"I like talking about people who don't have any power." Using his celebrity to champion those who can't defend themselves. That's why I fucking love Stephen Colbert.
Stephen Colbert earned my respect with that quote "I like talking about people that don't have any power", really hits home for me since my dad was an immigrant farm worker. He worked his ass off to give me a better life.
my respect for him hit a all time high. Like it was soul-filling hearing him say something like that. Lately I've been following him more and more on late night vs Jimmy fallon. He stands up for the little guy. I think he'd be a pretty awesome leader. would def vote for him for his ethical and moral views
I doubt this invitation that was extended to Mr. Colbert ultimately did much good, but you've gotta hand it to him for having the balls to walk in to Congress and do what he did, lol! I loved it!
im sure he wondered why as well, that chairwoman is probably a mess. easily all the republicans wondered why the nonsense thru invitation, and even some democrats as well. in fact, i wouldnt be surprised if the chair that invited him was the only person in that room that thought this was productive on taxpayer money.
To people complaining about how a comedian is testifying in congress about immigration, may I remind you that back in the day, only a court jester can joke at the lord of the manor's expense.

+B9King937 Stay hydrated and work, not that hard. Don't forget Colbert worked for a week and he sits in a chair all day. It isn't as bad as people think to work on a farm. I would take the job picking and planting vegetation (which I did when I was 16).
Sure people should stay hydrated. They should work hard. They should also respect the rights for safety and fair pay for immigrant workers that are taking those jobs.
Which they don't understand. I enjoy it when they come to a nation doing what I did and ask for fair pay and safety. I got water and got payed min wage (was like $6.50 and no overtime pay). Nothing more, nothing less.
Well it's not like they couldn't change things to work differently. In Texas some hotels have a misting system for guests to walk threw on the way to their cars so I don't get why you wouldn't do that with these fields considering you have to water them anyway. Than again I feel like you could automate the fields entirely. It wouldn't be cheap of coarse but you could just set it up one row a year until you don't need workers there anyway. Yeah, I know I'm sure there is no easy way to do that but I didn't say it would be easy just doable in time.
Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative - doesn't matter. American. And as Americans we ENCOURAGE debate. We WELCOME it. And then we come to CONSENSUS. Don't like debate or compromise and consensus? I hear North Korea is hiring.

I look back to the ones who can sit back and watch this horror of a reality we live in today, when they have the power to do what is right. This country is totally fucked and I don't know if we can fix it. Where is the humanity? And now that Colbert is gone who will save us?
Honestly I do not see myself working in the fields. So I commend anyone who has taken that task as their main source of means. Those people deserve a just compensation for their hard work.
May Lord God Almighty bless Stephen Colbert and his family! I believe he did something right for people that work to bring that good salad to his table! I don't see very many people born in USA working in agriculture, farms etc anymore
It is November 27, 2020, 10 years later, we as an nation still ignore this issue and 50% of us made the same statement: We want them here to pick our produces, AND we want them out for they are illegal. Wake up and do something. They are human too.
So admiring how these 2 classy people having civilized talk about the issue How embarrassing US Congress has turned into today is everyone fault, for not doing anything to stop it.
Bravo, Stephen. Jesus cares for "the least of these." Not just for the least of these, but he also pays attention to the least of these when no one else does. Democrat or Republican, not sure how anyone who claims to be a Christian can possibly refuse to have compassion on migrant workers.

It's not using it as an entertainment platform, it's using the unique tone and significance of a voice to get a message across. Stephen Colbert came in character, as an entertainer as well, and he brought up excellent points.
He is talking about people who come here as day workers because we, the U.S., makes it so difficult for them to get their visa's; they accept the conditions b/c they need a pay check not b/c it's a great job or easy work. They pay taxes which they don't benefit from in any way..unless you consider long hours, poor working conditions and minimal pay a benefit. They should be able to get work visa's so they can have real employment that affords them the same rights/benefits we're all entitled to.

