- Went to let the bowsers out this morning...door wouldn't open. So, WHAT WE HAVE HERE was a FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE with the door latch. This video will show how I finally GOT MY MIND RIGHT and fixed the failed hardware. So, you now know exactly WHO LET THE DOGS OUT.
You, Sir, are a lifesaver! Was stuck and took me all of five mins to free the lock by following the precise instructions. No damage to the door or frame whatsoever!

My handle broke... To be precise the rosettes broke and I'm locked outside of my room which doesn't have any entry with all my stuff in.. Even my mobile 🤦♂️
Take your screw driver and wedge in between the lock mechanism it should pop off and fall apart

Ours was an original knob from a '68 house. It didn't have those little pins. We took the door hinge pins out which made just enough room to use a very thin bearing knife to jimmy the two parts that were stuck.

I couldn't leave my room this morning. Had the same issue you had in this video. I ended up being able to open the door after using a wire hanger to hook over from the side that is that shorter side/piece.
I havn't been able to open my room for 2 days now, been sleeping on the couch... I need to bath though and need clothes... maybe I should just rewash the ones I have till I can get into my room I live alone btw

Engineer here, that is indeed what most engineers think. My favorite I've heard is, "well it works on paper it should work here." When a machinist/welder/install guy points out what is to them a glaring issue.

OMG Thank you!!!! We found ourselves locked IN our house when our door would not open. We struggled for quite a while and managed to get the lock partially disassembled but were still stuck inside. This RUclips video showed us how to take apart the lock mechanism and it worked like a charm!!! We got the lock out and installed a new one that we had. Thank you so much!!
Lesson #1: When the door latch keeps semi-sticking as though it is locked, change the lock right away!!! Because it is starting to fail. I never knew locks would fail so dramatically.
Second lesson: Check RUclips to see if there is a fix! Usually there is!!! Thanks again! (from Vermont)
These are my lessons learned too. It finally gave out and I'm stuck inside lol. I'm about to try replacing it with one I think I have, but currently it's night and there's a flash flood happening now. Let's see how this goes...

That would work for that style of a door knob. I went to try this on mine, but I have a different style that won't allow me to do this. Had to take the hinges off to give me more room to work a butter knife in.
I am in this situation but you didn't show how to pull the mechanism back out of the door once you bent those legs out of the way. That's where I am stuck...it is my back door as well and the dogs were dancing. I took them out front on a leash. Can't get the door latch released. And yes, it has been failing for some time. And yes, I already have a new one.

Step by step, frustration and all, this is exactly how it played out for us. You saved us 20 minutes+ of monkeying around by declaring the latch broken and just bend the clips back.
My brother was fucking around and now we're all stuck in our room.

I just had this same problem. Took mine out and took it apart, reassembled it, straightened everything back out, and put it back in the door. Tried it out and my doorknob works like new again 😁

Thank you so much. I had the same problem with the toilet door. I spent 5 mins removing it after watching your video posting. Very grateful. Only diff was everything fell apart after prying open the end. I just used the plier to pull back the latch rail to open the door.

Over the course of this posting a number of people have suggested an easy fix...remove the hinge pins. Others have stated that entry doors should never swing out because the hinge pins can simply be pushed out allowing the door to be "easily removed." I have addressed this several times. This door is a OUT-SWING with the NON-REMOVABLE hinge pins on the OUTSIDE of the door. One cannot pop anything out to remove this kind of door. All four hinges would have to be cut with a metal blade which would take a lot longer than two minutes and require all to be replaced. Furthermore, the screws holding the hinges are only accessible when the door is OPEN which cannot be done if the latch is inoperable. Do a search on hinges with non-removable pins to get a better understanding of this simple safety feature for out-swing doors.

This was all completely unnecessary lol. Take the pin out of the door hinges and it would pop right out. Takes 2 minutes.

I had the same problem with the same dog issue. Tried everything suggested from the internet. I saw your video and said “what the heck I’ve got nothing to lose”. So I tore the mechanism apart, dug out the part that goes into jam (all from the hole) and my door is now open. Thank you for practical advise. By the way... I’m a 71 year old widow that tries to DIY.

