Fun fact that glossed over: Ashley Park, Emily in Paris, actually played Gretchen on Broadway for the musical of Mean Girls. Which is more so why she was featured in the movie. Her being the French teacher is sort of a double knudge to her personal resume.
As a fan of the musical, some of the songs that I felt were really funny or important were cut. Renée Rapp is my queen, she released her debut album earlier this year. She played Regina on broadway when she was only 19 and she KILLED it. She is a queer icon and she can bully me any day. The songs that I feel best translated to the film version were “Sexy” and “Someone Gets Hurt”. Ashley Park was a cameo as well she played the original Gretchen on broadway. Aaron Samuels isn’t crazy buff and looks like he hasn’t slept for weeks which as someone born in the year 2000 I can confirm that is the male beauty standard for gen z’s.
I was really shocked that they cut "More Is Better"!! I felt like that was a really important song for Cady and Aaron in the musical. But I think songs like the house party one or Damien's song weren't super necessary to the plot. That said, totally agree about Renee, loved seeing Ashley, and I think Aaron Samuels was conventionally attractive but had less personality in this movie for whatever reason.
Really there’s no reason for this movie to exist. Removing/changing some language to appease today’s cultural sensibilities is one of the reasons why. The movie is a time capsule for us old high schoolers of 2004, and it was so popular because that’s really how kids talked back then. it’s not a product of or for gen z. Sure they added music, which I’m still curious about, but it just doesn’t work for most fans as a 2024 story.
I cannot believe it's been 20 years since the 2004 one, I was 14 when it came out and I was obsessed with Lindsay Lohan, as a young teenager I thought she was just beautiful and I wanted to look like her lol
Nick’s side expressions crack me up. He’s so cute. The stage musical was very underwhelming. The fact that they could cut 14 songs doesn’t surprise me at all because I thought the whole show was quite forgettable. If you both liked Renee, you should check out her interview with Jennifer Hudson. They sing Dangerously in Love and she sounds amazing on it.
I agree. The stage musical was not good. So I was very surprised they were making the movie. Then when I saw how they were marketing it, I realized it was a cash grab for non-musical theatre audiences. In my theater and from reviews I’ve heard, everyone groaned every time there was another song starting.
I just bought this movie on DVD, because I loved the original movie. But, I thought there were way too many musical numbers that distracted from the original story. We only got bits and pieces of the original movie. With that said, I did like the actress who played Regina, and also Janice. But, I found the girls who played gretchen and karen weak images of the original roles. None of these girls were as good as the original mean girls. Especially gretchen and karen who seemed parodies. As for Damian. I dont think he was as good as the original Damian. But, he was certainly likeable. And the closest to the role he was playing. Didnt care for this version of Aaron. The original guy seemed like a dude two girls would fight over. But, not this guy. None of the boys portrayed in this movie were remotely interesting. Kind of like these girls could do better. And this Aaron seemed more like someone Gretchen or Karen would date, and not Regina. She was too big for him. I also felt kinda jipped that they cut the iconic jingle bell rock song. So they could do yet another lame social media jab. Overall it was ok. I found some of the musical numbers bizarre, and not something teens would do. And a couple went on way too long. Like the Regina/Aaron kiss. Get to the point!! Weird. But, I agree, its fun and watchable. But, nowhere near as good as the original mean girls. I also think lohan 17:49 should have been cadys mom. 17:49
This review is Fetch. Hollywood is kinda Mean Girls. Women gotta look a certain way and be a certain weight to sit at the strong lead table 😂 unfortunately
Viola Davis, Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer, Cate Blanchette, Helena Bonham Carter, Jodi Foster, Kathy Bates, there’s more. Hollywood has typically been dismissive of older actresses, heavy actresses, and actors/actresses of color but a lot has changed even in the last decade. Love that we get to see some of these ladies do their best work since the 80s or see them break out even though they may not fit the mold.
@@BB-ed4om or how about Pam Grier, in the 70s. There have been exceptions, throughout time. But I think people who know, know what I'm talking about. Loved Woman King.
His costar in the Amazon series is much more classically handsome or even pretty by modern standards. Perhaps they didn't want to cast someone too attractive.
The girl who plays Regina's mom is Busy Phillips!! Her sister is Bijou Phillips and their parents were in the band the Mama's and the Papa's. Also Busy was in White Chicks!!
I always think reboots like this are weird because millennials really aren’t that old. Looking at the box office and adjusted for inflation is did about the same as the 2004. What will be interesting is who actually saw it. I agree they should have done a rated R version because I bet millennials saw this more than Gen Z. Gen Z isn’t going to the movies like other generations. They also aren’t into the same things like Marvel, Star Wars and Harry Potter based off the audiences the last few years. I think studios should really try to give this new generation something for them.
