This is slightly more difficult with the language barrier, but I feel the consistency and authenticity comes in the lyrics and message of (G)I-dle songs. They’ve always had a strong message around individuality, being true to yourself and female empowerment. They certainty do the concept changes from song to song as that is how K-pop works, but it is always around this consistent message.
“It’s neither man nor woman, just me I-DLE” on their latest single, “Tomboy,” to make their loudest statement yet. “What we want to convey,” leader Soyeon tells Teen Vogue, “is that we don’t attribute our actions to gender or age. Because I’m me is why I am, and why I act the way I do.”
soyeon is definitely hyuna's legitimate first born lmao her presence, tone, attitude and that 0 fucks vibe with a heart of gold. And she's a true boss, this girl does IT ALL
@@skyofwar123 You have to respect that they’re her predecessors and her inspiration. She herself said she looks up to CL and that she’s her dream collaboration. It’s NOT an insult to compare them. All of them are charismatic, and rebelliously moving differently than most female artists in the industry. I haven’t listened to Hyuna much recently but the CL influence is there for me, as a Blackjack myself. Talented self-written rapping and exceptional vocals with energetic, charismatic and powerful performances that make you see her. Soyeon isn’t the only person that falls under that umbrella. Don’t disrespect her predecessors just to gas her up. She’s still her own artist, no one is taking that away from her by saying her talents are comparable.
In one of the interviews.Soyeon said that G-IDLE is currently in a process of "REBRANDING" due to the changes in their groups line up. She said that "Tomboy" was really their last shot and their own company even told them that. They changed a little bit of their distinct sound in honor of the old G-Idle with six members
@@xtianchen7977 i think we are not on the same page. I know g-idle since debut and what happened to them this past year ( they under went a pretty long hiatus as a group and one member was removed ) I suggest you watch more of their interviews and read articles about them .
So they’re basically pulling a 4Minute on them? They said the same to them and said Act 7 was their last shot and it was and they disbanded. They’re so weird for giving their idols this option when the company is responsible for their success💀
@@xLuminah that's so true. 4 minute deserve so much better. Cube is really hopeless 💀. They already have soyeon as an amazing producer, and these charismatic talented girls but they still sucks at managing them . The company will no longer about this group's songs but they still crossed them .
I get what yall were saying about the concepts and putting on masks and not showing their true self! But Gidle do show themselves in my opinion! In every comeback they switch up the concept harshly but they put their own spin on it and make it their own! They have their own colors and own spirit in every concept! 🥰🥰🥰
Amazing guys love your reaction, yes one member left becaus of a scandal, and yes the middle girl u talkin about is soyeon the leader and she directs writes and produces this whole album and their entire discography, after a year of hiatus this became a viral hit in Korea
Gidle has their own identity, they not rebel but they just wont stick to the same thing over and over. But identity wise you would know it is gidle style, image, brand, hook etc
The basis of the song and the meaning behind the comeback is them rebelling against fitting into a mold and being restricted as just “a girl group” since girl groups aren’t expected to write or produce and have their own ideas, etc. It’s not just a quick concept/gimmick, it’s a statement.
the missing member is soojin she left the group because of a high school bullying scandal she was accused of and the company didn't even say if it was true or not they just deleted her
It was in middle school and both the company and soojin herself denied it wasn't true but it happened when she was 12 (10 years ago) so she can't find solid evidence to support her ground that's why she leave the group so it won't affect the group reputation Btw BOTH soojin and accuser sides can't find solid prove so the police drop the case that's why soojin choose to leave
@@bunnymanju4617 Soojin didn't chose to leave on her own accord her contract was terminated when her and CUBE's side couldn't refute the claims saying that the other party was lying or making things up. The police didn't find any false claims or inconsistencies with the accusers side.
@@xmochilove I think that person meant she left the group on her own back in august and in feb this year cube terminated her contract. She did promise she will leave the group if she couldnt proof herself, but it's still a 50-50 case both side got no solid evidence indeed.
(G)I-DLE's Yuqi's solo music is actually heavily influenced by rock, so it's unsurprising IDLE would eventually do a rock concept. What's really punk about this concept aside from the superficial aspects is actually the lyricism, which (G)I-DLE have always been brazen with since their inception, unlike most girl groups. (G)I-DLE are the only girl group in the history of k-pop to produce all their title tracks, and since their third mini album have taken part in producing ALL their songs in their albums. Lyrically, Soyeon is a genius and this song may translate better to you if you read the lyrics and look at it in the context of Korea--where a mysoginistic president was just elected and being a feminist and doing anything "masculine" still receives criticism from the general public.
That discussion is very interesting and i can see why this constant "concept change" for groups can be seen as an "issue". The thing is that there are a lot of groups who kept the same concept for years since debut but because people started to complain about these groups doing the "same sh*t everytime", a lot of these artists were kind of forced to change and switch concepts which would make them seem like they "have grown". I can only think about twice who had a very cutesy and bubbly concept until fancy. The truth is i don't know if this is specific to the kpop industry but personnally i really enjoy watching my favorites artists touch on a lot of genres and try new things but it's true that there are not a lot of them who can still keep their essence and authenticity while doing it.
