It’s worse than that. Failure to launch, sputtering out during your youth and forcing heavy repairs to be made as you get older. Your 20s are so valuable, like liquid gold. Your 30s (ideally for building a family) are wholly dependent on your 20s, which can become a total mess via childhood trauma, drug addiction, and poor decision making. The conspiracy side of my brain tells me that this sort of generational trauma isn’t natural, it’s programmed into us via religion, tv, internet, 9-5 slavery, etc.

This life, or timeline if you want to call it that, isn’t interesting enough to attach ourselves to. I know that sounds dark but it’s true, the people controlling the economy, and social norms, technology, etc. do not care about people’s needs, it’s just to create a fast paced society so we’re all distracted and miserable. It’s hard not to change, best thing to do is not worry about it, just keep learning, and have faith in a bigger picture, by that I mean God, but on this planet, it’s all self preservation.

So true. We are so conditioned to think that to "win" in life, you must have a certain career, items, know certain people, do certain things to be "successful". But we never really question why these parameters are a measure to success. These parameters were created by other people. If you look at the animal world in it's most basic form, they don't have a societal pressure to be a certain way. They just live.

@@kacknoobdeluxe The real reason why we pursue anything is because deep down we feel incomplete within ourselves so we always look for some goal to pursue to satisfy our sense of lack. Everything we do nowadays is basically to have some sort of a high status in the hierarchy and to seem like an interesting person in front of others. Now ofc there is nothing wrong with pursuing passions or goals, as long we are present and mindful while doing these things and ofc the most important thing to do these things because we enjoy them not for some sort of reward. The real problem is that society nowadays expects us to have high paying jobs, have a career, car, money, expensive things, social skills all these things just to fit in the norms of society and be a "normal" person. That is what the author means by this quote. That all these things don't really matter, they are just man made concepts that have consumed our entire existence. As for "god brought us here for a reason" I think that reason is to enjoy life and experience this beautiful reality through this opportunity that we were given. If you were to just give introspectivness and mindfulness a shot I think you will find all of what I said to be true, but again I can't make any assumptions. Hope this helps friend

Basically do self improvement in a way the suits your life and don’t let fear dictate what works for you. It’s okay to not meet the fake standards that others place around you. You must take what others say and apply it but don’t let peoples words alter your life in a way that doesn’t feel ideal for you. What works for you is already figured out..

@Shimmy Shai It's a problem because some kids didn't exactly learn those things, they needed to know so they can protect their self-worth in themselves. A lot of people are trying to self-improve, but there's factors that even stump their growth, or even grow in a way that's unhealthy for them, even dangerous. Today I just learned something about myself that shows that a combination of flawed things that I was taught, alongside my self-worth being tossed around by the opinions of others that I never asked to be treated terribly until I believed it, and the consequence of some poor decision making as a result of these factors. While I made it through grade school and other kids with problems with their own, there's things that still needs to be improved, but not in the way I currently am, holding onto now useless information I over worried, overconsumed, and etc. about. I need a new and different mindset and to learn how to commit to it to be my new present.

This video was a personal call out video for me. I want to cry at how accurate this was. My whole life for the past 3 years was obsessed with self improvement. I have a shit load of mental illness and I desperately want to claw out of the dark hole life threw me in.
I started forcing myself to workout, to only eating fruits and vegetables and water. I missed the high sugar would give me. I would meditate even when my mind would wander with intrusive thoughts. I wrote journal entries with 0 points and takeaways and I limited myself from my friends irl and on social media.
I desperately wanted to be “That Girl” the girl who has her shit together
But in reality I was fooling myself. I felt like I was trying to prove to everyone that I’m SOO independent, that I’m better, that my life has more value. I would post everything on instagram- from my workouts, my studies, my diet, my poems- just to feel like I’m “better” somehow.
I wanted to prove myself so bad and get praised (due to some childhood trauma but I’m not getting into that)
I felt -and still feel- like I’m in a race against invisible time. Like if I don’t get my life together I’ll forever be a failure.
I even went as far as switching my major twice to a more “respectable” field just for more praise and validation and now I want to cry so bad that I never once put myself first. Every single thing I’ve done was to directly or indirectly please other people. A check list of positive actions just to get a “gold star” stamped on my progress.
This video really really did it for me.

Our society pushes perfection but we aren’t made to be perfect, we are imperfect and create, craft and imagine things that seem impractical and nonsense but turn out something wonderful in the end. You are not alone.

