I am not very computer minded. But It is so easy to watch all my favourite channels without a licence and all legal. It feels fantastic not to just sit back and complain about the BBC, but to take Action. I never thought I would have the nerve or confidence! But I am LICENCE FREE and learned so much about the BBC scam to make us all conform to buying that LICENCE TAX. 👍

When I cancelled my licence recently I found the call handler fairly good. I didn't get any of the nonsense about needing a licence for Netflix etc, or threats of house calls from the goons. She just asked why I was cancelling, asked if I planned on watching live television in the future, to which I said no, and that was about it. I did say I thought it was disgraceful that the only legal way to stop funding the BBC was to have to go without all live television, and that was it.

Its important to be polite. I always advise this to people when cancelling your TV licence. One IMPORTANT step this video neglected though, is requesting that your name be taken out of their database AND requesting this be confirmed IN WRITING.
If they need to send correspondance later on in the future they can send it to "The Occupier" as you will no longer be using their services and no nonger wish to contract with them. If that changes in the future, you will notify them.
Remember folks, the TV licence is tied to an address and they do not need your name to send letters to a NON-CUSTOMER.
    Remember to be polite! :D
You may still get letters from them often. However, you can stop this (up to TWO YEARS) by requesting that they stop sending you harassing letters. Mention that you feel harassed by them.(if true) But you dont have to make up excuses. The fact that you asked them to stop is enough reason. You can ask them to confirm this IN WRITING as well. Be polite!
Alternatively, you have the option of letting them waste their £££ sending you post. I used to ask them to stop sending letters, but nowadays, I let them waste their time and £££. Their letters go directly into the recycle bin!
    Its a small victory. ;p

it would be great if it could be over in two years but unless enough people cancel and defund the BBC then we most likely will be stuck with the tax until their charter expires in 2027.
When I cancelled ours I had to ring them because they said the request for my direct debit had already been presented to my bank and unless I reinstated it and they received that months payment they couldn't process my request.
When I rang the woman she said my licence was cancelled on the day I requested them to, seems they were just trying to get another months money. Anyway all sorted for two years and then they can do one, I'll not be having any more contact with them. The woman on the phone was very pleasant and helpful to be honest.

When we moved over 20 years ago, we decided not to have a TV. A few months later letters from TV Licensing began to arrive; at first we ignored them, knowing we didn't need a licence anyway, but then decided to phone to let them know we had no TV. We have our address but NOT our name. & promised to get a licence if we got a TV. We wrongly assumed that was that, but some months later, we began getting letters again; one each month. Every so often we would contact them again & the letters stopped for a while. Now they go straight into the recycling. Only once in over 20 years did someone call. They were shown an ancient TV incapable of receiving TV, which had an integral DVD player. They agreed we didn't need a licence, but even then, after an interval letters began again. Why should the onus be on people like us to waste a lot of time & money to let them know? If you didn't run a car, would DVLC keep harrassing you to get a licence? It's insane.

Presumably they are flooded with cancellers and want to deter you by blocking the online form and forcing you to phone. I was polite with the caller and she was polite with me. She's only doing a (poorly paid I guess) job. She asked why: I said I hadn't watched TV for 6 months, then she briefly gave me the legal warnings, and I acknowledged them, and she said a letter would come verifying the cancellation.

No, it's like stopping gym payments without telling them. They will contact you to see if you made a mistake or if you've decided not to go to the gym again. You have no contract or ongoing relationship with a shop, so it's not in the same category.

    • @timlong7289

This is correct. If you pay by direct debit then just cancel it at the bank. You do not have to inform TV licensing that you don't need a license. It's up top them to prove that you do, and of course they will not be able to, unless you say something self-incriminating or allow an inspector into your house on a fishing expedition. You do not have to do anything and you do not have to let them in unless they have a court warrant (which they will not be able to get without probable cause and not having a license is not probable cause). Just. Don't. Pay. However, if you do need a license then just get one. Its not smart to deliberately flout the law. For the record, I've been legally license free for over 10 years at my current address and longer at previous addresses. There is a lot of power in knowing and understanding the rules.

If you want to be harassed by people trying to determine whether you are using their service without paying for it then ignoring them is a great way to achieve that. A lot of people report being harassed by the BBC, but I have been license free for more than a decade and never been harassed. The people who get harassed are those who act the way you advise. I advise people not to ignore the letters, to tell the truth, and be courteous. It worked for me.

