Lyrics:
My friend David was a good kid
He had my back, I always knew he did
And he was different than most
And maybe I was too
And hanging out with the in crowd just wasn't our thing
There was a whole lot more that we could see on these plains
Well some people just seem to get stuck and hang around
It's college or trade school for those with the means
There's never been any small towns for those in between
Yeah, the poor folks, they go to work or they go to war
I did 1, 500 days in the Corps
When I got back, nothing looked the same anymore
I got on with the local police
It just seemed to fit
But things had changed
By then David had a daughter and a son
And a rap sheet to prove all the time that he'd done
He was just a burned out, beat down shell of my old friend
And on a three-day binge, he was speeding through town
And I bumped the wailers to try to slow him down
He didn't know it was me, and he took off
Oh, how things change
And I found his truck in the floodplain, upside down
It was a hell of a rain, I don't know if he drowned
Or if he died on impact, he must have rolled three times
Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse
That his mom was a late night E.R. nurse
And he was D.O.A., she just about lost her mind
David's wife drops by every once in a while
The childhood stories always make her smile
But somehow, we always go back to that day
When I found his truck in the floodplain upside down
It was a hell of a rain, I don't know if he drowned
Or if he died on impact, he must have rolled three times
Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse
That his mom was a late night E.R. nurse
And he was D.O.A., she just about lost her mind
Ain't it the times?

A good percent of all of us have a David in our life 11/30/23🕊️
Guys like Cody are a dying breed. They know how to tug at your heart strings and make you feel what they are singing about. My mother is an er nurse and my biggest fear is her going through what Cody is singing about here and I tear up everytime I here this song. I know he wont see this comment but please keep doing what you're doing.
We've all got a "David" in our lives, maybe not one that has passed, but one that is or was on a toxic path. Lets all make sure to tell the Davids in our lives we care about them!
Dude this is damn near gospel! We as a people need to take care of the Davids in our lives a little bit better than shun them
One of my best high school friends i grew up with wrecked and passed away he was coming home from duck hunting it was on Christmas Eve and this song sends chills down my spine...
I have a buddy that I wouldn’t have gotten through high school without and I worry about him and his decisions a lot. This song definitely gives me chills when I put my buddy in the spot of David.
Hells yes son. I think of my close bud every day. Going on 27 years now. Feels like yesterday.
I love you I get it see I get it
Man tonight is the first time I'm hearing this song and I'm drinking... well it hit me hard... my momma is 300miles away from me across texas. Raised in Fort worth met a woman in Lubbock got married had kids and my mother still around but I miss her every day. That woman was my life line when I had to call her. now I work a really damn good job very good pay a wife with 3kids😮
As a former "David" and losing my best friend version of "David" thirteen years ago, I whole heartedly approve and love this song. I listen to it every time I think about my "David"
It's been said 1000 times before, but I'll say it again...
THIS is the REAL SHIT, Awesome REAL music. Not the crap they feed you on the Radio!
Very well said! This guy is what us real country boys been needing.
They play CUNTry music on the radio. It sucks
I don’t know if you’ve heard of him, but Colter Wall is another good country artist like Cody jinks is, you’ll love ‘em
I won't listen to that new crap. The ONLY thing I like about new vehicles is the MP3 option. Other than that, I'll take old iron any day. With a little creativity I can have both a classic vehicle AND good music. Life is too short for any other way.
I agree completely. Many of the mainstream country artist today ( I use that whole sentence loosely) probably don’t know how to start a lawnmower. Let alone original themes for country music. Aside from the ever popular theme of sitting on a tailgate drinking beer. Which I can relate to. But I need more - Cody Jinks, Chris Knight , Tyler Childers, Whiskey Myers etc. I’d be curious if they went mainstream if the quality and substance of their music would suffer?
The poor go to work or they go to war. Truer words my friends.
Lost my best friend David 13 years ago to drunk driving. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him. Then I just had to put my fur baby to sleep that he had given and it broke me even more. Miss you everyday David. Till we meet again.
As a Cop for 17 years this song hits home...seen so many old high school buddies burn themselves out on Dope and lose so much ....god bless Cody Jinks
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping us all safe day and night sir💙
Blue line brother. 98 to 05. SWAT, traffic crash reconstruction. Ain't nothin like a bad car crash. Guys like this, artists, keep the PTSD at bay. Long live the country poets. Take care, and thanks for wearin the badge.
thank u for ur service and u and the rest of the officers in this country are in my prayers God bless u and ur family
Acab
J Feldhacker No back the blue💙
This song hits home in more ways than one. Cody you are a prolific song writer who doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
Letz give him the credit he deserves!
