Happy New Year! While I'm watching this, I just wanted to say thank you for all you do. I switched to Linux years ago after watching your videos, and I really can't say thanks enough. It's a drag to see the times a changin' in that regard, but I really just wanted to say right on and all the best to you in 2024!

I second those sentiments. Without Joe's videos I'd still be using Windows.

I understand your comments related to your content - you should post what you enjoy - if that's Linux or if that's audio equipment that's fine. I'll try to catch what I can and I still enjoy your channel. I got into records a few years ago but I also enjoy my music :) I pick up alot of CDs still at thrift stores and digitize them for my own personal collection.

I think you would be disappointed by the Pro-Ject Elemental. Its build is very lightweight and minimal. I'm surprised you had problems with the DC Carbon. They're usually good 'uns

The EVO is just not a very flexible design. Mine had issues, as well. If you like what you get then I guess it would be a good table. The Elemental appeals to me from a minimalist design point of view... I would guess audio-wise it's not that great. :)

The Teac X Series reel decks are some of the most bullet proof consumer decks I have seen. I would seek one out today if I wanted the format.
I have and regularly use the digital tracking force meter than is in your picture. The internal firmware is a bit snarky but it does work well.
Now your esteemed opinion is requested. If you compare the sound of a 1980s or 90s commercial FM station that had all the toys and knew how to use them to a current day station that also has all the toys and knows how to use them how would you compare the two sounds? What are they doing right today more so than then and vise versa?
Thanks and enjoyed the photo album video.
May you and yours have a happy healthy fulfilling new year.

The modern digital stuff can sound very good but it rarely does. There simply is not the same attention to detail as there was back then. That equipment needed tuning and attention to keep sounding good. Modern digital stuff just runs and if you set it properly it can sound awesome. Personally, I prefer the old sound, though. The source material sounded better. :)

    Hi Joe,
Just came across your channel by accident and have been enjoying the videos. I just watched the video you did on press vs molded 45rpms, which I thought was interesting. But, this leads me to a question.
My father worked for Polydor in Hamburg from 1957 to 1971. In 1971 he moved to the Philips and Siemens joint venture Phonogram, where he stayed until he retired in 1998.
Polydor at the time was doing the pressings for a number of US labels as was Phonogram for their West German and European releases.
They would get sent copies of the US pressings. And he and the other engineers would complain about how bad 45rpms would sound. His superior at the time told him when they went to do a pressing from the tape that was sent over from what ever label to re-EQ. I know friends he had at EMI in the UK would do the same.
My dad kept a copy of every LP and 45 and EP he worked on and the US pressings that were sent. Both the US pressings and ones my made by Polydor and or Phonogram sound totally different. he told me a story of when someone from Columbia was visiting them and heard the Polydor pressing and was shocked and said how the West German pressing was far superior.
In 1971 my dad went to Japan for 6 months to help set up Polydor Records Japan. And many of the engineers that came from Toshiba Records (EMI today) who joined Polydor Japan use to do the same thing.
When I was buying singles in the 1980s. When they were from the US I honestly found them inferior to ones I was getting from the UK or German, Dutch and French pressings.
Is there a reason for this?

My guess would be that it was because the US is such a large market. Record companies here concentrated on getting the product out as quickly as possible. Pressing quality just had to be "good enough" to please the masses. I think European and Asian record buyers demanded a higher standard and they got it.

I had to take it down. I made some big mistakes I didn't catch until shortly after it was up.