If you die tonight, do you know where you're going? Did you know that Jesus Christ is THE Truth, the life and the only way to Heaven?
Revelation 20:15 ''Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.''
Through Jesus Christ, God offers you a FREE gift - forgiveness. All you need to do is repent, turn away from your sins and evil ways,
from now on put your faith completely in Jesus Christ and be obedient to Him.
      Biblical explanation of the Gospel:
God doesn’t want anybody in hell, but you must understand why
we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go
there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but
rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). God gave us free will and since Adam
sinned in the garden, sin is the nature of our flesh and we ALL have sinned. (Romans 3:23)
The law demands death to those who sin (Romans 6:23). Since we have all sinned, we all deserve hell.
Revelation 21:8 says that all liars will go to hell. Yes, even if you have lied once in your life, you are sentenced to hell - that's how
high God's standards are of moral perfection because God is holy and righteous, there is not one sin in Him.
For someone to be justified before holy God they have to be sinless, that's why everyone need Jesus Christ
      - for He lived a sinless life, died on the cross and rose from the dead on the third day.
None of us are good in God’s eyes, because for God good means moral perfection. We all
have broken God’s commandments, we all have sinned in our lives so none of us
are good. ‘’For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is
guilty of breaking all of it.’’ (James 2:10). Our carnal mind is hostile to God; it does not submit
to God's moral law and it never will (Romans 8:7). We hate the thought of God for the same reason a criminal
hates a policeman - we know we have sinned against God and are guilty of it and we don't want to be damned.
No good works will ever save you. You can't earn salvation by good works, because God will judge us for our sin.
Good News is that Jesus Christ lived a perfect, holy, sinless life and He died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
He was buried and He was raised from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever
believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’’ (John 3:16)
We aren’t saved by our good works, but only by the grace of God through faith in Christ.
''For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -
not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Jesus said ‘’it is finished’’ (John 19:30) just before He died on the cross, which means He paid the fine for our sins
(past, present, future) to be forgiven only IF we repent and trust in Him.
This is how you can get saved from sin and hell - repent of your sins and trust in Jesus Christ. Get to know Him
      by reading God's Word.
So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” (Luke 11:13)
''What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!'' (Romans 6:15)
''Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out'' (Acts 3:19)
Repentance is a turning away from sin and all evil works, and it always results in changed behavior (Luke 3:8).
Biblically, a person who repents does not continue willfully in sin.
While sorrow from sin is not equivalent to repentance, it is certainly an element of scriptural repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10).
Do not play a hypocrite. ''God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.
If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.'' (1 John 1:5-6)
(John 3:3) Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."
If you have repented and have genuine faith in Jesus Christ then you will receive the gift of Holy Spirit and be born-again spiritually.
When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance
until the redemption of those who are God’s possession - to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36)
''You will know them by their fruits'' (Matthew 7)
If you have been truly born-again with the Holy Spirit and He has regenerated your heart, you will desire righteousnes -
to do what is good and righteous in God's eyes, to seek God everyday in His Word and prayer, to strengthen your relationship with God.
You will no longer desire to willfully continue living in sin but will want to obey God out of your love for Him because of His amazing grace
revealed to us through the death and resurrection of His Son.
''Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.'' (2 Corinthians 5:17)
''For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.'' (Eph 2:10)
You will have a testimony - of what your life had been before and how has it changed now when you have surrendered it to Lord Jesus Christ.
As a declaration and affirmation of your faith in Jesus Christ, get baptised in water because He commanded us to do so.
In John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.''
''Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit'' (Matthew 28:19)
''Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.'' (Acts 2:41)
''And this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you also - not the removal of dirt from the body,
but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,'' (1 Peter 3:21)
''We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that,
just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.'' (Romans 6:4)
''Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God,
who raised him from the dead.'' (Colossians 2:12)
Please get right with God and get to know Jesus Christ personally today before it’s too late, because there’s not much time left!
"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.’’ (Mark 13:32)
Get to know Christ through God's Word - Bible. At first I recommend reading Gospel of John and book of Romans. God bless you!

Social media and the urge for a relationship are the downfall for us in our current society. I can admit that I always feel like I needed to stay socially acceptable and I worried how people viewed me. Most of all I looked at the 1% of jock and such who easily got a relationship and felt discouraged and desperate. The one thing I started working on and still am is patience but also being your true self. If you aren’t being accepted by your crush (for example) for being yourself then you don’t need that person. They don’t value you for who you. Patience and self esteem as well as not worrying what others think of you is the key in life and I’m still working on thinking like this more. Life is what you make it and your true self is the only thing that matters.