I am replacing old door knobs with levers and during the install, I had inserted the latch/spindle cam into the hole and tightened the screws down on the plate..... when the door swung closed. There was no knob for me to open it back up lol! So yep, I bent the tabs up and took it apart and 🙆♀️🙆♀️🙃😁🤗 voila! got the darn door open!

My mom was checking to see if the slant of the latch bolt was facing the door frame correctly so she closed the door leaving me LOCKED INSIDE!!

Thank you for saving me a few bucks. I took the first few frustrating steps you did and then after a few wtf's figured on ole reliable RUclips. 6 minutes of you and then 30 seconds later; DONE! The only challenge that could be an issue, is if you are locked inside with no tools. without a screwdriver and needle nose pliers; you just might end up a prisoner. Thanks again!!

I checked out your video after getting my daughter's bedroom door open. Hinges were on the inside of the bedroom. She wasn't in there. The screws that hold the knob mechanism together were also only accessible from the inside. I ended up using a hack saw and cut the door knob off. Peeled the shroud off that coveres the backside of where the screws attach. Drilled the backside of the threaded insertion area away from that plate and the knobs were free! I tried to just pull back on that middle piece....but that had broken so there was no easy access other than breaking apart the mechanism that holds everything together in that shaft.....eventually after some long nose heavy duty angled needle nose pliers fulfilling their purpose once again....(the spring that pushes the wedge back into the door was pocketed as one never knows when a spring like this will be needed!) 😎😀😇
After all that carnage was out of the way there was NO tension on that far end piece and with some light force applied against the piece and pulling back toward the knob hole the door was now open!
I was hoping that maybe there was an easier way....and sometimes I learn after the fact...but in this case. Sometimes brilliant minds think alike and there are casualties in pieces that weren't designed to make it easy to break in. I tried the credit card thing to no avail. The clearance was way too tight in this instance as well as the plates that screw into the wood weren't exactly flush and that wedge deal also upon inspection afterwards showed that the point where the angle starts is after the place where the credit card (or any piece of flexible plastic ot strong paper) would be helpful.
Thanks for sharing this so I can justify the tools I do have. I don't know if the locksmith would have done anything different either...with the exception of charging for their services and/or knowhow.

Didn't work for me. Had to resort to the brute strength and ignorance. Hacksaw, vice grips, crow bar. It came open after a fight.
Thanks for this, was not able to use my bathroom toilet for the last few hours. With mine when I bent the lugs everything came away and I still wasn't able to open it, finally I reached in and there was a spring when I pulled that it opened.
That was very frustrating but thanks for the help.

One of my bathroom doors is doing this exact thing, luckily I have two doors but people walking through my bedroom just to use the bathroom is a bit annoying. I’ll give this a go when my husband wakes up to leave for work.

Im 16 and this has happend to me 3 times before In the same house luckily my dad is a locksmith but currently as of typing this I am trapped inside a room with the same problem but I think it is funny

It's helpful for that situation, but ours is a bedroom door, and we can't get to the other side. Might need a locksmith. At least it would have only one pin so maybe it's worth messing with a little longer.
Ok, I solved it. I removed the left door and had to drive out the throw cylinder with an 8" punch & hammer. Need crowbar of any type Ez first time Ive had any door and knob problem and Im 70. One man no exoerience 1 hr fooling around ,finding trying different tools, forgetting where I put them last. It would take 20 min now . Now,how to tell a good door nob from junk..Price no doubt .Well ithe cheapy probably lasted 20yrs. and cost $10 then... well,thats cheap and easy to diy the next time for another 20 yrs. Not for me but the next youngster.

I had this exact situation 4 days ago! Dog had to go out and I couldn't open the stupid door with the knob turning. I damaged my door hole by the time I had gotten it out. It came out piece by piece. Springs came out. Pieces of metal everywhere. I still couldn't get it out after removing the part you showed. I grabbed what was left with needle-nose pliers and twisted it until it finally came out. Nice video though.
Exactly what happened to me! I was about to do a demolition job with a power saw. But then I saw your video and the mechanism looked very nearly like mine! And it worked! Didn't have to break anything except the two tabs! Great video!