You are very true! Agree with everything! And in my opinion Gidle is one of the groups who can make every concept their owns and do it in the Gidle way and you still see THEM and their brand although it’s a totally different concept yk 🥰
its funny because before i used to be a fan fan of twice because of their songs and their sound and EVERYONE in those times were like that, "again the same, again the same" and i was like beech shut up i love it, eventually they change it their sound and i slowly left twice and his music 😿 The same with gfriend but they always have their sound
G idle is so great and so talented, Soyeon does produce and write pretty much everything! When you get a chance please react to to PURPLE KISS! Mamamoo's lil sister group, from the same label, so expect vocals and they also write and produce their songs like two of their singles. maybe an episode on them. They are the monster rookies of the 4th gen. Debut: "Ponzoña" then "Zombie" and now "memeM" all of the songs are completely different but still with the same concept of the 7 witches.
I really miss old riVerse! They used to be passionate and happy to react to kpop! Now everyone is too serious and just idk! GIDLE is one of those kpop groups that they used to react to and for them to know nothing about them kinda upset me! Monroe would’ve loved to react to this!😩😩😩
Identity in K-pop is something that actually doesn't work, because they have eras and concepts each comeback and well, you can say Soyeon is a genius for doing that so well every comeback. And to be honest, I really enjoy a group that is so talented and can change every now and them and you know, they have their own styles in a way.
This song is about "Don't identify me to any category, i am whom i am, just me, idle" and yet you guys said they don't have any identity, and i found it very irony. Not try to be offences, just said my personal thought. Fun fact is...Idle never ever came back with same music genre, not even once.If you listen all thier cameback song one by one starting from their debut song Latata to Tomboy, you will be amaze. And what's more important are...all the cameback songs, are written by same person, include lyrics and compose, even creating the concept, all done by Soyeon herself ALONE. If you knew Idle well enough, you will know the greatest strength of this group are Soyeon.
10:02 what an interesting discussion! It's something that I can agree but also something I can understand. [In my opinion] I think the main thing about idols not really having "authenticity" or "brand" is because of how saturated KPop is. A lot of groups just come out all of a sudden with similar concepts & for groups to stand out, they would do different concepts, as we all know how competitive the industry is. BLACKPINK and TWICE for example. Especially during their early years, they were always being compared to 2NE1 and SNSD (respectively) for how similar their concepts and even number of members. The best example to have a "brand" for themselves is no other than BIGBANG. I would say them being on hand with their music probably helped them find their sound or brand. Most, or if not, 97% of the idol groups from then to even this time, doesn't have a say to anything.
That ending discussion was on point. WTF is Dizz such a genius. 💁🏻♂️ I haven’t had to think this deep with such great analysis since high school lol. I love that you were open to discuss K-pop from an artist/fan standpoint. Seeing these patterns and reflective moments really sparked a lot of thoughts in my mind. I’m sure others feel the same and agree with you too! Not sure if I’m just YG biased but I do feel like their artists tend to have more of that identity because of the freedom they get when creating music. Though some are still produced by their main producers, they get to add in their own colors to the song. Even stray kids from JYP, you definitely feel that each of their songs are authentic more so to themselves rather than catering to today’s typical music (aka TikTok).
YESS CMON SKYE SWEETNAM Actually yujin from IVE covered tangled up in me by skye sweetnam so I think youre right that style is getting popular in korean now Also in terms of authenticity in kpop I definitely agree how the concepts can feel like a thing veneer that doesnt really cut through. But with idle in general all their songs are written and produced for the most part by that girl Dizz was talking about (Soyeon), and I think the message itself is sort of "rock n roll" and fits with the vibe of "sticking it to the man" like Zac said. Their name was originally gidle but this comeback they changed it to idle because they dont want to be seen as a "girl group". And the meaning of the word tomboy in the song is about screwing the whole stereotype of being a girl especially in the kentertainment scene and not being restricted to the small bubble of what a "girlgroup" can do (you can see at the end of the video with the ken doll holding the balloon with G on it and it goes pop). Being neither man nor woman (just me, idle) and just slaying! Love your reactionn
Ok soo there were actually 6 members and one of the members got kicked out called SOOJIN(my bias) 🥺✨from there freaking company because some kind of false highschool bully charges were applied on her... Still missing herrr... The comeback is not complete without her!!
It could be false so it’s not misinformation. There was just no evidence to prove she was innocent and since her name was already tarnished in Korea, the need for evidence was immense. Reasons for there being little evidence was because it supposedly happened a long time ago when she was like 12 years old or younger. From the evidence and the way the accuser has spoken of Soojin, I don’t think she is guilty. Unfortunately Gidle are under cube entertainment and they don’t protect their artists whatsoever. They literally kicked Hyuna and Edawn out and for what I- But tbh they escaped Cube. I think if Gidle were under another company Soojin would still be with us!
i’m SO glad you all are reacting to tomboy!! this was their first song in about 14 months, the girls have been through so much last year with losing a member and this song was their sort of “rebranding” as a group, but the concept switch itself is very gidle. they’ve always been known to change genres and try something new so i’m not surprised that this was such a stark difference from their last song! i highly encourage looking up the lyrics, they’re so assertive and in your face which is amazing especially knowing the history of women’s right and feminism in korea. they broke so many records with this song in korean music charts and i’m glad that they’ve found their footing now after such an uncertain time. i also think you all would enjoy their new album and their older discography!
