to set it
Are you hooked up to a dummy load, or just using an available frequency? thanks, and great video!
Hopefully he is using am amp and is on during a contest,
I think it is suggested to use a dummy load or your antenna should be really close to 50 Ohms. A mismatch affects the ALC and you might set it a little off then.
More!
Hey Matt, love your videos! In this one, were you using a mic preamp with the Heil, or just the mic straight into the front end?
This is with no pre-amp.
Excellent vidio thanks
the 7300 has an audio scope display, is that display useful in setting mic gain & compression?
It’s better for adjusting your EQ and assessing if you have too much high-end or low-end in your audio.
Salut, j'ai un behringer xm 8500
Basse+ 1 Treble+ 5 comp 6 mic gain 85.
Settings close to mine. 55% Mic gain 1 on the comp Plus 2 treble Plus 1 Bass.
With the stock Mike that comes with the radio your suggestions work like a charm, but with my older Heil Goldline mic I can hardly get the alc meter to move at all. Any suggestions?
Your heil mic as less gain than the default mic, you will need more mic gain to get it up to a reasonable level
What amplifier do you use?
None as of now.

Gotcha. The video where you showed your antenna set up... You included your contacts...I thought surely you were running a amplifier.
Great job!
Thanks 73 de sv1we Theo
Hmm i suggest your still running to hot and the radio audio limiter is working to hard, you don’t need to see a lot of alc to produce loud audio
max
pawer? 80M..
You watt meter is lying to you. The radio will do 100 watts pep without all that audio about 40 on the mic gain and 1 to 3 on the compression depending on your voice and your EQ setup makes a big difference also. You don't need to see that much ALC. Now you are using a heil which always need more audio to work right. You still sound distorted to me though. I use a stock hand microphone and most think I have some big audio setup. Don't need anything else. And to the guy asking about a dummy load .. ALERT RADIO POLICE.. come on.
"Your ALC is going to jump up to 75% to 85% of that meter." I only see it jumping to about 50%??
The ALC meter is aligned to the red line on the screen, might be tough to see. Blow up the video full screen.
@@K0LWC Got it! Thanks for the response.
@@K0LWC Hey Matt, I just made a contact with you on 40 meters via FT8! KN6CLP.
Thanks for the contact!
@@K0LWC Same! 73
Honestly, Icom forget to rename the compressor to limiter. A compressor does not kick in at voice peaks but lifts quieter parts
Actually we call it a Compressor for short. A true compressor does both and it's full name is a " Compressor Limiter". The 7300 has a basic compressor that uses preset algorithms to accomplish both.
Helpful video but it must be said that Heil microphone sounds absolutely horrible. That's simply not clean audio in any universe. How is it that the stock mic sounds better than what this man is using here?
I am totally blind, so boy do I hate these menus and these touch screens when did radio become television! It’s just a question. Usually you can hear the sticks you don’t need your meters. They’re nice, but you don’t need them. It’s like all you say people who become broken and forgotten what radio is
Great video! de W2CSI