What the Color Purple is to Generation X is what Mean Girls is to Millennials/Gen Z. Both classics that were made into Broadway musicals that were then transferred to the silver screen. The original leads of the musicals reprise their lead roles in the movie musical versions, and the lead actresses of the movie versions both make an appearance in their respective movies 😊 Can't wait to see which movie turned musical is next up😀 😂
For a musical, the songs were not memorable at all. Also it was almost word for word on a lot of it. Wouldn’t have been mad if it was just a straight remake
Agreed!! I love musicals & usually there’s at least a couple songs I’m humming afterwards…I saw Mean Girls earlier today & there’s not one song that really stood out for me.
I had never seen the original. My wife and I had seen posters for the movie, but nothing suggested it was a musical. We were both very confused when it started. We both thought it was terrible, but like the movie Malignant or Get Out, I thought it was hilarious. It was even more fun to watch her roll her eyes every time they started singing. It's not that she doesn't like musicals, just not this. The lyrics to some of the songs are funny, but I doubt most highschoolers know the "animal, vegetable, or mineral" game, and it felt weird seeing women that are clearly adults playing teens and dancing/dressing provocatively.
I am a huge “mean girls” fan and this may come across as blasphemous, but I think the musical improved on several parts of the story. They really let the ending breathe and the story is better for it.
I actually thought a musical remake of Mean Girls could have been good. The movie was well cast and funny in parts but what doomed it for me was the songs. However, nothing on the pop music charts these days appeals to me so that could be the reason. If this movie was made 10 years ago, I may have enjoyed it more. I did like High School Musical and Hairspray, but I also liked that era of pop music which influenced the songs, both from a written and production standpoint. I did like The Greatest Showman as well but that musical wasn't trying to mimic the charts. Regina had a unique voice whose numbers got my attention, but at the end of the day, I can't remember one single song from this movie despite just watching it last night. I thought Jenna Fischer and Busy Phillips were inspired casting because they looked so much like their screen daughters.
@@jecarlin I considered giving the broadway versions a listen but honestly, the songs were so terrible, I don't think it would make that much of a difference.
As far as target audience, I don’t think it was for just the elder millennials, if at all. The young fan base for the Broadway musical was rabid for it when it was on stage, and movie musicals tend to get a dedicated audience from the ones who know the play. So I think it was green lit with the intention of it being for the theatre kids, but they saw an opportunity for a cash grab with the younger TikTok audience.
Hey Guys, big fan of the original but i just dont see the point of the update and i have heard like u said the music is forgettable....I feel this will replace in peoples minds what Mean Girls the movie is and the younger audience wont see the original would wud be a shame as its such a classic..Thanks for the review guys..I like Lindsey Lohan, i kind of assumed some of the O.G characters wud be the moms of the Plastics which is a shame😊U seem to have liked it so Maybe i will wait till it streams to watch..
Why can't both of them coexist? I definitely don't think the musical replaces the OG movie as a classic especially because it's an adaptation of the stage production. I think both of them can co-exist and the OG is better for that traditional high school movie and the new version is better when you want something campy to watch.

“Mean Girls 2024” has been gradually losing momentum at the box office. The reasons have been discussed at length. Meanwhile true sleeper hit romcom “Anyone but You” has held steady well into its run! making $103.9 million as of 26 January worldwide so far on a $25 million budget. * Spoilers Ahead * From a romcom superfan-of romcoms from the 1930s to the present. I love “Anyone but You”, and here are numerous things I like about this romcom for this new era and so popular now with Gen Z and a true box office success! 1. Director Will Gluck Easter eggs for “Easy A”: Ojai T-shirt and numerous shots of oranges. “Easy A” is set in Ojai, California and Gluck tried to include many oranges in scenes. 2. The meet cute scene at the cafe (one of many romcom tropes I fully embrace in the film). 3. Bea’s sex-like gymnastics above Ben on the plane after stealing his cookie. 4. The use of “Unwritten”, beginning in the airline scene. Which becomes a glorious leitmotif song for the movie-and a TikTok phenomenon! 5. Gorgeous Alexandra Shipp and Hadley Robinson as the loving wedding couple-indeed, all the couples in the movie including the parents. 6. GaTa as the loyal, clever, irrepressible best friend. 7. Ben’s vulnerabilities of being older, fit-looking but “hot girl fit” aka no cardio aka no endurance. 8. The romantic yacht dance Bea and Ben share, “Titanic”, and the night harbor scene. The Opera House backdrop to our two lovers on a buoy is iconic. As is the helicopter rescue to the song “Unwritten”-followed by that sexy shower scene. 9. The audacious leap off the cliff leading to the second chopper airlift of Ben to the Opera House for that exhilarating declaration of love and kissing and Bea saying, “Tomorrow, running for Mr. No Cardio”. 10. The whole end scene done to “Unwritten. 11. The other songs besides leitmotif tune “Unwritten”, as well as the film’s music score… 12. The heady romance of it all!
