    I couldn’t agree more with the exception of Aaron.
    The original Aaron was alluring, there was something about him. Jonathan and Lindsay looked so so so cute together and to me their chemistry was off the charts!!!! Aaron absolutely had a personality in the original. He cared a lot about his mum, he talks about how he’s had to he the man of the house to Cady because his dad left or died or something and that he loves his sports too. I couldn’t name any facts about this Aaron with the exception of his name is Aaron and he dated Regina. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Renee Rapp, Auli'i Cravalho, Avantika and Jaquel Spivey definitely stole the show with their colourful, memorable performances. While I love Angourie Rice, I feel that she was miscast in this role, primarily because it's clear that she doesn't have the same musical background as many of her castmates. Cady also comes across as blandly forgettable in what's supposed to be HER story.

      Yeah, I think both Angourie and Chris were miscast in this movie. I get why they went with Chris since they were always going to cut out Aaron's songs, but how are you not going to try and get a better singer for the lead role?? And respectfully, Angourie isn't even popular enough that they cast her for ticket sales alone.

    • @sueswang_
      @sueswang_ 7 месяцев назад +2

      Angourie casted as Cady reminded me of Victoria Justice as Tori Vega. Like they are talented and can sing, but nowhere near as incredible as the other cast. They get over shadowed. Also, from what I heard of her songs, they sound emotionless and dumbed down....

    While I'm glad that they got rid of Coach Carr being a predator, and taking advantage of his underage students, I wish that they'd given Jon Hamm something funny to say or do. Same goes for Jenna Fischer and Ashley Park, though I liked the small reference to Principal Duvall and Ms Norbury being in a romantic relationship.

    I also think the movie could have talked more about Regina being a little thicker than other versions, even before the Kalteen bars in this version. They also could have touched upon how “thick” is in for some folks, but “thickER” (aka THIS Regina after the bars) isn't AS in. Size inclusion and people’s views are also on a whole spectrum.
    We could have explored about how beauty standards have shifted and you don't have to be super thin… while ALSO hammering in how losing agency over your body (people don't often discuss how utterly frightening and traumatizing it would be to have your own body change in ways you don't know how or why).
    Another aspect from the Og movie that was sorely missed here is that moment Regina says “these (sweatpants) are all that fit me right now.” Rachel made her SO vulnerable in that one moment, you almost feel really bad for her.
    Regina’s meanness could have ALSO been mirrored in her size-shaming (be it height OR weight) and having that come full circle when she had her own downfall.
    And then the gym scene could have talked about body positivity and how fleeting and conditional it can be for some, but shouldn't be.

    I really feel like I was the only one who doesn’t like Avantika’s Karen. I found her to be cartoonishly dumb. The original Karen was much more believable and had much better one liners. I never thought she was acting or trying too hard. Avantika’s singing was also a problem for me. I can tell she is not vocally trained and the studio did most of the work. I also feel they darkened her instead of casting a dark skin Indian girl to play her. I was shocked when I saw the actress outside of the movie. Renee Rapp’s voice was the highlight of the movie. I liked all of her vocal performances. I also liked the new Damien and especially his voice. I also throughly disliked how much Cady focused on him Aaron and only Aaron. In the original it felt more organic. Overall I could’ve lived without this remake and the rest of remakes Hollywood keeps forcing down our throats.

    I don't think the point with Janis ever was that people shouldn't assume someone's sexuality, bc that's not what happened. Regina didn't assume, she misinterpreted her and when Janis went against it Regina just kept going and saying the opposite of what Janis says bc it was just funny to her to make those mean comments (even tho in the book Regina says she's a lesbian bc she can't admit she's a lesbian herself, but that's a different topic).
    In 2004 it makes sense that someone saying she's gay would bother her so much and make her rage against Regina, by how society was about the topic back then. In these days tho... I don't think it would be a good motivation for the entirety of her character and arc with Regina, with how open we are to it. Not like people saying you're something you're not isn't still annoying and can get bad results, it's wrong obviously, but in 2004 saying that specific thing was way way worse than it is now, it implied much more so it was a way worse thing to say and that would make you feel way worse then than now. So at least you see yourself in a Kit Connor situation for example, or worse, which Janis didn't have, her reaction and relationship with Regina wouldn't fit that well, can't really imagine a 2024 movie that is happening in 2024 inside of it too using as an argument for an entire character motivation "she says I'm gay so I hate her so much that this movie will be my entire plan revenge for it", I feel like it would just fit if the bullying was way bigger (as I said, something like what happened to Kit) but for a movie that lasts this and a plot like this, I don't think it would be a smart decision to do all that extra plot, so it makes sense they changed the reason why Janis and Regina stopped being such good friends and hate each other as much as they do today. And the message of that story is actually just about rumours, not sexuality, and the rumours part works in here, even if they changed what rumour it was all about.

