4 min in and I can already tell that you're showing us the real deal and not skipping the boring or challenging shit. Thanks bro. I'm about 1 month out from buying my new Motor and im trying to learn everything I can before
learning to this yourself is "satisfaction" dont stop making videos.. this video is what the community needs, im learning from you by watching these videos and helping my Bro whos a mechanic
super old video - thx for posting it. Loosening head bolts is the reverse of tightening. You start outside and go in to remove. To install you go center and move out. You did it backwards removing. Thank you for the video.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I’ve heard from many sources that the head gaskets go bad around 150k. My 06 WRX is at 130k. I’ve also had cylinder 4 misfires for years but the car seemingly runs fine, just have to clear the codes each time I drive it. Dealer said block needed to be replaced years ago but I refuse to believe that, said that at 60k miles. The car is great to drive just seemingly endless issues with it.
Yeah I usually see them go bad around 100k. Your could be something else because your catalytic converter should be clogged. Unless your catless. Glad it helped!
I did my TB on my 2007 OB at 92K. Man by inspecting on the parts. I think I can do another 60k more lol. I dont abuse my car. Anyway great video broh.. My next project is the clutch .. Ez peachy Lemon squeezy.
Great video, to many adds though . I just wanted to brush up on my subie head removal and there was half a dozen adds .... Doing a fresh up job on my 04 Fxt 5spd and just wanted a quick run down
I’m in the process of doing one of these and I used my induction heater on the exhaust cover bolts. I got every one out except the one I didn’t use it on. That one snapped.
Hey Bud, Thank you for uploading this video, its super helpful right now. We did head gaskets on a 2012 Impreza Turbo-charged WRX and after re-assembling everything, we have a phantom oil leak. We think maybe that we sprung a leak at one of the banjo bolts. Its driving us crazy, we have cameras snaked through to see if we can see it. I wanted to ask you if you have had issues with these engines in the past, with leaking oil. (On passenger side cylinder head) Thanks Bro
Hey Jabo, I see you're using what looks like a Milwaukee M12 1/4" impact driver and I'm wondering if you recommend this for all around car diy jobs. I imagine it is powerful enough and very handy for most things but do you think it's necessary to have something with more power? Do you recommend the 1/4 over the 1/2? Thx for the great video!
I’m looking at a 2005 saabaru which has the same engine as a wrx and I’m worried about having to pull the engine for just some head gaskets. Would you happen to know about that year, btw the engine only has 80k (Allegedly)
Any head gasket on a 4 cylinder Subaru is going to be the same general process wether it is turbo or not. It can be done in the car but taking the engine out is the easiest way to do head gaskets on a Subaru.
Hi I don’t know if you can help me whit this I have ej25 and when I started to pull out the big bolt, I can’t put the timing belt like even whit the marks on the block I don’t know what I need to do
I know this is an old comment but I'm doing my HG on a JDM dual avcs and looking for the right HG and it looks like this guy has the wrong one for his car but the right one for my car. But idk how well all the holes really need to line up. I'd imagine it's kind of important
Hey so thinking about picking up a 2002 wrx for 1,500 I know it's an interference motor and it allegedly bent a valve would you suggest just getting a new motor from the jdm site for 600 or just rebuild ?
No because im doing it by hand. If be a tool with high speed than yes. Wont even come close to making it uneven. You would have to be there in one spot for a day to make it uneven
idk why im so excited to pull the engine from my subaru and replace gaskets and all! lmao working on cars my whole life and never had the honor to work on these engines.
I'm finding it to be right now. I just don't have the space or tools. One guy that wants to learn engines, I replaced valve cover gaskets, that cleared the rough idle for maybe a hour and now its back to rough idle. I'm sure its a bad head gasket, wheel bearing out. Power steering pump out, and heater core gone. Also replaced thermostat. Have to replace the housing as it still has a small leak.

Im 15 i love the Subaru wrx sti 2007
Im watching this video to learn every thing about the car before i get it after 5 or 4 years
Better hurry now that Subaru aren't making them anymore.