Songs like this don't need a video. I can visualize every sentence in this song by myself.
Forget movie, it could be a whole movie. Hollywood would mess it up though. Back in the 70s or 80s it would be a great movie. Idk If was made somewhat like Where the red fern grows with today's production. It would be great
It would have worked back in the 30's or 40's, too. It's timeless.
Danny McCloggie same here
Danny McCloggie great comment bro. The truth!
Same
AS A DAVID MYSELF, I APPROVE
My “David”, I lived a couple hours away. They found my number as his emergency contact first… he’d got really drunk, taken some sort of sleep pill, and got behind the wheel. His old Chevy pickup ran off the road and hit a culvert. Jumped, landed nose first and flipped on its roof. I was first to be there shortly followed by his mother. The way we wept as they drug his truck out of the ditch, mangled and crushed… I’ll never forget it. RIP “David”, you’re always missed brother.
This song reminds me so much of my step father. His name was David. He was my best friend. Passed away in 2016 at 37 years old. Rip.
This guy is a Legend in the making. That voice gives me chills because I can feel the pain of true talent going unseen but keep going.
When going through hell keep going
What Jason said,
It's Real. It's happening.
amen brother
I got to agree with you
Jason I had never heard of this guy before. Amazing. Simply amazing. It's easy to see why he doesn't get air time on most country stations. He's way more talented than that. Way above the likes of Florida Georgia Line or any other so called country stars.
That's who's gonna fill their shoes!
like!
+Buddy Green AGREED !!
correct!!!!
Buddy Green man, that is such a good comment. thank God someone can. 2000s country was not getting it
Buddy Green you got that right. He will fill their shoes!
"Poor folks go to work or they go to war." Ain't that the damn truth?!
Roger that
That is the truth.
Joseph Kicklighter but it’s us country folk who are strong brother ain’t scared N don’t back up
Old men start wars and young men have to go fight them...funny how things workout!?!
Yep I'm living proof of it unfortunately. Enlisted when I was 17 and went to sandy land.
Anyone who ever served knows the feeling.
In April of this year I lost my best friend Kevin to suicide sadly and every time this song comes I think of him. What hits home the most is that his mom too was an overnight ER nurse and she was just finishing her shift when he heard the news. This song will always make me cry.
this song "David" really hit home with me and my husbands best friend. My husband name was David , and him and his best friend Jeff had been to watch the Alabama /Auburn football game and when they parted ways David was on his motorcycle and a truck changed lanes and clipped the back of his bike he went off a high embankment and was doable on impact they said, I about lost my mind for the next year afterwards. thank you Cody for such a great song!!!
im sorry to hear your story
Same here my name is David to
Sorry you went through that ma'am. Prayers up for you.
😭😭😭
My name is David and this song fits me to a tee thanks for this great song cody i have a 94 f-150 4x4 on 17 inch tires n a 4 inch lift on it n i can picture this when im driving ,👍💯👍💯👍💯
I was in a horrible car accident 4 years ago and my buddy who was driving fell asleep. only 18. not a day goes by that I don't think about it. really feel this song. brought tears to my eyes.
Eli Webster and that’s why we keep Loud and Heavy playing, and we don’t go the speed limit cause anything under 80 is slow to us and boring. It keeps us awake.
Can’t tell you how many scenes I’ve been to that make me think of this. I pray for them all.
Great to see a new singer that hits home. His music is much better than 90% of the new singers. Great job!
Poor folks they go to work or they go to war. As a army combat veteran that statement shakes me to the core. I love your music I have listened to this song a 1000 times
One word to describe Cody Jinks music. LEGEN...(wait for it)...DARY !!!!!!!!!
I was a LEO his name wasn’t David but I’ve lived this song almost word for word I miss him.
I cry every time i hear this wonderful song Cody. I imagine David's momma at work when he arrives in the ER and put myself in her shoes if my child was in that situation! Well done!
This song hits hard. I had listened to it dozens of times before I realized the video screen is slowly moving from the left to right
This song stopped me in my tracks, took my breath away, and made me cry. What a lyricist you are, sir! Thank you for making music from the heart!