I usually like your take, and I'm glad you liked Tomboy, but this time one thing you said bothered me; let me see if I can change your mind. "Where is _your_ identity?" For (G)I-DLE, it is in their music, their voices and their attitude. They pride themselves on making all of their music themselves (aside from several songs on the debut album). There is always a co-producer, but the job separation is usually such that they mostly just do technical stuff (like buying/renting equipment, picking samples etc) and finishing arrangement and mastering touches, while the overwhelming majority of the creative process lies in the (G)I-DLE songwriter line (mostly Soyeon - the "main girl" - but she's been mentoring the others and two of the others also now have several songs each each under their belt). For the vast majority of (G)I-DLE songs, Soyeon has conceived, written and co-produced them, and had a say in the MV concept, costumes, choreography... basically every single part of the production. She also often takes experimental risks, in that many of the songs are surprising to a degree if you compare it to the rest of K-pop. It's not that they are doing something different than others (though they are); they are doing something different in practically every song. Uh-Oh is completely different from Oh My God which is completely different from Senorita which is completely different from Tomboy, which is... you get the picture. You're talking about how rock and roll is freedom; Soyeon has as much freedom as is possible in K-pop without founding your own label. As to the voices, Soyeon as their leader made a rather controversial decision, she asked the members not to take vocal lessons. She saw that they all have very unique voices, and thought that using the vocal teachers that the whole industry uses would just iron them into sounding just like everyone else. And she was right. (G)I-DLE are instantly recognisable. All of their songs are rather different, but two things stay the same: they continue to experiment, and you always know when it is (G)I-DLE singing. No-one else really sounds like Yuqi, or Minnie, for example. And this feeds back into them being self-producing. Whereas most other songs of other groups are bought from songwriters and then the parts are distributed to the members as best they can, Soyeon writes the songs with specific people and specific voices in mind. She even writes lyrics in such a way to make it easy to pronounce for each member, keeping in mind that half (well, over half now) of her group are foreigners. She treats her members as instruments, and deploys them in each song strategically. And finally, the attitude. From the beginning, there is a running theme of all of their releases. First album: "I am" - this is who we are, we'll do what we do. Next one, "I made" - the pride of self-producing group. "I Trust" - trust your feelings, do what you think is right. "I burn" - express inner passion. "I never die" - despite others trying to bring us down, we survive, we excel. And in particular, with Tomboy, they reject the gender stereotypes - Kpop industry thinks we should be dressed like this, and sound like this, and behave like this, but fuck that noise, we refuse to be pigeonholed. From the beginning almost all of their songs have been rather unisex. They are obviously female; but they don't do "female songs", if that makes any sense. And also, this whole album has a lot more anger and sadness than their other work, but given that the last year has not been kind to them at all, it is exactly the sound I should have expected from them in retrospect. They _are_ angry, and they _are_ sad. I would much rather they were not; but given that they are, I am grateful to be able to hear it: genuine emotion. You're talking about eyeliner and clothing as identity... isn't this superficial? Shouldn't music matter more? It reminds me of a contestant on American Idol, Andrew De Leon, who came looking like a goth... but then proceeded to sing Puccini's O mio babbino caro; after hearing his amazing performance, would you classify him as a gothic rock singer, or as an opera singer? I should hope you'd choose the latter. Did Tomboy not _sound_ like an actual punk pop song? If it did... then where is the "shortcut"? In the west, I admit, fans are used to hearing the same thing from an artist, to the point that there will be an uproar should the artist decide to exercise a bit of their supposed "freedom" and try a new genre, like it happened to Linkin Park, for example. I do not think that is okay. If an artist decides to stick to a genre of their own free will, rather than because they are prisoners to their fan base, fine; but even so, why is that more respected than having the versatility to attack any damn genre you please? (G)I-DLE aren't dipping their toes in different genres and using "shortcuts" to make them believable. They create songs of all kinds, and they perform them _well._ More than almost any other group, (G)I-DLE is absolutely (G)I-DLE, whether there's graffiti, lions or church bells. I hope I didn't come as too aggressive, but I just don't think (G)I-DLE deserves that particular criticism at all; I hoped, with a bit more information, you might see it differently.
Your comment gave me life. You said it so damn well! 👏 I wanna take your comment and paste it all over RUclips for people to know what (G)I-DLE is all about.
Soyeon's inspiration comes from the members. And I hope everyone can read The interview from TEENVOGUE:“It’s neither man nor woman, just me I-DLE” on their latest single, “Tomboy,” to make their loudest statement yet. “What we want to convey,” leader Soyeon tells Teen Vogue, “is that we don’t attribute our actions to gender or age. Because I’m me is why I am, and why I act the way I do.”
Well said. It takes a lot of work and I don't think it's fair to say that something is disingenuous based on looks alone. I don't doubt that some labels force concepts on artists that don't prefer it, but there should be more research done before throwing out such a strong critique.
They want kpop idols to be "themselves" all the time, but if an actor portrays the same character in every single movie he or she would get mocked for it. In kpop, the visual medium is as important as the music, and every video tells a different story. That's why kpop companies have an Arts and Repertoire director that is in charge of the overall look of the group, and that changes from time to time for good reason. I honestly don't understand the criticism.
I kinda don't agree with dizz..I mean concepts are important..one can always change their concept...one of the many reasons I kinda stopped listening to so many kpop groups cox they got stuck to one concept..gets boring.. that's why I like listening to bts more.. sometimes skz,txt and twice...
@@janeoftarzan your opinion but I disagree..twice have different songs and that's why they are loved everywhere...their recent ones are even better like cry for me, breakthrough, love foolish,go hard, alcohol free, more and more, the feels, set me free etc...