    It was so unnecessary to remake Mean Girls. Don’t get me wrong, I like all the actors, they’re all talented, but the og is so ingrained in the cultural zeitgeist and quoted so often that it’s hard to see new actors in these roles. Like, if I say “that is the ugliest f’ing skirt I’ve ever seen”-most of us heard Rachel McAdams’ voice bouncing around our noggins.

    I definitely agree that for most of us who saw the original movie or the Broadway musical, that “What’s Wrong with Me” wasn't necessary since WE knew who Gretchen was.
    But for any newer audiences seeing it for the very first time… it was really THE only insight into her character.
    She and Karen didn't even get their introductions from the original cut of “Meet the Plastics”.
    Aside from her solo, there's almost nothing to Gretchen in this movie, character insight-wise.

    Aaron being “just a pretty face” in the OG Mean Girls is literally the point of his character. In stereotypical, male led comedies there is very little given to the female love interests, they’re blank slates with hot bods/pretty faces and are used as moral compasses or just plot points. Here the genders are subverted making Aaron the Helen of Troy of the movie. It’s honestly genius because we don’t need to know more, that’s not the point, and I don’t think enough is done with his character in the new MG to justify changing this point. He’s an accessory to the stronger female characters, a motivational tool more than a character and I always thought it was so clever that his character was utilized in this way and was such a cool flip on the trope.

    Honestly it's a bit disheartening to see so many people say that Janis canonically being a lesbian "misses the point of her character." In the original, she wasn't assumed to be a lesbian because of the way she dresses. It was because Regina spread that rumor after Regina started dating a guy and Janis supposedly got very jealous and obsessed. That's when she started ostracizing her, and she spread this rumor before Janis even started dressing the way we see her do in the movie. There was no lesson about judging a book by its cover in regards to Janis' sexuality because the lesbian rumor wasn't born of assumptions based on looks, it was a choice that Regina made. The rumor also wasn't restricted to just her liking girls but also paints her as predatory and obsessive. She can still have the same arc regardless of her sexuality. Many queer people actually relate to Janis because being bullied for being gay before even figuring out that they're gay themselves is a pretty common experience. The interpretation that Janis is a lesbian with comphet is just as valid as the interpretation that she's straight. Neither is right or wrong, they're just different interpretations based on the audience members' different perspectives.

    • @creature_maria
      @creature_maria 7 месяцев назад +3

      Right? This is the second video I've seen about the movie that makes that point, but the film could still have the message about spreading malicious rumours that aren't true, or even an equally valuable message about bullying someone for something that is true -- and like you said, even if being gay weren't the focus, being seen as a weird creepy stalker could definitely still get someone bullied this day and age; maybe there could even be a fake woke thing with people being mad at her for "reinforcing the stereotype that lesbians are predators", when it's actually the rumours doing that. It's not Janis being a lesbian that's the problem, it's the lacklustre writing, and making her straight doesn't have to be the solution to that.

    • @ohood1788
      @ohood1788 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@creature_maria I wholeheartedly agree. Especially because Janis was so clearly intentionally queer coded in the 2004 movie. I thought her ending up with Kevin G was very random, even when I watched it as a kid, like there was no build up to it. It just felt like the movie saying "hey everyone look she's not a lesbian after all, isn't it great that she's actually normal?" Anyway, I feel like saying Janis doesn't work unless she's straight is a very reductive take on such a well-written, nuanced character. I mean when I watch the og movie I interpret Janis as a lesbian and her arc still works just fine. I think not making her mean is a far bigger crime to her character than anything regarding her sexuality.
      Also just wanted to point out that this movie didn't randomly make this up. It's an adaptation of the broadway musical and in the broadway show, Tina Fey gave the actress (Barrett Wilbert Weed) the choice on how she wanted to play Janis and she chose to make her gay.
      Fun fact: Reneé Rapp also plays Regina George as gay because she said that's how she views her.

      @Gabry4777 6 месяцев назад

      @@ohood1788I agreed BUT on your last comment which is actually stupid:
      1) NOWHERE in the original film homophobia is present.
      2) If they made her gay, they would have CONFIRMED Regina's rumors, completely missing the point that false rumors can ruin someone's life. Her being straight is a good ending. Not because being a lesbian is wrong, but because Regina was!