I am sary for your loss
Same with broken window serenade for me
I had a childhood friend I'd known since I was 10 die at 23 in a motorcycle wreck while I was in Navy basic at Great Lakes. He was on a Ninja streetbike hauling ass around a corner outside Texarkana and lost control, went straight into a stop sign and died on impact. I got the letter in basic and it almost made me quit, but I made it through basic and my time in the Navy as an airframer on F-18's because I know it's what we always talked about doing...so I stuck it out. This one's for you old brother.
I gotta listen to him everymorning before I go to work awesome song writer and singer I've been sober for 3 years now keep putting music like your doing love ya
It's a sad life being law enforcement where you grew up. I told one of the nurses at work (I work in a jail) about a kid I went to highschool with and we got our first job together. Now he's a heroin addict and I'm a deputy. She heard this song and said it reminded her of my story.
It is sometimes. Nothing can really prepare you for that aspect of the job unfortunately. I'd say it gets easier but I don't really believe that it does. Take care of your mental health and see a counselor if you start getting burned out or start having coping issues and stay safe out there!
God bless David, we all know a David , always try to be positive
Cody just seems to get it. His songs make you feel. Don’t always feel good, but they definitely make you feel. I think he is a throwback to the good days of country. Plus he has a great beard and he was a Marine like me. God Bless
Love your comment! Thank you for your service! ❤🗽🇺🇲
Thank you and each and every veteran who has ever served to keep us all safe. "Ain't No Words, To Say How Much We Need You" all vets. Thanks again sir
That's a sign of good music, if you cant hear emotion (no matter which one it may be) the artist has failed
@@dislikebutton5220 agreed!
He wasn't a marine but agreed!
Just lost my best friend of 47 years, to cancer. Rick and I used to do some stupid stuff back in our younger days, and back then Rick's Mom worked the graveyard shift as an ER nurse. Years later, I remember his Dad telling us that her worst fear was having to see one of us brought in DOA. Makes me cry when I listen to this song. Cody is definitely one of the best song writers/singer in a long time. Thanks for the heart wrenching story, Cody!!!
This hits hard. One of my best friends Eli died in a single vehicle car accident yesterday. The vehicle rolled 3 times and he was ejected from the vehicle and died on impact. I played lacrosse with him and then coached him his senior year this year. We were in the middle of summer practice when we heard and I got in my car to go home and this song was the next song on my playlist. Such an amazing song.
my god this song puts knots in my gut. thanks Cody, great song. RIP Dave, love u bud
That's a good thing
That's the key to music. If it doesn't make an impression or "hit home", it's a dud. Cody Jinks is my new favorite artist. Real sound, real story, true country music.
My dad.had to explain what the words were about and what he was saying
It's a good song tho
Cody Jinks We love you! My favorite song!
Man I miss my buddy bo so much it hurts. Love ya buddy. Hope you hear me jamming this in heaven.
My buddy Dave Atkinson and I spent a few good years closing down bars and having crazy ass times. Then he got into meth and things went south. He moved back to Texas and was in a roll-over accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He was starting to straighten out and enjoy his life the way it was when he was shot in the neck after some asshole doesn’t check the chamber of a rifle they were cleaning before a hunt. RIP Dave, miss you brother
This has been one of my all time favorite songs for the past few years. It takes me back to a time before the pain and sadness. My best friend and I were in an accident one night drinking and driving. We ran off the road and hit the telephone pole head on doing 120. He was killed on impact and I was taken to the ICU. Man do I miss him and the times we had. Heartbreak got the best of us that day and sadly I'm the only one to love to talk about it. I only listen to this song when I drink. I try not to do that a whole lot anymore but sometimes life gets the best of me and here I am.
Goosebumps. Everytime.
I agree with y'all hunny
🤘
same, this song hits close to home for me. always gives me goosebumps but it helps.
Frl
AMEN, I get Goosebumps everytime I listen to it !!!!!!!!
1 hell of a song, cheers to those we have lost,
The realest song I’ve heard in a long long time and chills, deep knowing chills come over me. Definitely know friends like David AND the speaker of the story. “I spent fifteen hundred days in the core and got back nothin but the same and more” JEEZ it makes you want to better benefits for our veterans coming home
I just lost my best friend. david on 12/23/2020. Fly high brother man. Ive lost 6 family members in the past 5 weeks.
Hang in there
I discovered Cody Jinks by accident now it’s on constant rotation. I love his voice. This is one album I want the cd so I can play it in my car!
Aux cords are great
Buy the album!
Supprot cody!
