    Like in the mythology that informs twin peaks and its structure, symbols have multiple meanings. The ring itself can represent the moon linked to Bob, whose nature appears to encompass various pan-like elements as well as those of a werewolf, it can also represent a "portal" and the ring of sycamore trees that serve as one, it can link us to the gold orb used to create Laura in the first place a and, importantly, it links us to eternity and the depiction of time not just in Twin Peaks but in Lynch's work as a whole. In terms of the symbol, I always assumed this to be a mere pictogram of an owl, and given its link to the owl cave this is probably in part the case, now it's very clearly to me also a crude representation of "the devilish one", i.e. Judy. Particularly in seeing more focus on this malevolent spirit or one may even say a "god" in a sense in the books we see her as this mother of darkness figure that may even be a source of worship and obedience within the black lodge and its spirits. Given his apparently malevolent nature I would say this is true of the Arm, hence why Mike cut him off to purify himself when he saw the "face of god" (the fireman? or Laura Palmer even?), and his reference to wedding Bob perhaps links to what I have read about this Babylonian demon utug that wandered the Earth and who, if unified in marriage on Earth in female and male forms, would great a far more dangerous being. It appears Bob is closer to Judy that anyone, and we may even see a "marriage" from the start between them if it is the case that Judy inhabited Sarah all along, and that both spirits fed on the fear, pain and sorrow of that family and of their hosts. Before I even noticed the link between the owl cave symbol and Judy's image, I decided that in Fire Walk With Me Laura is actually killed in an act of ritual sacrifice in the end, and that this is ultimately the purpose the ring serves, with Mike's reasons for sabotaging Bob's plan still being somewhat ambiguous, and though more benevolent than the Arm, we still wonder if he is more concerned with saving others or with harvesting what Bob "owes him". Like any chthonic deity and deities in general though, he is naturally "grey" and ambiguous. We may look at Hades as a example of a god that was both worshipped and deeply feared. As the black lodge is the "mirror" realm or dark otherworld, it would be wrong to consider any beings that inhabit it as opposed to the white lodge to be entirely benevolent. Father Time (Chronos) and Hades are merciless figures. Evidently, so is Mike when he guarantees Laura's death that a more caring Dale tries to avoid by telling her to not take the ring.
    I would say likewise the ring also has multiple functions, as it appears to alternately condemn people to ritual sacrifice, provide them with passage to the black lodge and signify servitude to Judy and a "membership" of the black lodge, depending on the context.

    One thing that strikes me about the shot of The Arm trying to give Laura the ring in her dream is that the ring is placed directly over his right eye in the shot. I’m not sure if David had a specific intention with that or he simply did it for aesthetic purposes but it really adds to the shot nonetheless.

    Brilliant video! I always just took Mike at his word that he had changed sides and wanted to stop Bob from killing people for selfless reasons.
    The Arm and Mike seemed to use the pain and sorrow caused by Laura's death to weaken Leland's self control so that his increasingly erratic behavior would expose him as the killer.
    Perhaps Laura's death was the only way to set Bob up for his ultimate defeat? What did happen to Bob in the alternate timeline Cooper created, anyway?

    Cooper doesn’t want her to take the ring because he wants her to live, perhaps he believes that if she were possessed then that could be fixed. His goal is to save her, and his willingness to let evil in to do that is also what happens in episode 17 of season 3; they were suppose to destroy Judy, but Cooper and Diane wanted to take it a step further and save Laura, but in doing so they face the consequences, which is whatever the hell that reality they’re in is.
    He apparently knows everything about Judy before he got trapped in the waiting room, according to Cole, and it seems reasonable that he knows how the ring works to some extend (in the return, which implies all he’s done sit frozen for all those years) he seems to know exactly what he’s doing until the very end. So him misunderstanding the ring doesn’t make sense.

    • @TakeTheRing
      @TakeTheRing  6 лет назад +3

    Great video although my personal interpretation is a bit different. Bob has a deal with the Arm to torment Laura. Through her suffering the Arm gets garmombozia. Then Bob gets obsessed with Laura and wants to inhabit her, at which point she would no longer feel pain or sorrow, and hence be source of garmombozia. Arm wants to give her the ring so Bob can't possess her as he would get transferred to the Black Lodge. Seing ring on her finger he loses it and murders her. Cooper does not want Laura to get the ring as this is Cooper that is already on the plan to kill Judy, and they need Laura to do it (we know that time is not exactly linear in the Black Lodge/waiting room).