When you guys say someone is missing during this comeback was Soojin. Because there was some rumors about her bullying a girl at school something like that.
the interesting thing is that Soyeon was part on a Survival show and she suffered a lot from mean comments calling her ugly, fat and etc, so she tackles those rebellious ideas on some of her songs. she did in "Lion" and also on "Tomboy". Also, i was really skeptical about the reason that she would call her group a "tomboy" on this song but then it came "it's neither a man nor woman. Just me IDLE" and I got completely SOLD!
I love the discussion that is being had here. I think this is why I either end up enjoying kpop groups or disliking/unstanning etc. There are groups that do and don't do the "mask"/new concept per comeback that I won't name names, but I will say the groups Stray Kids, ATEEZ, Everglow and *especially* Blackpink, I've ALWAYS felt that musically, they could harken their comebacks to their core identity. It just feels genuine from these groups. Wow. Thank you for putting it into words for me.
Dizz is totally right. In the recent years of kpop i realised that kpop is really just about image, but lacks IDENTITY. I like groups like Red Velvet that bounces arounds concepts but always do their own signature things like their harmonies and stuff. Kpop feels less and less about artists and more about performance.
He was definitely spot on about it, & you too with Red Velvet too! Getting tired of the stereotype mold, but more established groups like Red Velvet keep me coming back to K-POP with their solid identity.
@@Ian-hk8ck right???? Red Velvet has always been about the music they put out. When they are weird and quirky they show it with music, when they are sexy and powerful they also show that through music. All kpop nowdays is pure dance performance.
Yess this! I love when groups change their image and styles sometimes but keep the same identity. I didn’t know why I loved Stray Kids so much but this put it into words.
This is why I was such a Lovelyz fan. Like people called them too cutesy and boring but at least you knew who they were! They always served quality music and kept their signature style.
The member that was missing was Soojin, the Main Dancer. She was kicked out of the group and company due to some b*llying allegations that were later proven false. By the time they were proven false, it was too late since she had already been kicked out. She was the sexy blonde girl with the soft honey voice from Oh My God. Edit: Yuqi's solo music was pop-rock and her aesthetic is usually what you just saw in this music video. It's not that they are trying to be rock. Its that they are trying to emulate the energy that the member Yuqi (pink hair) usually emulates. She's cute but she's always been a tomboy that wears plaid and things like that. In the past, (G)I-DLE would always go for Soojin and Soyeon's aesthetic. But they tried something different. That's why, when watching the music video and looking at Yuqi, you can feel like she's a natural at this whereas Soyeon, Shuhua, Minnie, and ESPECIALLY Miyeon don't fit this concept.
Dizz you’re so right about everything you said! I hope no one takes it as “hate” it’s just the truth. I guess that’s the good and bad thing about kpop, they are willing to do many different concepts but nothing is better than authenticity. It resonates and it makes you remember them.
Zak talked about how the rock element kind of confused him because of the change of how g idle previously their style was but this is what kpop is all about. Kpop is about concept change, a group will comeback with a cute concept, cute clothing, dance and singing, next concept they are hard edge, edgy style, dancing and singing, next concept is sexy, I mean in kpop you hardly see the same concept or style stay the same. But in Idle's case they are a different group now with the just the 5 members, so I think they are taking a different direction, in music and style, they are reinventing themselves now as a basically a different group with the members they have now, and as a fan I'm glad , I mean we love Soojin and miss her but now it's time to support Idle as they move ahead from the past and to something new and greater. And with this comeback they are slaving, especially in the charts and winning all those awards.
The fact Soyeon was somehow afraid that this comeback will not be successful because of what happened in their group, but it turns out to be their most successful one by having a whopping 7 music show wins in their entire promotions. If you have the time, please react to their April 3 Inkigayo goodbye stage where they recreate their childhood photos as their outfits for their performance.
Dizz was spitting facts. Some kpop groups haven’t found their identity. And I definitely agree about saying Straykids as an example who has already found their identity.
@Leah, get rIVerse to react to Big Mama's Killing Voice video pleaseeee. I think you all would appreciate some old school K-R&B/soulful vocals. The video's a bit long, but most have watched it from beginning to end no problem because it was such a treat to have a veteran vocal group make a comeback with a feature on Killing Voice. :)
exo’s identity is vocals lolz, i mean i get your point but you have to remember that kpop is a industry that promotes changing to what’s on trend and that means going concept to concept in comparison to perhaps western groups
I don't agree with the identity thingy that regards concept. I love artists that change concept in every album. For example TS, she's been recreating her music in every album she made like 1989 is very different from Reputation, and Reputation to Lover and Lover to Folklore/Evermore. If artists don't change concepts, they will be irrelevant because people were starving in something new.
I loved the discussion about concepts vs. identity in k-pop - though I’ve been interested in k-pop for many years, I could never pinpoint where my disconnect was with A LOT of groups out there, but I think y’all have given me some insight! my favorite group is Red Velvet, and while on a surface level it’s because I enjoy their music, I also realize now it’s due to them always feeling authentic in their presentation, no matter the risks they take or the concepts they try. (not to make this about them, just a thought I had while listening to their conversation!) regardless, I rarely comment, but I always enjoy your content and discourse. thank you! ~
I really respect all of your opinions. I just wish Monroe was here, it would also be nice to hear what she has to say. Honestly, your feedback aren't really nice for me but I realize that you guys are all just stating what you believe. Totally understand your POV & just like how die hard you guys are with SKZ, we Neverlands feel the same towards our artist who can pull off different genres in god-tier performances. For me, SKZ & (G)I-DLE are the best self-producing kpop groups in the industry.