I especially love the quote "all because he had figured out, there was never anything to figure out". Had this realization a few days ago. I had a sense that whatever these self-help guys were saying, were obviously beneficial to me, but I had very mixed feelings because I overconsumed every bit of information. Eventually I just subconsciously stopped because I was burnt out, and I felt an overwhelming sense of awareness between what I learned the past year, and connecting it to what I thought was brainwashing on each side of the spectrum. At first it confused me, but I then realized I didn't want to be like every self-help guy and wanted to be my own person that could wisely decide what is fulfilling in life to me.

I've had almost every realization up until you got to the part where you said that after all the self help he hadn't changed much at all.. and when you explained beyond that. I actually started shedding a tear because man.. I've been so lost lately. I've spent years hustling, building a life that may look good.. nice place, nice car.. but I've been miserable inside man. I'm finally learning what you taught in this video. I realized much of it a while ago but this brought it home in a powerful way. Thank you for this. Nothing is going to happen, you're not going to be enlightened, you're not going to go to heaven or hell you're not going to achieve eternal peace or bliss. Time cannot be lost or gained because it's only your memories. You can't hold on to anything, not even your breath. So no point in struggling. I don't have any real social media, and there's some downsides. You touched on this in a single sentence: I'm very disconnected from what most people do these days...
I'm glad I'm not addicted to scrolling TikTok videos, but I'm blind to our modern culture in many ways. I'm better at waiting for real rewards though.
I start by waking up and working out while listening to a video like this knowing I'll learn something and feel energized after just the first 10 mins of being up. Not long but everyday I need to tell myself here we go... and I can imagine instant gratification of scrolling makes this harder to do!
I like using French presses for coffee so I NEED to wait 5-10 minutes for my brew. And so on. I really feel waiting a small amount for small rewards, is well, rewarding in itself.

I recently got suspended from my job because my mood revolved so much around other people's opinions of me that it affected my job performance and how I interacted with my coworkers. I made the conscious decision to stop relying on other people's opinions of me, and rely on my own judgement. The truth is that I have not been able to trust myself because I was bullied for being overweight and dressing in unflattering ways when I was a teenager, and I thought by listening to other people's opinions over mine, I would prevent bullying. The only reason why I did get overweight and dressed poorly was because I had SEVERE dissociation from being sexually abused when I was a kid. I was an emotional/boredom eater, and I was not even aware of how big I was getting because I was so disconnected from my body and the external world. I justified my clothes getting tighter with sizes running too small. Now I realize I can trust myself and have self awareness without having to outsource my perception to other people. I also see more reasons to maintain a healthy weight besides aesthetics.

What personally helped me after around 5 years of really bad depression was starting to study chaos magic, it has some really interesting points from a philosophical standpoint. In extremely simplified terms: Nothing is real, everything is permitted. I know, I know, Assassins Creed. But no, in all seriousness, at the start there is one basic rule (out of the few) and it states: A person is manipulated by their surroundings be it family, religion, culture or politics. It shows you a way to get out of that mindset. Most important of all, it is totally, 100% upfront with a couple of things. First that the reality we see is one made of opposites so for every thing you do you will see its other side. If you separate yourself from, lets say, social media, you will see more piece (this is not in the book, just something I noticed once I did it for myself). It is made of actions and reactions. You should change small things in your everyday life, choose the things that you can't fail in, and replace them with something also meaningless. Once you understand that things can be changed, you will want to change more. This in itself will at a point not be enough. You need to chase the opposites of what you believed your whole life and try it out. This will generally result in you realizing that for every bad thing stated on your original point of view there is an opposite argument on the new one that once seemed so alien to you. In no time, most of the people who try hard enough will see that there is no one valid point of view and that things are more complex then our first perception of the world. This is the point where a good part of the perceptions and manipulations regarding a persons outside influences are broken. After that it is up to you to figure out what you want and what is not for you. For me personally it is 3D animation, something I have known and have been studying for some time now. It dose not matter if it is something I will do for a job, it is just something I deeply enjoy so I will keep doing it regardless... Nothing is real, everything is permitted. (This of course excludes a lot of magical aspects from the study, if you are a stranger somewhere else and are interested in this subject, just try out Liber Null by Peter Carroll to see if its something you might be interested in... If not, who cares, It is not like you are missing anything, we are all going to die anyways, it is not like you can really fuck up at life ;) )