    The secret diaries made me think that it was Laura's strength that stopped BOB from being able to posses her, so resorting to killing her. That always stuck as beautiful and empowering in a way. Then in FWWM it felt like it was all the ring, which really took away what I'd thought the diary was trying to say. Am I wrong?

    • @TakeTheRing
      @TakeTheRing  5 лет назад +1

      no, I don't think so. it is her strength for sure. the ring is more or less a symbol. meaning, it has a function (taking spirits to the red room) and it's part of the lodge beings deal with Bob. and we don't really know if Laura really knows what it means, but she puts it on maybe out of instinct? but she resists Bob until the end, she's a fighter, and the Diary book really, really fleshes all of that out. watch my Laura video!

    I read in one analysis that the ring is not jade, but rather formica. I believe there is a scene where you see the arm set the ring on the green formica table which he had very specifically mentioned earlier. And when you look at the table just near where he lays the ring, you can see that an oval section of the table which is the exact size and shape of the green insert in the ring.
    Now, I have no idea what the green formica table is supposed to be or supposed to symbolize, but from what I understand about Lynch, he wouldn't have the arm mention the table, it's material and it's color for no reason, as Lynch rarely does anything for no reason, and especially not from one of the most important characters in the show who has so few lines anyway. Nor would he deliberately have him lay the ring on the table, especially right next to a missing piece of the table that perfectly matches the green substance of the ring.
    Again, I don't know what it means, but I'm sure it means something.

    • @TakeTheRing
      @TakeTheRing  3 года назад

      yes, this a popular theory and I plan on addressing this idea - the ring is going to pop up a couple more times as I do more videos. I like this theory a lot, but it's very speculative, in that you don't actually see the ring on the formica table. on the actual formica table, you see the small hole and the Arm says 'with this ring..'
      in the Red Room, the table is a stone table and the ring is some sort of stone (jade in the novels). but yeah, in that Convenience Store scene, with Bob and the Arm, it makes sense that maybe the ring was formed from a piece of the table - especially since it seems to live on and keeps coming back to the table in the Red Room.
      like I said, this is a theory that's been around for years. I definitely plan on mentioning it when I get to the Convenience Store part of my videos. thanks for watching my stuff and leaving a comment!

    So there were 3 artifacts with the Nez Perce, perhaps they were all rings with green inlays.

      I'm fascinated by what those objects are as well. Could there be more than one ring? Is that how Lana took Milford's ring to New York around the same time the nurse took it off Annie's finger? Maybe that's why it pops up so frequently in history, because there's more than one? Great idea, thanks for the comment!

    I don't understand a lot of twin peaks but your vids are helping me A LOT. One question, is the Arm good or bad? I would love a good explanation of what exactly the Arm is. Or isn't? Thanks for your wisdom!!

    • @TakeTheRing
      @TakeTheRing  4 года назад +1

      I think The Arm and Mike are probably neither good nor bad. They're selfish and have their own motivations. Mike and The Arm want their creamed corn and don't really care about Laura in FWWM, but they also help Cooper in The Return because the Doppelganger being out has upset the balance of everything. I'll be exploring the Arm more at some point! Thanks for watching!

    the numbness in the arm should be obvious, its Mike without his arm taking a passive posesion, when Teresa Banks is killed by Leland/Bob, Mike comes as Philips Gerard scream "you stole the korn" AKA teresa banks pain and sorrow

      hey! yes, all my videos have spoilers for everything Twin Peaks as I try to include the whole universe in the discourse. maybe Episode 4 "The Town of Twin Peaks" doesn't have Season 3 spoilers, but I would wait to watch Season 3 before watching any of my videos.

      @@TakeTheRing - It’s always fun to speculate; that’s what Twin Peaks is for! 😀 Seriously, your videos are great; I’d love one on this topic.
      Speaking of speculation, this video has made me reconsider the murder of Teresa Banks. Originally, I thought Leland/BOB killed her just to protect Leland from her blackmail efforts, but now I think the ring might have something to do with it. Might BOB have wanted the ring to return to the waiting room to put it “out of play” while he worked on possessing Laura?

      death is controversial, so Frost is playing with the murder/ring idea. pretty sure he was a mason though and that apron is his too. more on the death: www.smithsonianmag.com/history/meriwether-lewis-mysterious-death-144006713/