Soyeon has always had her own unique vibe and talent I’ve been in love with her since before she debuted with G idle! I would recommend looking at her solo releases if you really like her :)
from Oh My God to Tom Boy. you just have to know what are in the lyrics. thats why people buy into them and therefore breaking records eventhough they are not from a big company
Loved the convo! Now that we’re in 4th gen kpop, I can’t imagine how hard it is to establish an identity since it feels like everything’s been done before. Maybe that’s why groups are switching concepts so drastically. Recently one of the groups I’ve been following, Weeekly, switched up their concept from bright to edgy and I was very disappointed. I think a lot of these kpop groups are gonna do this and fail in the long run.
Eh, I don't think Tomboy is that different than when Britney switched it up and basically did her version of I Can't Get No Satisfaction, which I'm sure plenty of people criticized as well for I think obvious reasons. I get that it can be confusing when groups do wildly different concepts, or maybe it even seems fake, cringe, etc... I wouldn't look too deep into it, it's a bonus when there's deeper meaning or more creative control from the members, but I personally think that puts too much expectations for the genre. Although in the case of (G)I-DLE, they actually do have a fair amount of control, and I think this style is coming directly from them. It doesn't bother me regardless, I've been into kpop since 2008 and I guess I just see them as performers taking on various concepts... no different than the background dancers that may not have much choice as far as who they are performing with...? But it's not anyone's fault if they don't buy into it, I wasn't into Tomboy on my first listen, but it really grew on me. It bothered me at first that they're supposed Tomboys, but look still look super feminine, but being a Tomboy doesn't mean you can't look however you want, either. Also, it's not totally clear to me how far the concept of being a tomboy really goes in Korea, maybe it's more believable with women that still look very girly over there.
Dizz and Zac are so right. I think that's why you guys have been enjoying first and second gen more, there was less of a focus on concepts and more on showcasing talent.
I’ve been a Kpop fan since 2012/2013 now. And what Dizz and Zak said was totally correct. That’s probably why I’ve found it difficult to enjoy some groups. I figured I was just being old and picky. But no it’s this. On the upside though, some of the new emerging groups have given me hope. Groups like Purple Kiss, Billie, Aespa and IVE are slowly building that niche sound and aesthetic that sets them apart from the rest.
It's funny to me that they talk about identity and authenticity, kpop has always been entertainment, maybe in the second generation the groups had their own sound. But you have to remember that idols are products that the company uses and can discard at any time since the only purpose is to exploit them and get money. Why do you think there are more than 200 idols trained to learn to sing and dance. Some don't even want to be idols in the first place but are forced by their family. Although I understand the point of view. That's not what kpop has been about.
I agree so much with Dizz's point! Groups have lost their personality aspect in their music. I know a lot of themes are not up to them, but yeah, k-pop as a whole is not as enjoyable to me because of that.
As a kpop fan I really appreciate Dizz's perspective because that is the problem with a lot of the industry and has been since the beginning. Even the globally impactful group BTS is guilty of the concept thing, even recently with their western releases. But BTS also showed that they can be authentic to themselves and put out great music and you can see it in modern groups like Stray Kids. The kpop industry needs to realize that when they start letting their artists become more involved, they can connect better to their fans and it generally produces better art. G-idle is also an example of this but I feel like cube entertainment still constricts Soyeon on certain concepts and images for her to express herself with her lyrics and producing. I still love kpop and listen to it more than western pop because I feel like it has a lot of what I'm missing from western music but it's not perfect by any means and has a lot to learn and grow from.
So I am extremely late to this reaction... I actually just want to say thank you Leah for getting rIVerse to react to this song. This has been G-Idles most successful comeback to date and you guys are correct Soojin is missing. Unfortunately due to a bullying controversy, Soojin was removed from Idle and Cube as a whole. Her contract was terminated and now Idle is a team of 5. Soyeon does write Idle's albums usually. They are a self-producing group and are possibly the greatest of the new era. Soyeon's star power makes me think she is a new era HyunA. Also, HyunA and Soyeon are both from cube. Although HyunA is now in Pnation they know each other and the rapping style is inspired by HyunA. But yes this song has won so many accolades and I am proud of them. Also, I want to mention to Dizz in particular, that I also struggle to digest the newer generations' music because it is so concept heavy, and an Idol group's Identity is never clear because of this. Personally I still stand by the second generation because each group had a different style and genre of kpop and it was never concept heavy. They have authenticity. Obviously, we will see elements of black culture in kpop as that is the essence of Kpop if you ask me. The music was very very honest. Bigbang, 4minute, 2ne1, girls generation, kara, 2pm, super junior, b2st, bap, mblaq, vixx. You can tell these groups apart effortlessly.