I'm living it the way that I want, and no one is going to change me. No one in this world has dominion over me. I make my own decisions. I don't question my options. I take action. I had no goal in life, nothing I wanted to do, right from the start. My parent kept pushing me to study so that I can graduate with a bachelor degree of any useful profession. But I couldn't care less. I only wanted to enjoy life and play.
Imagine finally waking up after I reached age 28. It is a horrifying experience. At that point, I had a sudden realization that life is short and I wanted to tryout many stuff that I only dreamt of in the past. So I changed.
But unlike many others, I didn't start at zero. Im already had a decent job in the IT industry. Pursuing whatever I wanted is easy as long as I don't aim for the top salary within my industry. However, all this won't have been possible without my parent's push.
I believe that self improvement is definitely good, as long as you don't become too obsessed with it. It might help you in the future in unexpected ways. I'm where I am now because I was pushed to where I am by my parents. I think of that as some kind of supervised self improvement and I'm certainly grateful for that.

The day to day journey and process itself are the reward. Who you are right now is a collective product of all of the decisions that you've made during your previous days. It's not about chasing an end goal; it's about making the "now" that much better. I've accepted that my current situation and mental state are a byproduct of the small decisions I made yesterday. Once you condition yourself to embrace the suck so to speak, it's much easier to be/do/feel what you want as it'll be the result of internalized processes instead of the external nonsense being thrown at us every day.

Excellent video Cole! I'm at this stage as well. Started as a typical gamer loner, became obsessed with self-improvement, realized that wasn't what I actually wanted, and now I just enjoy life by being present and changing my mindset. I do things I enjoy regardless of what other people think, I don't change who I am to try and impress women, I don't spend all of my waking hours trying to be rich. It's true I still work out and eat well because I genuinely enjoy it and it feels good. I'm still a lonely guy sometimes but if you're not happy with yourself you'll never be happy, in my opinion anyway. We're all gonna die one day and we don't know when. Life doesn't have to be that serious. Pursue things you enjoy, implement some discipline, be a kind and friendly person, and try to be present in each moment

This video made me watch it twice, once, just because I mindlessly watch a lot of self-improvement content and the second time to critically analyse the video to see what I agreed and disagreed with, which ended up solidifying the message for me, thanks Cole, for making me think lol.

The title and thumbnail of this video are so misleading. They make it look like just one of those "self-help, society sucks" type rants, but this is actually one of the most beautiful videos on this platform. So brilliantly written and narrated. Thank you.

This video was very helpful, I feel relieved and suddenly my mindset switched, cause I realized I was that guy in the video, I was scared to end up as a bum and not pay my mom back for everything she's has done for me, but tbh self-improvement made me more miserable and lonely, It's been years but it's time I just have fun doing what I love even if it is scary sometimes, thank you very much for this dope video

Wow this was a really different type of video. It was so self aware. It comments on how humans have this innate need to complete and figure out "the goal" of life. Society or other humans will exploit your need to reach a goal just so they can "reach the goal" of life.
Sometimes we forget sometimes there is no goal in life but to live it. The stereotypical goals were constructed by corporations and others to prey on us, and the reason they do it is to reach their own arbitrary goal which is not the only way to live.
    Crazy

I always say that I had a much clearer mind at 20 than now. I dropped out of my first degree in Philosophy, moved to an anglophone country, learned ENG to an advanced level got a degree in management, kept learning about marketing and I have never been more confused. When I was monolingual and focused on the highest expression of western conceptualisation I was healthier, happier and more self-fulfilled. It seems skills are never enough, jobs ads are essay-length, and the sense of frustration spirals down... I have been lucky enough in terms of not to become a slave to social media and the ridiculous insta BS, nor I play the game of contemporary HR wanting people details out there in the world wide web. Prioritise your health and wellbeing, because it will catch up at some point. If you think that an ingrained aspect of the systemic matrix is faulty or doesn't align with your own vision, you are in charge to create your own path in your own capacity. OWN don't be owned.

I wish I had the option of being set up in another country, food, housing, education paid for, if any natives opposed I could get mad and call them bigots and racists, have the majority of the people support me, even though I waltzed my way into THEIR country and started demanding hand outs and opportunities, taking all of that away from the native born citizens that live there, while calling them ignorant and lazy, all because I couldn’t make it in my original home country.

I think self improvement is important but more in terms of character, skills, and development of purpose and doing meaningful things with your life that you find meaningful than popularity, picking up women, and getting boatloads of money. I definitely have seen all three of those phases in my development and am currently in that third stage just finding what is meaningful to me and gonna make me turn into the man I wanna be. This video should be shown to all young men because I think we’re all struggling in this current day to find our purposes, and I think this could be that wake up call.
