  • On the 18th of May 2012, Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall hosted a dinner at Buckingham Palace for foreign sovereigns and royalty in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
    Here the couple greet their guests, Their Serene Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Monaco.
    ***Sidenote: In regards to protocol... There appear to be two trains of thought when it comes to what should determine who should be bowed to/curtsied to. There are those who say that because the style of Royal Highness is higher than that of Serene Highness, Princess Charlene was right to curtsy to the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. Then there are those who say that because Charlene is the wife of a Royal Head of State and a Sovereign Consort, she does in fact outrank both the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall and that they should infact bow/curtsy to her. Then there are those who believe that due to her position as a sovereign consort, Princess Charlene should not curtsy to the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, but nor should they bow or curtsy to her due to their styles as Royal Highnesses.
    I am of the opinion that as a sovereign consort, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall should in fact bow/curtsy to Princess Charlene, regardless of their higher styles. So to me, this is a break in protocol.

  • @sertuliky
    @sertuliky 3 года назад +8

    They can’t really be compared; Royal Highness and Serene Highness are used totally separately by different royal families. They’re to all intents and purposes simply a different way of expressing the word “Highness”.
    The royal families of Monaco and Liechtenstein use Serene Highness for all their royal family members; other royal families use Royal Highness for all royal family members who are not the king or queen.
    Thus, if Prince Charles of the UK, a royal highness, met Albert II of Monaco, a serene highness, then Albert II technically outranks Charles because he is a reigning monarch and Charles an heir. Similarly, if Princess Stephanie of Monaco met Prince Andrew of the UK you could argue they’re on an equal footing as they’re both younger children of reigning sovereigns.

      No. A Serene Highness is a lower rank. It is indifferent in this respect if a personality is a head of state or not. Royal Highnesses do not bow or curtsey to heads of states who are not royal. If a pesonality has a royal or a princely rank, they follow royal protocol. Royal Highnesses have a higher status then Serene Highnesses.

While Albert of Monaco, as the sovereign, can’t bow his head to Charles even if he wanted to, because that would lower the national dignity of Monaco. The couple did this to show respect to the heir to the British throne, while avoiding a sovereign to bow to an heir