@@shaunpatrick8345 Well each to their own. I don't disagree with you but I also don't think a TV license is an ongoing contract. Its something you were required to do by law so cannot be a contract. But you are right, if you are already in a relationship with TV licensing and they know who you are, then you may as well cancel with them (assuming the web site works and they haven't sacked all the call centre staff using the excuse of coronavirus, of course). But, if they don't know who you are and are addressing you as "the legal occupier" then there is very little up side to changing that. I don't like their bully tactics with threatening letters clearly designed to intimidate, I won't play the game on their terms. We are the sons and daughters of Robin Hood.

It's not a request from you to them. It's an obligation/instruction. No contract. No exchange of goods and services. Their 'services' are not required. You have to know your rights and lay down the law to them. With a caveat of informing them/putting them on notice that any Implied Rights of Access have been Withdrawn. Any (unauthorised/unexpected/uninvited) 'Visits' by them will be considered as a Breach of your Human Rights, Trespass and Harassment. By stepping onto your property (they will argue, it's not your property if you rent etc) they will be Entering Into Contract and you will be Issuing them with a Fee Schedule and Billing them for your time as you instructed them and made it explicitly clear they do not have the Right to Contact you/knock on your door etc. You can state. No Junk Mail. Royal Mail/Addressed Mail Only. You Fee Schedule should include Disposal/Recycling of Letters/Leaflets under Administrative/Admin Charges. They don't have a leg to stand on. You are acting lawfully.

Cancelled mine by following your earlier videos. Totally agree, be polite to ALL their staff. They are doing a job like we all do to live and eat. They aren’t the ones making these crazy rules - focus criticism at the BBC management.

I utterly despise the BBC and everything involved with it, but to be fair, ALL UK television is absolute crap.Last good BBC show? maybe Ashes to Ashes, last good ITV show? er... maybe their News is less 'controlled'?

I’m so pleased I found your channel as I’ve been wanting to cancel my tv license for awhile now but I didn’t have the courage as I didn’t have the information that this is something I can do. I’m just off the phone with them and cancelled. I’ve cancelled my direct debit plus I’m getting a refund so all good. They told me to ignore any letters and they will contact me in two years to see if anything has changed. Thanks again for providing us with sensible information 😃👍🏼

I live in Australia, no such thing as TV licence. Our Local channels are free, always has been . l've stopped watching local TV channels 10 months ago when l got Netflix, Foxtel Now and Disney Plus. I don't like watching local TV channels, they have commercials.

    VERY good.
I think it might be an idea to venture into some comedy show as you're very gifted.
I think to attract broader appeal, the TV license sketch should be part of a broader take on government nonsense in general (whichever party they represent).

"Hello, I dont need a fishing license. I don't go fishing and have no intent to go fishing"
"Ok sir, we'll be sending an inspector around to check you're not fishing for Marlin, Trout or Halibut"
    "What??"
Agreed, no point giving the call centre peeps a hard time or being rude to them. Door step inspectors? Thats a different matter.... :-D

Interesting video, thanks. I cancelled my licence (by phone) a few weeks ago and the person on the phone was very pleasant but did try a couple of scare tactics on me but I just pointed out I have no reason to watch live TV, also I have no terrestrial tv receiving set up so there was no point in having a licence. They ended by offering me a refund (I paid for it in full last year) for the remaining time and it was processed very quickly. Since then the letters I receive aren’t so pleasant but I’m happy for them to waste money and resources on a futile act of bully tactics as I’m thick skinned and if they do visit it should be entertaining as I live in a WW2 bunker, so they’ll either not find me or they may feel intimidated just by walking upto the door.

What if they take you to court

    • @metalboozeweed
      @metalboozeweed 3 года назад +4

@@Sophia-bt2lr They cannot take you to court without evidence. The vast amount of prosecutions are from people self incriminating, do not talk to them, do not give them ANY information, do not do anything silly like watch live tv in plain view. If you call them to tell them you don't need one they will continue to harass you and send enforcement officers anyway. I have never had a single visit so far (that I'm aware of), and if I did I would just close the door. Also don't be afraid of warrants, they are incredibly rare, around 100 a year. Simply owning a tv is not enough evidence, they have to prove that you are watching live tv.

It is essential to cancel an unwanted television licence on a property. If you simply stop paying for an existing licence, the premises become unpermitted for the purpose of using TV receiving equipment due to non-payment (rather than cancellation) and that legally unsatisfactory situation creates an entirely unnecessary payment backlog. Consequently, when anyone applies to relicense the premises, such as a new occupant, they are liable to pay for the backlog too! So do actually cancel it!

If you were a shoe shop would you leave all of your shoes on the street in front of the shop with no security guards or cameras and then knock on people's doors asking to search their property if shoes go missing? This is how the BBC runs its business.