This was a very interesting discussion. It’s like a light bulb went off on me when DIZZ was talking groups not having their own “identity”. As someone who was born and raised in the West (America), I see how he used Destiny Child as an example. In KPop, as they have a completely different story of how they came together compared to Destiny Child (obviously 😂), hearing the differences made perfect sense. As Destiny Child was your generation, Fifth Harmony was my generation. When you started talking about DC, I immediately thought of 5H. How 5H came to be was through a music show competition. For that, that’s where I thought of a similarity in KPop (in a way-ish 🤷🏾♀️). When groups changes their concept for every comeback, sometimes I do get…not so much overwhelmed but idk the word for it. However, when groups changes their concepts for their comebacks but still have their main story behind it like the core values of what their group is, I become more interested. So like DIZZ said, Stray Kids does that perfectly. Ateez also does it right since they still keep their “pirate concept”. Dreamcatcher is also a good group. Same with Aespa. As I’m typing, I’m realizing that those are some groups where it keeps “Dizz’s interests”. I put that in quotes because you let us know the real tea on how you feel and I love that 😂 So really my question is, even though this generation of Kpop doesn’t spark your interests as much and you talked about how they constantly change their concepts, do you think if groups still continued to change concepts but it flowed better from the previous comeback, would that change your perspective? To make more sense, say if a group’s storyline is trying to find the light at the end of the tunnel. For every comeback, they would changed their concept because they wanted to show a different emotion of what it took to get there. But in the back of your mind, you know their main storyline. Would that keep your interest in the group? I’m really curious. Sorry for this long comment. Hope this made sense because it made sense in my head 😂 PS. You are so right about when they do hip hop or R&B concepts, that’s they have to dress like it. Cornrows, Dreads, long gold chain…Elements of Black people 😐
U guys hit the nail on the head, there’s very few K-pop groups that I get the vibe of who they are as a group and hit there personas very well. For me personally I like G idle as a group , I watch a lot of there vlogs and I would say this song fits there personas very well, they are very sassy and some of them don’t like each other and it makes for great entertainment, they need their own show lol
I love this whole "take a concept to fit what we're vibing now" cuz is so true. A lot of groups focus alot on that and it almost feels like you can get no actual personality from them! It feels robotic and kinda takes away a lot of the beauty behind their work, especially when they're constantly changing to fit that new thing
I don't know, for me I love and appreciate so many genres and find that at different parts of my life or events going on around me a different mood or theme or aesthetic suits me and my feelings on a matter. If you scroll chronologically through my playlist I could clearly tell you what was going on in my life based on the genre my music became and the songs I added and played in heavy rotation. I think kpop stylists and companies lean into those differences in a song and makes it an entire concept to obviously help marketing and attention which is a side effect of capitalism but also has it's own joy imo because some people love aesthetics and fashion and makeup and dance as artforms as well. I think conceptualizing music and art within expectations of what is real music or sincere or fake is super limiting and disregards so many elements of the human experience. Also I'm pretty sure that I heard that Soyeon purposely wrote songs and concepts to suit different members personalities which is a whole other element of how can you narrow down a group with multiple people, particularly when several participate in the creative process into one set musical perspective? I think there is a lot of room to move and change and develop over time.
I think I agree. The Stans think you’re saying they’re like terrible or something but sometimes concepts don’t fit other members that well. It’s a difference in what American music values and what Korean music values. It’s just different. And sometimes they don’t match cross culturally
I both agree and disagree with the identity thing. For example, dreamcatcher (I’m not comparing them to anyone) has a identity of trying to merge rock/metal/punk into other genres of songs. With this it’s gives the music that they produce an almost added layer of richness. We are also able to be like “oh this is a dreamcatcher song.” However, at the same time K-pop is so saturated, has constant concept changes, and the market constantly has different things to cater to that sometimes it’s difficult to even stick to one concept. Ie; a cute concept girlgroup switching to girl crush since we are/we’re in a era where girl crush is immensely marketable. I also think fans and people forget, the company doesn’t care what the idol wants to do, if the concept isn’t something that can be deemed marketable at the time, they won’t release it, it’s a waste of time and money.
Amazing. The Concept Conversation finally happened on “rIVerse Reacts”. Now I can finally welcome you time K-Pop Fandom/ Culture. And shout out to the other comments and supporters that aren’t afraid to have this conversation as well. It’s not ALWAYS a bad thing, it can also be educational 😌✌️!!
(g)i-dle has soyeon writing almost all of the music, and she is truly charismatic...!! I think yuqi's pink hair looks great this time, and it also shows off her charm as the main dancer🥰 Originally, Sujin was the main dancer, but he left the group, so I am sorry if this comment makes you sad🥲 If you don't mind, could you please react to the recent new song "memeM" by PURPLE K!SS? These girls are wonderfully talented members, born as juniors of MAMAMOO! I think you can get a better sense of they charm after seeing their debut song "Ponzona" and their next song "Zombie", but if you don't mind, please check out their latest song "memeM" 😘.
@@windlife Actually, that part has always bothered me! I was very curious to know if there was a fluctuation or not, since there was no official announcement. Thank you for letting us know 😌.
Justice is so real for that, popstars do hop on to the next trend to stay relevant. Obviously artist evolve their sound and change their looks/aesthetic but there's at least progression and we at least know foundational-y (that's not a word is it) who they are and what they'll bring even if it's packaged differently. As a viewer i continue to watch cause of your commentary but kpop (as a novice-level listener) has gotten predictable.
its interesting you bring about "identity" in kpop on THIS song/mv because THATS what its is EXACTLY about. TOMBOY is about them breaking the norm as a "girl group". people often associate the word tomboy with a girl dressing like a boy basically. but this song not just lyrically but also VERY MUCH visually showcase that they can be girly girls in their dressing styles or looks but are STILL tomboys because its about the ATTITUDE. its NOT about any aesthetic or any other shit. (as you may know the "G" in their name stands for Girls and they have repeatedly and very "in your face"-ly either slashed out or straight up left out the G) This comeback was very important for them as a group because it was them rebranding themselves while also making a statement that they will never die (I Never Die is the album's name) after an extremely hard year for all the members and the fans. One of their members (Soojin) was kicked out of the group and the company after a STUPID scandal over MIDDLE SCHOOL bullying case that had NO basis or evidence. This song, the mv, the album, THE ENTIRE COMEBACK was EVERYTHING. im so proud of all SIX of them really. 🔥 great reaction btw missed munroe she would have absolutely LOVED this.