If you like him you’ll also like Colter Wall
Luckily they still sell CD's
you gotta see him live.. u gonna get chill bumps.. so good.
2 crazy things. It’s very easy to visualize the lyrics but also we are all imagining very different settings.
Rest well David. I know this guy. I have a David. That friend that u always cling to. That friend that needs a friend. This was my brother.
My friend David was a good kid

YOU THE REAL MVP
"bumped the wailers"?
@@Lengsel7 turned on his sirens
Brad K flashed the roof lights on the top of his cruiser to try to “warn” him
Brad K “wailers” is a Nick name cops give to the type of siren they first use before the long siren.... it’s a “warming” in the south to hit em but let the car keep going.... (my dad and uncle are troopers lol)
This is why I'm fan of Cody Jinks. I don't know a David, but between the lyrics and Cody's voice, this song could almost be about someone I do know. That's great music there. And Cody, if you happen upon this comment, I'm deeply sorry for your loss.
Fly high Scott mosher. This song is really hitting home tonight. I gave him a jinks CD and he was hooked.
OMG. I'm not crying, you're crying.
Therapy!
Our community (Teague, TX)has been hit really bad with alot of tragedy the past week and a half. A young boy in an ATV accident, a veteran who just won a Harley @Waco harley-davidson madness in a motorcycle accident, young lady in a house fire, young woman wrecked and was found 4 days later, and thats just some. We've been hit hard here and Cody Jinks has been my medicine in this hard time. ❤❤❤
It's such a masterpiece, I can't hardly listen, I've lost several friends in kentucky to car accidents and drugs. It's like hearing the dance from garth brooks.
This song made me cry, it really hits home for me. Thank you Cody Jinks for producing great music!!
Don’t know how he can sing this song live cause I get choked up every time that chorus plays just listening to it
I can handle Cody not selling his soul to Nashville just to be on the radio why would I want to listen to pop music from him when he makes awesome country music
Drifter , can you make folk cry when play and sing?
One of the toughest things in life is seeing a loved one going full speed down a dead end road
We should all thank God for people like Cody, who have this kind of music running around inside his head, I love the guitar, fiddle and steel parts in the song. You don't here this anymore these days. So refreshing to hear real country music again!!!
Cody has a voice like no other, it's real country but his music sounds like it comes from the soul. This album has been on rotation for weeks now, hey Cody... come to Australia :)
To visit we are proud of him in Texas!!
I lost my best friend to a car wreck a few years back I found the wreck along with him d.o.a. this song has made me feel that I'm not alone
I'm sorry for your loss mate :(
Beautifully tragic and haunting but simply amazing. I desperately wish that there were more musicians like you, Cody. One word: Talent.
So real, can visualize this whole song as it plays! Thank you Cody
Saw this song done live in Richmond, Va a couple of weeks ago, along with Mamma song and Cast No Stones. My eyes were misty the whole time. Not many artists can make me cry but Cody does, If I didn't know better I'd think he had someone following me around my whole life writing about it
THATS FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cody, don't change a thing, your style and sound brings it home to many people. it is refreshing to hear you music considering what CMT calls country today. Great job!
Aight this one hits home.
Great song !
Respect from France 🇫🇷
As a Firefighter/EMT this not only bring back bad memories of car accidents I’ve responded to, but it reminds me of the crash that took my friends life. The parallels between the song and that day sends me into tears. Still a great song but it just brings up too many bad memories.........and nightmares. Great job on the music though Cody Jinks!
It never really gets easier, no matter if you know them or not. We're all human, but we do things that other people could never dream of. Don't ever think you're too tough to talk, because we lose brothers to PTSD every day. Your fellow FFs, Engineer or Captain will be more than willing to talk because it's no little matter what we see every day.
Flyboy207 I hear ya. I know I gotta talk to somebody, nightmares and flashbacks bother me every night and day. I thank you though for the encouragement
Man you don't have one single song that don't have a heart in it. My youngest brother lives in Texas and gets to go to your shows all the time, I guess I'm gonna have to schedule one of my trips back home to Oklahoma to coincide with one of your shows in Texas, I'd drive an extra 6 or 8 hours to see you live.
Who are the 650+ people that gave this song a Thumbs Down ??? They obviously don't know a Country Music legend or a GREAT song when they hear it !!!!!!!!!
Your voice is incredible. I love riding in my jeep with the windows down, blasting iTunes off my aux cord with your songs. Red dirt music is best. You rock Cody.
