Gordon Lightfoot was born in my hometown, Orillia, Ontario, Canada. He's one of Canada's treasures as a great Folk/Folk Rock singer/songwriter. He passed away last May 2023 at the age of 84. Our town has had recent celebrations of Gordon Lightfoot. You can find a cool statue of him sitting cross-legged with his guitar in a local park by the lake. Another bust-style statue sits downtown outside the Orillia Opera House. I grew up hearing his music on the radio and this song was one of my favourites.

Gordon Lightfoot | Sundown... What !!! You have never done his.... The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald ???? That one is an absolute must do. It is about a real tragedy on the great lakes. Maybe you just don't know that it is him. If you haven't done it yet I am sure someone will send it to you. I too love to hear these old songs. They really do take me back.

This was a big hit in the UK in 1974. He had a wonderful voice. Remember hearing him on Radio 1, but we never saw him in England. As a 14 year old, voice broken, I felt I could sing along to this song in perfect harmony, just like him (couldn't really) x

I thought to myself, there's no way Donna doesn't know this song, and I was correct!!!
My parents would play Gordon Lightfoot albums at their Family gatherings, so I grew up hearing his music. He was an iconic Canadian Artist, who sadly passed away last May.
Even though I didn't appreciate it at the time, I certainly do now... And just like Donna, it reminds me of those times, and *I Like It!!!*

Hi 3 Gen. A few songs by Gordon Lightfoot that I like are "Alberta Bound (1988 version)", "Rainy Day People", "Old Dan's Records", and "Carefree Highway". 👋🏻🇨🇦

    • @user-sm3ii5dk1u

Everyone in Canada thinks Alberta Bound is about Alberta, but it is a song about easterners giving up hope on their economy and pogie and lowering themselves to head out to Alberta where the income is "easy." Not much love in this Alberta Born old dude for Gordon or, for that matter the other Gord... (Downie).

I'm kinda late, you did this reaction a couple of weeks ago but you are the first people in the US that I have seen a reaction to Gordon Lighfoot that knew who he was!!!! It made me happy to hear that !!!! He was absolutely beloved up here!! I see in the comments that lots of people have given you suggestions for other songs, so I don't need to add more. Somebody mentioned the connection with Kathy Smith/John Belushi. Most of his songs had some connection to his personal life, not always apparent if you don't know about him personally. One that didn't really is The Canadian Railroad Trilogy. That he was asked by the government to write about Canada for our 100th birthday celebrations and it's musical genius. 👍👍👍Three big thumbs up for you all from the Great White North!!

This may have already been mentioned, but Professor Of Rock did a video on this song a while back on his RUclips channel. The story behind the song is very interesting. Gordon and his lady friend at the time were staying in a cabin for him to concentrate on song-writing. The lady was bored and insisted on going out on the town. Gordon started imagining her cheating with some guy she met that he dubbed "Sundown". The interesting thing is that the lady friend was the same woman who several years later gave John Belushi a fatal cocktail of drugs and went to prison.

The woman he sings about in the satin dress in the "room where you do what you don't confess" is the same woman who injected the drugs that killed John Belushi, in another "room where you do what you don't confess." Just to add some cultural and character background. Never liked this particular "Canadian Icon."
