Interesting Albion Road walk Phil. Brings back very early memories for me as my Dad worked in the toolroom at Hills Patent Glazing, Albion Road. He ran the Hills Social Club bar with my mom's help. I spent many nights as a kid messing about on the Club stage !This was c. 1950 to 1957 Ish. I think J.B & S Lees was opposite ? Hills did all sorts of engineering work. Including renovating army tanks!
Hi Phil back in 1983 I worked for the Railways I remember maintaining Albion sidings with one Railway line crossing the road and seeing a Railway Shunt Engine in the shed I think by then it was at the end of sidings working life and I enjoyed the History of the area all the best Paul
WOW it would have been a great sight to see the railway lines running through a steel works such as this. That picture insert helps to visualise what it would have looked like. Thanks Phil 😊Great content as usual.😊
Both sides of my family come from Oldbury Road. My maternal nan and my Dad were born on or near there. My Dad was born at the Victorian 1 Oldbury Road.
I used to drive the skip and hook loader for a very well known scrap firm not gonna say the name in case a mention upsets them (the name consists of 3 letters) I used to collect scrap skips from both William Kings and JB&S Lees in the late 2000’s, sad to see JB&S Lees have shut down 😢
@ there was a driver just running between JB&S Lees and Downing Street, smethwick all day everyday with the occasional driver popping in to lend a hand
@@Jericson41 In the late 70s we were given a scrap bonus in our wage if scrap could be reduced to a specific target. In the 6/7 months it ran we only hit the target once. Thanks jeric
Cheers for the Video Phil .Cope Allman finished about 1980 .Then Tyco . We then had Glynwed ..Capparo and Liberty. Will.have to get some pics of the siteNot sure where that rubble came from The two old buildings where the 'Rinse Plant ' The large buiilding behind housed the Stores Electrical parts and Machine Shop... ( Lathes /Milling Machine/ Drillers / Saw.) Workbenchs .
My Grandad worked at Lees most of his working life I have vague memory ( would be about 62/63 )of going with Nan to take his dinner that he forgot and i think he did hot rolling. And strangely I worked in rolled metals nearly all my working life till I retired 10 months ago. I now live about 4 mins walk from Albion road on the rec. I lure fish the cut there and there are pike in the section by the back of Lees.
Thanks BW Theres plenty of folk in West Brom who knows of or worked at this factory. Many would work there for decades. Loads of workers would have long service records
My stepdad worked for JBS Lees from leaving school to retirement. Started off on the shop floor, ended up in the offices. You probably knew him lol. Used to love trains. He would be sad that it has closed down, used to take xmas cards for everyone after he retired. Never realised how big it was till now. I have a couple of the glasses that he got for long service. Such sad news Phil.
@@adyslexicgnome2233 Thanks, I think I came across the name. I worked over in the Britannia side I think he worked over on the Trident side so our paths may not have crossed very often
I watch your videos flicking back and forth to Google Maps Streetview Phil so I can look around. The "jungle behind gate 6" was still there last July. You have a lot of local knowledge that fills in the gaps so to speak. I couldn't follow you onto the towpath. I've given this a like although it looks to me as if somebody took Hell and managed to make it worse.
Albion Road off Kelvin Way, factory the whole length of the road on your right and continues around the bend at the canal bridge and runs along the Oldbury Road. Not sure how much will be demolished but I expect a lot of it will remain IF they are converting to factory units

If it does become factory units then hopefully a lot of it may still remain, however I don't hold much hope for the offices. Thanks SF

@@awalkwithphil have emailed you his name, and my moms name. He always spoke fondly of the place. Used to do Morcombe and Wise dance if that helps lol

@@awalkwithphil yeah, think I remember him talking about Trident. Think his job involved working out the steel sizes.

I worked at JB&S Lees for 35 years untill I was made redundant 16 years ago.
Nice to hear from you Michael. I was also made redundant in the mid 80s never thought this company would ever close down
I'm glad you know where Greets Green is Phil, ..sandwell council think it's up where Guns village is 😂
They also confuse me at times, thanks Pete