    • @ohood1788
      @ohood1788 6 месяцев назад

      @@Gabry4777 I honestly don't know what you're even referring to with your first point. As for the second, Regina's rumors were harmful because she painted Janis as creepy, obsessive and predatory. It portrayed her in a negative light and that's what ruined her life. The way Regina told people Janis was a lesbian wasn't in a neutral way, it was in a way that painted her being a lesbian as something bad and morally dubious like "she'll creep on us in changing rooms." So Janis simply being gay would not confirm Regina's rumors, but Janis being a gay creep would. Regina would still be wrong in this case because Janis is not a weird predator. I never said her being a straight is a bad ending, it's just not the only interpretation.

    While Renees voice is expectedly great, the character of Regina was so badly done. She was just, as you say, grumpy all the time, snarky and just plain rude to everyone. It wasnt realistic or logical why this person would even be the IT girl. The audience was told she was the it-girl, we were told she is the "apex predator", but there was absolutely nothing shown why anyone would want to hang with her much less be fascinated by her. Sure, she is rich, she is pretty... as are Karen and Gretchen. Og Regina was manipulative, Renee just barks.. og Regina was fashion forward, Renee wears ill-fitted Shein.
    Also, Gen-Z remakes tend to be fascinated with villains and try to make them protagonists but fail to understand what made them great characters in the first place. In Mean Girls Musical, Renee is the main character, you can see by posters and trailers.. the issue is that Regina is a bully, homophobe, misogynistic, sl*t shaming, fat shaming,.. and we cant have that for Renee, cant we? We cant have our main character and new it-celebrity be bad person. So they had to mellow her down to barking and mean stares so she doesnt get cancelled lmfao.

I missed the opportunity when it was officially on Broadway. Plus the OG broadway cast.
    I agree with most of what you said, but I disagree about Aaron Samuels. I did not like the new version/actor. I don't find him attractive and I thought even though there wasn't much shown in 2004, Aaron was more than a pretty boy to me. He was a sweet, non-judgemental character that was down to earth. He told Cady that she shouldn't be intentionally fail in math, he enjoyed soccer, he was genuinely a nice guy that avoided the drama of Regina George. One thing that bothered me.
    Janis is called “Pyro Lez.”
    It’s just so TOOTHLESS. Like… how is that EVEN mean???
    Yes, we KNOW the ‘D’ word is a slur, especially if you aren't queer (probably a lesbian specifically, that’s their word they can use how they see fit, imo), BUT THAT’S THE POINT, LOL.
    When Gretchen said it in the movie, she said it with such disgust... It was really frickin MEAN!!!
    Their restraint is their own downfall.
    There WERE things that didn’t need to be there, like racial stuff (especially since in the original movie there were no ethnic students of consequence besides Kevin, but he didn’t face any racist slurs and most of the racial jokes were Black or Asian), but trying to make EVERYTHING perfectly okay… completely ruined the point.

    For the Aaron point… I felt like he had a personality in the original film. It was just subtle. It came through more during the party scenes and the moment he realizes Regina was cheating again.
    Otherwise… I don't mind that he wasn't some SUPER STANDOUT guy in terms of skill, ability, or personality.
    These are teenagers. Sometimes you fell in “love” JUST because somebody was cute and nice to you, lmao. I know that was ME 🤣
    The same could be said of Aaron himself. We never REALLY know why he liked Regina in the first place. He later shames Cady for being “a clone of Regina…” WHOM HE DATED AND GOT BACK WITH AFTER SHE CHEATED/DUMPED HIM THE FIRST TIME, lol. (That wasn’t me shouting at you, Serena. It’s actually me shouting at him for criticizing Vay for being the thing he CLEARLY was interested in. Why was it okay for Regina to be what she was, but not Cady? He says in the musical he liked Cady for who she was… but he STILL got back with Regina…)
    It’s clear he was mostly into her looks in the original. I DO think that the Broadway musical implies he liked feeling cool when he was with her, which gave a LITTLE insight into it, but if course they cut ALL his songs and singing parts in this movie so… 🤷🏾‍♂️

    Saying whether someone is "attractive enough" is such bullshit like beauty standards are already a subjective construct anyways

    I think the offensive jokes is what kinda made the Og funny..like even if she got backlash for it, dont make a new one. Bc u should already know the second one wont do anywhere near as good as the OG mean girls

    I saw it and although I liked Renee Rapp as Regina and that they had some good callbacks, it could’ve been better. It wasn’t as funny and they cut down on the songs which was a bummer.

      Also they should’ve cut the whole pretending to be bad at math for a guy because no one does that anymore 😂

    It's an American thing. We say whatever we want. The Aaron want handsome to me either so it confused me. Majority rule? This was obviously Renee Rapps movie. Double feature the OG and the remake. The inhale joke was funny af.
