I've just discovered this video and it really interested me because we moved into a house 7 months ago, which had some similar challenges. In our case, we found that there was a bare minimum of wall sockets, backed up by a multitude of extension leads and an old consumer unit, so we had to fully rewire - and that was before we got to the kitchen. The walls were covered with wood panelling, like your kitchen ceiling but painted white - quite a job to get them off and the walls replastered. Still we are nearing the end of our renovation now and enjoying having a house with more spacious rooms than the 1999 one which we moved from. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

I do really love that flooring downstairs could you please let me know what colour it is and where you recommend getting the floor from? Thanks!
Thanks! It’s Karndean Van Gogh French Oak. It’s been very hard wearing. It can scratch so it’s worth being careful but definitely less easy to scratch than laminate flooring.
FYI, the reason the cables are not chased behind the coving is that when they installed those newer sockets, they would use a tool to chase up behind the coving to get the cable up stairs and to the circuit.

We've just had an offer on a 1960's house so might be running into a lot of the same issues. Would be great to have an idea of cost for various pieces of work and where you benefited from doing work yourself or felt it more sensible to get a professional.
Thanks. I’m fairly handy (built a garden office, see my other videos) so can do a fair amount and am happy to push myself to try new things. Anything with that remit I attempted but anything that needs signing off, I went with builders, electricians, plumbers, etc. I haven’t worked out costs but I got quotes for everything from several people and chose the ones I felt would do the best job. Hope this helps and good luck with your purchase.

I’ve intentionally not looked too much into the costs as I think it would upset me 😂 I can say that we did save a lot before we moved and we didn’t have to pay stamp duty (which we were banking on) as it was still reduced when we moved last year. The house had also been reduced and we made a low offer, which was accepted. I think the stars aligned in our favour.

Thanks 😊 The acoustic insulation was from Knoff. Product code 143388 from Wickes. Due to various economic factors it doubled in price between when I insulated the floors in the kids rooms to when I did the office, from £36 per roll to £72 per roll. It’s definitely worth it though and in my mind, it makes good sense if you have all the carpets up, etc. Plus it’ll make the house a bit warmer. Good luck in your renovations.
I did leave my garden room behind, yes. I didn’t want to move it (even though I’m fairly sure I could have done) as it added a decent amount of value to the house. The pandemic gave us a chance to think about what we wanted to do and where we wanted to be so we opted to move closer to family. We have no regrets about moving and agree it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

Just a question: do you have any deckhead cable penetrations that you may recommend for use in a house, as i wang to run my ethernet cables from the understairs compartment up theough the floor-plate and across to the first floor airing cupboard before routing them up into the loft-space for PoE cameras. I didn’t use any conduit (if that’s what you mean) but any flexible electrical conduit would work if you wanted to add more runs in the future. But I’m not working with steel or metal of any kind in the main framework of my house.

My brother still lives in the house my parents had built in 1965/66. He still has the original wired in clock.

That might be but didn’t explain why they weren’t chased for the last few inches just above the socket. Just odd!