The one missing here is Soojin, Soojin left the group because of a bullying scandal wich was false, she won in the court but still never joined gidle again.

And she's a true boss, this girl does IT ALL
She reminds me of CL and Hyuna’s daughter to me. ✨
Soyeong is beyond level of them
Yeh but they dont know who they are even though they have seen past videos
Soyeon is above both CL and Hyuna. The weirdest comparison ever.
Their last shot? Didn't know the company said that. Poor girls.
Last shot?? Wth?? They are very famous rn
Monroe the whole time : I’m not here sorry guys
Monroe when it’s her moment: PLAYLISSSSTTTTT
Gidle has their own identity, they not rebel but they just wont stick to the same thing over and over. But identity wise you would know it is gidle style, image, brand, hook etc
The basis of the song and the meaning behind the comeback is them rebelling against fitting into a mold and being restricted as just “a girl group” since girl groups aren’t expected to write or produce and have their own ideas, etc. It’s not just a quick concept/gimmick, it’s a statement.
the missing member is soojin she left the group because of a high school bullying scandal she was accused of and the company didn't even say if it was true or not they just deleted her
It was in middle school and both the company and soojin herself denied it wasn't true but it happened when she was 12 (10 years ago) so she can't find solid evidence to support her ground that's why she leave the group so it won't affect the group reputation
Btw BOTH soojin and accuser sides can't find solid prove so the police drop the case that's why soojin choose to leave
Soojin was kicked out because the person she bullied is also a celebrity(actor) which helped prove the situation.
@@dbwldnjs8351 stop the wrong info soojin, never bully that actress she didn't even know the actress and never talked bad abt her
(G)I-DLE's Yuqi's solo music is actually heavily influenced by rock, so it's unsurprising IDLE would eventually do a rock concept.
Same with Soyeon solo too
That discussion is very interesting and i can see why this constant "concept change" for groups can be seen as an "issue".
And in my opinion Gidle is one of the groups who can make every concept their owns and do it in the Gidle way and you still see THEM and their brand although it’s a totally different concept yk 🥰
its funny because before i used to be a fan fan of twice because of their songs and their sound and EVERYONE in those times were like that, "again the same, again the same" and i was like beech shut up i love it, eventually they change it their sound and i slowly left twice and his music 😿
The same with gfriend but they always have their sound
@@kiwiluv1684 ohhhhhh🥺🥺🥺🥺 I am sad for you… I like both sounds of twice 😅🥰
G idle is so great and so talented, Soyeon does produce and write pretty much everything! When you get a chance please react to to PURPLE KISS! Mamamoo's lil sister group, from the same label, so expect vocals and they also write and produce their songs like two of their singles. maybe an episode on them. They are the monster rookies of the 4th gen. Debut: "Ponzoña" then "Zombie" and now "memeM" all of the songs are completely different but still with the same concept of the 7 witches.
Yesss tysm for recommending purple kiss. I really hope we could see riverse react to them. I’m sure they’ll be pleasantly surprised.
god i love them
I love that someone is putting purple kiss out there they are so underrated and deserve so much more recognition
Disagree actually.. BTS are the biggest example of that you can definitely have a say in a lot of things!
The signature message from (g)i-dle is "just doing what they like" and they always enjoy the new concept/setup for their comeback.
YESS CMON SKYE SWEETNAM
Actually yujin from IVE covered tangled up in me by skye sweetnam so I think youre right that style is getting popular in korean now
Also in terms of authenticity in kpop I definitely agree how the concepts can feel like a thing veneer that doesnt really cut through.
Seventeen is another one - but they still try a ton of different concepts each comeback.
@@ikeeneye true true thank you love
Ok soo there were actually 6 members and one of the members got kicked out called SOOJIN(my bias) 🥺✨from there freaking company because some kind of false highschool bully charges were applied on her... Still missing herrr... The comeback is not complete without her!!
false?
lmao definitely weren’t false, stop spreading misinformation
she was kicked out for a reason
@@osirisvante it's false, on account of lack of evidence proving it factual or otherwise, it's just their words against soojin
They literally kicked Hyuna and Edawn out and for what I-
But tbh they escaped Cube.
They create songs of all kinds, and they perform them _well._
More than almost any other group, (G)I-DLE is absolutely (G)I-DLE, whether there's graffiti, lions or church bells.
Thank you for the effort saying/typing that, very well said!👏👏👏
Very well said
This song topped all the charts in Korea for weeks…getting 167 Perfect All KiII (topping all music charts) 167 times
I like the concept..the fashion, the choreo, the song, the idea and effort of the whole team.
It gives the story and worth to watch the MV.

@@mangocheese2837 yeah. Especially with the newer groups
Wow thank you so much for your reaction!
The fact they PAK for many times!!!
also mamamoo's killing voice!!
I absolutely love Zak with facial hair. It just suits him so well. I’m living for this silver hair/dark beard and stache. A+!
exo’s identity is vocals lolz, i mean i get your point but you have to remember that kpop is a industry that promotes changing to what’s on trend and that means going concept to concept in comparison to perhaps western groups
Soyeon's charisma is truly incredible
Literally gidle has such a unique concept just by listening to their first beat
As a doll artist I need to know what Dizz's doll collection is like.