Then they shouldn't be allowed to be here for the day to work either. If they are not good enough to meet our standards then we should not be exploiting them on a daily basis.
I agree. I HATE it when people do the jobs that I sure as hell don't want to do. Damn those people that would work in over 100 degree heat when no one else will to provide us with products that we love. Seriously though, I don't agree with illegal border crossing. BUT if someone does cross illegally, work the jobs we don't want to, AND prove they are better than most americans then why the hell should we have the nerve to ask them to leave after all that?
Maybe, just maybe, the Farmers should, I don't know,PAY MORE. I have a job for someone, clean my house for $3. No takers? Better get someone from a poor country to do it.
@TheVigilante2000 As I've been a farmer I can tell you it is the most hard working and unrewarding job I've ever had. There are so many restrictions...the government takes so much out...it makes it almost impossible to make a profit. I've worked for under minimum wage while I was there....you gotta do what you gotta do to keep the farm going. When the rain doesn't come at the right time...or something out of millions of things go wrong does..there goes more profits. There is never a day off

So either there has been a massive wage hike I'm not aware of. Or she was including "illegal immigrants" as the "Californians" being so put upon by our govt. Yes they might be Californians because they dwell there.
If an immigrant comes here illegally and becomes a criminal get rid of them. If they come over here illegally and do cheap work that almost no american will do in punishing conditions and not complain about it AND refrain from criminal activity (which is something most americans fail to do) then why the hell should they have to leave? Why would we have the nerve to say "get the hell outta here" if they PROVE that they are more willing to work harder than most of us just to care for their family?
In Australia, teenagers and backpackers do these kind of picking jobs. I fail to see why young Americans would not take the opportunity for employment if paid a fair wage. Elsewhere in the world it is normal practice.
Man, no one knows how hard being Mexican-American can be, except apparently Stephen Colbert, and other Mexican-Americans. The way things are now? It's the modern Jim Crow. Vote Democrat, please. For the love of god vote Democrat. They don't know what the hell they're doing, but at least their hearts are in the right place...more or less.

@TheVigilante2000 I would agree, if only farmers weren't so entirely dependent on the weather and increasingly expensive equipment just to stay competitive with the mega-farms that are slowly killing the little guy - factors they have zero control over.
I don't necessarily agree. I mean, ideally we would all pay attention to variety of issues for the sake of the issues alone, but when issues get forgotten, no reason not to get help from public figures. Plus, I don't think clbert was brought in as a pundit, not at all. I don't think Colbert himself would agree with that. It's similar to how Michael Jackson raised issues for Africa, Bono raised awarness to diff. crisis in world, "Artists for Haiti/Africa" tried to do etc.. no?
@BUDx2 Because Fox is recognized as a major station where people watch their favorite shows, and therefore the numbers are extremely skewed because people watch their local news after their favorite shows. CNN and MSNBC simply do not have that kind of viewer following. Silly guy.
While I personally am against illegal immagration and believe we should have a lot stricter border control, I absolutely agree with Stephen in this instance. How can we as conservatives go crying to illegal immigrants to come work one of the more taxing jobs in the nation today but they have no rights. I just gotta be honest, that sounds like the same kind of slavery our nation fought a whole war over. It just not fair.
we need to do away with sales tax that is on money recirculated into the economy and instead tax money that is stashed away at a higher rate and i like the idea of a high flat tax with a high minimum wage to combat the poor from making below a standard any full time employee should make instead
@HHOJ And them MAYBE they should go out of business. If you can't make money AND pay your workers a fair wage, you should charge more money for you product or go out of business. That is how capitalism works. Now we have a system that forces you to break the law or go out of business.
@HHOJ For weather there is a little thing called crop insurance. As for being competitive vs. big farms, well that is more fundamental as to how the world works. You don't have a right to be a for profit farmer. If you can't make a profit, change your business model or go OOB. Simple.

I don't think illegals do the work they do Americans won't do
It's the farmer's that don't want to pay
And is the people like you who demands affordable food... or do you perfer to pay 20 USD for an apple? slave labor is always the best option.
Yep, Colbert is right up there with Elmo.
How dare you!
Huge.
It just not fair.
the conditions exist regardless of legality of entrance to the country. Where is the logica fallacy?
we need to do away with sales tax that is on money recirculated into the economy and instead tax money that is stashed away at a higher rate and i like the idea of a high flat tax with a high minimum wage to combat the poor from making below a standard any full time employee should make instead
@HHOJ And them MAYBE they should go out of business. If you can't make money AND pay your workers a fair wage, you should charge more money for you product or go out of business. That is how capitalism works. Now we have a system that forces you to break the law or go out of business.
as i began to write the same comment as u, i noticed you beat me to it. so here's my reply, and thumbs up.
@HHOJ For weather there is a little thing called crop insurance. As for being competitive vs. big farms, well that is more fundamental as to how the world works. You don't have a right to be a for profit farmer. If you can't make a profit, change your business model or go OOB. Simple.
You think those days were hard, situations were dire, well, here we are, 2017
LOL KEY AND PEELE