Thanks for the support Karina!
+Cody Jinks heard the song for the first time yesterday on the radio from a life long country fan. YOU ROCK CODY
I'm glad people are making good music again.. cody jinks becoming one of my favourites.
Two best voices, Randy Owens and Cody Jinx
I know how it feels! Some songs I write take months sometimes years! You really must live through it to write it! God Bless you brother! Can not wait to see ya in Sactown Feb 3! We need to have us a chat on a break!
I love Cody Jinks. One of a kind
This song hits to close to home for me. My best friend blew a front tire on his truck. I went to go help him and got the tire changed. I told him “don’t go fast you’ll pop the tire again”. It was like 2 in the morning and we wanted to get the hell off the highway. I followed him 1 mile and looked at the speed we where at 90 mph. Looked up and his truck went down the same tire popped. And he died in my hands.
I am sorry about cowboy i know how to lose friends in car crachs if you get this text me back
I get chills listening to this
I love music... I love Cody Jinks... Come to Brazil
It doesn't get any more soul searching and reminiscing than this song does. Cody's buddy Ms Courtney Patton is another one who deserves praise for her talents as a singer, songwriter and musician too. If you haven't heard her yet, give her a listen
Thank you Cody for this song! Singing real life brother!
Cody, I have a handful of songs that i listen to EveryDay and this and Headcase are two of them... love your music and the talent that you have shared with our world. You ROCK man!!!
Unfortunately some of us are gonna be David no matter what anyone tries to say or do, it’s inevitable, bc things do happen and things change that some of us can’t talk about!
This song just hits harder every time I hear it. Great job on it
😱😭 tragedy... So glad Cody has music to process that heavy shit...I can't even fathom finding my best friend like that... R.I.P David 💔💔💔
Odessa to Banning Cody will get you there and back. Music keeps me inside the lines!
This song has easily the best Chorus i've ever heard. The vocal melody and harmony has a truckload of emotion, and the way everything is delivered is absolutely perfect. Good work, man. Looking forward to seeing what else ya got.
Hey Tyler. Appreciate the good words
Of course, man!
@@CodyJinks I love your voice and your music. Can't get enough of it. Wishing you success in your journey.
Understand why now
Fishermen often find the right way
as an officer who had to arrest his childhood best friend and saw a middle school friend shot a couple years back over a drug rip, i can relate to this in a way, i hope they got off the drugs and turned things around
My moms an RN at the hospital in the small town i live in. My brother wrecked on his way to work and passed away. He was a good dude, wasnt strung out or anything. Everytime i hear that part i get choked up thinking about the absolute hell my poor mom went thru that morning. I had no idea what was happening, me being a pos david that shouldve went instead of my brother, was in prison 400 miles away.
hits so close to the heart....life love it hate it.....life, tnx
I graduated Vocational college with a degree on Security, Fire and Rescue, just a month before enlisting to the Military. Did my service in the Airforce as an MP. After hanging my dogtags on the wall, i got a job as a Security officer for a local security company. Its a disheartening feeling that a lot of the suspects on our sites are people i used to go to school with. Ive tried talking sense into the younger ones ive met, the kids i used to support back in HS. A lot of souls wandering with no sense of heading.
This song hits hard like a 1oz. slug....
Never heard a sad song so upbeat, but it makes it so much more powerful. Celebrating Davids life vs. Crying about the loss. Youre the man Cody Jinks. See you in Asheville!
Damn what a song!
I relate to many aspects of each of his songs. Lost a few good friends and gained many. Truly makes you appreciate life for the “lessons” it throws your way. Thankyou for the amazing music.
Got to see you for the first time when you played the Shreveport Municipal and already liked your music but now you are a favorite! Bringing your mama on stage was awesome. I was there with my son for our first night out since he got to be a grown man. Wonderful memories. Please keep making great music.
Amazing song! Cody, once said that he worked for a year in studio for this great creation and the results can be seen!
Thank you for this song, Cody. Incredible. Sorry for the loss of your friend, grateful for your music. Country needs you... ~Monk
awesome song. reminds me of Chris knights songwriting. both you guys write about everyday life. don't change a thing cody, we need this in country music.
Chris Knight is great
Cody Jinks
I will see you in nashville december 3rd.
yeah
Keven Mckelly I just saw Chris knight in Chattanooga last month, awesome show can't wait to see Cody jinks
My best buddy James. I miss him.
