Excellent advice. Worked for me. I used a small paper clip as a jumper wire.

I use to pull fuse 18 to start but then i bought a 110 battery and now I can simply turn the key. Easy fix. Expensive battery, but big engines need strong battery.

Nope, as soon as the ignition lock is off you can plug it back in and drive away

I went to charge my battery today and forgot that the charger was on the 24v setting. Didn't realize for a few minutes before I disconnected it. I could smell a bit of an electrical burning. Now, the key will not turn in the ignition. The interior lights still work and the central locking still unlocks with the key fob. I have tested all fuses in the engine bay, glove box and at the rear, all are fine. Any idea where I should look next? I have tried disconnecting the battery for 30 mins, I have also removed and replaced fuse 18 with no joy. I did try to turn the key while the 24v charger was running, I have a feeling that the burning smell was the solenoid as the burning smell came from inside the vehicle, 24v may have been too much? This is a 2003 Range Rover HSE, UK model.

Number 18 fuse and put a switch on it, ( glovebox) just as handy as turn it on off then :)

I'll try this in a moment, thanks for putting this up, my RR is exactly the same but I put my key in, the radio screen comes up with land rover logo but no functions. Also nothing comes up on the dash....
what was the long term fix for you? Cheers

From what I understand there are 3 distinct issues:
      1. A lot of issues on this car come from a drained battery so make sure before you do anything that the battery is sufficiently charged
      2. The microswitch on the steering lock jams up, and doesn't send the unlock signal to the ignition switch. You can check this by removing fuse 18 then trying again. This can sometimes be sorted by drilling a small hole into the column and spraying some lubricant in to loosen up the pin. Ultimately you need to change the switch which doesn't come separately so its either a full column or get a scrap one and rob the switch.
      3. The issue above is the lumen ECU failing. which again you would need to steal from another steering column. I wired a small switch in between pins 1 and 7 on the plug so when it does happen I can override the ignition lock.
Sods law as soon as I wired in the switch the problem stopped happening.......... But either way I.m still driving without an expensive repair.

@@MrDJsuperhans thank you. where would I get any wire? sorry if these are stupid questions but do I go buy wire from somewhere or find it from somewhere else? then do I keep the wire in when I put the thing back in? thank you for as much detail as you can provide.