I love HyunA and I love Soyeon. She is the 4th gen queen. I love everything about that woman. She’s part of K/DA too if you haven’t seen them.
Was waiting for these ✨✨
Soyeon has always had her own unique vibe and talent I’ve been in love with her since before she debuted with G idle! I would recommend looking at her solo releases if you really like her :)
We missed monroe🥲💔
Sending truck loads of love to my favourite group🥰❤
from Oh My God to Tom Boy.
you just have to know what are in the lyrics.
thats why people buy into them and therefore breaking records eventhough they are not from a big company
The Member thats missing is Soojin she was the main dancer. She was kicked out of the group due to false B*llying accusations
They seem to enjoy Dreamcatcher. They really the only group that keeps the rock vibe
LMAOOO not Dizz saying he's doesn't wanna be there☠️☠️☠️ I mean at least he's honest we all could tell lmao. Love the honesty tho!
the song is such a bop!!!
That's not what kpop has been about.
we need the my bag reaction!!!
I luv yuqis pink hair its so pretty!
I thought u guys on hiatus😅 now isee alot reaction from u guys
Yall gotta react to My Bag!
I put that in quotes because you let us know the real tea on how you feel and I love that 😂
So really my question is, even though this generation of Kpop doesn’t spark your interests as much and you talked about how they constantly change their concepts, do you think if groups still continued to change concepts but it flowed better from the previous comeback, would that change your perspective? To make more sense, say if a group’s storyline is trying to find the light at the end of the tunnel. For every comeback, they would changed their concept because they wanted to show a different emotion of what it took to get there. But in the back of your mind, you know their main storyline. Would that keep your interest in the group?
I’m really curious. Sorry for this long comment. Hope this made sense because it made sense in my head 😂
PS. You are so right about when they do hip hop or R&B concepts, that’s they have to dress like it. Cornrows, Dreads, long gold chain…Elements of Black people 😐
guys react to the new mv of bigbang after 4 years it's so beautiful 🥺
U guys hit the nail on the head, there’s very few K-pop groups that I get the vibe of who they are as a group and hit there personas very well. For me personally I like G idle as a group , I watch a lot of there vlogs and I would say this song fits there personas very well, they are very sassy and some of them don’t like each other and it makes for great entertainment, they need their own show lol
(G)i-dle:Queens👑👑👑
I love this whole "take a concept to fit what we're vibing now" cuz is so true. A lot of groups focus alot on that and it almost feels like you can get no actual personality from them! It feels robotic and kinda takes away a lot of the beauty behind their work, especially when they're constantly changing to fit that new thing
Significant input, Zak! LOVE your thought process and intelligence
i love gidle 😭😭
It’s not ALWAYS a bad thing, it can also be educational 😌✌️!!
hope they can also watch the my bag dance practice of g-idle
“I would have picked it up and ate it too” took me out 😭 love your reactions ✨
(g)i-dle has soyeon writing almost all of the music, and she is truly charismatic...!!
I think yuqi's pink hair looks great this time, and it also shows off her charm as the main dancer🥰
Originally, Sujin was the main dancer, but he left the group, so I am sorry if this comment makes you sad🥲
If you don't mind, could you please react to the recent new song "memeM" by PURPLE K!SS?
These girls are wonderfully talented members, born as juniors of MAMAMOO!
I think you can get a better sense of they charm after seeing their debut song "Ponzona" and their next song "Zombie", but if you don't mind, please check out their latest song "memeM" 😘.
Yuqi is still a lead dancer tho. They blank Soojin's position and not put anyone to be the main dancer.
@@windlife
Actually, that part has always bothered me!
I was very curious to know if there was a fluctuation or not, since there was no official announcement.
Thank you for letting us know 😌.
IMM CRYINGGG😢😢 when they said who’s missing I wanted to cryyyy. #bringsoojinback
they should react to their second song which is my bag, they could also react to IVE comeback "Love Dive" 💘
9:21 is literally so funny like the way dizz looks at him and k is just like “mmm”
I got into pop punk and kpop at the same time in 2008 so this just made me happy to see 😂
DIZZ IS BACKKKKK
React to “my bag”. Ur gonna love it
The member who's missing is Soojin, she sadly left the group 😢 she was the main dancer
its interesting you bring about "identity" in kpop on THIS song/mv because THATS what its is EXACTLY about. (as you may know the "G" in their name stands for Girls and they have repeatedly and very "in your face"-ly either slashed out or straight up left out the G)
This comeback was very important for them as a group because it was them rebranding themselves while also making a statement that they will never die (I Never Die is the album's name) after an extremely hard year for all the members and the fans.
great reaction btw missed munroe she would have absolutely LOVED this.
영어가 부족해서 한국말로 쓸께요. 꽤 오랫동안 riverselive를 지켜봤는데 그 속에서 Dizz의 생각변화를 봤구요.
Dizz
So we need to give Dreamcatcher their flowers cuz they keep it a buck from dusk till dawn. They have their own identity and have never strayed 💯
That why I stand them
The one missing here is Soojin, Soojin left the group because of a bullying scandal wich was false, she won in the court but still never joined gidle again.
new reaction ive - lovedive. i bet u guys love it!!
I hope you will react on their song of 2021 HWAA which was a comeback song.
That is my favourite song of all time
(G)I-DLE "them" is Minnie or Soyeon Starting the Songs / Self Composed Music / rarely does Highnotes / Catchy music & etc.
Its pretty easy when you know them u start to realise these small things they have!