When replacing Subaru head gaskets you should check the block for warpage with a straight level
You should. But depending upon how severe the overheating issue is
I’m in the process of doing one of these and I used my induction heater on the exhaust cover bolts. I got every one out except the one I didn’t use it on. That one snapped.
I guess it's kind of off topic but do anybody know a good place to stream new tv shows online ?
@Ishaan Dane i watch on flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Ishaan Dane try Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)

The cylinder head using has stress cracks. Glad it helped!
49:12 Banjo bolt part numbers
Was there a particular way that you orientated the cams before you put the caps on? Or is it just kind of stick them in there?
Just stick them in there. There is a process when timing so you don't open the wrong valves and hit a piston.
Damn bro se antojaron the bag is Skiwnkles in the background 🤣

on the banjo bolts . on my car the they where in between the circular part and block, not on the banjo bolt itself
You did not show how to remove the phasers. Other than the cam removal those are the most critical components separate from SOHC EJ's.
how many sensors engine have?

How to u clean the oil gullies for heads? Like what if debris in them ?
Brake cleaner and air.
And thanks for your support 🙏!
shouldnt it be better to torque to spec the cam gear bolts?
Does the torque specs apply for a ej20
How do I determine which side of the head gasket goes to the head and block?
One of the sides says "up" and "up" Goes towards the head

What grit did you use to sand the engine block surface
220

Does the 2010 xt have leaking head gaskets? I'm see oil below with smoke from under the hoid when driving up Hill's
They are know for the heads cracking but most likely its a gasket
Do you know the torque for the camshaft cap bolts ?
Yes can you answer this please?
Subaru forums. They will tell you everything you ever need to know.
what head gasket did you use? i have an ej205 jdm single avcs. just like yours
I know this is an old comment but I'm doing my HG on a JDM dual avcs and looking for the right HG and it looks like this guy has the wrong one for his car but the right one for my car. But idk how well all the holes really need to line up. I'd imagine it's kind of important

I would just get another motor and have that one as a spare
@@JaboTheMechanic thanks!
You are welcome
Yo the way you're cleaning the head surface, ain't that a possible way to have un even surface?
No because im doing it by hand. If be a tool with high speed than yes. Wont even come close to making it uneven. You would have to be there in one spot for a day to make it uneven
@@JaboTheMechanic ok ty for the info,
Do you open up your air conditioning circuit when you do this? Lose the gas?
No not usually
why is the round coolant cap on the expansion tank? Shouldn't the winged one be on there not the round?
He did not post the link in the below :(
What are the main reasons that head gaskets go out the way they do? Is it a driver error, or just the engine itself?
Can you be more specific
Its both. Lack of maintenance and a poor quality design on the gasket itself
How long would take that job ?
Where are you located? Also how much does a job like this run for?
i love how he skiped by how to take off those 10mm hex bolts that hold that cam sprocket on...
I have another video on that
Put a glob of valve grinding compound in the hole, insert hex and bam, reduces stripping of those pesky bolts by about 85%
Hey bro how much would you charge for this job
Man mo wonder everyone hates this job...seems alot different than some of the other cars out there that have videos of head gasket replacement.
Beauty mate.. thanks heaps!
Glad it helped!
idk why im so excited to pull the engine from my subaru and replace gaskets and all! lmao working on cars my whole life and never had the honor to work on these engines.
Best believe you are going to work on this car Alot. 😆
@@JaboTheMechanic yeah i know its a fun car but its a drama queen. thanks for the detailed videos tho very very helpful!
Wanna help me with mine then? lol. I think its a pain in the arse. Got a 05 subaru impreza 2.5rs.
That one is not bad at all

What if you dumped 4 caps off 1 side??
You need to make sure that they go in the same place. They are shimmed
Skipped right past taking the cam gears off, the part i need, thanks.
I have another video on how to remove
what exactly does a machine shop do to your heads?
alex martineau They mill the head flat on the mating surface. This allows for a previously warped head to be seated properly again
Why did you send your cams to the shop ?
I had the heads completely rebuilt. They need the cams to shim for the correct clearance
Is the 2012-2017 STI afected by this problem?
The engine of this Impreza is the EJ257
Yes.
No
Mine just blew at 70k 2017 sti
Looking for cam gear removal video can't find it
I have one one how to do all 4 gears
Here is link.
