As a mother myself I know what it takes of my body and mind to carry a child birth, nurse and care for them .i can't imagine having a child every year with only a few months between. It's hard work, tiring and selfless. I work in the animal field with both domesticated and wild animal rehab and while I advocate sterilization of our domestic dogs and cats so it's beautiful to me to see our wildlife breed and raise their babies to carry on their species for our planet. Educating people on the need of every animal and plant to this world having impact on so much in nature. We need to gain more education to insure animal survival, especially in our harsh polar regions. I thank all that suffer horrible elements to gain the studies needed to ensure life.

This is honestly my dream job. I absolutely adore seals and I’m incredibly fascinated by them. If I wasn’t so horrendous at math I’d be a biologist by now lol 😂 😭 I’ll just settle for volunteering for marine conservation centers when I move out 😅
Dont give up,start small again and work your way up to more difficult levels,play math games as well and then once you are ready move forward
I'm sure you could get some internships with seal places. Also is one of the least mathsy parts of science so that's pretty good😂

I mean seals don't have the same sexual maturity as humans (it happens much earlier than humans) so not really.
@@William_Porter I get that. I mean if a seal has a pup when they're five years old, and that seal has a pup when they're five years old, and so on, this 31 year old seal mum could easily have great great great great grandchildren at this point.
@@Phlebas Oh I see what you meant now, and probably. They seem to come from a long lineage of really good parenting so it wouldn't surprise me. I wonder if how they raise their pups effects how their pups raise their pups, it seems it does since they've been so successful compared to other seals.

The mortality rate is usually between 6-22% so exceptionally low for a pinniped.

Now I know why human mothers came up with the “eating for two” excuse: with maternal and infant mortality being prevalent in many places in the old days, some human mothers looked at seal mothers and went, “Look at what seals do, and they know that life is uncertain and short.”
These are my favorite seals. I love them all. Yes even leopard seals. I didn't know their lives were that hard. I knew they were difficult but goodness....only 20% survive? 😭 I want to adopt some!
If legal I looked it up I cant get a answer if it's legal or not some say it's legal some say it's illegal so I'm not sure I'm hoping it is cause in the future I'm wanting either a weddell or a harp

They aren't hunted. These seals are in Antarctica, not the Arctic. Weddell seals have no natural predators.

As long as they keep their mouths closed I doubt they stink that much. I think the wetness, their teeth and their body weight would make you more uncomfortable.

This is actually a good study. You could study and have projections, judging who will survive and who will not. Then, when pups start reaching condition that would make a 99% mortality rate and low successful parental rate, they can take them after weaning for potential "domestication" like in a zoo. You can't take too much of the population, though, because a significant population absence could potentially affect outcomes. It's a fascinating study.
